I generally write in a couple different styles. Story telling / example setting, stream of conscious or sort of jumpy (from topic to topic) style. Sorry if I do and it's annoying at all! I usually try really hard to make things legible and I will go back and edit as I see fit. This will probably be the longest post I make on this... And most of it is just junk information about me and how I grew up.
Let's see... I'm part silly, sarcastic, procrastinator, part self starter, peer motivator, leader and a pinch of competitiveness.
My goal is to flip flop that and to have more self esteem and assurance in my own self to know that I CAN compete. Win or lose! Sometimes I don't even want to try something because I "know" I will fail. But how do I know if I don't try, right? Fear of failure is a big deal for a lot of people!
As far as where I am coming from and where I am going:
I'm a 25 year old Italian and Scottish mix. I'd like to say something witty here about my hot Italian swim suit model body... but alas I do not have one!... yet...
Yes, I can hold my liquor and out drink most people...Sounds exciting! But VERY unhealthy! I don't normally drink btw... just being silly there. It's far to unhealthy and expensive to drink.
My mother and father met each other while in the San Jose chapter of the #%@&!'s Angels biker gang.
They are divorced.
My dad is a Vietnam veteran who doesn't talk much about it. He was raised in the farmlands of Minnesota. He was the geek with the coke bottle glasses with tape holding them together... He has been employed by the Boeing company since I was about 4 years old. (You want to know about aerospace go ask him! He seems to make knowledge of it not only his profession but his hobby.) He recently stopped smoking (2 1/2 years clean!) and has cut back on his drinking habit by probably 75%. Which makes me proud but I wish he could have done it sooner when I was still young.
My mom is the daughter of and Air Force captain. The standard military brat rebel attitude. She was forced to grow up early in life and help care for her sister and two brothers. You could say my grandpa was stern with his punishments too. My grandmother is a little Italian lady who drinks too many martinis and blabs about her experience working for Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem. My mom is trained in architecture and as an oral and maxillofacial surgery assistant.
Most of my childhood I was abused by my mother physically, mentally, and verbally. I am just now coming to grips with the reality of this. Punishments included harsh beatings with sticks, belts, whips, back hands, punches to the face that would nearly break my nose and cause fantastic nose bleeds...
I worked hard. We usually lived in hand made tents (tarps stretched over lodge poles) or trailers on large acres of land while building log cabins. By age 4 I knew how to fell a tree and skin the bark off using a machete and hatchet. By 9 I was plotting foundations for buildings and pouring footings. We had no electricity, running water, no TV or computers... We had a car.
If I wanted food I could go catch a fish, shoot a deer, butcher a turkey or chicken. Maybe pluck something from our massive garden.
At 4 am I would wake up and feed all of the animals and start a pot of water to boil on the stove to take showers with. The water was either collected from the neighbor's well (2 miles away) or from rain run off into large 40 gallon drums.
I was capable of carrying two 5 gallon jugs of water in each hand with no problems when I was 12 years old. It would seem a little harder for me now.
At 9 years old my mom and brother began telling me I had "Thundara Tighs" and that the Earth shook when I walked. At 12 years old I experienced an extremely painful growth spurt. Shins, rib cage, hips, fore arms.. everything hurt very very bad. I didn't really want to walk because my legs hurt so bad.
I had stretch marks from that. I out grew my mom's shoe size and had to use hand-me-downs from my older brother (he had size 11's) which were waaay too big! (I wear 8 1/2's) My mom took me into to get fitted for a bra once (VERY embarrassing when some old lady wants to help you in the dressing room and you tell everyone to get out and leave you alone!!!) A 12 year old with size C/D cups! Yeah.. Men started staring at me... It was very disturbing! They thought I was my mom's younger sister!
That summer I moved to my father's place hoping to find it more stable and less abusive. I just wanted to be a kid before I grew up... Though my dad was an alcoholic and I would hardly ever see him if at all. When I did he was normally sleeping him his chair in front of the TV or arguing with my older brother. But he NEVER hit anyone! He was a lamb compared to my mother. (For the record my mom as kicked, bit, punched, stabbed, cleaved... and shot people. All in the name of "self defense" ...and to not lay a hand on her or her Harley... She's also good at getting people arrested! When my dad was drunk she would tell him to go outside and fetch something form the car. then Lock the door and call the cops on him. The cops just thought he was a crazy drunk guy!)
The only mental abuse I really got from my dad was how he used to tell me I was "Too stupid to go to college" while he was drunk. If I told him these things he would cry and apologize later.
At family events growing up I didn't like to be around people, especially while eating. So I normally ate very little and very slowly. Finding something to read or making small talk to stretch the time out until everyone had left the room. One of several occasions, dating to this past Christmas, I was told by my grandmother that she thinks that I have "had enough" to eat. Telling EVERYONE that she had seen me grab more pie and stuff and that's why I took so long to eat. Which was completely untrue... They would also comment how my #%@&! looks like two beach balls fighting for the same spot. (It doesn't, I went around asking people! lol The usual reaction when asking someone a question like that is they twist their face and wrinkle their brows and blink is disbelief while saying, "Nooo....? Why would you ask that...?")
lol
At 12 I wore a size 9 in juniors. I was 5'3" and weighed 134 lbs. (All of the kids called me fat and so I hid myself with baggy ugly clothes.)
At 16 I was 5' 4" and weighed 155lbs. (My friends all had cars -- end of story!)
At 17 I weighed 172lbs. (I moved to California to help my mother (now less abusive) take care of my great grandmother. While renovating the house, yard, fencing etc. And eating salads and drinking teas --- I weighed in at 164 but quickly went back to 178 lbs after I stopped working on the house.
At 18 I got married to an Army man. I knew him in high school... I weighed 180 lbs. an was 5'5". When the guys got deployed to Kuwait for this Iraq war I became depressed and hardly ate at all. My friend and I worked out for 2 hours in the AM at the gym on base. I eventually did 2 hours in the PM as well. Another friend of mine liked to go for walks around the neighborhood.
I lost a couple dress sizes but put on more weight. (probably muscles...?)
Years later I am divorced and I had gone through a security guard job and a newspaper delivery job. At the security guard job I found it entertaining to time myself as I ran each floor (lobbies and stairs) in 27 mins for 25 stories. Every hall was checked. Every door locked. Each door for a lobby I came too from the stair well had to be unlocked before I could pass through it. What like a little over a minute per floor??? I thought that was pretty good! I was also running 3 miles in the mornings and doing 10 or 15 min walks at night before bed. Again I lost pant sizes but not weight.
The newspaper job.. lets not go there! 7 nights a week you sit in your car throwing paper out your window. I had irregular eating, sleeping and activity... I weighed about 240 or so.
NOW not doing much of anything I weigh 225 lbs and I actually feel.. FAT. After all that!!! NOW I feel it and see it.
I know that's a long story to blab on about but it helps me see the different patterns of how I lived and I have treated myself and WHY. The cause and effect of things.
It helps me see what I can change and avoid in the future. What I want to know is if I weighed 130 when I was 12 and the average adult female for my frame size is healthy around 130 - 145... How do I get back down that way and it that a realistic weight level for ME???
I consider myself to have a large dense frame but who knows...
lol sometimes I try to do stupid stuff when looking at myself in the mirror. Like sucking in the gut to see the difference or holding my posture a certain way... Trying to get a good idea of... of where my muscle ends and bone structure begins. It's silly... I know!

