Monday
Makes no sense to have a high-day tomorrow as I won't be able to eat until after my operation, so having one today. Really enjoying those fruits (for example 1.1kg of frozen pineapple) and those pistachio nuts. Skipped AM workout and wasn't in the mood to do the PM workout either, but knowing that I won't be able to work out for a while after my op so made myself go anyway. It'll be a good idea to have an ealy night - so will I follow through? Either way, the next time I post here will be after my op.

Hey Nir!!
Good luck with your surgery. I've always thought that stressing out beforehand was one of the worst parts, and it sounds like you are pretty cool about it. So thats good.
Take it easy, and take care!

Thank you Scoobees, FLT and clarinetgurl!
Tuesday
short version: I made it.
long version:
Up from around 6am, met mum around 7.20am and in hospital by 7.40am. By 9am I was allocated a bay, changed, read the 'welcome to hospital' booklet, met my anaesthetist and my consultant surgent and had a call from my sister to wish me luck. I was told I'd be starting between 10.30am and 11am so I was pacing the corridors wondering what was going on until it was finally my turn at 11.45am. There was a problem with the nearby Theatre so they were wheeling everyone through 1/2 a mile of corridors to a working Theatre elsewhere in the hospital. So much for being in the 'new' extension to the hospital, then.
The plan was for mum to camp at my place overnight, to satisfy the requirement for an adult to stay with me for 24 hours. However this is inconvenient for both of us so we both changed our minds and decided to keep regular phone contact [naughty!]. So neither of us will be getting any rest tonight (no change there, then) but at least we can enjoy the comfort of our respective homes!
I woke up, clearing up my first anxiety (of going to 'sleep' and never waking up). I was probably 'under' from 12pm till about 1.20pm. My last recollection was putting an oxygen mask on, in the anaesthetist's room and my first recollection was waking up back in my bay (surrounded by nursing staff). I was fitted with a 'semi-permanent' catheter which was the kind with a bag to collect liquid (pink on account of the mixture of urine and blood) and had a surprisingly thick tube (much thicker than the ones I've been shown how to use at home). For the next few hours I was drousy. At 3.20pm I made my food choice. Choice was between toast and cereal. I assumed wholegrain toast was unlikely so I selected cereal, where WheatBix was one of the 3 options (the other two where non-wholegrain options, corn-flakes and rice-crispies). The WheatBix was served with semi-skimmed milk. I was able to weigh and therefore count my foods. I would later also eat foods from my own stash: pig-kidney, chineese-leaf-lettuce, TVP(unhydrated) and peanuts - and ask the nursing staff to make me a few white coffees (adding my own artificial sweetner).
Animal products percentage is somewhat disappointing / alarming. I'm very nearly finished with the frozen milk though, at long last. If I'm up to eating the quantities involved, I shall have a high day tomorrow.

Yay Nir's back!!!!! And posting already!
Excellent to hear you made it through! That is one of my own personal anxieties - the 'not waking up after being put to sleep' thing. Scary. I've not had to go thru that yet, thankfully, but it gives me the chills just thinking about it.

Thanks voodoodoll and FLT.
ClarinetGurl, I took the easy route, I guess I'll exercise tomorrow. I did feel a sore throat yesterday but luckily that's gone by now.
Scoobees, I did read that the risk was something like 5 in 1,000,000 leading to death, but that didn't stop me being nervous.
TrimB, a mixture of weakness, laziness, burning whilst peeing but otherwise ok.
Wednesday
A day of "justified laziness". At midday I made the 'executive' decision to skip counselling due to the cycle ride required. So I stayed in all day - resting, eating and reading. At lunch I heard from my sister (the one I was visiting back in February).
I know Avocado isn't a nut, but I'm sure you see my logic here: like nuts, its calories primarily come from fats. Healthy fats. [Tomorrow should be a low day.]

Thanks Waterthrush.
Thursday
Decided to resume exercise and so dragged myself to Body Pump in the morning. Spent ages in the morning failing to find my 'Milton Keynes College' water bottle, which I last saw after my workout on Monday. I have probably left it in the gym's changing room.
I asked a member of the gym's staff if there was a water bottle in the "lost and found" and they replied that they throw away all water bottles for reasons of "health and safety". I think it is more likely to be the gym hoping to sell me water bottle advertising themselves at a cost of £3. No such chance - I shall instead be advertising another gym by using one of my many previous water bottles. Ok, it is a hollow victory, I wish I had my water bottle back. It is funny how we can have emotional attachments to random bits of plastic!
Thursday was a day of shopping.
Asked for a kilo of tomatos at the market. This is another one of those confrontations: In the UK you should officially be able to buy in metric yet in the outdoor market prices are only displayed in imperial. The price was "3lb for £1" which should be 73.4p for a kilo. I was charged 75p and actually got 965g (which was therefore only worth 70.9p). So I paid 4p or 6% over the odds. (ok, big deal it isn't.)
Yesterday asked mum to take me vegetable shopping at LIDL but after her own teeth-related visit to bedford hospital she wasn't in the mood. Instead she offered Thursday, and that's what we did. I spent £2.69 at LIDL and 21p at NETTO and was dropped back home after about 1.5 hours of shopping. At LIDL I noticed half a chocolate bar on the floor. Yes, I picked it up and later on (after paying for my items but before mum was through her checkout) I brushed it, weighed it and ate it! I spent the afternoon using the microwave for non-stop vegetable cooking (isn't this how I broke the previous microwave?) and already decided to pardon myself the afternoon gym visit, so when mum called to offer me a trip to ASDA I was in a position to accept.
We headed towards ASDA at 6pm and I got back shortly before 10pm. During this time we visited ASDA, stopped at IKEA for some samples and 4 coffees and then had another look at ASDA. I spent £8.69 the first time and nothing the second, but mum got more on her 2nd visit than her 1st. I do like spending time with mum (despite being 34), and as we don't live together we see each other for joint food shopping than anything else. As we were both compulsively heading towards the IKEA samples area mum said "I hope they don't have any samples" before she, like me, methodically walking every isle in search of samples - draw your own conclusions! I took the last cookie and she seeed happy there was nothing for her - and then she spotted an open pack of mini-Dime-bars. This was not a sample but evidently people have been helping themselves. She helped herself to a couple (and then so did I, but I probably wouldn't have if she wasn't there). I only had half of the cookie with my coffees (and even then it was 58 calories) but mum didn't want the other half so I left it on the table). So what did I buy at ASDA? Over half my spend was on ready-meals: 8 (count them!) pizzas and a curry. Most of the rest are cooked deli meats and sea-food. Vegetables and fruit are barely represented. Every item was a price reduction but unfortunately it was not a good day for produce. Conversely I've been thinking about pizza since going to that restaurant on Saturday. I've been looking at pizzas at LIDL and NETTO earlier in the day but refusing to purchase them at full price. Now I was buying one of each unique price-reduced pizza I was able to (yes, there were 8 different varieties - I could have purchased more pizza but it would have been duplicates). Pizza's main ingredients (white flour and cheese) have nutrient densities 2 and 3. I'm spending much of my productive time reading backlogs of diseaseproof.com and yet this is how I chose to spend my money!
I was finally in bed by 4.30am. Yes, it took over 6 hours to sort out the shopping. Part of it (over 2 hours) was dealing with 800g of prawns-in-their-shells. I'm NEVER buying those again, I've burnt more calories peeling those than I'd ever spend eating them! I religiously carved up all available meat and seafood into 50-calorie portions for freezing (eating the un-whole portions). I guess this is my punishment for buying animal protein. The pizzas I just quartered (the challenge being to stuff them into an already over-stuffed freezer).
Other points of interest: made tomato ice-cream a couple of times, but with Whey powder (as I'm finally out of milk again) and using tinned tomatos (open tin, put in tupperware box and freeze first). This currently works out cheaper than fresh tomatos and results are acceptable.
My current OA abstinence started the week after I was back from a trip to my sister in Wolverhapton. Said sister invited me to her 29th birthday party (involving alcohol and a BBQ). I've said yes and booked my tickets, so I guess I now just have to worry about keeping my abstinence. Her house has been the scene for previous binges. This time MUST be different. I am determined.
Only the other day I was pondering the way I review TrimB's food list, mentally assigning Dr Fuhrman's nutrient density numbers to her various foods and often meaning but never quite managing to make the obvious comment about them. [more vegetables and less grain and other rubbish is the only way to drill those calorie numbers down!] And now, with my collection of 8 pizzas (let's say up to 8000 calories) I am unlikely to be doing well percentage-wise for the foreseeable future. Ahem.

