hi........ curious about atkins

i know you have to decreaes ur carb intake to 20g, for the first two weeks

then the next two weeks, make it 25, and later, a bit more

anywho.. im vegetarian, and east indian. most of my main meals are from flour chapatis, and veggies cooked in sauce.

please let me know if anyone has ever had any indian food while being on atkins. and how they did so?

if my regular, carb intake is about, say 100 g... what if i follow atkins rules, but instead of doin it at 20, 25, 30 i do it at 50,60,80 . is that still possible since im still lowering my carbs?

also... most my carbs in my meal, come from milk, fruit, and the chapati. aside from the chapati which is white flour- can the fruit and milk really be bad carbs?

do they count?

i am already giving up on atkins before starting it lol seems like.

i have so far, been filiing up on protein shakes and veggies as my lunch/breakfast. maintaining a thing of, 40% carbs , 40% protein and about 20% fat. i hope thats okay still

ookay i always get off topic.

what to eat on atkins?? besidessssss meat and eggs?

back in 2003 I was very naive - I watched a TV program about Atkins and just assumed that I had all the information about it. Clearly I didn't (until I visited atkins.com and later on got the book out of the library).

The induction phase (2 weeks for some people, longer for others - depending on how much they have to lose) is quite strict: only 20g of carbs per day, and most of those carbs must come from vegetables (a few are taken by the animal products - meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese etc.).

The stated aim of the induction phase is to induce ketosis - so taking in 50 - 80g of carbs wouldn't work for that.

if you eat 1500 calories (as an example) and 40% of your calories are from carbs, that's 150g of carbs.

In the later phases (i.e. after induction), carbs are re-introduced using a carbohydrate pyramid which places fruit ahead of milk, and then quite a bit later whole-grain (and refined grain is a long way after that!). [Note: my friend is also of east indian origin, his mum cooks Chapati from medium wholemeal chapati flour, so his chapatis are whole-grain]

[I've prevously worked out that one Chapati is about 150 calories and 38g of carbohydrate. Looks like that chapati is making the decision for you not to be on Atkins. Just as it should be - one of the most useful messages that Atkins propogated was how unhealthy refined carbohydrates are]

As for doing Atkins induction as a vegeterian: in addition to Atkins-friendly vegetables (spinach, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, celery etc.) you'll be eating eggs, hard cheeses, whey protein, avocado, olives, nuts, seeds.

What sparked your interest in Atkins? Has someone talked about "low-carb" and you assumed that Atkins is the only low-carb option available, perhaps?

If you're looking for different approaches you could always check out the moderate-carbohydrate and carbyohydrate-cycling options talked about in BFFM.

hmm, a lot to digest lol. thanks for replying..

well i have used the bffm, not usd, i have the book-but to be honest it didnt give me any plans more like tips. im very meticulous i need an exact meal plan to follow.

its harder, because now i moved back home, and my mom refuses to make me anything that isnt indian. yes my mom also makes whole wheat chapatis or rotis as we call them.

i heard atkins is not the healthiest option as restricting ur carbs is really not a good idea. my dad, has about 80 pounds to lose, buti dont think atkins would be a good ide for him, because he does not count anyting. for him, all he seems to be doing is, taking 2 hour walks daily, eating low sugar fruits, and eating indian food. unfortuantely his wieght wont fall-but he is also a little too careless, so what can we do right?!

what other low carb plans are there? what if instead of doing atkinms exactly, i just restrict my carbs to being either from 2 chapatis daily, and fruits and veggies, milk. so instead of the regular juk i used toeat such as bread, pasta, pizza... it will be of healthy foods, the roti is an exception

Any excuse that has you cutting out junk food is a step in the right direction - and a lot of junk food is made with refined flour and/or sugar.

BFFM can be a very prescriptive plan, if you let it be. It tells you how many meals to eat. It tells you how many calories to eat. It tells you what macronutrient ratios to go for. There is even a sample menu in the appendix. It tells you how to monitor your progress and what to do depending on the results you're getting!

I did Atkins with my hubby about 8 years ago.....Never again....I was constipated all the time, tired, had heartburn, and his cholesterol when through the roof.  Sure we lost weight, but it was not worth it.  You know when you are fantasizing about a piece of bread that something is wrong.

Thanks for the reminder that Atkins has a downside. The Atkins site speaks so glowingly of good health and fast weight loss, you tend to forget that it just isn't a very healthy way to lose and is very hard to maintain.

All the people I know who lost weight on the plan, regained it so fast, they seemed to be balooning right before our eyes. That's such a shame after so much hard work.