So I generally find myself learning new things everyday. Yesterday I found out that an average female adult burns about 50 more calories after drinking a cup of coffee.
I've always been confused on the coffee idea and I have been trying to stay away from it because I like to put cream and sugar in it! So if I avoid it altogether that's good right?
Today I found out that you can improve weight loss by making sure you have the proper Calcium intake. Vitamin D is important to be able to process Calcium and many people (like me) don't get enough sun exposure for it. Also, a serving of Vitamin D fortified milk is not nearly enough to help absorb all the Calcium you need per day.
There's lots of messages out there saying to get 3 a day of dairy products for all of the calcium and that's great but there's not enough Vitamin D to help take it all in! Another good reason for multivitamins and some healthy sun exposure!
I burn very, very easily so the sun scares me a little!
I found out a few other things that can help with Calcium intake as well!
- Sardines
- Chinese cabbage
- Soy products
- Salmon
- nuts and seeds
- consuming less salt
That's all I got right now!
Laterz!

Hi, Lisa! Welcome to the site!
What a story. You and I have a lot in common. I'm also Italian (50%), and I would love to have that Italian body, too. Maybe someday.
I have the best mother in the world, but I was abused by my father, and haven't seen him in 14 years (his choice). He is also a vet, from the Navy.
Growing up, I did hear some fat comments from my family (usually Grandma and Grandpa, especially Grandpa), and I did hear a lot from school. I've always been overweight, but when I was 17, I shot up to 330 pounds, and stayed over 300 until last year. I know what a trying experience it is to just want to be like "everyone else", but many people won't even give you the chance.
As far as your ideal weight goes, from what I understand, it's something you'll just have to experience to know. I'm 220 now, and would love to get down to 155, but I don't know how feasible that is for me. Only time will tell. Just stick with it and try to focus less on the number on the scale, and more on your body fat and how you feel.
I don't drink coffee, because caffeine keeps me up at night, even when taken first thing in the morning. A lot of people on here rely on it, and still lose weight, but I definitely agree that if you can, avoiding it altogether is best.
You're a pretty lady! Rather than being harsh on yourself when looking in the mirror, try to focus on the positive qualities. I've found that mentality really is at least half of the weight loss journey - eating right and exercising is important, but when you love and appreciate yourself, it can make all the difference in the world.
Stay strong! One day, you and I will both be Italian foxes.
I look forward to reading about your journey.

Ha ha Italian foxes! I was saying that because most of the women in my family would sit around gabbing over cocktails and saying how "This year" they will be ordering that "Italian swim suit model bikini!"
>.<
I've been trying to treat myself better. I have a habit of caring for others too much and neglecting myself!

So! I took my measurements for the first time since the 17th and So far I have lost almost 2 inches off my waistline!!!! (Which is amazing to me... I kept measuring it over and over thinking I was doing something wrong! lol)
Upper arms are down by only half an inch... But still it's progress!
Calves are down by .75 inches... All this walking/hiking is doing me some good!
Nothing else has changed so far though
Maybe soon though!
I still don't have a scale so I do not know my weight and I forgot to weigh myself when I visited my friend the other day.

Found a cool article on Military.com about weight loss.
http://www.military.com/military-fitness/weight-loss/need-to-lose-40-lbs
There's a link in there for a free meal chart (basic ideas for meals not to eat everything it says) It's a Word Doc so make sure you have that!
Also here is one on building lean muscle and burning fat...

Today I walked 3 miles to meet up with a lady at the Curves Women's fitness place near me and the whole 3 miles back home! I haven't walked like that in a long while and it's feels pretty good!
I did find out that they are doing a fitness study for 30 days (for 30$) with the Avon company. After the study if you feel you got something done and want to join then they take the $30 and put it towards your joining fees. So it's sort of like getting the 1st month free...

| The Curves thing- did you think you would like it? People either love it or feel it is not intense enough, in what I have heard. You are doing so much outside, etc, already, but it would help with the strength training part of things, right? Are you going to join?

I felt they were knowledgeable and supportive. There's a wide range of ages and body types. The new manager of the place i went to has photos of herself (and other people) up from 8 months ago. She was probably heavier than I am now and today she looks lean and toned.
I think I will join. The fees are a little over $1 per day if you take a look at it... Not bad. There is a one time service fee but for the amount other people pay for personal trainers and gym memberships... I think this is a good deal.
As far as I know you can make it as intense as you want too. There's a prerecorded voice that cuts into the music and tells people to switch stations. In between each machine is a pad that you can jog in place or whatever to keep your heart rate up and going. It didn't look like the people there were doing enough in between machine to keep their heart rates up but that's all up to them!
They gave me a short physical (measurements, height, weight, Health history etc.) Asked about my goals and what not.
They figured my body fat is at 41% Which is way too high but not as bad as I originally figured. I'm still thinking that I would meet Military standards by October or November. November being my original goal and the Curves ladies looked at what they figured was decent and said it was a good challenge.

