Friday

In the morning whilst over-cooking wedges of swede in the microwave I had a small fire (contained within the microwave). Mum showed up with her two phones and I assembled them (inserted SIM card and battery, replaced cover, turned on) and called customer services with her to find out why her name/password were not sent for one of her phones. I then rushed off to the gym to make my step class.

It took an hour to get back home from the class (amongst other things: sampled a cookie at Sainsbury's and a mince pie at Waitrose, and bought orange peppers and honeydew melons at the market, talked with mum, Nash and Jon). I did some research relating to my homework. When the time came to go to OA I decided to skip it. Pretty sure I was unproductive from 7pm till the end of the day though.

Saturday

Got up at 7.40am, had a quick breakfast and headed over to gym whilst talking on phone to Dean. Combat was covered by Cassy (refreshing with her teaching points) and pump was covered by Jo (doing the new release, again) although I was using my 'lower' weights I could probably go even lower for chest. The gym 'star members' were in the house. This wasn't even a concept in my head when I was at the other gym. Afterwards samples at Waitrose included chocolate log cake and some cheese.

I gave myself license to decide what kind of food day to have as I went along, but did end up sticking to the original plan (1400 calories with no carb restriction). Even did a bit more homework research (but nothing written down).

I did try to space my meals. There were just over 5 hours between breakfast and lunch. Much smaller gaps between subsequent feedings though.

Sunday

A busy day, most of which spent reading/listening both about Nestle and about Sales/Marketing, but still hardly any words written down. Just after 4pm mum showed up with some shopping (she was calling me throughout the afternoon asking if I wanted this or that). I then headed off for a much needed break at the gym (the step class was rather poorly attended - only about 5 people!). The girl I mentioned a couple of weeks ago showed up, but a new twist: didn't want to squat with anything more than a 12.5kg bar because she noticed her thighs bulking up and didn't want them to grow further. I think the advice she received is incorrect. I was surprised this came from Angela!

I was planning to have a 1800-calorie day but was feeling calorie-poor throughout the day. At one point I changed it to a 2100-calorie day but after coming back from the gym changed it back to a 1800 calorie day. The different forces at work: I may want to cut but I'm also feeling greedy and I want all the calories I'm allowed (my maintenance calories).

7 day food shopping totals: 2.60 + 4.35 +2.50 + 2.78 + 2 + 0 + 3.79 = £18.02

Monday

As I tossed and turned I was aware that homework was due today and so essentially did nothing but that for the day. Well I did spend some time eating, as always. It wasn't until around 2pm that I entered my foods into the computer - I was just 'flying blind' till then. In the early afternoon mum showed up with 6.2kg of jerusalem artichokes from the allotment - and the two new mobile phones, which I promised to program for her (inserting 12 phone numbers corresponding to seven members in our immediate family, a service I've done for her on every mobile phone she has ever owned). After 2pm, with deadline looming, I started actually drafting my powerpoint thing instead of just researching. When mum showed up to collect the phones around 5.30pm I was in a bit of a panic because my 8MB file looked like it wasn't uploading (but still somehow found the time to show her how to lock/unlock the keypad). Eventually homework was uploaded and I celebrated by making my Combat class for a fun workout.

Once home, and with my 'school holidays' now officially here, I had a major catch-up session with emails (and CPH forum) - and 5-6 hours go very quickly when you do that. Good night!

Tuesday

I woke up and reviewed my appointments. I had forgotten about my counselling appointment (the last one before next term) so although 'on holiday' I'd be visiting college once more after all. Might as well squeeze in a quick veggie-based breakfast and a pump class into the morning too - but first, called the hospital to chase up the missing appointment - it turns out the imaging department has lost all record of it. This made me slightly late for Pump. Several front-row participants were wearing festive stuff. First time I've seen former instructor Michele who is now a participant. During the last song (stretches) the evacuation alarm started. I recognised the danger - not of an actual fire but of being evacuated and therefore be separated from my stuff and ending up missing my counselling session -- so I ran out of the room towards the changing rooms to collect my stuff but then came back to the studio to put my pump stuff away. By that point the instructor had packed up all her stuff so I ended up not picking up a piece from her tin of Quality Street chocolates (which let's face it was 1/2 the reason I came back to the studio) but I did instead pick up a piece of 'Roses' chocolate from the tin at the counsellor's office 30 minutes later. Counselling was about a bunch of different stuff - causes of stress and my attitude to food. Afterwards took a detour to LIDL to survey their vegetable prices (they slightly rotate them twice a week) before heading home and continuing to chase my hospital appointment.