Friday
As you can expect, making a 10.30am Body Step class is more of a challenge if your bedtime is 4.30am. Nevertheless I made it, though perhaps I was a bit tired during the day. 3 weeks on I showed up at OA - this was as big a meeting as they get, with 17 people. A special meeting, marking N's first birthday and F's 6th birthday. Instead of reading a book we had a short speech from N. There were about 3 newbies present too. After the meeting I had an 'amends' from one of the two people who upset me 3 weeks ago (who I was happy to forgive).
On my way home I stopped at my parents' to print-off an email permitting me to take my bicycle on the train to Wolverhampton. Dad offered a piece of chocolate. He also proposed a trip to the allotment to pick the last of the broad beans. This certainly killed well over an hour!
8 slices of pizza : er, that means I ate 2 whole pizzas today. Rather puts last Saturday into some sort of perspective, doesn't it? I think I could have done with a few more vegetables in there, seriously. [going back a few years, I used to have a pizza for breakfast, a pizza for dinner, and nothing in between. Have I actually made any progress, then?]

Hello Nir! Are you feeling better after your surgery? I am always very impressed with how much thought you put into your food and exercise.
And to stick my nose in your business, yes you are better off now (in answer to your question of yourself) You are a different person now. You are educated and you know this living off of pizza is only temporary. Sometimes it is worth it to buy healthy, fresh produce even if it's not on sale. If you have the money that is. After all, you are worth it! Think of it as investing in your future.
By the way, I highly respect how you deligently pursue your goals and help others.

Hi Sas!. I'm not feeling weak or dizzy, but it is 4 days after surgery and it is still a nightmare to pee, reminding me of a similiar procedure done to me in 2004 (under local anaethetic) which had me suffering for 3 weeks. I hope I heal quicker this time around, I really do.
By the way very much respect the readiness with which you have embraced the Eat To Live healthy eating concepts.
In September/October 2005 I was briefly going out with my ballroom dancing partner [Neither the dancing nor the relationship lasted] and she lent me a book called 'optimum nutrition' which first introduced me to concepts such as animal proteins causing acidity and loss of calcium. Then in January/February 2006 I was reading the cancer survivor's handbook (it is a free online PDF book snipurl.com/cancerETL ). In February 2006 I took Eat To Live out of the library but it was only June I was finally reading it! Meanwhile you've jumped from junk food to healthy eating in a matter of days.
Actually since I first re-started my healthy eating and fat loss efforts in 2004 I've been looking for a supportive environment when I could "talk shop". In my real life I was always surrounded by people who really didn't want to hear a word about weight-loss
I guess the main difference is that back in those days I didn't question the idea of eating an entire pizza for a meal as unhealthy. Health (or weight) were just not a concern. I was delighted by taste and probably also by the low cost. Of course a lot has changed.
(and thanks for your compliments)

Actually Nir, after looking at all those tantalizing slices of pizza in your post, I asked my husband to bring some home for dinner. So my progress of changing my ways is not as radical as I would like you to think! My refrigerator is full of fresh veggies and fruits though, and I am no longer purchasing cookies, chips and snack cakes. It is definately harder when you weren't raised to eat healthy or mindfully.
I really sympathize with you as far as your symptoms go. I have had urinary tract infections that seemed murderous. It is terrible when you dread having to go to the bathroom because you know there will be pain. It's bad when the neighbors know how many times you've gone to the bathroom that day because of how many times they have heard you scream. Did they give you anything to help with that pain? It'll get better. Sometimes you need to repeat that to yourself to make it through the day, but it actually does get better. I hope your surgery wasn't due to something serious. I am sorry if I am terribly nosey. I have been praying for you and I will continue. I may look into those other books you mentioned, although at the moment life seems so busy!
Have a peaceful weekend!

