The foods are so low calorie that I wouldn't say there are calorie restrictions. You can basically eat all you'll want.

Does that include oats and wheat bread? If its unprocessed and whole grain, does that mean there is no restriction?Or do you have to eat only until you are full and satisfied?

Why would anyone want to eat beyond the point of being full and satisfied? The book is widely available; check it out and all your questions will be answered.

Greed and glutany, of course! Probably the reason half of us (myself included) are struggling with weight loss or weight control.

I just finished this book.  It was very informative and enlightening.  Granted, I do not think that I am totally read to dive head first into his 6 week diet plan (although the weight loss aspect of it sounds great), I am certainly going to apply some of his theories and recipes to mine.

It was a very good read!  I highly recommend it!!!

I bought the book several weeks ago and haven't gotten all the way through it, though I did skim it and am now reading it in depth.  I also, will probably not do Dr. Furhman's 6 weeks program (I live in a household of MEAT & potatoes guys) but I have already started  with some of his suggestions and have had good luck in losing weight.

It's basically a vegan diet--little or no meat & he recommends you cut out dairy--no refined/processed foods.  I have done that and added lots of vegetable (both raw and cooked) and WOW.  I really have noticed a difference, in both how I feel healthwise and the weight is coming off.  He stresses the difference between nutritious healthy food and empty calories/non-nutritious foods.  The calorie difference between animal protien foods and vegetable protien foods is absolutely amazing!  Because of this, your calories are not really restricted but I honestly don't think you could eat enough of his food recommendations and gain weight so the theory is sound.

There is so much information on the correlation between diet and disease that this is a book everyone should read--if not for weight loss then for the health benefits.  I can't state highly enough what a good book it is.  I look at my food intake in a whole new light now!

Look for it in your local library if you don't want to purchase it first.

Hello,     I am new to this site also.   So glad I found your post.   It pretty well answers all of my questions.  I am going to try to read it at the library.   Does it allow for using frozen foods.   It is really hard to get quality fresh veggies in my neighborhood.    And I question eating veggies shipped from another hemisphere.  Wouldn't they loose nutrition during shipping?

Frozen veggies can be BETTER than fresh!

What?

Really fresh food is of course the best. But how fresh is the produce you are buying? It may not always be that fresh.

Frozen fruits and veggies are (generally) frozen when they are at there best.

Frozen works.  It's lots better than canned.  I live in a neighborhood where it's hard to get fresh veggies/fruits, too.

Thanks Peter for having all the great info on your site.  Don't remember how I found it but it is a lifesaver!

Peter, thanks for making the changes to the diet plan section of the forums.   I started on the Eat to Live plan in October of 2005, and roam around the forum looking for references to it.    It will be nice to have one spot to go to and I hope others who follow the plan will post here and it will become more active.   I first started reading the forums in July 2005, while I was following WL4I.   Then I read about someone's recommendation to read "The China Study" and "Eat to Live".   I have since recommended them to many people.   Truthfully most of them look at me like "Are you kidding?", except for those who have a loved one battling cancer or diabetes.    High cholesterol was my motivation.    At my previous blood work at the Dr. my cholesterol was at 230, with my "bad" cholesterol at 166.   My last tests showed a total cholesterol of 164, with my "bad" cholesterol at 95 :D    That is what keeps me on "Eat to Live".   I haven't followed it perfectly, but that's the beauty of it.   If I slip on one meal, I just start over at the next one.   It's not like when I was on Atkins, and worried about if I ate too many carbs, it would take me out of fat burning.    I also went to a site recommended by someone here, and printed out the "Cancer Survivor's Handbook", although I've never had cancer.   And I checked out a book by Dr. Neal Barnard (who co-wrote the Cancer Survivor's Handbook) at our local library.   So, I had just found 4 sources that explained the health benefits of a whole foods, plant based way of eating and I had to try it.   I have to admit, I don't miss the meat like I thought I would.   I do have it occasionally (except now during lent, I gave it up completely in an attempt to jump start my fluctuating weight loss), but I have more trouble limiting my whole grains.   I think I'm addicted to them.   Is that possible?   Anyway, thanks for making this topic more visible!   I appreciate it, all you have done for me with this site and the other members who have encouraged me just by posting their thoughts and diaries to read.   Hisgal-Pat:heart:

I came to this site looking for a calorie counter to help me lose weight and found that I would be starving myself to death if I had to eat so-called balance meals with the intent to lose weight.   I had been walking daily for about 1.5 hours or more but steadily gaining weight.   I was determined not to have to buy any new clothes in a larger size but it was a losing battle.  I am 6' tall and weighed 192 lbs. in February but as I said I was steadily gaining weight.  I started the Eat to Live lifestyle change February 9, 2006 after reading about it somewhere on this site.  Now I weigh 168 lbs. and I am still losing.  I still walk about an hour a day and I eat meat, but not daily.  I don't eat soy or tofu.  I never have liked milk so reading that I really don't need it is fine with me because I think it's nasty and haven't had any in maybe 20 years.  I love cheese but I noticed years ago it slowed my metabolism so I have it in small amounts occasionally on my salad and that suits me.  I eat beans just about every day because that is what fills me up when I have my veggies.  I love the diet and will follow it the rest of my life because I want to live a long and healthy life...that's what matters to me!

My kids eat meat daily but because I have changed the foods that come into the house from processed to fruit & veggies they have lost weight too and they don't exercise at all.  Now only do they not exercise I still allow them to snack on chips or sweets but now daily...maybe twice a week.  I am 42, have given birth 5 times, had a hysterectomy (which started my weight gain) and was taking natural hormones daily.  Now I am steadily losing weight and have cut my hormone intake by about 80% and it has to be the diet.  I am grateful to this site and to Dr. Furhman for helping me finally get close to my optimal weight.  When and if I get there I'll let you all know but this has been the closest I've gotten on any diet since my hysterectomy in 2000! :D

Congratulations on the weight loss!!  I follow Dr. Fuhrman's diet similar to how you do.  I do eat meat but not much anymore.  No soy and no tofu.  I love beans! so am glad to be able to keep up with them in my diet.  I was a big cheese fan but have pretty much done away with dairy--ocassionally some cheese on my salad, or on something else--

I find that when I go back to eating the "old way" that I really don't feel well.  And my migraines that plagued me since late teens and have substantially diminished since being on the diet (it's not really a diet as much as a lifestyle change for me) come back with a vengance!  I am more interested in the other health benefits--cancer fighting & cholesterol lowering--as both those are prevelant in my family history.

I am almost 5-ft 5-in. and weighed 158lbs when I found this site.  Now I am down to 142 with little trouble in staying there.  My goal is  another 10 pounds but I am very happy where I am and seem to have "plateau-ed"

Mushergirl and Mrsarroz,    Have either of you found any good "recipes" you enjoy with this way of eating?   I posted a veggie crockpot chili and a hominy bean salad in the recipes section.   I make a huge pot of veggie soup (more veggies than broth).   But it seems most of my meals are pretty plain and I tend to eat the same things over and over.   I don't want to get bored with the meals, so would welcome any ideas you have to share.    You can check out my diary to see what my meals look like.    Thanks!   Hisgal:heart:

Hi Mushgirl,

I am almost the same size as when you started.  5'5" and I weigh 150.  I am wondering how long it took you to lose the 16 lbs?  Do you work out regularly? etc.

I just started the plan a couple of days ago and it seems pretty doable for me.  The hardest part is giving up the coffee.

I too suffer from migraines and am seeking relief in that area.  I take imitrex right now, but know it can be bad for your heart.

About 5 years ago I did a cleansing diet, (no wheat, dairy, beef, alcohal, sugar, caffiene) and lost about 20 lbs (the same ones I want off now) and my headaches stopped.  So I am excited about this plan.

I have all sorts of events coming up this spring and summer that I want to be thin for.  I am working out 1-2 hours a day trying to get my calorie burn up as much as possible.  So I am curious, what would be a realistic weight loss in a month to 6 weeks.