Back home from around 1pm I spent more time catching up with computer things. Mum showed up with catheters to tide me over xmas and new year and a 12kg of jerusalem artichokes from the allotment - surely that must be the end of those! Whilst she was visiting I turned off voicemail on her phone to give her a fighting chance of ever answering her phone which would otherwise go to voicemail before she even registers it was ringing - and also called "with her" to cancel the phone insurance she never desired in the first place (which they make you take when you buy the phone - cancel at your own leisure) naturally she benefited from me treading that path last week: what took me an hour was reduced to a 10 minute affair for her. Mum was then off on an afternoon shopping trip to Bedford. As I was already on a break from the computer I disposed of all my paper and plastics in the recycling bins at that point and had a brief chat with Nash.

When mum was back from Bedford she visited Sainsbury's and from there alerted me to great prices on produce. I guided her on what to get. Later on she asked me to meet her 1/2 way but somehow we missed each other so she got to my place with a trolley-full of stuff and I had to back-track. My stuff cost just under £7 and weighed just over 26kg (that's over 57lb). Quite mad really as I have hardly any space in the fridge and 99% of the stuff spent the night in 2 large cardboard boxes in my room and I will hopefully deal with it on Wednesday!

From 10pm to midnight was doing something related to the job I used to have up till 2006, a mixture of frustration and achievement. Mind you I just found other things to occupy me afterwards (apparently my eBay account got hacked so I had to change credentials and refresh my anti-spyware setup) and bedtime was just before 4am, this was definitely not planned. It was interesting that when I'm busy food does take a back seat relative to when I have more time to eat. Still got my calories in, obviously, but definitely a calorie imbalance towards the evening. Ironically it is when I am busiest that I end up with the 'healthier' approach of spending less time eating. I wonder whether the pattern will repeat on Wednesday.

Wednesday

Despite a late night still got up (thanks to the alarm) and decided to venture out to Step: for the recovery track we did 'Everybody Dance Now' - Jo went amongst the participants whilst 3 of us (myself and a couple of other participants) went up on the stage where she normally teaches. At the end of the class I picked a couple of chocolate pieces from the tin of Quality Street.

A visit to Sainsbury's to get nutrition info for Quality Street (and a price for Red 'AfterShock' - brother (currently in Denemark) emailed to ask for this info).

At home gave myself a haircut which was both severe and long-overdue. I put some produce away but there are still lots of melons and clementines (not to mention mountains of jerusalem artichoke) out here. Had a nap to make up for last night's unreasonable bedtime.

Stopped at Sainsbury's and picked up a mango and 70 small apples (I don't have space for 70 apples, but I don't pass anything at this price - they work out about 1.5p each!) still managed not to be late for Combat. Instead of doing last-minute getting-ready for Christmas, Angela spent 3 hours this afternoon re-learning old combat tracks to satisfy requests. Warm-up was "Listen To Your Heart" and conditioning was "Let's Get It Started", as per my requests some weeks ago, so I'm glad I turned up!

Another scarey fire-in-the-microwave-oven (jerusalem artichokes this time) I need to be more careful! Another calorie-uneven day with lots of calories spent towards the end of the day.

Thursday

Last week Sandra said she won't be teaching Pump so just in case the gym didn't get a replacement I decided to sidestep the aggrevation and get it over with by doing it with Jo in the morning. My chest-weights are at a 1-year low at 17.5 kilos (38.5 lb) for the bar and I'm still feeling it. Jo had a few festive accessories for loan and I wore a red Santa hat for much of the class - yet I did have to take it off towards the end as my head was getting hotter I guess there is a reason why I felt the recent need to shave my head! On the way to pump I noticed Julian Graves are having another one of those 50% sales which make their goods almost affordable. I stopped by to get some pumpkin seeds and also phoned mum to alert her of the sale. After pump I claimed my Quality Street chocolate and at Sainsbury's had a tiny serving (13 grams!) of Bailey's Irish Cream (wow what a waste of calories). I then went to Holland and Barrett - their prices are no good to me but they do have nutritional information on their packs and I realised I'll be needing some for my pumpkin seeds. I then returned to Julian Graves to also buy some raw cashew nuts - whilst there I ran into mum who was carrying dad's new phone so I can set the phone's time, date and adjust the ring volume (my parents are over 60 and proud of their technical incompetence).

A little while later mum came over to deliver some eggs (they were 19p for 6) the shop actually had very many boxes and in similiar situations (e.g. last year) I would have purchased a very large quantity of eggs, as egg whites are the purest of proteins (100% of calories come from protein!) yet eggs don't keep for much more than a week and I try to keep animal protein consumption in check so I plumped for 3 boxes.