I'm almost done with the antibiotics. I've been told to stick with Paracetamol if I need the pain-relief, but I've chosen to go without.
Saturday
I had a slice of pizza and headed for the gym. This morning we had the brand-new choreography at Body Combat, which I was hopeless with. As time goes by I usually do better than most at remembering choreography, but following brand-new stuff is a different matter! Angela (our instructor) also provided a large box of chocolates. I took a fun-size Mars bar after combat, and a mini-bag of chocolate buttons after pump. (I weighed and ate them in the changing rooms, so I had the uneaten Mars bar near my mat for a good hour.) I was disappointed that Shey was not team-teaching the new combat, because I thought that was the plan (this would have been a break for her as she's new to combat). After the gym I passed Waitrose to look for samples and sure enough there was Skinny Cow again (though this time a smaller amount - just a teaspoon rather than a small block).
It was such a sunny day I resolved to be outside. I took my mobile phone (which had MP3 files I wanted to listen to) and one of the two bags of broad beans I harvested yesterday, which needed shelling. So there I was, in the public gardens near our indoor shopping centre, enjoying the sun and being useful. Then it got windy and I walked around, collecting some samples (a piece of doughnut and some walknuts and cashews). Nash showed up at one point as well. I went home when I was finally done with the broad beans and had a nap. After 7pm I had my 2nd slice of pizza . Although I realised I could 'fit' another slice of pizza I decided to round the day with more vegetables instead. I'm happier about percentages today.

Re-feed plan: since last Friday (i.e. for 9 days) I've been following the alternating low-day/high-day pattern (2150,1550) i.e. average of 1850. What next? Either a high-high-low pattern (2150,2150,1550) which averages 1950, or just some high days (2150). I guess I can 2 high days and then decide which one to do!

Sunday
I had an early start but the thought better of it and went back to bed. After jam I learnt of the commitments which meant Shey was absent from the combat launch yesterday. I got a cucumber at Sainsbury's. Later I had a look at 'MK4U' - an outdoor festival thing in the park. I liked it better than the event in the same location a couple of weeks ago. For a start, the weather was nicer . Not only were there several bands, but there was also a science tent [this is a travelling event: cambridge uni science students are trying to popularise science. as a 34 year old, the typical student [18-22] seems so much younger than my internal memory of what students were like back when I was a student. There was a percussion tent with a drum in front of every chair in the circle and I really enjoyed the 10 or so minutes I spent there. Overall I was there for 90 minutes before heading home. I was back home briefly before reluctantely heading out to the gym again (but as ever I was glad I did). I tried to do something fancy to the Body Step 'party track' and Jason the instructor said something like "hey, I'm the star here". He is the unmistakable diva. Speaking of acting like a diva, it turns out my much-loved water bottle was simply misplaced in my kitchen. So much for the resentment I felt towards my gym's lost-and-found policy.
That's 13 slices of pizza (unlucky for some), or just over 3 pizzas. On the bright side, the more I get through the less are left. Looking at the variable number of calories per slice, the explanation is that at times I'm gettig bored with the slices and only eat some of them (so I give myself a discount for the bit I'm discarding).

Hey Nir,
Just dropping in to say hi. I'm glad you found your water bottle Sounds like you're recovering pretty well. There's no way I'd be exercising again this soon after a surgery...that would just be such a good excuse Your dedication continues to amaze me (even with eating just over three pizzas)
Hope you are having a great day!

Thanks clarinetgurl.
I'm just at the stage when I don't know if I've finished my antibiotics and can't decde whether I have an unresolved infection or whether it is just regular 'pain' that will heal over time.
pizza update on Monday morning: I originally bought 8 pizzas, making 32 slices ( ). So far today I've had 3 slices and looking at the freezer, there are just 5 slices remaining .
So it looks like I'll be back to regular, sane food by the end of the day. In fact I just asked mum if she wants to take me vegetable shopping.
So, while some foods, like peanuts and raisins which used to feature in my binge-eating are safe for me to have lying around without me wanting to eat every last bit (whether as part of a binge or as part of a more structured calorie-counting regiment), I think we can conclude that pizza is still one of those insane foods (like sweets and chocolate and 'real' ice-cream) that I have no business keeping at home - at least not more than I intend to eat on the day of purchase. So next time I see reduced-price pizza I should probably just buy one.

Monday
I intended to do Body Jam in the evening as Shey was covering for Jackie, and didn't want to do jam twice in one day so it was either staying at home or doing a spin class for the AM - I went with the easy option of staying home. Upon realising that my 5-day "pizza phase" was necessarily coming to an end I encouraged mum to take me shopping (although in the event there was no broccoli). I stocked up on vegetables at LIDL and mum passed on some mail (including the train tickets I ordered for my trip to Wolverhampton in a couple of weeks, and an hospital-arranged appointment to see a dietitian - mid August). I've never met a Dietitian before so I don't want to squander the opportunity. I shall have to think of good questions. Part of me thinks I might know more than them, but this certainly won't be the case in the sphere of specific micronutrients and what they're for. I certainly intend to ask them about protein intake levels but if they come back with RDA figures I won't be taking them seriously.
For the afternoon I was swapping my regular BOSU-and-BodyStep routine for BodyJam-and-BodyStep. To avoid feeling short-changed I decided to also turn up for the earlier Core class. This class used to be taken by the competent Hazel, but now they've inexplicably taken all her classes away from her and given Mark, a new employee, a brake. Mark is a gym-area fitness instructor. Unlike Hazel, I don't think I've spotted him wearing the Personal Trainer colours at any point. The experience seemed like his first ever taught class. It did not appear as though he has been through the course I had passed. [1] Warm-up was litereally jumping up and down on the spot for 5 minutes, unusual and unpleasant [2] directional queues were not 'mirrored' - so when he told us 'jump to the left' he was jumping to the right (his left) which was confusing [3] exercises for both sides of the body were uneven with less time spent on the second time [4] class was aborted because 6pm crept up and people had to go to their next class etc. so there was no time for a cool down. In fact there wasn't even any time for me to deliver Mark some feedback [which may be a blessing in disguise - would he appreciate it?]. Body Jam was surprisingly 'effective' and I briefly thought about giving Body Step a miss and heading straight home (but I didn't). Afterwards I returned mum's call - she was nearby and has bought me some reduced-price lamb liver so I crossed over to Sainsbury's to take this off her hands and have a chat.
I had 8 pizza slices at the following times: 5.50am 6.05am 9.35am 10.45am 11.50am 2.40pm 10.30pm 11.20pm. That's it - no more pizza!
I think I will go for another high day tomorrow (3rd in a row).