I have found two different pages telling me what my Body fat % needs to be to meet Army standards. One said 32% and another said 37% Either way I need to lose some! And I could probably easily get to 32% by working harder... Much harder...
So today I sat down and really spoke with my boyfriend, Dave, about all of this. His original dream was to join the military and go into a science type MOS, but something is holding him back I think. He still does want to join up.. Maybe he is affraid to know what condition his body is really in. Maybe he is lazy and doesn't want to do the hard work??? I think he's the kind of guy that if he gets a nudge out the door he'll keep up the pace...
I told him he needs to promise to go walking and work out with me. Trying to do 30 mins or more cardio a day and weights and calisthenics every other day. I can't do this alone because I know I will fail if I try it alone.
His original response to that was, "Even on the days I work???"
Yes... wake up an hour earlier...Instead of playing videos games and paying $15 a month for World of Warcraft to spend time with "friends" who could care less about you... You could be out in the real world meeting new REAL friends and getting healthy all the while working towards a common goal with ME. So we can support each other in OUR efforts to achieve OUR dream of going into the military. Or he can stay at his dead end retail job and play "Warcrack" until he dies of heart failure at 30 something, having never finished a degree or been able to afford anything other than this #%@&! apartment and his crack video games.
He promised but I guess I will find out if he means it or not...
It's just that I can't do this alone and I feel he has no excuses to go on... This is stupid that a GAME would take precedence over OUR life together.
I played Warcraft off and on for over 3 years. Taking really long breaks.. when I was really broke. Anywhere from 3 - 9 months... Again I am laid off and we are REALLY broke. ALL of Dave's next paycheck is going towards rent and unless I can borrow some money we cannot pay PUD or our internet until his mid month check. And only then could he afford to let me do the Curves fitness program too. His last few pay checks were really low because he had a horrible cold for almost a month! (another reason to get in shape and healthier!)
I've been out weekly looking for jobs and have hardly found anything. Applied for two more yesterday and since July of 2008 I have only had 3 interviews and no luck!
Warcraft is not funny anymore the $15/month could go to an IRA or savings, food, clothing, bills, student loans... anything but a video game!
But then he tells me, "Some of these people are my friend's and I knew them in real life!" That's good.. so they moved far away and you moved far away and they have your phone number, home address, e-mail AND Myspace page and they STILL don't talk to you at all! To top it off... those guys he used to know in real life... Hardly if at all EVER play Warcraft because they have lives outside of it!! They go to college or work!!!
If they were really his friends they would support him in his efforts to achieve his dreams and they would make an active effort to keep contact with him by any means possible not cause him to become scared of losing them if he went off to do what he wanted.
Then he says well I don't know anyone here! He's been here for nearly two years and knows no one...?
So I asked about his co-workers he's borrowed dvd's from or helped repair computers for. Or most of all.. what about me and our relationship...? Hmm?
"But WoW helps me relax, okay?!" So.. alcohol relaxes me too but I know it causes internal irreversible damage, I could get addicted and it's expensive... What's your point? What about going for a jog or reading a book to relax when you get home from work? Maybe a cup of tea and having a conversation with me??? Hmm???

So he's addicted.. I know this.. There's is self help groups for gamer folks. Yup!
When will he snap out of it...? Only time will tell and hopefully it's sooner than later because it is such a waste of a bright personality...
Maybe.. just maybe I should have a recruiter come to our place instead of asking him if he wants to go to a recruiter? Time for an intervention!
People keep telling me I should leave him. Here's the deal, if this were a marriage - and it nearly is - I would not just GIVE UP! You can't do that! In fact giving up on anything is just retarded. (and for the record I am a divorced military wife already so this is personal experience here...) If I left (let's imagine I have an amaaazing job that could pay for all that!) He would be mad and depressed that I left and he could delve deeper into that stupid game thinking he is finding some solace in it! Meanwhile I would get sad and depressed and not continue to work towards my goals that I have set for myself.
If I stay I could tactfully ween him off of the game and give him extra encouragement and support to make him believe he is worth something and will achieve all the things he sets his mind to. In the process both of us become better people and a more close knit relationship forms.
In the long term, and highly, unlikely event that he doesn't "change" or rather "adapt" THEN I will move on without him because he would then be holding me back.
That would be by this up coming fall or winter when I have met my fitness goals...

Something I have been trying to spread the word about is the ongoing story of Sebastian Copeland. Sebastian is an environmentalist and photographer who is on his way to the north pole. This marks the 100 anniversary of Robert Peary's successful trip in 1909.

| The Curves thing sounds like an excellent way to add to what you are already doing! I hope you can work out your finances to join soon. I hope you can engage the bf in some of the things you are trying to do. My brother plays games like that all the time, and I wish some girl would come along and sweep him back into the real world!

That's tough, Lisa.
I'll admit that I am addicted to video games - they're a big part of my life. I still make time for exercise, though, and most importantly, I'm not with anybody. That changes the whole perspective.
Kudos to you for sticking with him - many women wouldn't. I don't play online games (ruins the experience for me), but the ones I've talked to tired of it eventually, and usually say things like, "I can't believe I wasted X number of months or X number of years."
Video games can be very fun, but unbelievable addictive.
But...I'm also a guy who has no social life whatsoever, no real life friends, and has never even been on a date. So, maybe you should take that with a grain of salt.
Good luck with the Curves!

I am actually my BF's 2nd GF and first real date date...
He did go walking with me today and he didn't really break a sweat at all! I am so jealous it's like he has 4 or 5 foot long legs... (He's 6'3") he kept being silly and trying to stay ahead of me to walk faster the whole time while I was trying to keep up. Which was the plan for bringing him along.
I know plenty of guys who are like him.. or like Nick here.
It's sort of sad. One of my friend's actually complained constantly of his low self esteem and girl's lack of interest in him. And he knows it. It's just a matter of time before he gets the hint and the urge to step outside and blind the world with his pasty gamer skin... I told him I started going out walking and working out and his reply was, "OMG! TELL ME YOU DIDN'T GO OUTSIDE!!!" It was really silly! Sad but so true! Since then he has been off WoW more lately as well and getting more active with outside friends and has since met a new chick who he is sort of dating. He has more self esteem and has lost a lot of weight. And I have noticed his complexion is clearer and he has this healthy sort of glow about him.
My other friend James tried to get into the Air Force but has been slacking off that goal for a possibly easier target of an entry level career with the University of Phoenix. Good news is the job might assist with college tuition and grants to allow James to finish his degree.
Whatever the case so far that I have seen not playing games has a HUGE impact on the overall self. Whether it's self esteem, health, social well being, general awareness of your surroundings.
Nick, it is good that you are forcing yourself to not have excuses and to find the time someplace for healthy exercise. If everyone could do things in moderation the world would definitely be a better place!
I started to work on a quilting project today that I started about 3 years ago! lol It's just been packed away in storage hopefully it turns out ok!