Decided to do something about my new Nokia 6080 which unfortunately thinks I'm pressing keys when I clearly am not. Made the call and then did the legwork - a trip to the post office, spent £4.75 on postage (which theoretically I might get back but let's not hold our breath) and the prospect of being without a phone for about a week. I put my SIM in a phone so old that its background image is that of my ex-girlfriend who pre-dates this diary of shame (during which I have evidently remained single). I may have previously mentioned her - the vegeterian that would never eat vegetables (or 'junkatarian' to use Dr Fuhrman's term).

Having got fully caught-up with emails I played with my computer project (located at my 'homepage' - click my name and select 'visit homepage'), one sub-project involved a link from old food days to the relevant CPH page (mind you as I have to post my diary before I can obtain a post number which I can then input into the database this won't necessarily be enabled for the most recent few days). Another sub-project was to get the amount eaten per day onto the main page. [For any fans of SQL, my query joins 4 base tables, uses a sub-query and spans 33 lines the way I'm formatting it. To hide complexity the original version layered the complexity using VIEWs but my free web-host has 'kindly' disabled VIEWs on their MySQL server (Grrr.)]

Some preparation for tomorrow which is a day-trip to London to have a scan at the Nuclear medicine institute. Whilst I've been having high calorie days recently whilst staying at home (allowing myself to dig into the silly amounts of fruits and vegetables which I have accumulated) my time away from home tomorrow can translate into an easy-to-execute low-calorie day - and maybe low-carb too.

Friday

Thursday was a bit of a late night so didn't get too much done on Friday morning before time dictated hurrying to ensure I catch the last train that could get me on time for my hospital appointment (stopping by the glass bottle bank to get rid of 3 large jars which I'm fed up with having around as they keep almost-falling and scaring me).

Railcards generally give a 1/3 discount, so the £12.90 train fare could go down to £8.50, except my particular railcard - the 'Network Railcard' - has a Monday-to-Friday cap of £10. Last time I got confused because the electronic ticket machine does not know this and will sell you the cheaper price - so I queued to buy from a real person (who charged me £10 and said that if I'm caught with an £8.50 ticket it wouldn't be valid). This time I deliberately bought the £8.50 ticket from the electronic machine [which has now been fixed so you can actually select a 'Network Railcard' - I actually had to select a generic 'Railcard' to be offered the cheaper price.] My ticket was examined twice by on-board inspectors, who didn't even want to look at whether I had a railcard, never mind what type it was.

Sitting at reception wondering what a 12pm appointment actually means (unusually, I was seen quite promptly) I clocked a hot drinks machine (branded KLIX) priced at 50p (about $1) per drink. I don't pay this much for drinks but it made me think about the free drinks machine at the Capio hospital (where I had the Endoscopy done a few months back).

My name was called and I was taken to a second waiting area where I was to drink a couple of glasses of water and use the toilets before the nuclear scan. Whilst left alone I noticed this second area had the identical KLIX machine though this time it was configured to dispense drinks for free. No-one said I could use the machine but this virtual victory had me dispensing a vegetable soup (which I was still holding in my hand when the woman looking after me returned). The main scan involved lying on a 'bed' for about 40 minutes whilst being scanned from above. An injection into a vein in my arm was made to attach a small device which was then used to subsequently inject various things into me: the first being some radioactive material, the second (about 15 minutes later) was a diauretic.

One characteristic of my medical condition is that my kidneys are slow to empty into my bladder. Rather predictably this created an unusual problem for these guys: the final scan (to be done standing up rather than lying down) is to confirm that I'm sufficiently non-radioactive to be sent home, but progress had been rather slow. It was suggested I wait a minimum of 30 minutes and present myself again for another scan and I was encouraged to drink as much and use the toilets as much as possible in the meantime.

This is where that free drinks machine got the better of me. I tried the 'Starburst Orange' option (which turned out to be a chilled drink) and the 'Hot Chocolate'. I then went for another soup and another chocolate. Altogether I estimate about 360 calories came from that machine - and I expect to feel a lot more satisfied after consuming that much. The hot chocolates were particularly poor value-for-calorie, though at the time I was consuming them I was just enjoying the fact the drinks were being dispensed for free!

After a succesful re-scan I headed out of the hospital, took the train to Milton Keynes and cycled back home, getting in at 3pm (almost 5 hours after setting off). I was shattered and didn't do much more than rest for the next couple of hours (even had a bit of a nap), before deciding to make OA. It was very cold on the cycle ride there and even colder on the way back, but it was definitely worth the effort: 7 people made the meeting, I got a chance to share about my issues with the faults I perceive with my abstinence and I enjoyed hearing other shares and some post-meeting chat.