Tuesday
I started the day thinking "a 3rd high day" but with 393 calories under my belt (consumed between 10am and 10.40am: a bit of a lazy start to the day) I changed my mind and decided to have a "low day". So that meant pacing myself on calories and eating some higher-protein foods to redress the balance. I was skipping the morning pump as I was planning to do the afternoon one. At noon I had the option to fit another class but I wasn't in the mood.
The highlight of the day was seeing Jon who used to be my workout buddy at my previous gym. I used one of my Guest Passes to let him sample my new club, including the Body Pump class - we spent almost 3 hours together. It wasn't possible for me to stop smiling during the class. Later things turned a little somber as he relayed some unhappy personal stuff.
Now that I'm not allocating every spare calorie towards frozen pizza, I appear to have plenty of calories available for fruits and fruit-based smoothies. Today I tried using Tofu as a smoothie ingredient (pineapple + tofu + banana-flavour-whey-powder) and also had a basic 'tomato sorbet' (a tin of peeled tomatos, frozen, crushed in the food processor with some artificial sweetners).
My ETL compliance percentage is looking very nice again. It was a shame to hear that Sassykat has given up on Eat To Live.
My diary's page-view counter topped 50,000 today. Thanks to my readers (mostly lurkers, I must conclude). I am hopeful that tomorrow I'll finally get my hands on the MP3 player I ordered last month!

Wednesday
Up early to ensure I met the postman to (finally!) take delivery of my first ever MP3 player (which is more complicated than I expected. I'll have to schedule some time in the near future to get to know it better - in the meantime I prefer to continue using the mobile phone's MP3 function where a play-list function helps me to string small audio files in a predtermined order). I found the step class energising. Got some discounted mushrooms immediately afterwards.
In theory then had plenty of time (2.5 hours) until my next 'hard' fixture, my counselling appointment, but I felt rushed and hassled. I ate, tried to rest, then cycled over to LIDL where once more they were out of Broccoli. Counselling felt 'non-stop' and my time was up before I knew it. I have a session next week then no more till September (due to break in the school year). Stopped at M&S on my way home and was "rewarded" (if you want to call it that) by a 'DIY dessert' consisting of (A) a piece of meringue shell (B) a dollop of clotted cream (C) a strawberry. To realise how unhealthy you should have seen the size of the clotted cream blob (which is 585 calories per 100g!) I wish I had not had it . Finally got some rest. Nash called and I found myself irritated at him. He had a booklet in his hands and I wanted some basic information deduced from it (cost of academic courses advertised in booklet to someone in my financial situation) - he seemed to be scoring low on comprehension skills. Then we moved on to comparing the figures £67 (full price) and £50 (with a discount) and I asked him to establish the discount as a percentage. He didn't know where to begin. This continued to frustrate me as his education is to college level. Clearly he has decided that 'thinking' is not cool past the age of 25. Don't get me wrong, if I know that someone has difficulty reading/writing or with maths, I wouldn't be expecting much of them, but Nash is just lazy - and when he is this lazy, I wish he was too lazy to call me.
Still felt tired though and wanted to stay home - but went to the gym anyway and had a fun combat class (aleady slightly less confusing than Saturday) but I felt tired and didn't push myself too much. Trips to Sainsbury either size of my workout got me some broccoli and a pig kidney beforehand and 8 cucumbers afterwards. Though I did spot my ex-girlfriend from mid-2005 (which was unnerving as I almost didn't recognise her). She was the vegeterian-that-hardly-ever-ate-any-vegetables, mainly eating processed foods, paying much attention to "suitable for vegeterian" labels on processed foods (which was amusing on clearly-vegeterian foods that did not happen to have that symbol on them). [We have employed the "completely ignoring each other" social protocol since splitting 2 years ago...]
My last meal of the day featured broad beans and bananas. It wasn't long ago that I couldn't trust myself around bananas, but as with peanuts I'm OK with them, they can stay hidden in the freezer and it isn't an issue. Unlike pizza.

Thursday
Distrubed sleep. Got up "in time" but took too long to prepare and eat my breakfast (frozen apples - slightly defrosted; broad beans - cooked, processed into a 'powder' with food processor, artificially sweetened and mixed with cocoa powder). Was 5 minutes late to Body Pump - only time for the bicep curls (i.e. last) part of the warm-up track once my bar was hastely assembled. Enjoyed class (is it possible that the warm-up robs me of energy? surely not, as the bar only weighs 10kg). On way home picked samples at Waitrose and my own copy of the ACE (adult continuing education) booklet from the central library on my way home [see yesterday]. Ate elaborate large quantities of salad and then caught up with calories using peanuts/walnuts. Then ate forward-calories with a simple pinto-beans-and-curry-powder dish. Had a nap.
Looking back, I got into a habit of having a non-stop audio track to my life, the spoken word of things I would have otherwise read, combined with radio broadcasts (e.g. comedy programs). However today is the second day where I'm enjoying the calmness of some silence! Ironic that this phase seems to have started just when my new MP3 player arrives.
Was planning to only do 30 minutes of Step (but no other classes) so when mum offered a shopping trip to ASDA I decided skipping the gym was the sensible choice. When I picked up a couple of pizzas , mum [recognising the significance of this] threatened to leave me stranded there. I knew she was bluffing, though, so it had no impact on my actions. Everything else was fruit and veg. I also had 4 complimentary coffees at IKEA (next door). Rather than get dropped off home we went on to the allotment where I spent a while picking cooking-cherries (these are sour) and goosberries (these have thorns - I had to wear gloves for protection!). Once I finally got home (outing was at least 3.5 hours) there was plenty of processing to do. Cherries to pit, removal of stem-ends of goosberries, de-stoning peaches etc. Highlight of my eating were the sour cherries: pitted, frozen (briefly) and then mixed with artificial sweetner and banana-flavour-whey-powder, they made for a delcious 'mousse'. Yes, pizza also featured.
My next priority should be to select courses of interest, but I'm "not playing ball with myself". Well, seems that way most of the time.

