One day at a time, but I think that's 3 or 4 days in a row now that I've felt more in control. It's definitely still a struggle though. I had to try hard not to drool on the cinnamon rolls this morning, HA!
Now just to tackle that exercise issue . Might actually be do-able with the weather slowly improving.

I HAVEN'T POSTED IN A WEEK! Ack! That is unlike me and just proves (to myself??) that I have been busier than normal. Sadly no time this evening either to catch up with other diaries. Maybe I should put it on my to-do list?!?
I just stopped to jot down my MINI MINI MINI goals for this week.
1 - Go jogging once. I know this is pathetically small baby step, but I need to start somewhere. I think if I pick anything more ambitious I will just get frustrated if I can't do it.
2 - Eat a fruit and/or a vegetable every day. Same as above. I plan to start VERY small and ramp up slowly.
Today I ate a plum, an apple, and roasted red pepper soup. I thought about trying Javan's recipe in the Recipe forum, but that would require me to have 20 free minutes and I found a minimally-processed variety at Trader Joe's.

Hey trim,
I haven't been around in awhile so just thought I'd stop by some of the "gang's" diaries and say hi. Hope you are having a lovely March day! It has been so nice here today, great whether, makes me so anxious for spring, grilling out, long walks, cool evenings, capris and short sleeves *contented sigh* :)

HI CG!! I love grilling out, yum! I went on nice walks the last few days too... no excuses now!
Okay, I caught up on a few of the diaries.
Here to update my MINI goals:
Today I had a small sweet potato and a plum. I had other things, but I'm kinda tired of reporting everything. I'm pretty consistently around 2000 calories anyway. It's the quality that I am trying to make baby steps towards improving.... more fruits/veggies less starchy carbs and fat.

Hey I couldn't help but notice your journal title - I'm a pastry chef myself, I guess that's why it always makes it a little extra hard for us! <--- even just looking at that makes me want to make ice cream and eat it all! But nonetheless, I think you seem to be doing a great job! Keep it up

Hello kalypso! Good to hear I'm not the only one who hasn't become desensitized to the sweets.
MINI goal update re fruits & veggies:
Today I had one banana, one grapefruit, and a big bowl of roasted red pepper soup. I guess that last one is not technically a veggie - but there's not a lot else in the soup, so I think it half counts .

Hi trimb. How are you. You sound nice and positive!!
I think you can definately count red pepper soup as a portion for your veggies
Think about this disgusting thought. It all ends up as soup as it passes thru us anyway. Except maybe sweetcorn!!

OOH artistjohn, that's funny and disgusting all at once!! Thanks for stopping by my humble diary!
I am really nearing my goal weight/body fat, so I am indeed feeling positive! But I know I still have some work to do on improving my habits.
Right now I am lucky if I have formal exercise once a week. I go on walks almost every day and have an active, part time job... but I know I need more for a healthy heart and improved moods! Plus I am quite lax on the fruits, veggies, and whole grain foods. SOOOOOOOOO this explains my two mini goals for the week - focusing on the healthier foods and the exercise in a baby step type manner.
Hooray for progress!

Hi Trimb! You sound great! I made a pureed carrot & summer squash soup this week with some ginger a little curry, thyme, s&p - came out great. Your red pepper soup sounds interesting.
You keep up the great work!

I love homemade soups!! My food processor at home is really dinky though, so my experiments with homemade squash soup were very time consuming. I should have some time in the next few weeks though, so thanks for the inspiration!
I did mediocre over the weekend regarding my goals. I had a banana, an apple, and a bowl of steamed root veggies over lentils on Saturday. Sunday I had.... NO fruits or vegetables. OOPs! I only realized it this morning, and it reminds me of why I need to set these mini goals. If I don't pay attention, really healthy foods just don't make it into my diet.
Goals for this new week...
- Go jogging twice!! Maybe Tuesday and Friday.
- Eat two servings of fruits/veggies per day.
So far today I've already had a banana, a grapefruit, and a cup of squash soup. Will probably have hummus and carrots later too. My calorie totals are really helped by squeezing in the fruits adn veggies.

When people asked my specialty, I would tell them soups. they would laugh at me until they tasted them, and then they'd laugh as they asked for more! I have a well rounded repitoire that covers the entire meal ( although my cake decorating is a weak spot), but I've always loved soups. mmm comfort food.
I like the idea of mini goals. I tend to want to do it all a once and then feel defeated quickly.

