Hi there,
I'm new to this forum, and just wondering has anyone here tried any type of fasting or cleansing or "detox" type programs?
And if so, what is the general consensus.. Do they work? Are they sustainable.
A friend of a friend at work did an online program which involved a strict diet for the first stage and then a stage of fasting followed by a stage of strict diet, and had pretty good results...
The program he did is called the "webcleanse" and you can read about it here:
detox-cleanse.com/fasting-detox-cleanse-webcleanse.htm
I've heard of others such as "8 day cleanse" and "Dr Natura" .... I'm a bit confused on what to do and whether I can stick it out!!
Would love your feedback and experience peoples!
Justin

Here is what newsweek writes about it:
Detox Diets
"For some reason, people think our bodies are full of all kinds of toxins," says dietitian Tara Gidus. Some detox diets, including "21 Pounds in 21 Days," call for "cleansing" with colonics. Translation: enemas. The problem with using them to clear the colon of waste: "it's not really waste at all," says Northwestern University gastroenterologist Alan Buchman. "What people describe as 'toxins' include the normal metabolic products of digestion and the normal bacteria that produce vitamin K and folic acid—and other substances that keep the colon healthy.

I can give you a bit more information about some of the products used for "cleansing" and "detox." Most of them are very powerful laxatives, with some really nasty glycosides. When taken together, and they usually contain multiple herbs, they can do some serious damage to your digestive system, up to and including rupture of the intestines.
Even such "natural" laxatives like senna and aloe vera can cause cramping and pain when taken. When you take them together or add the stronger herbs, you're asking for several days of misery and the need to be in close proximity to a bath room.
Depending on the product, some of the plants are considered to be strong enough to require qualified herbalists to give you instructions.

Justin,
I am doing a diet that involves alternate days of fasting (or to be precise, very low calories) and eating normally (Johnson Upday Downday Diet). The goal is not detox; it is weight loss and also activating the SIRT-1 gene, which confers many health benefits.
I have been doing it for 7 weeks or so, and have lost about 5 or 6 lbs (it's hard to tell precisely, because I weigh more after the up days and less after the down days, but I am definitely losing!). Many people I talk to online have been on this for months. It sounds harder than it is. I have learned that a lot of what makes me eat is social cues, rather than true hunger. Even if I'm hungry, I know I can eat the next day!
I know that this is not rapid weight loss, but that doesn't bother me. I plan to keep doing this forever, because it works and is not unpleasant at all. It's also VERY easy (in terms of meal planning).
