I feel by publicly posting everything I consume and what little exercise I do, it'll add a bit of pressure to remain disciplined. In other words, I'll try to stay on the wagon and mitigate any scathing criticism of my poor dietary choices.
I need to remain focused. If the coming days prove successful, I will open up with a few thoughts on diet, nutrition, the root cause of my weight gain, etc. For now, I really don't have a "plan of attack". I pretty much know what is good, what is bad. The trick is to consume more of the "good" stuff (stuff that will provide sustenance as well as heal and provide health).
My intention was to create a blog but then I remembered this web site. This thread will do just fine.
Current weight: 156 lbs (I hovered between 143 and 147 just last year. I was 137 as recently as 2005. And between 122 and 128 throughout my 20s. I'm in my late 30s now.)
Goal: 130 lbs
Timeline: Will try for 5lbs weight loss per month. 140lbs by Xmas would be awesome.
Day 1: September 28th, 2009
9 glasses of water (maybe more)
2 ounces wheatgrass (from Robek's Juice)
2 banana (200 calories)
1 bag of broccoli and cheese sauce (Green Giant frozen food item)(150 calories)
2 serving (12oz) of almond milk (Almond Breeze) (150x2 = 300 calories)
with 1 "coffee stick" (20x2 = 40 calories)
1lb of red grapes (250 calories??)
3 Fiber Choice tablets (45 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 1 Fiber Choice tablet
Exercise: walked 5 miles (1 hr 45 min)
Approximate total caloric consumption: 985 calories
I'm tempted to eat an avocado... but will save it for tomorrow.

Hi. I make grapes to be 60 kcal/100g so 454g of grapes would be 272 calories. broccoli is a good start but I'd like to see more veggies.
You should be eating no less than your unadjusted RMR. (You didn't specify your height or specific age, but for a guy your weight and approximate age I'm sure it is no less than 1500) so eating 800 calories is definitely not what you want to do. Use the BMR/RMR calculator (link above = 'Calories Burned Calculator') to figure yours out.Last edited on 29 September 2009 06:28 am by Nir

Hi Nir! thanks for the info! I am only 5' 5". So I'm almost OBESE according to the BMI Index. Not sure what RMR is but I'll look it up. I did eat a banana after hours last night so the caloric count was really 1000 when you factor that along with a readjusted count for the grapes. I was under the impression that wheatgrass would be a pretty decent substitute for a salad and veggies. I intend on eating more veggies, but when I don't, I'm going to drink a shot or two of fresh wheat grass.Last edited on 29 September 2009 05:38 pm by minus25

Current weight: 155 lbs
Day 2: September 29th, 2009
10 glasses of water (maybe more)
1 ounce wheatgrass (from Robek's Juice)
1 serving coffee drink (1 cup almond milk + water)(90+20=110 calories)
1 bag of broccoli and cheese sauce (Green Giant frozen food item)(150 calories)
1 avocado (300 calories)
1 can of vegetarian Hormel chili (can)(380 calories)
1 banana (100)
2 Fiber Choice tablets (15x2 = 30 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets, 1 garlic extract
Exercise: walked 5 miles (1 hr 45 min)
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1080 calories
Regrets: That can of chili wasn't that tasty. Not worth the 380 calorie price. In fact, with all the ingredients listed on the can, I'd classify it as junk food. Impulsive meal selection. Too bad... I'd rather have had a 2nd avocado or an additional 3 bananas.
RMR: It's about 1800.

Current weight: 154 lbs
Day 3: September 30th, 2009
10 glasses of water (maybe more)
1 shake (1 banana blended with almond milk, added tiny amount of Nature's Plus "Energy shake" powder (all that was left)) (probably 250 calories)
1 shake (1 banana blended with almond milk) (probably 250 calories)
1 bag of broccoli and cheese sauce (Green Giant frozen food item)(150 calories)
1 "Sweet Asian Potstickers" entree (Healthy Choice frozen food item; includes vegetables & tofu on a bed of whole grain rice & sweet asian style sauce)(380 calories)
3 Fiber Choice tablets (15x3 = 45 calories)
1 pear (100)
1 banana (100)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 3 Fiber Choice tablets, 1 garlic extract
Exercise: walked 90 minutes
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1275 calories
Note: I didn't realize the Healthy Choice entree was 380 calories when I bought it. Typically, I'm used to these items being between 270 and 300 calories. I would have passed on it had I realized... It was better than the chili I had yesterday though.

