Hi guys, I'm new here and am really happy to find you. I've been reading this book by the American Institute for Cancer Research and am getting into their food plan. They talk a lot about making meat the side dish and fruit and veggies the main course. They also stress eating many different colors of fruit and veggies and I have become obsessed not with calories but with colors LOL.  The new plate in the book title refers to shifting the proportion of food on your plate so that veggies, fruit, whole grains and beans take up most of the room and the portion of meat is reduced in size. I have been doing this for about 10 days and don't want to start the "weighing myself every day" thing, but I feel that there is a difference. At the very least this seems to be a healthy plan, and I have decided that health comes first and weight loss should follow.  The book is called The New American Plate Cookbook.

Way to go lynnie171!

You might also enjoy The Survivor's Handbook, written primarily for survivors of cancer but truly applicable to anyone who wants to eat a very healthy diet. You can download it free at cancerproject.org. Click on Handbook and Video and you'll see it top of the list.

To good health!

Wm......Thank you so much for that site!! It has encouraged me even more to eat for good health.  I have never considered vegetarian before, but they have some fabulous vegetarian recipes on that site that has made me think that I may do it for at least a couple of days a week and see what happens. Thank you again.

Do that, and you certainly won't have to worry about portions of food groups!

BTW, I used to wonder how any vegetarian could be anything but slim and healthy. Then I learned from wm, as well as started to enter a lot of vegetarian food brands into my food calculator.

You can be a vegetarian and eat horribly! There are tons of vegetarian products full of bad stuff and heavily processed. So just keep that in mind when talking to other vegetarians. They're all not good examples.

Going to go eat a raw carrot now,

Peter...I agree that some of the vegetarian stuff is suspect. The reason I am going to try it 2 days a week is because rice and beans (which sound really good) may be healthy but really caloric. I guess no matter what plan you are on you have to be nutritionally sensible.

BTW...I love your little kissy kissy monkey.

My monkey stands for "hang in there."

Actually I have 12 and my grandkids can name them all! We take them shopping and everywhere. People often wonder why I have a hand extended out to the side crossing streets and parking lots.

Hi, Lynnie - Peter pointed me to your message. I just stumbled across the AICR website where they talk about the New American Plate, and liked what I saw. I've ordered some of their brochures and put in a request at my library for the cookbook.

Wondered how you were making out with it so far. Any particular recipes in the cookbook that turned out especially well?

Hi 52....I am loving this food plan. So far I am just working with the concept of the plan, which is changing the portions on your plate. But most importantly for me is that my entire way of thinking is changing. Instead of  thinking calories...I now think health. When I eat all the various colored fruits and veggies my brain thinks "okay, that meal was soooo good for me".  Its been 2 weeks now and I actually do have more energy. The recipes look great, but so far I haven't tried them. I am first getting into the smaller portion of protein and lots of fruit and veggies and grains.   I haven't been weighing myself, because I don't want to fall into doing that yet. I feel as though there is a definite difference though. Please let me know what you think of the plan. I just know you will love it.

52...I want to thank you for mentioning the AICR site. I had never been to it, but many of the recipes at that site are in the book. It is worth getting the book from the library (as I did) because aside from the recipes it explains the concept. That is a great website. I love that it has an email address to nutritionists who can answer any questions that you have.