After the meeting I made contact with Matthew to establish where he was - a pub opposite Sainsbury's (where I normally go after OA meetings in any event). I drunk 100ml of vodka after finding nothing worth buying at Sainsbury's and just before arriving at the pub [yes, I carried some vodka in a small bottle and a separate plastic measuring jug and this was with me at the OA meeting - funny when you consider that most OA members have also been AA members]. Within 20 minutes of arriving at the pub I served myself another 50ml of vodka (covertly, at the restrooms). This proved to be a mistake as, having not drunk any alcohol since a party in October, my tolerance was rather low and 6 'units' had kept me drunk for hours. At around 10pm I took a short break from Rob and Matthew to 'thaw' myself at the sauna (my gym is in the same complex as the pub) and whilst there caught up with mum who was doing some good shopping for herself and me too at ASDA and TESCO. Shortly afterwards though we were to disperse. Rob was going on to a club (of a style I don't normally go for - too 'alternative' for me) whilst Matthew was waiting for a lift to where he'll be sleeping.Unexpected and inconvenient: I'm drunk and suddenly without a social ocassion to justify it.

Went home and this was convenient for mum who dropped by with her late-night shopping loot but then decided I was too drunk to stay at home and so commited to paying £3 to try out Rob's new club [I've never been to it - this is only the 2nd week since this particular venue has opened]. The music wasn't as offensive as I was afraid, but I wish more people were dancing. I spent about an hour there, leaving just before midnight - recognising that I wanted to have some energy for tomorrow's Christmas-themed morning workout.

At home spent unreasonably long (almost 2 hours) dealing with the shopping, including cooking, portioning and freezing some lean minced beef and chicken breast fillets. Updated my consumption totals (vodka contributed 333 calories!) and as I was rounding off food for the day I had to go a little over my 1400-calorie target in order to hit the 100g-protein target [but I didn't want to re-shoot for 1800 caloreis]. Basically my strategy of keeping calories low and sticking to moderate-carb foods has been succesful in 'dealing with the unknown'. Tomorrow (Saturday) is another unknown quantity where I don't know what to expect, so again I'll be eating conservatively. For Friday, the hospital drinks machine proved to have a bit more impact than the alcohol!

My eat-2-live metrics are really poor: Animals+Rubbish is 64.9% which is about two thirds of my calories, no-where near 10%

Saturday

Isn't it amazing how little things can really bug you out of all proportion? I misplaced the little plastic cover that goes over the USB connection of my mp3 player and half an hour of searching has not recovered it.

I woke up feeling a bit queezy as if any food I would eat might find its way out again but ultimately didn't let this change what I was eating for breakfast (mainly vegetables). Saturday morning workouts are the most popular in our gym and Angela did her best to create a party atmosphere: her husband was in force installing a Christmas tree and other lights around the studio and we worked out in the dark (save for those lights). She burnt the combat tracks (from various releases, including my favourites) onto a CD so she doesn't have to play DJ. I wore a gold-coloured Santa hat, but only until I couldn't bear the heat no longer. The workouts were just fantastic. I walked away with two pieces of chocolate (a coin and a hollow mini Santa). Later on I would also obtain a 2-finger kit-kat bar.

Yesterday somebody mentioned Office Live, implying that Microsoft's free-hosting solution can be a platform one can use to learn developing websites based on ASP/MSSQL, but I wasted a few hours proving to myself that they're wrong and the free package is almost worthless.

In the afternoon I remained overwhelmed by my to-do list and hoped socialising wouldn't steal any more time. Nash came over to deliver a card and a small present (which unfortunately didn't work - it was a hands-free kit for one of my phones but unfortunately it wasn't compatible. well at least the thought was welcome). Then mum came over delivering my post, the replacement phone (which arrived today) and 10.9kg of potatos from the allotment. Finally was sufficiently caught up with tasks that could allow myself the luxuary of reading some CPH forums posts. At around 8pm got an invite to a pub outing but decided not to bother and stay in instead. Foodwise decided to allow myself more than 1400 calories (after having it as my notional aim all day) but not necessarily pushing it all the way to 1800. I'm not sure how this makes me feel: on the one hand it worries me that I aim for X calories and am then prepared to settle for Y calories where Y>X. On the other hand, this is better than feeling "entitled" to consume the full 1800 or 2100 calories.

By the way mum who knew I was drinking yesterday was doing her best to discourage me from drinking a 2nd day in a row.

Thanks Scoobees!

Sunday

Deliberately silenced the phone I use as my alarm to see when I'd naturally get going - this turned out to be 10am. Somebody on the eat2live list mentioned calorierestriction.org (the website of the Calorie Restriciton society) and this proved to be my distraction for most of the day. In the afternoon mum called from Tesco, asking whether I want this or that and I got my delivery just before heading off to the gym. Jason has apparently done his back in and Jo was covering. She was videoing herself (you have to do this from time to time and send to the instructor-licensing body). The turnout was low. This was my last Body Pump until Thursday morning (3.5 days between weight workouts - just about ok). I collected one piece of chocolate.