Current weight: 154.5 lbs
Day 4: October 1st, 2009
10 glasses of water
1 shake (1 banana blended with almond milk) (probably 250 calories)
1 banana
2 Fiber Choice tablets (15x2 = 30 calories)
Souplantation Lunch/Dinner:
Salad: Romaine/Spinach w/small amount of Italian dressing, 5 cherry tomatoes, 2 slices of cucumber, small amount of olive slices, some raisins, some broccoli, tiny amount of "Carrot/Pineapplie/Raisin/honey salad" on the side, 2 spoonfuls of peas on the side. All was pretty nutritious and clean and uncooked except for the small hint of honey in the carrot salad portion. Just 1 plateful (not even close to the matterhorn portions you typically see here). not nearly as much as you'd think. My guess is 300 calories max.
Soup: 1 cup vegetable/minestrone (tasted no salt, oddly). 100 calories
Disaster (PURE JUNK FOOD):
2 "Georgia Peach/Poppyseed" mini muffins (150x 2 = 300 calories)
1 "Fruit medley" bran mini muffin ("98% fat free")(130 calories)
4 cheese focaccia bread things (looks like pizza). portions were small, but still, PURE JUNK. (based on data at the Souplantation site, estimate is 180 calories per. 4x180 = 720 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets, 1 garlic extract
Exercise: walking (5 miles). 1 hour and 45 minutes
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1930 calories
Note: Today was an apocalyptic day, twice my daily calorie goal (I'm striving to keep it at 1000). It was an insanely stressful day at work and I wasn't myself. This is a major problem of mine: Dealing with stress. It's an odd relationship with food. At one end of the spectrum, I deal with stress by overeating. At the other, I eat for celebratory reasons. Weekends are usually my downfall. Well, I'll try to offset today's damages by eating superclean on Friday. I am so tired (due to all the food, I think). I wanted to take a day off from exercise today, but I didn't earn it. time to wrap the ankles up and prep for a 5 mile walk...

Current weight: 153.5 lbs
Day 5: October 2nd, 2009
10 glasses of water
1 shake (1 banana blended with almond milk) (probably 250 calories)
2 Fiber Choice tablets (15x2 = 30 calories)
1 vanilla latte w/soy milk at Peet's Coffee & Tea (290 calories)
1 Sweet & Sour entree at Vegan World (tofu, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, red& green bell peppers, celery, bean sprouts, onion, garlic, zucchini & seasoning. served with steamed black rice (actually more purple than black)(hmmmmm. my guess was that this was 700 calories. probably overestimating it. we'll find out on the scale tomorrow)
1 coconut water, raw, from husk (150 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets, 1 garlic extract
Exercise: 5 minutes of weights, 35 minute walk
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1420 calories
Note: In spite of the eating binge from yesterday (Day 4), I seem to be still on track. In fact, it appears I could have gone down to 153lbs if I had tamed myself. Big relief that I didn't go to 155 or worse. Even with the fair amount of exercise, my pace seems to be to lose a couple pounds per week.

Hi there, Terabyte!!! thanks for taking notice! I appreciate the support. Yeah, I feel good that the scale isn't going up. I think this diary is really helping me. To me it seems (I imagine) like the equivalent of attending a daily overeaters anonymous meeting.
I do have a red flag alert though... The weekend is here. And I'll be visiting my mom and sister tomorrow and they do spoil me when I'm visiting. And I mean with food!! It will be quite a test.
I'll probably post again on Sunday night (2 days worth of data).
Have a great weekend!