Friday
Step class followed by a mostly lazy day. Took washing to mum's house before/after OA (had one of dad's lemon wafers). OA meeting started with just 3 people (contrast last week 17) but late arrivals made it up to 7.
Foodwise it was balancing pizza with high-protein-vegetables for most of the day (on a low-calorie day!). Once more, it was a relief to be out of pizza. Please let me learn some lesson from this. Highlight was the mousse I made with 597g frozen peaches and 6g of banana-flavour-whey-powder. Who would have thought such a little bit of powder can make such a big difference? That has pretty much made my mind up for me, I will be buying more Whey Protein powder when this tub is gone (well, the product next goes on sale, anyhow). Yes, it is low-fat dairy [nutrient density score 13] but it is such a culinary winner. Two high-calorie days now coming up. I want to learn to use Google Spreadsheets

Saturday
Got up at 4am and couldn't fall back to sleep. Spent some time considering what courses to take next year. I could do some computer courses. I did A-level computer sciece in 1989-1991 so I wonder how courses at that level got updated over the last 16 years. Or I could do more in the fitness-instruction sphere. To be honest, nothing is grabbing me as something that I don't know and would like to learn. There's plenty I don't know, but that doesn't mean I gravitate towards it. I'll have to give this more thought. I definitely want to be on some sort of course though. It passes the time and I like being a student (again).
Workouts were fantastic. Instructor was asking "are you smiling or grimacing" and correctly guessed it was a bit of both. Well she did ask during the second half of the squats track. I was impressed with the large amount of pineapple I got for my money but so much of it was brown. I need to be able to tell pineapple that has gone off.
Things are not great on the medical front. 11 days after my hospital procedure and things are still unusual and unpleasant. At least my appointment letter arrived today - I'm being seen by the consultant at the end of August.
Why has my weight been trending upwards, when I'm not even eating 'maintenance calories'? My current theory is that some of my previous 'loss' was glycogen depletion, which has now been 'reversed'. A full gylcogen store can weigh around 2.0kg, after all. Whilst protein (19.3%) and fat (? 17% ?) are represented in my intake, my carb intake is on the high side (perhaps 63% today). Well, it is a theory, anyway. Saturday in Wolverhampton will be a high day. Friday (and maybe Thursday) will be low day(s). So the following few days (at least Sunday .. Wednesday) will now be high days.
I have some fruit (peach, pineapple, apple) that I'd love to store in the freezer, but it is too full at the moment.

Sunday
Itchy all-over red rash in the morning after eating frozen cerries with whey powder and a wafer cone. Whey powder is once more in the frame. This allergy reaction is so unpredictable! Discussed this with mum throghout the day - she wondered whether contamination of the allergy agent is going to make it even harder to figure out what it is I'm allergic to.
Discussed my course selection dilema with Nash. Am I looking for a social situation? Knowledge? Achievement? Structure? A pass-time? If I enrolled in a course which required my presence 5 days a week, surely I'd feel resentful? - I do like my freedom. The 4 contenders at the moment are: something sporty, something IT, something engineering or some random academic courses (perhaps psychology or chemistry). I am aware that this is the kind of issue that a retired person would be facing.
I enjoyed my jam class on one level, and then dreaded/enjoyed my more serious workouts too. I feel relief after managing the squat/chest/back combo in pump - getting to the stretch track is magic, wheras warm-up is the time to feel "I'm not looking forward to this". Without the structure of a class, will I really tackle weight-training again?
My attitude towards catheters has changed. To begin with I was told to use these 4 times a day and was barely managing once, but they are proving more useful and less uncomfortable to use.
As far as shopping goes, I forgot to add up for a couple of weeks:
July 2nd .. 8th: 0 + 0 + 0 + 12.34 + 1.51 + 0 + 0.15 = £14.00
July 9th .. 15th: 4.66 + 6.44 + 2.25 + 4.70 + 0.20 + 2.00 + 0 = £20.25
Foodwise I certainly enjoyed my frozen fruit today. I also had tasty home-made humous madefrom tinned chick-peas (two tins - once in the morning and once at night) and spice mix. Finished all my calories by 10.15pm - that's quite early for me. I guess an early night is on the cards.

Nir wrote: 8 slices of pizza : er, that means I ate 2 whole pizzas today. Rather puts last Saturday into some sort of perspective, doesn't it? I think I could have done with a few more vegetables in there, seriously. [going back a few years, I used to have a pizza for breakfast, a pizza for dinner, and nothing in between. Have I actually made any progress, then?]
Sure, that's progress!
Hey, if you're going to eat that much pizza I think I'll use PhotoShop and turn that pepperoni into mushroom -- and add some spinach! It's my favorite kind, and you'll get more veggies!

It seems none of us are immune from taking holidays from our sensible selves. Elsewhere on CPH I see that Scoobees and Hisgal are back.
Monday
The last time I attended a Spin class was probably the day after the London Marathon. My motivation was to hear about it from the instructor, who did indeed tell us what it was like (I think she runs it every year). I decided to do Spin again. The instructor was quite perceptive and told me it looked like I was taking it easy (which I was). Still, I could see the body-jam people through the mirror and I'm pretty sure that however easy I was taking the spin class I was burning more calories than if I was doing jam.
I had a long task list and I wanted to cut it down so I would feel better. Naturally this meant attacking the easy things first. For example, booking another guest visit for my friend, booking myself a blood test, photocopying and posting a mobile phone bill (the idea is that they'll send me back a cheque - if I follow through, the entire mobile phone contract is almost free). The most 'meaty' chore was to go over to the college and apply for a course. I've taken the daring decision of applying for a full-time course which potentially would eat up 20 hours of my week. Not quite as much as a job, but part of me is scared because I got used to having lots of free time. The next step is that I will be invited to attend an assesment and an intreview at some point. I then cycled to LIDL which is still out of Broccoli. I bought a small sweet potato but didn't factor its size when microwaving it, which unfortunately meant that some of it burnt and most of the rest was inedible.
I enjoyed my afternoon double workout, even though I felt sufficiently spent after the first class to briefly wonder whether I should leave immediately or stay for the second class. As always was glad that I stayed. I think that even if I limited myself to afternoon workouts (as would be the case when studying full time) I'd still exercise enough.
Another day with focus on fruit which also meant focus on Whey Powder. I got this tub back in September so it lasted 10 months - mainly because I was successfully ignoring it most of the time. I unexpectedly finished the tub today so now there will be a few Whey-free weeks until I spot this product on sale again. I have some Soy Protein Isolate which needs finishing but I'm not looking forward to the floury texture!
Exercise: [AM] 45 min Spin, [PM] 45 min cycle to college/LIDL, 45 min BOSU, 60 min Body Step. 3.25 hours.