Hi Hisgal,

I really am not a Martha Stewart kinda gal...sorry.  So for me I just go the my local Wal-Mart and buy frozen bags of mixed veggies (I just make sure that's all that's in the bag) and frozen bags of beans and bags of romaine lettuce, cans of unsalted diced tomatoes and bags of onions and different kinds of fruits including cucumbers.  I love the simplicity of the diet in that I don't have to "plan" I just cook my beans according to what the bag suggests and they last about 3 or 4 days, I put the frozen veggies in the oven for about 15 minutes (I like 'em crunchy), and then I cut up cucumber into my salad and add tomatoes and onions and also add onion to the beans (in the last 10 minutes of cooking) and I combine all of that and eat it 2x day on a really big plate.

Sometimes I have a chicken caesar salad that Wal-Mart makes but I don't eat the croutons (never have).  But as I said I'm not big on recipes and stuff but I prefer ready made stuff so thank the heavens for frozen food!  That's enough variety for me right now.

Lets see, I started around the 20th of January, weighed about 155-158 depending on the day.  By the 19th of February I was down to 144.  Today I am at 141 and it is still coming off slowly.  BUT I have not been consistent with the Eat To Live plan cause I live in a house full of Meat-n-Potatoes guys.  I don't eat much meat anymore, about 1 serving per week and like I've posted earlier, I have really cut back on the cheese & other dairy stuff. I don't eat sweets and if I get hungry for cookies or something I grab a piece of fruit or open a can of unsweetened mandarin oranges.  I know if I was more faithful to the plan, I'd get rid of that other 10 pounds.  As for excersing, I don't do too much.  I have livestock that I feed and when it was colder and snowier I was skiing X-country twice a week (about 3 miles) and using the eliptical trainer three days a week.  That helped me tremendously.  Once it dries up outside I'll be walking/running 3 times a week for about an hour each time.

My son is getting married in late May and I just HAD to lose that weight.  I am happy where I am right now but ideally would like to get down to 135ish.  I feel so much better about myself now and the best part is that I FEEL BETTER PHYSICALLY!!  I looked at pictures taken at Christmas and now and there is such a difference.

I would encourage you to give it a try.  I am not sorry I did and will continue to eat this way forever!

Hi Hisgal,

I have a couple recipes I worked out but mostly I am doing salads (huge salads!!) and I do steamed vegetables quite a bit.  I really like the acorn squash prepared like Dr. Fuhrman does in his book, my version used mandarin oranges (we had so many cans of them on hand--I don't know WHERE they came from!!!???).  One recipe I made up was for stuffed green peppers without meat.

I just kind of "threw" it together but I thought about it today and this is pretty close to what I did:

Stuffed Green Peppers

Lentlis (2 c.)

Brown Rice (1 ½ c.)

Canned tomatoes

Tomato paste

Mushrooms (1 ½ to 2 c. chopped

Onions ( ½ c. diced)

Garlic (1 clove diced)

Celery (1 c. diced)

Italian seasoning & Spices to taste

2 to 4 Green bell peppers

Slice tops off peppers and clean seeds out of inside.  Parboil in large pot of water.  Remove from water & drain well.

Cook lentils, brown rice and diced celery in 8 cups water until lentils are soft (about ½ hour).  Drain most of water then add garlic, onions and rest of ingredients except mushrooms.  Simmer for 20 minutes then add chopped mushrooms.  Cook 10 to 15 minutes longer.  Place peppers in baking pan and spoon lentil tomato mixture into peppers. Bake for 15 minutes in 350°F oven.

It was pretty good and I was so proud, I made it for my husband (he is definately NOT on the Eat To Live plan!) and he really liked it.  Of course if I had kept my mouth shut and not told him it didn't have hamburger in it, he'd never have known!  It's the mushrooms that do that, they give it a meat-like texture.  I plan on making it again this weekend.

Another thing I did that was good was Portabello mushrooms & black beans.  I just used a can of black beans (Fred Meyer brand) and sliced the mushrooms and sauted them in the liquid from the beans.  Added a little Mrs. Dash & some garlic and it was yummy!