Current weight: 152 lbs
Day 6: October 3rd, 2009
6 glasses of water
1 wheatgrass (1 ounce)
1 apple/celery/ginger juice jr-size (freshly juiced at Robek's)(180 calories)
1 shake (1 banana blended with 1/2cup almond milk+water) (probably 150 calories)
1 vanilla latte w/soy milk, grande (Starbucks)(240 calories)
1 soy chicken parmigiana (500 cal)
1 zucchini casserole (300 cal)
1 spaghetti w/veggies and soy meat (300 cal)
1 serving of Doritos chips (200 cal)
1 12oz serving of root beer (A&W) (200 cal)
3 slices of zucchini/walnut loaf desert (600 cal)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium,
Exercise: none
Approximate total caloric consumption: 2670 calories
Note: Portions were moderate, but problem was food was so good I went back for seconds. Much of the calorie count is estimated. And it was a festive occasion: USC beat Cal. And the Dodgers finally clinched the NL Western Division title. About my weigh in in the morning: Yeah, I was thrilled by the 152 reading. But I knew it wouldn't last.

Current weight: 155 lbs*
Day 7: October 4th, 2009
8 glasses of water, approximately
1 teeccinno latte (herbal coffee) w/soy milk (250 cal)
1 apple/cherry/pomegranate juice (300 cal)
6 enchiladas w/soy cheese and fresh red sauce (800 cal)
2 mangos (2x135 = 270 cal)
1 Fiber One oats 'n chocolate bar (140 cal)
3 Fiber choice tablets (15x3 = 45 cal)
Supplements: 3 Fiber Choice tablets
Exercise: 30 minutes walking
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1805 calories
* Weigh in was in the late afternoon after I had stuffed myself. Before exercise or any bio break. I was shocked by the setback but didn't panic.
Note: One really important weapon to carry with you when you know you'll be eating a lot, especially non-raw or processed foods, is a bottle of enzyme capsules and take a few with each meal. Unfortunately, I have none and can't afford them at this time. A month's supply usually sets me back about $22. One way around it is to just eat foods high in enzymes (i.e. fruits and vegetables). I'm trying.

2 Fiber Choice tablets (2x15 = 30 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets
Exercise: walking, 1 hour
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1380 calories
Note: If I can continue this pace, I will lose 12 lbs per month. That would be incredible.

Day 9: October 6th, 2009
10 glasses of water, approximately
1 pear (100 calories)
2 bananas (200 calories)
1 avocado (300 calories)
1 vegetable lasagna (Michael Angelo's frozen food entree) (345 cal)
1 Almond milk vanilla+ chocolate (300 calories, estimate)
1 Sweet & Sour entree at Vegan World (tofu, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, red& green bell peppers, celery, bean sprouts, onion, garlic, zucchini & seasoning. served with steamed black rice (actually more purple than black)(my guess is 700 calories)
2 Fiber Choice tablets (30 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets
Exercise: none
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1975 calories
Note: Very stressful day. Considering the lack of sleep and amount of stress suffered today, it really could have been worse. I know I'm not going to lose a significant amount of weight like this. I really need to aim for 1000 calories. Today was as bad as Saturday: No exercise and in the 2000 range. Not good. Need to stay focused.

Day 10: October 7th, 2009
10 glasses of water, approximately (90 ounces water)
2 banana (200 calories)
2 Almond milk vanilla+ chocolate (3x270 = 810 calories, estimate)
1 'gardein' bbq pulled shreds (vegetable & grain ingredients) (320 calories)
4 Fiber Choice tablets (60 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 2 Fiber Choice tablets
Exercise: 60 minutes, walking
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1390 calories
Note: Those 'bbq pulled shreds' (by gardein) were the most delicious thing I've eaten in the past 2 weeks! Bought this at Whole Foods yesterday. Will have to go back for more. I was hungry for some solid food, but the Almond milk drinks were too costly in calories. Addictive.