Ditto for me!
I hope that's a good thing? May I not lead anyone astray, by my rebellion
Nir, you just amaze me that you can analyze your foods day after day, and keep on doing it Hat's off to you!
Looking back over the past 5 years or so, that I've been working on the weight loss, I know that I've hit these times where I just can't write or track another thing. Thank the Lord that there are eating plans out there that don't require such careful tracking. Now, while I finish off this cycle of WL4I, I need to go back and review the eating plan for "Eat to Live"
Thanks for being there for all of us, Nir!

voodoodoll, these high-exercise days always seem to be down to breaking it down into individual chunks. Even 1.5 hours all-at-once (i.e. two short classes back-to-back) often leaves me wondering whether I have something better to do. I guess when I have a full-time course to do and can only manage evening visits to the gym, my activity level will fall a bit and be more like today's record.
We're only human - welcome back Scoobees and Hisgal :-)
Hisgal, I think it was inevitable that a few peple led each other. If I recall, there was a simultaneous rebellion involving quite a few regular CPH diarists. Hey, I've just spotted OWF logging her food again
My personal records: my last going-off-the-rails-in-a-big-way is September/October (can you beat 36 back-to-back binge days?) and I have been consistent without exception on a daily basis since St Valentine's day. I find it easy to do the small bit of "food admin" when I reason that this the tool that stops me from acting insane around food - seems like a very reasonable 'price' to pay for the feeling of control. [the minimum amount of admin is very managable - I just end up with total calories and total grams protein for the day (maintained throughout the day). The extra stuff I do writing it up for the diary takes a bit longer but if I'm ever busy it can wait a day - I feel it is optional for me] I also now read daily about other travellers' spiritual journeys on health.groups.yahoo.com/group/12step4coesLOOP/ (I've gone for the daily digest).
Tuesday
After morning pump did some shopping around for Whey. Holland & Barret are currently selling their 2lb tubs for £22 (so I have to wait till it is back on sale for £11). There is a market stall that sells 2lb for £18, which I wouldn't pay either, but their 5lb tubs are £30 (which is equivalent to £12 per 2lb - only 10% more than I've paid before). I was miffed that another shop on my list closed down since I last visited - the implication is that I missed a closing-down-sale at which I might have picked Whey at a good price. Oh well. The £30 tubs come in some tempting flavours so I may end up with that. In the meantime I held off on that but finally embraced RAW nuts - got myself 500g of Raw cashews on sale (worked out 40p per 100g) at Julian Greeves and whilst I still love the roasted/salted kind, there is nothing wrong with raw.
Decided to skip the gym in the afternoon (for no particularly good reason). Mum showed up - presents included: 1.5kg cooked beetroot (needs to be eaten by mid-August) and contents of 5 frozen tupperware boxes (she's reorganising her freezer): 3 boxes frozen home-made vegetable+legume soups, 2 boxes frozen cooked black-eyed beans. She also delivered a box full of 100 catheters (I'm wondering why I've been given these simple ones, they're 40cm in length - apparently you can get foldable ones which are a lot more practical for travelling - I'm thinking ahead here to my Saturday trip to Wolverhampton). She also sold me a spare bottle of bleach she had, and some ham she got at a fantastic price yesterday. We went together to Sainsbury's where I spotted two packages of pears reduced from £1.59 down to 39p (but I spotted that I'll be getting some money back on this deal - indeed it worked out just 10p for the two packs together). Some minor emergency came up for mum so I had to walk home with my shopping instead.
Looks like lack of Whey is contributing to better ETL compliance - say hello to low animal percentages despite a respectable fruit intake.

Hisgal, I think it was inevitable that a few peple led each other. If I recall, there was a simultaneous rebellion involving quite a few regular CPH diarists. Hey, I've just spotted OWF logging her food again
Yeah, I kinda HAD to start over again cause I was stalled and even GAINING weight without realizing it. Plus, I hear ya Nir, on the control thing AND on the exercise front. I have actually "quit" my INSANE unhealthy 2-3 hour exercise routines. I have also agreed to stop HIGH impact aerobics like ATTACK because they hurt my back in the long run-with degenerative disk disease I want to be careful, plus I just felt all my working out was excessive and not really HELPING me, but possibly exhausting me instead. I have a new approach and will see where that leads me. Its nice to know we can all lead each other once in awhile, cause I look to you guys for advice and I am glad you are here.

I agree, that I still love the roasted/salted kind, but I have come to really like the raw ones I know that they are healthier for me, without the salt and oil, that roasting adds. I usually go for the almonds and walnuts

OWF, does that mean you'll have to change your 'handle'? are you no longer obessesed with fitness?
The funny thing about my raw walnuts is that I don't even think of them as raw - I think I always have them this way.
Wednesday
The PAGE-UP/HOME button has fallen off my laptop's keypad. This is really annoying as I use it quite a bit. The laptop keys are fiddly and I cannot figure out if any bits of plastic are broken or indeed how to reattach it!
LIDL still out of broccoli. Till receipt came to more than I expected - it turned out that their half-price sale is winding down and the price of cauliflower has been revised (87% increase) so I didn't buy that. Last counselling session till September - involved some paperwork. Counsellor also queried the wisdom of embarking on that elaborate time-consuming course. Got caught in heavy rain on way back (even though it was mostly dry/sunny today). Dad tried explaining over the phone why 'jet streams' are causing unpredictable weather in the UK. Mum said dad is finding it hard to adjust to his new retirement and is resentful of the time I spend on the phone to her.
My commitment to read Richard Herring's 4 year blog ( richardherring.com/warmingup ) is finally finished. Took a lot longer than I expected but I did do other things besides. I usually have some documents with text I intend to read (text originates on the internet but I edit it in NOTEPAD, pasting multiple browser pages into a single text document) and it looks like the various documents are shrinking. At the same time my bank of MP3 files to listen to are also diminishing. At this rate I'll also be running out of MP3 files just at the moment I need them most (i.e. my train journeys to Wolverhampton and back on Saturday/Sunday) due to poor planning and not enough desire to do something about it!
My combat instructor is going on holiday for over 2 weeks. Sometimes there will be cover but on one ocassion it may get cancelled.
Today I felt hungry (why?) and so moved focus from fruits on to vegetables. Perhaps this was due to over-reliance on legumes and soup earlier in the day?

Nir,
Maybe you're right, maybe I will change my name to something more appropriate and healthy. Since obsessions (about anything) are pretty bad...maybe I will come up with something else. Suggestions accepted!