I really liked your vegetable chili and will try it soon

Thanks for the reply.  If I could lose 15 lbs in a month I would be estatic.  I will keep you posted on my progress.

I too have a wedding to attend in May (12th).  My daughter is being confirmed April 30th and we are having a big party.  So that is my short term goal.  But you know, how there is always a party or something around the corner.  So it will be nice to be thin and stay there.

I will do my best to be true blue to the program.  It will be interesting to see how I fair.  I have to say, I really have not been hungry.  The first few days a diet usually are so hard.  Not so with this one.

Thanks again,

Sally

Mrsarroz, Mushergirl and Salgal,

It's so nice to get some conversation going about this eating plan.   I can't wait to try your recipe for stuffed peppers, Mushergirl.   I've never made them, as my husband doesn't like peppers.   But since I started eliminating all animal products and all bread/cereal products (but 2 bowls of oatmeal a week), from Ash Wed. to Easter, he's been eating different meals than I have anyway.    So, I will definitely give them a try.   I remember someone telling me they liked using red peppers better than green for stuffing.    Have you tried those?    Have you tried freezing them?

I've been looking through my Light 'n Tasty annual cookbooks again tonight and have actually found a lot of possibilities.    I'm thinking of trying a few out to bring to Easter dinner.    I stir fry quite a bit, using olive oil flavored Pam and a non-stick pan.  Sometimes I use a bag of frozen stirfry veggies and sometimes I throw in whatever I have.     I just sprinkle lite soy sauce on it or a couple Tbsp. of stir fry sauce.    I just cook up a few skinless chicken strips for my hubby and make some brown rice for him too.   If I find any recipes I really like, I'll let you know.   Right now my meals consist of really big salads, too.   I load them with lots of different veggies, beans and 1/2 an apple. and they are delicious.   I know I'm getting my pound of raw veggies, it's the cooked ones I fall short of some days.     I make smoothies quite often too.   Usually just vanilla protein powder, water and frozen fruit.   They are yummy and make a nice "dessert".   I've also just used light vanilla soy milk with frozen fruit.

I think from all the years of dieting, my body is messed up and I seem to have a lot of trouble losing the weight lately.   Or maybe it's my age, as I hear women tend to gain weight or have trouble losing it during menopause, and that has to be approaching.   I dropped 7 pounds fast, last Ocotober, when I started Eat to Live.   Then I put it and more, back on while "cheating" during Christmas when the kids were all home.   Dr. Fuhrman said if you have trouble losing weight to go the meatless route and no more than 1 bread, I think, so that's why I'm giving it a try during lent.

I just feel so good eating this way.   I have trouble with back and neck muscle spasms from an old car accident.    Even shoveling that 20 inches of snow we got 2 weeks ago didn't bother me for long.    The muscles just loosened up and feel good.

I am waiting for a wedding.   Both of my girls are married and my son has been dating the same girl for 6 years now.   They are now both out of college, with full-time jobs. so we are looking for a ring soon.   I was so heavy for my oldest daughters wedding, and I hate looking at those pictures of me.   I was a little lighter for my second daughter's wedding than I am right now, but I'd love to be about 140-145 by the time my son's rolls around.     Stay strong:D     Hisgal:heart:  Pat

Hi All,

Pat, I saw your posts in the diary forum and that's a good idea.  I started keeping a diary myself when I was counting calories but with this diet I haven't kept it up because I seem to do be doing ok so far.

I saw a post somewhere (maybe here, maybe somewhere else) that someone said they get enough salad or raw veggies but struggle with the cooked.  And then I saw another post where someone said they quit in the beginning because it took them 2hours to eat 1 plate of veggies and then a couple of hours later they were hungry again.  I can relate to both because in the beginning it took me about 2 hours per plate of veggies (luckily I work from home) and I thought to myself that it's like a job just trying to eat all that, when will I find time to do anything else?  I was hungry too, but I read a little more indepth and found out that beans are the key.  Once I added the beans my hunger was satiated.  I don't think it takes me 2 hours anymore but I have found that by combining the raw and the cooked I can get them both in.:P

Wow! I am so glad to hear I am not to only one who took so long to eat her salad! I am doing better now but at first it seemed to take so long.  I also agree that beans are the key!  I have no problem eating a cup of them per day.  I probably don't get my 1lb. of cooked/steamed veggies either but try to make up for it in raw.  I think it is very important, like Dr. Fuhrman says, to eat the salad first as the main course--when I do that there really isn't room for "my" steak so I just skip it.