Laundry day! Packed up a load of stuff and headed a few blocks down the road to the laundry mat. Pretty good work out carrying all that stuff! I feel like people look at me funny when they see me carrying stuff. I have had neighbor's offer to give me rides or bus drivers stop thinking I was trying to catch a bus...
It's sort of a good challenge. Everyday things they we have simplified so far as to drive a few blocks to the laundry mat or store spending $ on gas, getting no exercise for only a few things... It's silly. The longer I go without a car the more I realize just how silly I have been sometimes!
By the way if I didn't mention it Sebastian Copeland reached the top of the world... The North Pole on Sunday! I'm so excited for him! I could only hope I can achieve great things like that some day! It's over 400 mile hike across ice (that is very thin in some places) in sub zero temps! As far as I know so far they did not use any sled dogs just him and his team mate pulling their own sledges.
Last I checked he did not offer any updates so I hope he is doing ok. He had a last known up link on Google Earth that was just a few notches off from the very tip top there.

So a couple days ago I found out that Sebastian Copeland is Orlando Bloom's cousin. I thought he looked familiar!!!
I guess they went to the antarctic together not that long ago and now Sebastian is with his friend up at the North Pole advocating for people to go greener!
Here's an organization he works with... He's right up there with the board of directors...

| I always tell people how crucial water is for the body. The only beverage I've had in 2009 is water, about a gallon and a half daily. Sure I pee a lot but it's nice to have a job that gives me 20 minutes of break time a day. I just take 3-4 minute breaks at a time to go and eat my lunch and snacks at my desk. As of January 1st, I was something like 17% bodyfat and now I'm at 11.9% and I owe it all to the water principle. Keep up the good posts. I really enjoy reading them....

Oh man! Yesterday I slacked off and didn't drink as much as I have been for the last couple months and I woke up with an excruciating head ache like I was hungover from drinking alcohol!!! I've just been downing water all morning!

| I am terrible at drinking water and staying hydrated... even though I tell myself to drink it and sometimes even have the bottle of water handy. I got a scale that figures out lbs, body fat % and hydration % and it does really help me to remember to drink more when I see that I am underhydrated~

How does it do that? Does your scale have little electrode things in the thing where your feet go?
So I don't know if my headache was from being under hydrated after all. It's been going on all day. I ate some food to see if that helped. It normally does. But it didn't. I think maybe it is a caffeine withdrawal headache. I have had them in the past when cutting back on soda pop.
So it's tapering down now after all day fatigued feeling, sound sensitivity and eye pains. I have really good hearing too so it's hard to not hear things... As in shutting them out. High pitches and that fingernails on chalk board type sounds really get me. I keep thinking of what I am going to do when I have a family of my own and they are running around screaming and what not. I will probably go bonkers!
Today I got my tax return, my EBT food stamp card thingy filled up and Dave got paid. So all in all it was a good day. Our rent is paid for, an come the 15th we can get caught up on bills and then Dave's tax return will hopefully be here.
We were talking about getting another vehicle since both of ours are long gone. (mine broke down during the winter and I couldn't pay for the repairs or the car loan so I gave it up to the bank. Dave's car was towed off by the city. They claimed it had been sitting parked in the same spot for more than two weeks when it had only been 4 days! We had just moved here too! I later found out my next door neighbor wanted a place to park and was having everyone's car towed who parked on his side of the street!) I looked in the newspaper, on Craigslist.com and on eBay for affordable cars and trucks. So far I found one vehicle I could afford but the guy only left a cell phone # and it has since been disconnected. He's probably in the same boat as everyone else... Broke and hurtin'.
Dave decided he is going to invest in a bike. I have a bike already and I got a helment today so this could prove pretty interesting. No gas, no traffic really. We can take the bikes on trails or on streets. No registration fees, license fees, etc. Lots of cardio and it's good for the environment! So the idea of getting a new vehicle is on hold for now.
Today I got a tiny 1 gig Ipod so now I can take my music with me when I go for walks. Got a cool travel water bottle with an insulator carry case around it along with a new set of exercise clothes and a pair of Dr. Scholl's running shoes. They are sooo comfortable!!! So come Monday I am enrolling in the Curves / Avon fitness study! *yay* Lets hope it helps!
K laterz!