Day 11: October 8th, 2009
10 glasses of water, approximately (90 ounces water)
1 Almond milk - chocolate, 20oz (300 calories, estimate)
1 "Nature's Grill Quesadilla" at Poquito Mas (fresh grilled eggplant, mushrooms, zucchini, red and green bell peppers, white onions, jack cheese, in fresh made flour tortilla. I added some jalepenos and salsa.)(estimated 1500 calories)
1/2 container of Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream (chocolate flavored)(300 cal)
4 Fiber Choice tablets (60 calories)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium, 4 Fiber Choice tablets
Exercise: none
Approximate total caloric consumption: 2160 calories
Note: I really don't know how many calories that quesadilla was. There was a minimal amount of cheese. And I ordered it without sour cream or guac. But the flour tortilla alone is probably 500 calories. And what about the oil? It just "looked" like it was 1500 calories. Hence, no more food for today. Unfortunately, I don't think I will have time for a walk though... I'm sure the scale will go back up to 154 tomorrow morning. Add'l note: uh, I "discovered" a container in my freezer of coconut milk ice cream... I totally forgot about it. And of course could not resist. No big deal. The Dodgers won in a stunning miracle of a game. Celebrate!

1 teeccinno latte (herbal coffee) w/soy milk (250 cal)

2 enchiladas w/soy cheese (400 cal)
1 Acai Bowl (Robek's Juice) (350 cal)
1 Almond milk (chocolate), about 15 oz. (150 cal)
Supplements: 1 B-Complex, 1 Coral Calcium
Exercise: 15 minutes, walking
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1660 calories
Note: Been stuck at 153 lbs for several days. At this rate, I'll lose just 6 pounds per month. Sigh. Well, that was the initial goal I set for myself. I'll try to do better these next few days though... I think psychologically it would be highly beneficial if I could reach the 140s range. I'm going to try to get to 149 this week. I need to renew my enthusiasm or sense of excitement about this weight loss project.

Note: Those fruit bars were a total of 20 grams of fat (total for all 4). Need to be careful. I had a coupon so I got 10 of the bars for just $5. I ran out of B-Complex multi vitamins. Will have to wait till end of the week (payday) before I can buy more.

10 glasses of water
1 peach (70 calories)
1 coconut water, Vita Coco, 5oz (35 calories)
1 bag of broccoli and cheese sauce (Green Giant frozen food item)(150 calories)
2 smoothie (1/2 refrigerated banana, 12 oz vanilla Almond milk (Almond Breeze),
small amount of Yoplait Smoothie triple berry frozen fruit and yogurt bits)(2x200= 400 cal)
1 20oz serving of Almond milk (chocolate, vanilla)(250 cal)
3 SoyJoy all natural fruit & soy bars *berry* (3 x 130 = 390 cal)
1 SoyJoy all natural fruit & soy bar *apple walnut* (140 cal)
4 Fiber Choice tablets (60 calories)
Supplements: 1 Coral Calcium
Exercise: 1 hour walking. Had to cut the walk short. Didn't wrap my left ankle properly (hence the blister, then foaming hydrogen peroxide routine)
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1495 calories
Note: 20 grams of fat from the fruit bars alone. Lots of sugar today, lately. Not sure if that's why I got a headache. Had to pop an Advil today. 41g fiber, 120g of sugar, 27g protein. Anyway, it is plainly obvious why I'm in a rut: 5 consecutive days without exercise (except Sunday, but that was nothing). It is raining outside right now, yeah, seems like the first time it's rained in a decade (Los Angeles). Not sure what I'll wear. Here I go...
BTW, that smoothie was better than what I usually order at Jamba Juice (Protein Berry Workout)

1 smoothie 16 oz "Chocolate Mylkshake" (a $7.99 smoothie at Leaf Organics)(maybe 500 calories?)
1 oz. Wheatgrass shot (calories minimal)
Supplements: 1 Coral Calcium
Exercise: 20 minutes, walking
Approximate total caloric consumption: 2005 calories
Note: I think the amount of calories I'm averaging is great to maintain weight, but not so good for weight loss. Need to somehow get comfortable with 1000 to 1200 calories. If I could cut back on the Almond milk, maybe. Fortunately, the fruit bars are all gone now.

Note: I was surprised by the scale reading. I'm a 1/2 pound away from this week's goal (where I stated I'd love to reach the 140s within the week, which I didn't really think was possible). I'm comfortable with my meals this past month. It's just "outside" influences I have to be wary of. Anyway, it's Friday. And I have no plans for the weekend... which is good, in terms of my diet. Although there wasn't much nutrition in my meals today... not enough to offset the damage, anyway. Still, the Dodgers came back to beat the Phillies in Game 2 and I needed to celebrate!!