Somehow spent the entire day catching up with things (including my eating, towards the end of the day decided to catch-up and go for the max, i.e. 2100) and so never started on any other projects!

Monday [Christmas Eve]

I was momentarily up around 6am and contemplated going for the early (6.45am) class, but I did go back to sleep and therefore attended the more reasonably-timed class. Angela had Christmas-decorated the Spin studio, especially flashing lights the teacher's podium. I got there with moments to spare and despite having booked myself a place I was almost in trouble as there was only one bike left. A full house? Well, almost half of all those present were kids as it appears that the gym has broken its own rules and for this class (normally 16 is minimum age) parents were encouraged to bring their kids. Angela distributed Santa hats, antlers and glitter to any who wanted it (especially kids) and we were off. The music mix was mostly a compilation of Christmas songs. I had to take off my golden santa hat when I was sweating. As we were cooling down we were all handed gold medals that we were instructed to wear. In the changing room I removed the red ribbon, unwrapped the 'medal' and ate the milk chocolate coin.

The original plan was to do chores. I did the first bit (visiting Sainsburys, Waitrose, Holland & Barrett (yes, Whey powder sale is starting again) and the market - but for phase 2 (bank, pharmacy and council offices) the plan was to read Eat To Live whilst standing in the queues so I had to go back home as I had forgotten to bring the book. At the council I got mum the privilege to park by my flat for another year, at M&S I grabbed samples: one of a Lemon Torte and one of Tiramisu. At Boots I collected a 3-month supply of medicine. At the bank I enquired about the one-day overdraft I unexpectedly was in 3 weeks ago (remember kids: a cash deposit after 3pm might only get processed the following day!) - and then a kind operative rushed me through the queue so I didn't have to spend a minimum of 30 minutes queueing to deposit some notes.

I was then back home again for a few minutes and then out with Rob and my brother Eran to the pub for a couple of hours (100ml of vodka and a couple of diet cokes, snacks included cashew nuts and coated-peanuts as well as Quality Street chocolates).

At 3.30pm left Eran and Rob in the pub and joined mum on a major food mission. Got nothing at ASDA (except for some samples of candied almonds and cashews) but we both struck gold at Tesco with vegetables and lean protein - we stayed there untill closing time 6pm. By the time I was done unloading the car back home 6.30pm, Eran who has just come out of the pub wondered over to have mum give him a lift back (he's staying with her). The next few hours were spent dealing with my shopping whilst simultaneously catching up with online commitments (and working out the damage done by alcohol and many samples earlier in the day).

I had quite a lot of protein to catch up on and I elected to use animal products for much of that (only making my already-shakey percentages worse). At some point (rather late in the day) decided I didn't need all the calories I already planned and scaled it down from a 2100 to a 1800-calorie day.

I bet that most people eating this kind of day would focus on praising themselves for eating 2.8kg of vegetables, legumes and fruit and sticking with a 1800 calorie limit, rather than being appalled by the % of calories coming from nutrient-deficient rubbish.

Tomorrow is Christmas Day! I'll have a late start (going to bed at 2am) and spend the morning continuing to work with my shopping!

Nir,

As you know, I don't follow your diary. But I believe I read in another post that you were only one pound from goal weight. If I got that right, congratulations!

Either way, you've been an inspiration and help to too many to count.

Merry Christmas,

Thanks Peter (and Merry Christmas to everyone reading!)

Tuesday [Christmas Day]

Got going around 10am. Christmas Dinner is a big unknown so ate defensively (though I had to eat something, because the time at which Christmas dinner is served is also traditionally a big unknown). Otherwise passed the time reading email as well as policing CPH (one spammer managed 32 affiliate adverts for FL4I in the space of 12 minutes - took me about half an hour to rid the forum of their contribution). I also listened to some comedy Christmas specials on the radio (via the internet). Had a chat with Muslim friend Nash who is nevertheless having 9 family members from far and wide gathering for a holiday meal.

I'd like to remember this as the first Christmas Dinner at which I did not over-eat, but for now it is more memorable as the meal I did not eat at the dining table. My soon-to-be 33-years-old brother had started shouting about not wishing to have me weigh my food at the table, his shouts matched by violence such as breaking my measuring cup and throwing my pen and pieces of paper about. I was equally appaled by the silent support he was receiving from my parents/sister who, rather than suggesting he should be the one not to eat at our table, suggested that I keep the peace by setting up a weighing station (on the staircase, a few feet away). In practice as I was weighing and recording over there, I also ended up eating most of the food there too.