This is "The Plan" I got from a guy who is also trying to lose weight to get into the military.
On 01/01/09 I weighed in at 303lbs and… I now weigh 250lbs as of 04/08/09 and I am shooting for 200. I went from a 52.5 inch ab measurement to a 46 inch and I went from a size 42 pant to a 38. I am not a doctor, a nutritionist, or a dietitian so I cannot legally give you this data as a program. This is for you to read to see what I have done and if you practice anything read here, it is at you own will.
Let’s talk about how the weight is lost. It comes down to this… Calories. You have to burn more calories per day than you intake. If you intake 2,000 calories per day and let’s say that your body used up 1,200 calories naturally through your day and then you went to the gym and burned off 300 calories, you still stored away 500 calories which equals no weight loss for the day. You can it retrospect burn it the next day, but it can easily get ahead of you and you won’t catch up. You need a well balanced program of cardio and weight lifting during your week to burn more than you intake. I jog, walk, swim, use the elliptical, do the stationary bike, trail ride on the weekends, lift weights, etc. I spend at least two hours a day working out but just one hour is fine too. I recommend the YMCA as your gym if possible. They have a whole range of exercise equipment, free personal trainer advice, programs, etc. They also have a pool for swimming and a sauna/steam room for sweating it out. Let me clear something up about lifting weights. I have heard too many people (Especially Recruiters) advise against it. This is stupid. It’s potentially setting you up for failure. It is a medically proven fact that the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn. “But doesn’t muscles weigh more than fat?!?!??” Yes, they do. However, it is not enough to matter unless you are just some jacked up body builder. You will burn more fat with more muscle. I have been weight lifting since the start of my diet and what are my results? A loss of 53 pounds, nicely cut legs and my arms are really starting to look toned. The best weight lifting style to follow for maximizing fat burn from muscle is using a lower weight than you normally would while doing more reps. If you would normally do 100 pounds on a certain machine with 10 reps because that was enough to make you stop before you started your next set, do 70 pounds with 15 reps. It’s called the low weight-high rep process. Any personal trainer can confirm that. You can go as low as you want, but remember to add more reps the lower you go with the weights. For my personal work out, I add 5 reps for every 10 pounds I take off the machine. Another doing way to do this is to do 10 reps on 100 pounds, rest for 30 seconds, do ten more on 90, rest for 30, 10 more on 80, so on and so forth until you just can’t do it anymore.
Fact: Your body burns calories while sleeping. If you weight lift or do a lot of cardio, your muscles will consume a ton of calories while you sleep rebuilding the torn muscles from weight lifting or cardio. It’s an amazing balance… muscles get big and toned fast and the fat goes down. I swim everyday for at least 20 minutes. This is the best form of exercise period and any doctor will agree. You actually get a lot of cardio and muscle building from this. You gain the cardio from the faster pulses, the breathing, and the pace of endurance. You gain muscles from pulling back the weight of the water with every stroke and push against the weight of the water with your feet. When you aren’t at the gym, find ways to get exercise. I know that 7 laps around my office building is 1 mile and that I have 30 minutes for lunch. I can get 10 laps of walking in during those 30 minutes which is almost 1.5 miles. That’s around 7.5 miles of walking per week! Every time I go to the restroom at work, I stop by our conference room or somewhere private and do 20 push-ups. It all adds up.
We all have heard that females lose weight at a slower rate than men. This is true for the most part. It goes back to what I was saying about more muscle – more fat burn. Men naturally have more muscle mass then women. It’s just nature. It’s the way us males are built. That being said, a female that stays in shape and tones her muscles well, will burn more fat than the male that doesn’t work on his muscles and such because she has more muscle mass. She doesn’t have to lift a lot of weights and look manly. She just has to lift and tone properly for her age and body type and she can and will lose as much as any male would. People have always thought female weight loss was slower because of their natural born metabolism rate and junk, and I thought this too until a doctor educated me on this. Now with all of THAT being said, this workout and diet routine (as well as any others) works for females and males both equally.
As far as food… Everybody has different tastes and different amounts that they want to eat. Count those calories, and watch the sugar and salt. I can say hands down that if you want to lose weight and if you want to do it fast, stop the sodas. No diet sodas either. The chemicals in diet soda can slow your metabolism and hurt your liver. Water is your best friend on any diet. It cleans you and keeps you hydrated. I lost more weight my first month than the last 2 months just from detoxing my body of sodas and fried fat with water. Stay away from Gatorade and Powerades. They are full of sugar and calories. If you are already in great shape and work or play really hard, then these can be ok. Milk…. I use to love some whole milk. Now I am drinking skim. I would never think about going to skim before, but it is worth the weight loss. It has no fat. You can even work your way down to it by going to 2% then to 1% before using skim. Be careful though! Skim milk has the same amount of sugar as whole milk so don’t drink it like water. Have a glass for breakfast and one for dinner. Use it as a meal compliment, not as an “I’m just thirsty” drink. If you want a good juice, try diet grape juice. It has no sugar and I thought it was going to be disgusting, but it turns out that they add cranberry juice to it to give it a natural sweetness.
I use to eat only white bread as well. That was a mistake. White bread will put on the pounds. Wheat bread is much better, but what I will recommend is a multi-grain wheat bread. It tastes more like white bread and has less fat than wheat. Some baked chips are okay, but read the labels and eat only 1-2 servings worth. Stay away from meats such as pepperoni, salami, etc. They have a lot of fat and grease. Stick to turkey, low sodium ham, and a bit of roast beef. If you just cannot live without mayo, use a very light spread. Mustard and hot sauce is a free for all. They have no fat, calories, etc. Mustard and hot sauce can be your friend on a diet. Do your best to stay away from fried foods all together. If you do, your skin will clear up and the weight will come off fast. Baked chicken and fish are good. White corn tortia chips are fine, but no melted cheese or high calorie and sodium salsas. A good burger alternative that I love is Boca burgers. You can find them in the frozen section area, usually not with regular burgers. They are soy and kind of taste like McDonald's meat. I microwave them and put them on the multigrain wheat, with a slice of pepper jack cheese, pickles, a little mayo, mustard, and hot sauce with a tall glass of water. It will fill you up. Also, I like to eat the low fat popcorn, but it has to be the kind without butter and such. Also needs to be the kind you pop in the microwave. Do not eat any rice cakes, even the regular ones. Sure, the package nutritional facts look good, but the turn into sugar when in your blood stream. Everyone thinks they are great but doctors recently figured this out and they are a not good for you. You can have eggs, but try to stay away from a lot of scrambled eggs. I eat a boiled egg here and there, but don’t eat the yolk. If you eat bacon, go with turkey bacon and make sure to drain all the grease. Do not eat oatmeal unless it is regular plain. Regular grits are good too. Do not eat common cereals. They are full of all kinds of bad things. Wheaties are ok and a few others. Frosted wheat is good despite the higher sugar content because it’s good fiber for you and tastes great. Only have a regular bowl size and use the skim or fat free milk.
Stick to 15 grams or less per meal and also stick to 500mg or less of salt per serving. I don’t count carbs, because if I stay within my limits of calories and fat, then the carbs are most likely low anyways and they are there to give you energy. Anything with sugar – do not eat or drink anything with more than 15 grams per serving. As far as calories go, I would not eat over 1700 and if you can’t help it, just do not exceed 2200. If you are between meals and find yourself getting hungry, gulp down some water, it will cure that. Eat fruits and vegetables... Here’s the deal about salads… they can be your friend and your enemy. Like a burger, the more stuff you put on it, the better it taste in most cases. Same with salads, but you can make an unhealthy salad. Regular dressing are bad, just look at what is in one serving and notice that one serving is one tablespoon!!! Fat free can be okay, but again with the servings, you can only really use a few spoonfuls. The best dressings for you are the ones that end in “vinaigrette”. They don’t seem like it because they appear oily, but they are because its virgin oil based and is good for you. I personally like the balsamic vinaigrette. You still have to watch the servings. The amount of salad you use should be no more than two handfuls. The best lettuce to use is romaine. The darker lettuce is, the richer it is in taste and in nutrients. If you use cheese, stay away from yellow cheese. These are high in fat. Use a whiter cheese and only use a few tablespoons of it. I advise against croutons unless they are very low in calories and fat. You can add any vegetable you want to your salad such as carrots, jalapenos, and my favorite hot banana peppers.
Keep a food/activity journal and keep track of your weight on a day to day basis. That way, when you notice more weight loss in a given time, you can look in your journal to see what you were eating and doing right. Remember that it will take time to reach your goal. The first few weeks are always the hardest and it feels like it will take forever. Now that I am three months into it, it feels like time has flown by and I feel so good about myself. I have already had to go buy new pants. If you ever feel like you hit a rut and sometimes I do, go to the gym and pick up one weight equal to the amount of the weight you have lost so far and think about how much weight that really is. Sometimes putting it into perspective is as simple as putting it in your hands. Remember that it will take time to reach your goal. The first few weeks are always the hardest and it feels like it will take forever. Weight loss is slow and will not be an overnight thing. If you are doing right, 2-3 pounds per week is great. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but do the math. If you lose 2 pounds per week only, that’s 20 pounds in 10 weeks or 40 pounds in 20. You have to stick to it and be dedicated. If you mess up one day by eating something bad or not going to the gym, don’t put yourself down. You do have to be strict, but never put yourself down. It only hurts you worse than the actual mistake. Just pick up the next day and keep moving forward. Before you know it, 3 weeks will have gone by and then 10 weeks like nothing. Take your weight in the morning and night, and write it down in your food/activity journal. If you are losing weight to get into the Army, remember to commit yourself, dedicate yourself, and always move forward. You may lose the same amount of weight I did quicker, the same, or slower than me… but, remember that it is only important that you do it period. Do it for your health and do it for your country. I am right there with you. I am only half way to my goal and it has not come easy. Now that I am half way there, I am glad it felt hard at times because I feel stronger and laugh at the thought that I even use to crave some of the things I ate. Hooah