Oh dear, I can imagine one-million-and-one places where people are saying "OWF" or "ObsessedWithFitness" which will make no sense if your handle was changed!
Thursday
Unlike last week was up early and had no problem making Body Pump. Then took it easy at home for a couple of hours. Arranged to meet Rob after he signed on and spent time with him in the pub (2pm - 5pm) as he slowly drunk 3 pints. Then mum made contact and I rushed t meet her - we went to Bletchley where we toured ASDA, LIDL and IKEA. All shopping (with the exception of the chewing gum and the sweet potato) was at ASDA (a total of 4 shopping trips to ASDA in the space of 4 hours, each yielding something different). Home by 9.30pm. 3 suspect food choices (chicken-with-stuffing, pork-luncheon-meat, sweet-sour-chicken-takeaway) account for the high 'rubbish' percentage.

Friday
Mum asked if I'd like to come to LIDL. I decided I was lazy/busy and dictated a shopping list instead. Two heavy shopping bags for £1.57 means LIDL is still a good deal. I then managed to be 2 minutes late for body step. Even though the class is abbreviated to 45 minutes we managed to fit in all 3 "peak tracks". Found a good deal on cherries at Sainsbury's. Got samples at Waitrose. It was raining on the way to and back from the gym. Came home and continued to eat vast amounts of veggies (today is a transition day. it is the end of my re-feed and hence the first low day after 9 consecutive maintenance days - takes some getting used to!). Decided to skip OA as it would be raining all day.

Part of the day spent cooking vegetables that I'll take with me to Wolverhampton tomorrow (courgettes and cauliflower).
I'm aware that I am taking a risk but once I was full enough to transition from vegetables to fruits, I decided to add raw egg whites to my frozen fruit (there is a risk of salmonela, but I'm not in a high-risk group as I'm neither young nor old nor pregnant - well not that I know of).
To ensure my MP3 player is loaded with hours of reading-list materials, I needed to use software to convert text to MP3. This is the same software I use to read things out to me. It won't do both tasks at once. I briefly considered learning about 'VMWare' (creating a second, virtual machine on my laptop) but decided this would take too much time to figure out. Instead I resurrected the spare low-spec desktop that Nash built me around the Easter holidays. Had quite a bit of fun trying to network the two machines (it turned out that ZoneAlarm was the perpetrator - need to allow the machines to 'trust' each other). That and putting them on the same WORKGROUP and synchronising usernames and passwords. Then I just had to insteall the TTS software and I was finally "in business". Quite a project, actually. My 1GB player was empty in the morning and now it is half-empty (or half-full) so job done.
I asked my sister to buy some savoury TVP for me at Wolverhampton (just 23p per 100g) as the shop will be closed when I get there and she was kind enough to sacrifice her lunch-hour to go out and buy it for me.

Saturday - Part I
Last major workout (combat+pump) before our instructor returns in 2.5 weeks - enjoyable. She's catching some sun . I'm going away to Wolverhampton . Post-gym: a lazy shower and some shopping: 40p for pears(750g), £1 for iceberg lettuce (4 heads), £10.99 for chocolate-flavour Whey, £10.99 for vanilla-flavour Whey. There were 3 types of alcohol freebies to have at Waitrose but I gave them all a miss.
The big thing today is of course my sister's birthday party in Wolverhampton, associated travelling, food and drink arrangements. I'm taking with me cauliflower, courgettes, cabbage, leek, celery, cucumber and iceberg lettuce - all in large quantities. The rest of this report has to wait till Sunday.
Nothing tastes as good as abstinence feels.

Saturday - Part II
At 1pm I opened the chocolate-flavour Whey powder to try a bit (15g powder with 250g frozen pears) and all was good (except that they forgot to include a plastic scoop in the tub - luckily I retained the scoop from my old, banana-flavoured tub).
Additional shopping included mum's trip to the market, where she got me cauliflower, spinach, courgettes, runner beans and green beans - I need to pay her £4 the next time I see her. I also handed over £2.25 to my sister in exchange for some savoury TVP that she purchased for me on her lunch-break yesterday.
I ended up taking a total of 4.4kg vegetables on my trip - about 2/3 were consumed on Saturday [the rest on Sunday; all gone by the time I got home.]
Preparation:
eating at home: food eaten until 3.55pm: 536 caories, 37.8g protein. total weight of fruits and vegetables consumed at this point: 1.35kg.
eating including journey to wolverhampton 6.12pm: 576 calories, 40.2g protein. total weight of fruits and vegetables consumed at this point: 1.75kg.
Eating at the party: 8pm till 1.20am. Total calories in the range of 2150 (I only counted 2038 but there were some uncounted condiments and licks of the chocolate fountain so perhaps even exceeded 2150 a bit - I won't sweat it though), counted 98.2 grams protein so I didn't hit my 103.5g goal (but only missed it by 5%). People did most of their eating between 6pm and 8pm. I arrived at 8pm when interest in food was dwindling - didn't stop me from eating for most of the time. I only drunk approximately 6 shots of vodka - less than the others who drunk (there were a few drivers who therefore stayed sober, though). I was largely 'saved' by the availability of my own foods (shown in bold), and being quite careful earlier in the day.

Sunday
Got up and re-packed my back-pack and met my sister downstairs in her living-room / kitchen around 8am. Helped myself to a couple of chocolates before making some more sensible food choices. My brother also woke up and showed up. Left shortly after 8.30am. Train departed promptly on time but was parked at Nuneaton station for perhaps 45 minutes because of track problems further south. So many people joined our train from other delayed services that the train had to 'de-classify' so people could sit anywhere (even in First Class) but I stayed put. When we finaly got moving the train made up time and I was only 25 minutes behind schedule by the time I got off at Milton Keynes at 11.43am. I cycled directly to the gym for my Body Jam class. It looks like the instructor covering Body Combat for the next couple of Saturdays for the instructor going on holiday is also going on holiday. I'm beginning to wonder if there will be any Combat at all in the next 2 weeks! Got home after 2pm and decided to skip the PM gym visit. Had naps throught the afternoon/evening. still have to deal with most of the vegetables that mum purchased on my behalf.
Food shopping over the 7 days: 0.42 + 2.45 + 0.58 + 5.80 + 2.57 + 29.63 + 0 = £41.45 (twice as much as usual: that'll be the Whey powder)
I like my low "rubbish percentage". Realise that my 'highish' animal percentage is a direct consequence of wanting to eat more fruit today (and on a low-calorie day). Incidentally current plan is to alternate high and low days (one of each). Today's food is so much simpler than yesterday's, to write down and analyze!