This is not the first time that my brother has acted unreasonably in our shared life. In fact it is possible to scroll through this diary and find times when he has stormed out of my flat or otherwise gone mad because he didn't like the shirt I was wearing or the pub we selected. He very much always has to have his way. Have you heard the phrase "forgive and forget"? well it isn't so much that I forgive him, but I tend to be quite forgetfull and so his behaviour does repeatedly catch me off-guard.

I am not the only compulsive-over-eater in my family. I'm the only one who admits they have a problem though. The tradition is to have a half-hour gap after the meal and before the desserts because everyone is uncomfortably stuffed at that point. This year though I didn't have this particular problem, I didn't feel stuffed. I don't know if this is because of the quantities I ate or because my year-around volume-eating has stretched my stomach.

I was encouraged to open my presents from mum. There was a wooden spice-rack with an assortment of 12 jars, a warm winter coat, some shorts for the gym, some sport-style long trousers I might cycle around in, a couple of sport-style long-sleeved tops I might use as light jackets, and a few smart-looking shirts-with-colars.

My dad wanted me to take some (about 1.2kg of) parsnips home with me. He picked them from the allotment. He has had little luck with mum, who doesn't want to put the work in (they are covered in mud!) and he doesn't want to see them wasted [but of course he also doesn't want to put the work in himself]. I shall induldge him on this ocassion, but here at home I am experiencing something of a vegetable crisis. Here is a list of the things I have which are in the room for lack of refrigeration space: broccoli, brussel sprouts, jerusalem artichokes, potatos, onions, carrots, swede, parsnips, apples, bananas. In fact I could fill another fridge with all this produce!

At 6.30pm, having spent a little over an hour on this, I had inputted everything into the computer and had a clear idea of the damage. The meal was about 800 calories and weighed about 800g.

Between 7 and 9pm I was eating again: 548 calories and 1562 grams, the kind of "quantity eating" I'm normally up to when left to my own devices. I napped for a couple of hours before resuming activity after 11pm, this included some radio, some playing around with SQL and some fruit smoothies.

Wednesday [Boxing Day]

Never left the flat, all contact were telephone or internet. I started the day with a small slice of pepperoni pizza.

Enhanced my web-based software to show what food I have in stock next to the date I last consumed it. This computer development resulted in two real-world effects: I scanned the freezer for animal proteins to more accurately record which things I still have and which have ran out. It also highlighted which things I have in stock and haven not touched for ages, encouraging me for instance to eat some butternut squash and a pickled onion.

I don't think that £46 (perhaps $90) is a fair price for 10 days of gym membership, yet if I pay for the gym in February, that's all the use I'll get out of it so I'm probably going to cancel my membership and therefore January 31st would be my last workout at the gym. Then, depending on how my recovery (from operation) is going and advice I shall receive I will restart gym membership in either March or April. Knowing this, I will try to make best use of the gym in the next 5 weeks. This point was brought home by my 2-day enforced absence from the gym: I can't believe it could be 2 months of absence.

If having to come to terms with that is not enough, the realisation that my maintenance calories would be dropping from around 2100 to around 1800 (and that is optimistic!). My unadjusted RMR is calculating as 1408 and I will be forced to be sedentary during this period. I'm already grieving for those calories.

Apart from usefully playing with the computer, I also did a fruit scan, examining all citrus fruit and all apples and dealing with those that required urgent attention (some where beyond help, some were promoted into the freezer). This made room so that the apples and bananas previously in the room are now all refrigereated.

With no outside interference, percentages were finally in happier territory. Not perfect, but that's largely the fault of the morning Pizza.

If having to come to terms with that is not enough, the realisation that my maintenance calories would be dropping from around 2100 to around 1800 (and that is optimistic!). My unadjusted RMR is calculating as 1408 and I will be forced to be sedentary during this period. I'm already grieving for those calories.

On the bright side, you probably will have a really decreased appetite anyway in the first week or so following your surgery...and possibly (hopefully) without the 2 hours intense exercise every day you'll find you have less (physical at least) appetite during your recovery period???  I know you're going to miss your gym attendence though...I know for me I have a couple of "gym friends" that  I really only associate with in the gym - but when I miss a couple of days it's as much about missing that daily little pleasant social aspect  as much as the specific exercise.

so much of my appetite is my will rather than anything physical, though I guess I might be in pain or otherwise shy away from food in the early days.

and other people are an integral part of my workouts. For the last year I have only done group exercise in the studio - I get a lot from the instructor and the other participants.

Thursday

The day started with the structure of a 9.30am pump class (very welcome - last pump was on Sunday). I then made contact with Jon and we established that whilst we're not quite sure how/when he can transport the Whey he bought for me to my hands, it would be simpler if he used that himself and I'll go and buy my own (which I then did).