Hello,

Where did everyone go?  It appears this page does not get much action.  Wondering how everyone is doing?

I have been hungry last two days.  Wondering about the snacking thing.  The book give so little information there.  It just states no snacking.  Does that mean I need to stuff myself at mealtime?  Cause I do feel hungry pretty quick after breakfast.  But I have been eating fruit for breakfast.

I also have been real tired.  Is that normal?

I am not sure about the snacking issue.  I also got hungry between meals but I did snack, on raw carrots (the baby ones), or other raw veggies like celery, cauliflower florets, broccoli (which wasn't a big hit with me).  That seemed to take care of my hunger, didn't add that many calories to the overall picture and I continued to lose weight.

I wondered if the book meant traditional American eating habit snacking (chips, etc...)

Anyone else have ideas/insight?

What about the tiredness issue?  Did anyone else experience that?  I have been working out everyday and sometimes up to 2 hours a day.   I guess that is why?

I was looking at HisGal's diary and I see she does snack (healthy).  I think that I need a little more protein than I am getting.  I will try a healthy protein bar.

Now I have to find that recipie Pat was talking about.

By the way Pat, awesome job on the diary.  I want to spend more time reading it.  Right now I need to input reciepts into the computer though at home. (Yuck!)

Hope to hear more from everyone later,

Sally

Hi All:D

Sally, thanks for the compliment on the diary.   Sometimes I forget that so many others might be reading it too.   It helps keep me grounded and accountable.

I can't say that I've felt really tired.   I don't exercise as much as you do...I have trouble just getting in my time at Curves, although I did stop down at the park today for a short walk too.   We finally hit spring....70's for 2 days in a row:cool:   Do you know what percent of your calories are coming from protein?   Nevd's recipe was a big help in the protein department and also the protein shakes (another of Nevd's ideas).   The recipe is in the "Recipes" section of the forum and the topic is called "Chocolate Banana Oatcakes".   Trimblebe has added some variations which I've tried and liked too.    I held off trying them for a few weeks, simply because of converting them from metric.   I kept getting different amounts from different online calculators.   Then I remembered an old Weight Watchers scale up in a high cupboard, which weighed in grams, and my measuring cup has the ml. markings on it.    I was good to go!   Ask if you have any questions.

I like to eat a lot of food.   Some ladies in  the office will go downstairs and grab a few pretzels or a carton of yogurt for their entire lunch:shock:   That's not for me.   When I lost my first 60 pounds, I felt like I ate all the time and the weight just dropped off of me.   So, after reading a lot about it on this site, I decided to go back to the idea of eating at least 6 times a day.   It's suppose to keep your metabolism up and keep your body from going into starvation mode.   Besides, I just like to eat:P    Now I just make sure that I'm making healthy choices.

I can relate to putting receipts in the computer:nono:    Maybe it's the bookkeeper in me, but I just insist on recording every single thing we spend in my Quicken program.  It makes tax time so easy, or looking up when we bought something, or how much we paid for it, etc.   The trouble is that I don't take time to keep up with it during the year, and at the beginning/middle of March I start putting in all the receipts from January of the previous year!!   Well, tax appt is Thursday, and I got all of November in last night.    As soon as I get home, I am tied to that computer again.   There is just so much "life" to get in the way all the time.   Keep up the good work everyone!  Hisgal:heart:  Pat

Hi HisGal,

Yeah, I think protein will make a difference.  I bought some tofu yesterday.  Now I need to figure out what to do with it.  Ha.  I will check out the recipie page you mentioned.

I ate two lunches today.  1 was a pita with onions lettuce and a little tahini.  Then a couple of hours later I had romaine and beans.  So the total calories was about 550ish.   Started the day with a bowl of stawberries (2cups whole)

I am satisfied right now, so I guess smaller meals are better for me.