Yes (because my abstinence is from compulsive over-eating, not from alcohol per se)
Monday
My red rash returns this morning in response to a breakfast consisting of cauliflower with curry powder and frozen cherries with egg whites. My suspicion is the frozen cherries! I quickly pop to the library to return Exercise Physiology, a book that I realise I'm unlikely to read. I head to the gym for a morning Spin class with Angela - her last pre-holidays class. Afterwards I stop at H&B for 2 more tubs of Whey. I now have the full set, all 4 flavours of interest (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana).
In the afternoon I arrive at the gym in plenty of time and relax in the sauna. Annoyingly the AAA battery in my MP3 player is depleted just at that moment (over the last few days I've quickly been going through a bank of such batteries. it is a shame I cannot effectively pretest them as the multi-meter suggests they have sufficient charge). I relax in silence and possibly nod off briefly. I present myself at the BOSU class but Kriss won't let me join as the warm-up has already been completed. I'm a bit miffed but do the very next best thing - infiltrate the Jam class, where instructor Jackie has been joined at the front by a new trainie-intructor who is "shadowing" her. I compensate for the easy class by doing Body Step with 2 risers throught the class (with the exception of the speed-step). I get to Sainsbury's at just the right time when Simon is making final reductions - I spend £1.05 and walk away with two full and heavy carrier bags (see below).

Oh my, that reminds me of The Drinking Man's Diet.
You start the day with a shot of whiskey, then have one for breakfast an hour later. Then mid morning, late morning, and of course for lunch. You continue this way throughout the day until bedtime.
Now of course you ask how anyone can lose weight doing this, and of course the answer is that you don't but by noon you don't care!
Sorry Nir. I seem to invade your diary with little but nonsense each week. It's my "down time."

Peter, to be fair that's only 3 days featuring alcohol in 2007 (and I have to count New Year's Eve to make that 3) so I don't think alcohol will be a frequent feature of my diet. The next time I anticipate drinking would be at the Notting Hill Carnival towards the end of August.
You're always welcome to "invade" my diary and say anything you like. In fact I wish more people did (and I wish I felt free to do so in the other diaries. after all, I do read them all, and always have).
Tuesday
Had to get up early to attend a college assesment. For literacy I scord 'level 2 exhibiting some level 3 skill', for numeracy I scored 'level 3'. Next step is an interview in 2-3 weeks. I cycled on to LIDL where I spent a £1 on some vegetables (still no broccoli). On the way home stopped off at M&S on a freebie hunt. Couldn't find anything anywhere except for some nuts at the nut stand.
At the gym, our body pump class, normally taken by our 52-year-old instructor was taken by a child , definitely less than half her age, probably early 20s. I stopped at Sainsbury's just before getting to the gym and this was a miscalculation. By the time I got to the studio I was fighting for plates. I almost didn't have enough plates to do the Squat track (luckily I was able to borrow a 5kg plate, just for that track, from a girl who wasn't using hers). On the way home picked up some Satsumas at Sainsbury's.
Read a weekly newsletter on the internet which reports an MP3 player price crash. Recently paid £17.50 and had much hassle (and waited a month) to get a 1GB. Now looks like I could have one from a local shop for £14.99 (or £8.94 for a 512MB one - so far I haven't filled mine to this extent).
The 42 eggs I picked up on Thursday are finally gone today. Also made headway with various vegetable-processing tasks.
I thought it was funny that Scoobees decided she'll be unlikely to follow Eat To Live because of the large amounts of produce involved. That is what is attractive about it. Today I had a low day (1550 calories) - so let me list my fruits and vegetables eaten today, by weight:
951g cauliflower-cooked
501g pear-frozen
482g cherries-frozen
308g blueberries-frozen
298g apple-frozen
275g courgettes-cooked
272g cabbage-cooked
267g green-beans-cooked
118g spinach-cooked
110g sugar-snap-peas-cooked
61g sweet-potato-cooked
--------------------
Total = 3643g, which (converting) is 8lb of fruits and vegetables. (and if I had more calories to spare, I would have been happy to eat more.)
Scoobees: if you do not enjoy eating [which seems to be what you are implying] how is it possible for you to have recently gained weight? :-)

**Invading Nir's diary**
Scoobees: if you do not enjoy eating [which seems to be what you are implying] how is it possible for you to have recently gained weight? :-)
Hey!!! Where did I ever say that I don't enjoy eating???!!! How in the world would I have made it to 211 pounds if I didn't love eating?? Unfortunately, yes, it's the wrong foods I love. I wish I could chow down the amounts of veggies you do. It's not that I don't like them (well, some of them) just not in the quantities that apparently Eat To Live suggests. Somehow the idea of pounding down 2 pounds of veggies just doesn't excite me much. Hopefully once I actually read the book I'll be at the very least better informed and maybe even adopt some of its principles. I guess I shouldn't even be forming opinions since I haven't even started chapter one!
**Still invading**
I actually did have a purpose for invading your diary. On the Physics Diet site, I cannot find anything that defines the different levels of activity to pick for my profile. Of course, bed rest is self-explanatory...but I didn't see any info to help in regards to choosing one. I picked 'sedentary' only because the RMR values looked close to the ones given here. Funny, I don't feel sedentary. I think 'active' gave me a total energy expenditure of a little over 2,000. I thought that was quite high, so I chose sedentary instead. Do you have any thoughts on that? Does it even matter?
Thanks.

if I broke it down into
target #1 eat 1lb of raw vegetables (salads) throughout the day
target #2 eat 1lb of cooked vegetables (steamed, soups etc.) throughout the day
which target do you instinctively think is the harder one?
In pyysicsdiet.com, click My Profile (top right) and select:
Bed Rest = 1.2 = same as BFFM+CPH uses for 'sedentary'
Sedentary = 1.3 =
Active = 1.4 = similar to the 1.375 that BFFM+CPH uses for 'lightly active'
Very Active = 1.5 = similar to the 1.55 that BFFM+CPH uses for 'moderately active'
So, if you're regularly exercising, pick appropriately.
As physicsdiet.com has a link to CPH, I have a hunch that they may have based their actvitiy levels on the ones in RMR calculator before we updated them.
