My husband should lose about 35-40 lbs. His doctor wants him to use the smart for life diet program. It works along the lines of 2 of their "cookies" a day with a high protein low fat 500 calorie evening meal for a total of approx. 800 calories.
At this point, he had dropped from a high of 194 to a low of 181 in 3 months, bringing his blood sugar to a safe level (as opposed to borderline) and was taken off cholesterol medicine.
Since then he relaxed his diet and now his cholesterol has really shot up, and his bp has risen moderately and he has gained about 7 lbs.
Frankly I think the doctor is insane for recommending such a stringent diet, but I was wondering if anyone here has been on the diet for any length of time, and what happened when (if) you went off of it. To her credit, she is on this diet as well, but she was extremely overweight when I last saw her.

I find it funny that a meal replacement program which is also a VLCD (very low calorie diet) is called 'smart for life' where clearly no-one can be expected to carry on with it for life!
The idea that when your husband 'relaxed' the diet and his numbers got worse suggests he hasn't learnt any nutrtion lessons from the experience.
I would recommend an education in nutrtion - for example have him read the book 'Eat To Live' (a diet that will definitely improve numbers and in my opinion (and experience) can be followed for life..

Yes, I want him to go to a nutritionist before he starts any diet. He had done so well and had been receiving so many complements he thought he could get away with relaxing his diet. oops