Lisa, I love the little comics that you post. That last one about the booty shake is very cute.
I assume that MJ has a BIA scale, which sends a small harmless current throughout your body. Fat, muscle, and water respond differently to the current, and the scale uses those responses to figure out what percentage of your weight belongs to each. As with all body fat measures, there is a slight margin of error. It's not as accurate as hydrostatic testing, but is generally more accurate than body calipers. I really need to pick one up myself - even with the slight margin of error, they are great for seeing a trend over time.
Oooh...caffeine withdrawal. Sis just went through the same thing. She found it much easier by replacing her soda with green tea. It's an effective way to wean yourself off of it. The amount of caffeine in green tea is fairly low by comparison to other caffeinated beverages, so if you want to wean yourself off of caffeine altogether, it could be helpful in that regard, too.
Sounds like you're raring to go on the exercise! I've found music to make such a profound difference during exercise. If you listen to it while exercising outside, however, be careful not to lose awareness of your surroundings!
Also, be safe when cycling on major roads. Ideally, everyone who drives would yield to pedestrians as they should, but in an ideal world, big pink elephants would appear at the circus, too, and tell you to stop eating cotton candy lest you suffer their fate. Alas, such is life.
Hey, on the subject of Dave, I did exercise while playing video games for a while (indoors, of course). I had to carefully watch my pace, but it did make the time go by. Has he tried that? It would be great if you could make it a joint venture - having a workout buddy really helps.
Keep it up!

Yeah, I am hoping I am not infringing any copyright stuff with the comic posts. I think they are great. I like to add humor in my life. One of Dave's favorite sayings from a quotations book I have is: "I realize that a sense of humor isn't for everyone. It's only for people who want to have fun, enjoy life, and feel alive." - Anne Wilson Schaef
Now that I looked through the book for a bit I have found more sayings that are pretty good!
"Be good to yourself. If your don't take care of your body, where will you live?"
-Kobi Yamada
"I hated every minute of the training, but I said,"Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion." -Muhammad Ali
"You can't make footprints in the sands of time if you're sitting on your butt. And who wants to make butt prints in the sands of time?" -Bob Moawad
"Ruthlessly compete with your own best self." - The Apollo 13 Engineers
The book is called "Whatever it Takes - A journey to the heart of human Achievement" By Bob Moawad. He does consulting and speaking and he started a company called The EDGE Institute. I'll have to look into that. I have had this book for years and pick it up now and again to flip through it.
I have others too. One with quotes and essays from George Washington and a tiny reprint of a book called "Wisdom and Wit from Poor Richard's Almanack" By Benjamin Franklin.
I haven't been using my headset if I am riding my bike. If I do use it I try to turn it down low enough to be able to hear the music and my surroundings. I rely on my hearing A LOT to let me know what is going on. I am surprised how good my hearing still is with all of the construction type jobs that I have had! Then again I tried to keep ear plugs in and head sets on whenever I could! Some of my peers were far older than me, about my father's or grandfather's age. They couldn't hear if you were yelling 6 inches from their face. The sad part about it was that they were in denial of it too!
As far as the fat % goes I got to do one of those hand held electrode things at the gym when they took all of my "Pre" info down. They entered my basic information into the little machine (height, weight, age and sex) and then I had to hold onto it for a few seconds. It read off 41% body fat. If I had just entered the same info on one of these online BMI calculators it normally says about 39%. So that's close.
In regards to my attempt to get fit for the Army... I got an e-mail from the Army.com site and they asked basic info too. So I gave it to them. Then I got a response saying something to the effect of "We regret to inform you... that you are really frickin' FAT!" No, I am kidding, it was worded in a more proper form but I am being silly! They said I was 74 lbs over the minimum weight...? And here I thought I was 89 lbs over!!! Which would put me at 160 lbs. This is good.. or maybe they read what I wrote wrong. Maybe they changed the standards and did not make the chart adjustments or something...??? Dunno.
At any rate, I don't think that losing 9% fat is all that bad! But I have never been one to monitor my fat loss so I have no idea how long this will take or how hard this will be!
Oh my goodness! Female body builders are scary!

