How much cups or ounces does 1/4 of uncooked brown rice equal to after it is cooked? I don't want to just cook 1/4 cup to find out so i'm hoping that someone here knows. It says that 1/4 cup (39 grams) uncooked rice is 140 calories. I am not sure if it a long or medium grain rice.....thanks.

Hi,
With rice it's 3:1, 1c uncooked rice + 2c water = 3c cooked rice.

I have to comment on brown rice!
I grew up on white rice smothered in butter. And that's all I ever liked.
A number of times over the years as I began to eat more healthy, I'd try brown rice and with the butter it tasted like popcorn.
Well, I love popcorn but I didn't like the rice.
Then I got a Filipino roommate and learn about soy sauce on rice. Of course he always ate white rice, but I learned to enjoy rice with a LITTLE soy sauce instead of butter.
After my roommate moved out, I went back to brown rice and it's just fine with soy sauce! So now it's the only rice I buy.
If you've ever seen Survivor, the reality TV show we have in the US, they always give these half-starving people WHITE rice. I need to write them a letter. It sends such a bad message about nutrition!

Wouldn't that vary somewhat according to the type of rice in question? I doubt that Basmati rice is as absorbent as wholegrain brown variety.
On the other hand, if I'm wrong, shoot me down. Generally, I only eat the stuff, rather than cook it.

Yeah I seen those before posting the question but I guess here in Hawaii maybe we use a different kind of rice.... I use 2 cups of water to 1 cup rice...... 3 cups would be way too watery....The bag says whole wheat brown rice.

I don't see where anyone suggested using 3 cups of water.

Oh my bad I thought the second post meant 3 cups of water to 1 cup of rice since he put 3:1 but didn't read the second part of it very good.