Exercise: 1 hour, 40 minutes. Walking
Approximate total caloric consumption: 955 calories
Note: I was mortified by falling back to the 150 range. So I kept it a bit light today (I think I did). From reading other diaries on the site, people seem to do well with a "fasting day" as a part of their plan. I don't think I'm capable of it... but I think it's a good idea. Once I get to 139.5, I think I will be so excited, that I'll probably implement a 1-day fast (once per week) to accelerate this weight loss project. For now, slow and steady is more realistic for me.

Note: Can I get to 140 by Halloween? No, but I'm going to go for 145.
Too bad about the Dodgers last night. How heartbreakingly devastating. I don't want to think too much about the psychology of the sports fan, but the stream of emotions after such a loss, after season after failed season, you do begin to philosophize whether the time and empathy and loyalty is even worth it, and just how meaningful is it (spectator sports) in a world so corrupt and mad... Of course, we'll never change. There's always hope.

Trend: Over 50grams of fat today. I'm losing control.
I've also noticed for 4 days in a row (and 6 of the last 7) I've eaten a "bread" of some type. Definitely not good. If there's a surefire way of getting even fatter, it's eating breads (that includes tortillas, flatbreads, etc). Need to tread with extreme caution here.

At one point I was at 147.5, but that was before I had anything to eat.

1 self made salad (spinach, romaine, a few olives, raisins, sesame seeds, italian fat free dressing). (guess: 300 calories)
1 steamed vegetables (100 cal)
2 mini blueberry muffins (280 calories)
1 1/2 cups soup: Pumpkin Bisque with Pine Nuts (1.5 x 190 = 290 calories)
4 focaccia breads w/ cheese (I tore off most of the bread and ate mostly the cheese n sauce parts)(normally 190 each. guess 600 calories)
Supplements: 1 B complex, 5 enzyme caps, 4 citrucel fiber caps
Exercise: tbd
Approximate total caloric consumption: 1925 calories
Note: Milestone. Ten pounds lost since I started this diary!! Exactly 43 days (6 weeks) to lose 10 pounds. Is it fair to assume I can be at 136 lbs by Day 86? Day 86 would be December 23rd! What a great Xmas day gift to myself that would be.
I'm happy with my progress, but a little dissappointed in how long it's really taking. Still, I have to concede that I'm still eating a large amount of food and still eating what I like... and still somehow losing weight. I wish I had kept this diary sooner... It is definitely the KEY to my weight loss, no doubt about it. Keeps me honest.
I'm definitely embarrassed by some of those posts, especially the 2500 and 3000 calorie days, or the consecutive days without any exercise.
According to my posts, I have exercised only 18 times in 43 days (excludes days I did less than 30 minutes).
Anyway, the next milestone for me would be to reach the 130s: Big celebration when I can hit 139.5.

Hey Joe! Congratulations on the 10lb loss!
I like your diary. It is very organized. You are very determined and persistent.
I found the "public disclosure" of food eaten helps a lot, too. For me every time I thought about eating something bad, in the back of my mind I would think, Geesh I'll have to post this tonight!
Have you thought about using your data to estimate what your average calories burned per day has been? It would be interesting to see how it compares with the calculators on here.
Keep going!

Thank you for the support & the Blue Ribbon, Nancy!!!! It really means a lot coming from you because when I started this Diary, it was your diary that inspired it!! I read a few others, but as I scrolled through yours, I said the same thing: She is not only determined, but is a juggernaut in this weight loss battle. You'll notice the structure of my diary is similar to yours! : ) And that's no coincidence.
I haven't really used the Calories Burned calculators (yet) or tried to be too granular or technical with some of these details... A rough approximation is just fine by me. Right now, based on RMR, I assume I'll burn about 1800 calories without exercise. When I do my 90 minute to 2 hour walks, I assume I burned off an additional 400 calories. Pretty simple. I definitely use the food calories calculator to look up a food's approximate # of calories though.
As long as the scale doesn't go back up, I feel I'm on the right track : )
Again, thanks so much for the support!