I got up early to walk to the bus stop and then took the bus out to the Habitat for Humanities Build site. The only issue was I got off the bus too soon and then headed the WRONG WAY up a VERY, VERY, VERY steep hill... more like a cliff side! The ONLY other time I have EVER seen streets like this was when I was in San Fran! The view was amazing though.... Then I headed down and UP the other side.... I found the right street that time! LOL!
From 8 am until 3 pm I helped our crew put together and erect the first set of outer walls on one of the homes. It was a ton of fun! Everyone was having a great time! There was 3 different groups there today: Women Build Team, a mixed religions group (Jewish, Muslim, Christians, etc.), and a JROTC group of teens from a local middle school. There was people there from all sorts of countries who came to America searching for the "American Dream" and others who were fleeing war, and some from right here in America who had been in tough situations and homeless before. It was certainly an amazing sight to stand back and take it all in and then realize you are one of these people!
The build site is on a culd-de-sac with about 10 or 12 houses. Of which 1 is finished and two more are nearly done. The rest of the homes only have the 1st story framing up so far.
There is radiant heat flooring (very efficient), low flow water saving toilets, and on demand hot water (so no more wasting electricity or having showers go cold!) There's much more eco-friendly stuff going into the homes and they look great. They purposefully worked with a planner to make the houses NOT look cookie cutter style. Which I think is great because most of the suburbs in this area look all the same! It's so boring!
Another plus besides all of this! The families who have been awarded the chance to purchase these homes (20 out of about 250 applicants a year, at no interest, and pay no more than 30% of their income for 30 years) are there working right beside all of us who have volunteered! So all of the residence are working together with the volunteers on their very own street! Something to surely form a safe tight-nit community between the families!
Oh yes, and I have a sun burn...

So I haven't been on here for a few days! I have been busy with house errands and trying to get some adware stuff off of my computer!
I wrote this post on my myspace page and then copied it here... (Generally I have to fix links when I do that):
So for about a month now I have been fighting with these adware type things. I had no idea what the heck they were. I installed a bazillion different programs to help rid myself of what I thought was some kinda of adware or virus... Something!
So I did a bit of research and found out that they were companies that were using this new advertising method much like popup ads but they are attaching false hyperlinks to any of the keywords they have. It's called Content Link Advertising. What happens is there is a highlighted or underscored text 'keyword' on the web pages I am browsing. When you scroll over them with your mouse arrow an ad will popup near the words. It has something to do with a downloader file that installs via the browser you are using. Apparently many get onto the pc's from Internet Explorer. But I doubt Firefox (my main browser) is immune being that it's happening like crazy to me on Firefox and I haven't used IE at all.
Here's a few pages I found:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Ezula -- http://www.whirlywiryweb.com/removeezula.htm AND http://www.pchell.com/support/toptext.shtml
Kontera -- http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=835804
Also, I was having problems when I was on my main myspace login. You know right after you login in there's your main page with your mail and edit preferences stuff? Well it kept trying to re-route me to that Lads@myspace page. It was in a bulletin I put out earlier this week.
If my computer hadn't popped up the windows that told me I was being re-routed or something was trying to install itself I wouldn't have known otherwise.
I did contact the myspace security admin guys about that but they couldn't find anything and figured I had already had something on my computer trying to auto download. I was free of it for a while after running some adware / spyware removal programs but then today it came up again.

Today I weighed myself at the Curves gym because I do not own a scale... still.
It said I had lost 2 lbs since the beginning of the month. Which looking at that in context is pretty good considering I have the next few weeks to go until the end of the fitness study! The ladies there also reminded me to think of it in other terms. One suggested that two lbs of butter is quite a lot to look at! And the other woman reminded me of other factors like what I have eaten, drank, what clothes you are wearing, and whether the body's menstrual cycle is coming up soon or not. I myself am one of those people that the two weeks prior to my fantastic "cycle" I put on around 5 to 10 lbs in water weight. I am also one of those people who does not drink enough fluids regularly but I have been working on that! I am not allowed to know my measurements until the end of the month .. sadly because I want something to look at now! lol Which is why I had decided to weigh in in the first place!
When you consider what the human body is capable of it's astounding!

Okay, so as far as I know I have lost 8 lbs since the beginning of the month. *yay* Although the last few days I have been slacking off on my diet and water intake so I have to scold myself about that!
I found a couple new websites with more information for those who want to build some muscle / core strength.

Anyway, I am feeling really lazy today so I have to get my act in gear! BLAH!
I found and printed out a list of the requirements to pass the physical fitness test and hung that up on my wall so I see it staring at me everyday. In the kitchen I have a food / diet plan hung up that was put together by Stew Smith from StewSmith.com and Military.com He's a pretty nice guy. Ex-Navy Seal turned fitness instructor. Not all of his services are free. He's got a family to take of too! But he certainly does try to help however possible! If you e-mail him with any questions he will respond!
So not that I am a nosey person or something but one of my neighbor's is outside of my window talking with a lady who was walking by. They have talked about many different things but all of the sudden I noticed he was going on and on about how many medications he is on. They woman asked if he was a diabetic and he said, "No but once in a while I have to go get tested. You know the needle prick thing..." I guess he is on blood pressure meds and various other things. He went on to tell her that he was on his way to the 7-11 down the street from here to get himself one of those Hostess Apple Pie things and he wanted to know if she would join him since they were heading the same direction. She exclaimed, "My! Isn't there a lot of sugar in those things though!?" "Oh well yeah, there is. You know I used to try to watch my carb and sugar and fat intake and all of that stuff... My doctor told me that I should do it. But, yeah, I don't. You know I like beer but I can't handle it well so I don't drink. And then if you are drinking beer you have to get the cookies, pretzels and other snacks to go along with the beer...." They walked off down the alley towards the store.
And the moral of the story? I felt like throwing one of my 120 calorie Peanut Butter Crunch Slimfast Snack bars or the 100 calorie individual serving packets of pop corn at him. SERIOUSLY!
Slightly Off Subject Story:
My great grandmother, though she was in her mid 90's, was on blood pressure medications and ghastly thin in an emaciated way. Her doctor constantly told her to lower her fatty food intake and start exercising. I SWEAR up and down that she would still be alive today if she had taken better care of herself! Not many people make it past the age of 80 eating fried foods and watching old re-runs of the "Price Is Right" all day. My great grandmother came from a different era and so when she heard her doctor tell her to put on weight and exercise she began to eat MORE fatty foods. She figured Fat would make her .. heavier. (Wrong kind of heavy grandma!) She asked us what kind of work-outs she could do. I would take her for VERY slow walks around the block (If she got her momentum up too fast she would get slanted forward like she was going to plow into the earth) and the most weight she could lift was 2 to 3 pounds. She rarely did either of these though and mostly sat in her chair waiting to die so she could go to heaven and tell my great grandfather about new technologies like cordless phones and microwave ovens.
Honeslty, she used to sit in front of the microwave and stare at it while it cooked her food all the while mumbling to herself about how, "He just won't believe it!" Mom would come in and ask, "Who won't believe what, grandma?" "Ray, he won't believe this cooker thing! Or the phone with no wires! How does it do it?!" "I don't know how it works but I do know it's not good for you to sit in front of it like that, grandma! You'll cook your face!" They would have this conversation at least once everyday. Then grandma would get angry and shuffle off.

