I have been on this diet for a month. I am 53 years old, I started at 1800 calories and I weighed 174. I joined the gym and I go 3 days a week. I go there for 1 hour during that time. Now I weigh 166, I aim for 1400 calories, no more then 30 grams of fat and 25+ fiber. Sometimes  calories go over closer to 1500 but that is on one day of the weekend. On the weekend I go on my elliptical at home for 30 minutes. My problem is at the gym when I am doing my caridio I start to feel like all the energy has drained out of me after 15 minutes and it is hard to continue on the machine. I do force myself to stay on it. I eat oatmeal and 1 cup of fat free milk before I leave to go to the gym. Is there something I can take to substitue the oatmeal? I have had a complete physical by my doctor including a stress test and I have a clean bill of health.

Why do you want to replace the oatmeal (my standard breakfast)? I'm not sure I get your point.

About feeling tired after 15 minutes, my suggestion is that you stop at 13!

After a while 13 will be easy and you can go to 14. Eventually 20 will be enjoyable!

Please please please... baby steps!

Oatmeal does not hold me at all. Some days I am hungry after a bowl of it.  I should stop at 13 minutes and try another machine that is less on me but I guess I figure I have to torture myself. I have got better on the elliptical but I have some days I can go lot longer and not feel exhausted but some days I get wiped out sooner and then I get the shakes and weak in the knees. I have talked with my doctor and she has done lots of tests and everything comes out good.

Please know that I'm just giving my personal opinion here... and I'm very opinionated! LOL

But I think the most important thing a person can do exercise-wise is ensure that they enjoy it. When you exercise for even a short amount of time it helps get you in better shape. And then you will quite naturally find yourself doing more and more and getting in better and better shape. In fact, it can become addictive.

Please read my comments on it in the Tutorial on Exercise.

And take it easy!

I want people to give their thoughts otherwise I would not be on the website. As far as opinionated I have a tee shirt that says " I am not opinionated I am just Finnish"  And that is me to a T.    :chewing::chewing::chewing:

Try mixing a handful of almonds or a scoop of protein powder in with your oatmeal...the protein will help keep you feeling fuller for longer!

I agree, Try getting more protein in the morning. If you have a clean bill of health, then their is no reason why you have to eat oatmeal (even though it is good for you). Maybe try eating a different breakfast for a few days and see if it makes a difference.

When you say you get the shakes, I think that is because you are not use to the exercise. Cut back until you get use to it. And no, you don't have to torture yourself.

If your having trouble counting calories or just sick of it. Use smart for life its the easiest diet ever eat cookies lose weight. You eat six a day that replace your meals, cook a healthy dinner 10-12 ounces lean protien and veggies and watch the weight fall off. Its that simple.