Around 1pm Rob tried to get me to come out but I resisted and instead stayed at home (catching up with the internet), around 5pm Matthew was also in the picture and I was persuaded. In order to get the positive (have my sister also come out) I had to also invite my brother (see the Christmas day write-up). Two others also showed up. After a couple of hours my brother and sister were taken to mum's gym and the other two girls also went away. I decided to stick with Rob and Matthew as we crawled over to another pub where we stayed till 9pm. For value, compare 5 shots of vodka at 278 calories with just one shot of Baileys (similiar amount of alcohol) for 160 calories, truly a waste of calories. Whilst at the pub I also picked at other people's foods, rangeing from good stuff like green peas to chocolate ice-cream and tortilla chips. I got into a bit of a debate/disagreement with both Rob and Matthew regarding food-weighing, both proposing hypothetical scenarios where food-weighing would not be appropriate. The bottom line is that, for me, there is no circumstance where I'd be ok with not being abstinent, no matter how embarassing or inconvenient this appears to other people, and I think that neither of them have grasped anything about OA/AA, how it works is a foreign concept to them. So I guess there was some friction.

When back at home I was quite low on protein so propped myself up with broccoli and TVP. In fact at that point I was stuffed and needed to lie down.

Woke up in the middle of the night, had my final meal and just as I was about to go back to bed ended up sinking my teeth into a mini "SQL project" whose aim is to rid calories-per-hour of a large number of fake users who register for the forum for less than honest reasons.

Percentages would have been ETL-compliant if it wasn't for that big alcohol elephant. I don't think alcohol is going to feature for many more days so I don't think it is an issue for me.

Hi Nir!! :grin::grin::grin::grin:

Happy Holidays! Just dropped by to say hello.

Its been tough, but I have tried to keep up with your diary-just read the last few pages and wanted you to know I am still around. Cool to see all that you're up to! I like reading about your new recipes for fruit smoothies and new concoctions that you always seem to come up with! Also...wanted to comment on Christmas dinner. I am sorry you had to eat on the stairs. That is NOT FAIR to you and your family could've been a little more supportive of you rather than your spoiled brother who must have his own way or resorts to violence by breaking your measuring cups or scales that clearly mean something to YOU. Wow. I am sorry to hear it went down like that Nir. :nono: It is disrespectful to say the least and very sad. What effect was it having on him for you to "do your thing" to stay healthy and on track during a very tough time of year? I am happy you didnt cave in and you stuck to your guns and did what you had to do to stay on track! Alot of people wouldn't have been able to do the same. You should be proud!

:shooting_star:Plus, I heard somewhere that you are only a single pound from goal!!??!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! So cool!:shooting_star:

Anyway...I just wanted to say hi and let you know that I dont think any of us on CPH (well, not the "regulars" anyway) would ever judge you or break your things if we all had dinner together! What a fun concept though? Can you imagine how much fun that would be? All of us, with our quirks and habits and routines...what a good idea! :yum:

I wish the very best for you in 2008 Nir!! Happy New Year!!!!

I'm not sure if I am one pound away from goal or not - it is difficult to say, but then, it is difficult to say whether I need to reach a body fat of 10% or whether I am lean enough at 11%. I'm reasonably happy where I am though. I might challenge myself to doing some more low-calorie days when school starts again in January but for now I'm happy to eat more calories (no more than maintenance though).

How did my altercation with my brother make me feel? It made me feel determined to do what I do at all costs. After all, I know that my problem is that I have previously used any excuse (such as being upset) to over-eat, the point of recovery is that no experience, however upsetting, is not going to be made worse by binge-eating, so I do what I do no matter what - and along the way I discover who my friends are.

Thanks for dropping by - and a Happy New Year to you too!

Friday

It felt quite 'real' as I was filling in the cancellation form at the gym - just 5 weeks to go! I enjoyed body step (l0oks like instructor Jo wants to be a combat instructor, too).

Spent a few hours at home and then called out by Rob and Matthew who where at Lloyds, heading out there around 2.30pm. My brother also joined (initially a few years ago I was the one to socialise him into my group of friends - now whilst they still expect me to arrange things they want his company too, or I would have had more opportunity to snub him). What I did do was snub his offers of drink and food, though this is largely due to loving my body and recognising that there is nothing healthy on that menu [well except for the salad, which I thought was rather poor the last time I tried it. Actually there was a bit of talk of the tomato soup, I guess that might have been ok (I wonder what is in it!). The original idea was to ride the social ocassion and follow on to OA. The alcohol I drunk (4 shots) wasn't enough to make me feel tipsy and yet I was tired (possibly alcohol, possibly not much sleep) and around 4pm I went home, feeling sufficiently tired and stressed to excuse myself from OA and stay in for the rest of the evening.