So today a friend asked if there was anything harder than diamonds out there and I looked it up. And yes there is something out there that is harder than diamonds! In fact there's plenty.. most involving lab created, super heated and compressed material molecules called nanorods. There's all sorts of nanorods out there apparently. Between Aggregated Carbon Nanorods (harder than diamond), Silver Nanorods (harder than Gold) and Aggregated Diamond Nanorods (I didn't read that article yet...) Here's the one I found on Gold nanorods being used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer cells.
Basically the nanorods are introduced to the body and are small enough to fuse with the cancer cells. Once they are gathered around the cells the location and type of the cancer can be identified easily. Then near infrared (NIR), a low power radiation, is used to heat the gold nanorods to a melting point causing them to basically burst and destroy the cancer cells from within! (Just don't let any NIR get near the X-men's Wolverine guy though, because that would be bad....)
Here's a link to the article:

Okay! Month two of the Curves women's fitness gym work out has rolled around. Between all of my at home exercise, healthier diet and the Curves workout for 3 days a week for that first month I lost a total of 9.75 inches of overall fat loss and 6 lbs. (I put 2 lbs back on...?) I lost 2% body fat too! at this rate (hopefully no plateaus) I should be at my target body fat % by when I said I wanted to around November / December and my fat loss goal might be slowed to next spring.
I am not going to obsess over 2 lbs.... I have to keep telling myself that. Anyway the trainers were amazed and thought that I did excellent. I told them I wasn't sure how good or poorly I was doing working out but I figured their system was set up to give results to those who put forth the effort. They lowered their voices and told me that it was true and most of the women who go in to the gym DO NOT see results because they don't make the effort. Some are affraid to make the extra push because they think they will become big ugly body builder chicks! It's amazing the stigma that is out there about making sure you have healthy muscle tissues! Most old ladies I know are so frail and weak and they do not seem to get it that they need to put pressure on the muscles to keep them from atrophying. It also helps tighten the loose skin from major fat loss like seen on the "Biggest Loser" t.v. show contestants and Bariatric surgery patients.
Oh also lately Dave is showing more and more interest in joining the Air Force. He has actually been going out on walks with me and refusing to eat certain meals or large amounts of any food. He told me he was also trying extra hard to keep hydrated and to cut back on soda pops! I printed out a list of fitness requirements for the military and hung them on the wall. This made him wonder if he could even do the work outs so he tried and he could not! So now he feels compelled to challenge himself to be able to do these exercises!
I'm excited!

I have to admit I have been slacking on my diet, drinking water and getting out to walk daily. All of which I am kicking myself to get, and stay, on top of and not to let myself down or sabotage myself with.
(I also posted this on my Exercise challenge forum)
Father's day is coming up and I even though I am broke I threw together a small care package for my dad and brother who's a new daddy ! Now I just have to get to a post office. Most of the ones in my area have shut down due to the economic depression we're in. It's sort of sad to see something as old as our postal service suffering but they've been having it hard for years especially with the internet and all.
I've also been put in charge of planning our first neighborhood 4th of July party so that's been keeping me a little stressed and busy and then with trying to sell Avon products and get into the market too. For $10's (which my up line recruiter waived for me) what have you really got to lose aside from feeling down when no one contact's you for an order!
I've been doing the online training courses recently and I found out that Avon has been around since 1889!!! I don't know if I mentioned that or not in here. I told one of my friend's too because I was so surprised by it. I figured they got started in the 1950's or sooner.. maybe 1960's but I guess not!
Hey you know if anyone reads this and IS interested at checking the Avon, MARK and other products out go to my new personal Avon page at: http://www.YourAVON.com/LKARELS
And then click the "Shop now" tab for the full e-catalog.
Anyway, I'm writing too much. I hope everyone had a good day and thanks for putting up with me! :DLast edited on 16 June 2009 03:06 am by Karels.le

My neighbor and I went down to the Farmers market today (written in another forum and posted here again.):
I love meeting all of the people at the markets and hearing about how they formed their businesses. There's a family that owns goats and they make their own cheeses (fetas, creamed, rounds etc.) It tasted tasted AMAZING. (I love feta!) And a family of fishermen who had mostly Alaskan Salmon. There was a guy who sold oysters and clams. A guy with goat, lamb and beef meats. Various vegetable / plant stands (got a catnip plant for my 3 kitties... they are currently rolling around on the floor now all "stoned" and in bliss. LOL I got a huge head red leaf lettuce, fresh pork sausage, and GRASS fed beef with 5% or less fat! Oh yes and there is a doggie bakery that was there with organic doggie food and treats. The kind that you should refrigerate because it's so fresh and organic! And A local bakery that I absolutely love so much i don't mind spending 1 more $ for their breads! They fresh grind their wheat kernels or whatever EVERY DAY! Check out these ingredients for this whole wheat bread: Fresh ground wheat flour, cracked wheat, Oats, rye meal, polenta, barely, tritical, millet, rice bran, wheat germ, flax seed, sunflower seeds, wheat sprouts, water, molasses, honey, yeast, salt.
(I am assuming there is all of these ingredients not only for a more special formula / recipe but for the fact that flour and other ingredients have been on the rise and SOOO expensive lately.)
I got a loaf of white wheat bread from the last week and it only had the flour, honey, cracked wheat, yeast and water. And it tastes fantastic especially warmed in the oven and with a tiny bit of butter or jam on them.