On the reciepts, my husband insists that I keep them up all year long.  We can tell you how much we spent on our kids formula, diapers, my makeup, etc.  It is not my idea of how to do things.  I figure as long as I have checks in the checkbook, I should have money in the bank.  Ha!

I live in Sunny AZ.  It is 81 degrees out right now (4:00pm)

Got to go again.  My step class beckons.

Sally,

Well, I just finished putting December's receipts in the computer.   That is always such a big month, with Christmas shopping.   I still have my hubby's checkbook to enter, but he doesn't write many checks each month.   I just can't wait until the weekend when this is all done.

I can't wait until Easter comes and I will add the breads back in.   I found some fat free 100% whole grain pitas that I really like.   I bought some flavored hummus (spicy three pepper) that I really like too.   It has 50 cal and 3 g. fat (none saturated) in 2 Tbsp.   I put it in a pita for a snack or with mini carrots.   Breads are my addiction.   If I quit losing or start gaining, I will cut them way back again.   I just want to get this weight off, so I can maintain it instead of working so hard to get it off.

Let me know if you find some tofu recipes.   I've found some salad recipes, that have it in.   But, some have talked of marinated tofu, and I was wondering if I could just use a meat marinade?   Like teriyaki or mesquite?   I want to try Mushergirl's recipes for stuffed peppers too.

My in-laws just came back from AZ.   They spend the winters there.   They can't wait to get out of MN the day after Christmas, and don't come back again until all their friends head home in April.

Until later,  Hisgal:heart:  Pat

Hey Hisgal,

Where in Arizona do you in-laws stay in the winter?  My in-laws are snowbirds too.  They own a home in Sun City.  They live in the Grand Rapids area in the warmer months.

They stay in Apache Junction.   I'll have to ask them if they know anybody from Michigan.    Seems like they know so many people.   But, is Sun City on the north side of Phoenix?    Apache Junction is on the SE side, I think.    We've never been down there, as the winter months are my busiest at work.

Ha,

I lived in Apache Junction from 13 to 18.  My parents are still there.  They live on the foothils of the Superstion Mountains.

Do your in-laws live in a trailer park?  There are so many in Apache Junction.

Sun City is in the North West part of the Valley.  You are right.

Yes, they do live in an RV park-Golden Vista, I think.   It's on Goldfield Rd. S.

Hi, Sally:)   Sorry if I kept everybody in suspense....it was a crazy day at work yesterday.   My boss came back from a month in AZ and I had so many other things to do as well.   Then came 2 evenings in a row working on those receipts until after 10:30 p.m., but I am finally done with those and ready for the tax appt at 5:00 today.

Still keeping you in suspense, aren't I?   Well, the week before I had gone up 1.8 lbs. and couldn't explain it, as I measure just about everything I eat.    But this last week I dropped down 5 pounds:thumbsup:, which put me at a total of 15.4 for the 6 weeks, and I was by far the winner in the office :ribbon:   I had actually started a few days earlier than everyone else, so from that first weigh in, I was down 17 pounds!   I was flying so high yesterday, you can't imagine!   We have now set another mini-goal until June 1, and I am hoping to have 10 pounds off by then.  (Maybe ambitious for 6 weeks?)   But, if I stick religiously to Eat to Live, I really think I can do it.    I am seeing the possibility of reaching my goal of 145 by the August shopping trip with the girls!

Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement on this site.   It's helped so much!  Bless you all;)

Wow!  That is awesome Pat!  I am so happy for you.  Keep up the excellant work.  NO pressure or anything, but you and Mushgirl are my role models.  Super cool

I got on the scale today and I think I am down 4 lbs. maybe even 5.  Pretty cool.  My scale was broken but my husband fixed it last night.  So I should be able to watch it a little closer now.

I only have 2 weeks until the confirmation (shortest goal) and 4 until the wedding.  But then I am hoping this summer to do a AZ getaway with my husband.  The resorts cut their rates drastically in the summer here.

Well off to Workout!