At around 6.30pm mum came and delivered some shopping she found that she was willing to share with me, remarkably including peppers. I then spent many hours catching up with internet things. Both in the morning (before step), at lunch and in the evening I also continued playing with SQL to combat the new threat that spammers are posing to CPH. It truly felt that I was achieving nothing more than playing catch-up with my email list duties, though. Oh, a couple of times during the day I was in touch with Nash to remind him that he commited a while back to attend an early Saturday morning workout with me at the gym and discuss how his plans for a late Friday night of salsa were going to fit in with this.

Saturday

Woke up and couldn't get hold of Nash so resigned to going on my own. He called while I was assembling breakfast though - he'd make it but later than planned. He parked nearby and we walked to the gym through the shopping centre (I was finishing my breakfast whilst walking). At the gym's reception desk they were trying to make a £10 charge, suggesting that guest passes are only valid for 6 months but finally made a goodwill gesture and let us through. I usually shower before the workout on a Saturday morning but due to Nash's lateness and the delay at reception there was no time - but I did have time to guide him through the body combat basic moves before the class started (and he does kickboxing so he was familiar with the basic moves). I told Angela that he was new and she did focus teaching points on him. He did ok for someone new to combat. Pump was a different story: talk about wanting to use heavier weights whilst having no clue about posture - both myself and Angela were 'on his case' throughout the class (for example I abandoned my bar during the lunge track just so I could convince him to also do so and focus on actually doing the exercise which (surprisingly enough) involves up-and-down movement of the back knee: no use standing there with a bar and not moving... anyhow the workouts were great and I'm really focused on enjoying, with my forthcoming break in the gym attendance looming.

As I was with Nash, we then dipped into the pool - only my 3rd swim during the 11 months I've been at this gym. I don't consider myself a fast swimmer, but based on swimming alongside him, clearly he isn't either. Also tried the Jaccusi and the steam-room (and the sauna - always my favourite) before showering and walking home (grabbing samples: a piece of cheese and a bit of muffin, at Waitorse).

Mum made contact, telling me she was sending dad to me: with a gift of 1.6kg clementines, a rare chance to pet my sister's dog Penny who is on a visit from Wolverhampton, and some shopping she was kindly selling on. The rest of the afternoon is a bit of a haze really. Computer things and what not. Percentages now tending back towards normal. One useful move was to take all potatos out of the fridge and refrigerate all my peppers and clementines. Currently unrefrigerated: potatos, jerusalem artichokes, onions, carrots (kiwi fruit deliberately so as I'm trying to ripen them!).

Although maintenance dropping to 1800 is in February, I'm trying to get myself used to that by not having long stretches of 2100 so I have now strung a long a few days at 1800. I guess that amounts to a conservative deficit at present, no harm in that. I should consider myself lucky, for some on the forums, 1800 is above-maintenance!

Hey Nir--just realized I hadn't dropped by to say hello in ages *visualize very apologetic face* :crying: I'm horrible, I know.

I just wanted to make sure you know how much I appreciate all you do as a moderator/administrator/fitness expert. You have so much knowledge, and you share it with everyone...you have probably explained RMR and other relevant details over a million times.

Always remember that we appreciate it.

Hi CG, thanks. I love the community we've created here.

Sunday

I get up several times every night. When I got up around 7.30am I planned to go back to sleep but my friend Dean had other plans - he asked for advice about his rights when returning some unwanted presents to the store, and whether a broadband deal that involves a 'free' Dell laptop was actually worth the extra cost of the broadband subscription. Eventually conversation fizzled out as his son was taking more and more of his attention.

I re-visited all my leafy vegetables [romaine, iceberg, chicory and cabbage] and breakfast was low in calories - so I balanced it with a slice of pizza. Did computer things and continued eating till 2pm when Matthew invited me to the pub. I was there till 5pm - Rob showed up, as did my sister (I have two: this is not the one that was in town a few days ago) with her boyfriend. I headed off directly to the gym [actually I went back home very briefly to get a couple of water bottles] and enjoyed my Step and Pump workouts. By the time I was eating again it was exactly 6 hours since I ate last, with lots of calories to catch-up on.

Tomorrow is New Year's Eve and for the first time in years I am not planning to celebrate it in any way. Last year was a party at my sister's then-new-house in Wolverhampton, the previous two years I was going out in London. This year I was invited to London but passed, I was also considering a house party but these are Salsa people and I'm not particularly connected with that at the moment. I don't feel it will be an issue.

I think I managed to crash the CPH forums - arghhh. Luckly it started working again an hour or so later.