Woooooo! Way To Go!!!  :D  That is so good.

I've kinda bottomed out at 141--143.  I am back on track with my eating habits so am hoping to see it start creeping down again.  I'm going to go ahead and make the dress for the May 20 wedding using my present size and it's such that 5 more pounds won't alter the fit drastically.

Things are drying up outside so I should be able to start running again without being a muddy mess.  That will help me. Should be able to go back to mushing the dogs using a wheeled cart in another month or so so that will be even better!

Keep us posted on all the weigh-ins!

Thanks for the praise and encouragement, Sally & Barb:D   I can't believe how much this site and the support helps me.   Just knowing I have to write it down and be accountable is incentive to stick with it.    I would so love to be at 141, I can't remember the last time I weighed so little.   Must have been about the time I was pregnant with my first daughter, who just turned 29....that's a lot of years.    I was 125 in high school, but at age 50 I'm not looking to get down that far again.   I guess I just want to be as healthy as I can be.

I am still a little worried over how I will handle Easter.   I want a splurge day, but I don't want to go on a binge that would undo the hard work of the last 7 weeks.  I have to remember, it's just one day and get back on the wagon, so to speak.

Sally, I am happy to report that I got all the receipts in the computer, and had the tax appt. and we are even getting a good refund:D   Now I have to discipline myself to sit back down, and get Jan-Mar in right away.   Maybe the discipline I'm learning in food choices will carry over into the rest of my life?

If I don't have time to get back online, I'd like to wish you two a Blessed Easter:heart:  And to everyone else reading this too!   Maybe all your Easter treats be low-fat jelly beans, instead of high-fat chocolate!     Hisgal:heart:  Pat

Hey Mushgirl, HisGal,

Happy Easter to the both of you too!

I am going to my inlaws for Easter dinner.  They always have ham and ice cream and everything else.  I offered to bring a spinach salad.  I will leave the dressing off and make a special one for me.  I make a sweet spinach salad with chopped nuts, chopped green onions, mandarin oranges poppy and sesame seeds and feta cheese.  So I will make a dressing with fake sugar and trace amounts of olive oil in it for me.  That will be the bulk of my dinner.  I will also bring a mega bowl of sliced strawberries a little tea for later and I'm set.

Hope you both do well over the candy laden holiday.

Hi Everybody!

How did the Easter meals go?    I wasn't perfect, but then I didn't plan to be.   This was my splurge day.    I surprised myself.....I thought I'd head for the cereal this morning.   That's all I could think of for weeeks, was wanting cereal and milk (soy, of course) for breakfast.   But I made my regular protein shake instead, and finished off about 3-4 oz. of fat free yogurt leftover from the dessert I was making to take to  Easter at my sister-in-laws.    I had a few other victories today also.   I still did not have a diet soda, even though I took them along:devil:   But, I filled my water bottles and got really tempted when the second bottle of water ran out around 2:30.    I did eat "treats", but they were jelly bellies and tropical fruit trail mix, just like I planned.   I left my hands off the chocolate.   For lunch I did have the first meat I'd eaten in 7 weeks...I do love ham, and this one was good.   But to go with it, I had fresh fruit, the marinated veggies/Italian drsg salad I brought, and a low fat bean salad  that my daughter brought.   No cheesy potatoes, no green bean casserole, etc.

I did  have dessert, but remember I was bringing half of it, so I made a low-fat grasshopper pie, and an strawberry/raspberry trifle.   I had a little of each, and you'd never know that they were made with low fat, fat free, and sugar free products.   I brought a pkg. of whole wheat buns (I knew they'd have all white ones).   I did take a piece of cake (we had a niece's birthday to celebrate too) for dinner tonight, but it was carrot cake, and I scraped off the frosting.

One piece of good news was that I peeked at the scale this morning, and I was down 1.6 lbs from Wednesday:D

I'm thinking doing this 6 weeks of Eat to Live, without the meat and the bread was one of the best things I've done.    I will know better as the week goes on, but I think I've turned a corner.    I was a little afraid of this day, thinking I'd pig out all day, if I allowed myself a "cheat day".   But I didn't.  I feel a little yucky tonight, but that's probably the sugar in the jelly beans and dried fruit.   I'm not used to those foods anymore.     I think Dr. Fuhrman said to give this way of eating 6 weeks trial, and maybe that's what it took.

I looked at the relatives today, and what they had on their plates, and could only think of the fat and calories they were consuming.    And some of them need to diet more than I do!   I am actually starting to believe that I'll make it!

Sally, what did you decide to do about the snacks?     Are you still feeling the tiredness that you talked about earlier?    And what is tahini?    Can you get it in the grocery store?

Hope to hear you had a good weekend!    Hisgal:heart:  Pat

Hi HisGal,

Sound like you did great!  Wow!.

I am feeling more normal now.  I think I am adjusting.  Not as tired as I was.

I didn't do horrible this weekend but I didn't do great either.  I worked all day Saturday in my yard and I was paying my nephew to help me.  So instead of taking the time I needed to eat right I just threw down a bagel with peanut butter on it at lunch time.  I skipped breakfast and I had another bagel for dinner.  (oh, I guess that was bad)

I got on the scale earlier that day (Saturday morning) and it moved up and really put me in a bad mind set.  I am not really that over weight.  I weigh 146.  I want to get down to 128.  It is just that I have this party coming and I really wanted to look good for it.

Late Saturday I went clothes shopping with my 14 year old daughter.  I got really down on myself there. :dizzy: I am sooo impatient.

I did pretty good on Easter.  I only ate the salads and just took a bite of an awesome chocolate cake.  Nibbled on a few jelly beans later in the day and that was it.

So today  is Monday and I have already worked out and am back on track with the diet.  I have decided not to get on the scale for a couple of weeks cause it can send me off on a binge.  So I am just gonna keep on keeping on.

The Confirmation will come and go and I still need to keep on going.

Hope you have a great day.  You are such an inspiration to me.  Your determination and reslove are wonderful traits that I aspire to have myself.

Sally;)

Hi Sally,

Glad to hear Easter went well....don't get too down on yourself.   We're all human, and as such, can never be perfect.:)   Think of the brite side of this...at least you were very active, if you were doing yardwork with your nephew.  A bad weekend to me, would be pigging:pig: out in front of the TV as a couch potato.   Or think of it like this, you had a bagel each time, not the whole bag!

It's easy to get down trying on clothes:(   But I just think about what size I would have had to try on 2 months ago!   I am making progress!   And sometimes trying clothes on helps to motivate me.    The hubby and I are going for a weekend away at the end of April, so I can shop at my favorite stores.   I'm not sure if I want to buy anything yet, but was hoping I'd need a few interim pants, to see me through on my way down to my goal.

Today hasn't been the best day so far.    I got right back at it on Monday.   But the lady who is doing a weight loss challenge with me in the office wanted to go out for a "splurge" before we do our weigh in on Thursday (and the beginning of the 6 week challenge).   It was the local Mexican restaurant....I thought I'd made pretty good choices until I tried to add it up!   I can't imagine what the fat and calories was in those cheese laden burritos, refried beans and rice that the others had.

This week will probably not show much progress, as I have a wedding on Saturday.   That will be 3 days when I won't be on plan totally.    Oh well, I can look at the bright side...at least I can eat and feel well!  My oldest daughter just found out she's pregnant, and the morning sickness just kicked in!   I guess a good share of her mornings at work are spent running to the bathroom:(    She isn't telling anybody yet, because she just miscarried in November, and wants to make it through the first trimester.   I don't think she appreciated my comment about being grateful for the sickness, because it means she's still pregnant:D   She had been following Eat to Live loosely, but now said the veggies make her sick and she craves meat and breads.

What courage to not step on the scale!    I find that if I avoid it, I backslide.   I need it to keep me accountable, and to see the success.   Isn't that sad....because it also depresses me if it goes up, and that affects my whole outlook.    I wish my weight, the losses and gains, didn't rule my life so much.

Mushergirl and Mrsarroz, are you still out there?           Hisgal:heart:  Pat