Well even though my goals are mini, I am going to have to cut back on one of them just a bit. I am really struggling with the time change. I was just getting used to waking up for work at 3:30am (as much as a person possibly can). And now when the clock says 3:30 it feels like 2:30am!! I feel exhausted like I did when I worked 3rd shift in college. I actually took a nap yesterday basically in leiu of planned jog. I will still go on Friday though... can't backtrack from last week's baby step!
Still going to eat two or more servings of fruits/veggies every day. That one should be a given!
But unfortuneately does not cancel out the junk food I've been eating lately. 200-300 calories per day of junk at work in the morning. I ran out of my oatmeal for breakfast, and it has not been pretty. I'm not happy with myself.

Went running this morning and felt great! I think I will keep this Friday date with myself long term. I just need to stick with that and add one day. Then another. Then another. Until I am up to a respectable amount of exercise.
I have been doing my two or more fruits/veggies per day too.
Wednesday - a giant salad (at least two servings)
Thursday - carrots, potato, lentils with steamed root vegetables
Friday - banana, will have either lentils & veggies or carrots later

I went jogging this morning, YAY! I'm aiming for a Tuesday AND Friday committment now... but I am giving myself a few weeks to settle into the habit before I add a 3rd day. Feels great!
As far as my fruits/veggies habit, that is going reasonably well. I've maintained my two per day target and am moving up to three per day this week. I like this plan, but somehow I've still been sneaking in some junk food within my overall calorie target. Usually at work in the mornings (ie the top of a blueberry muffin that came off this morning), but weekends are spotty as well. For now I'll just stick with my three per day target and address this bad habit later.
I guess the conclusion is that I find it easier to GAIN a good habit than to LOSE a bad habit!

Thanks for checking in on me guys! I've been pre-occupied with a last minute wedding cake (finished this morning) and my newly mobile baby . EEK!! All I wanted to do last night was slice some mushrooms and saute them to make a mushroom and soy cheese wrap. But NOOOOOO time, and all I could do was grab some pre-prepped carrots and dip them in pre-made hummus. SIGH.
I have been getting my fruits/veggies in (3 per day), and I am happy about that... but I have been so scatterbrained that I haven't been logging my food. This almost surely means I've been eating over maintenance. I still rely on this to guide how much I eat. Sad but true. SO better effort tomorrow to write things down as I go. This keeps me from eating too much junk food too (which I admit I've been doing a little too much lately).
And again, on a sad note - I missed my Friday jogging date this morning. Had to finish wedding cake and BAM my 30 minutes of "free" time was over. Such is my life right now.
Oh wow this post reads like one big pity party. Well I just miss catching up on all the diaries...

Aw shucks Scoobs! That cute little bunny just brightened up my day! But I'm so hopelessly behind on all my fellow diarists that it makes me sad.
Chugging along here. Doing good on the fruits/veggies goals - still aiming for 3 per day. I'm heading towards vegetarian lately... not strictly, but meat hardly appeals to me, so I have maybe 1 or 2 items containing meat per week. I stopped eating meat for about 4 years at one point, and I'm really contemplating this again.
I've just got to work on my other mini-goal... jogging two days per week. Tuesday and Friday are my dates with myself!

Thanks MollyMoo! I did indeed keep my date with myself this morning and it felt great! The key was keeping my schedule (or to-do list) clear for the short slot that is my "me time" for the day. I'll have to do that again on Friday!
Still a little too much junk food to shed the last 4 or so pounds.

Want to remember to do updated measurements. My weight is still at 129 pounds. I'm somehow worried that my body fat went up though?!?
Date with myself for a jog tomorrow after work. Looking forward to it!

Did go jogging this morning! Really wanted to just relax, but I thought of having to report that I didn't go for no good reason... so thanks for reading and keeping me honest!!
My measurements and body fat and weight is essentially unchanged. So that's good and maybe not so good. Was really hoping to get down nearer to 125# and 20% body fat. I'm around 23% or so right now.

Well my regular jogging schedule is going to have to be interrupted this week, due to a couple of other obligations taking up that time. Thursday and Friday perhaps?? I have to work extra this week as well, so I'm a little worried! Maybe I should just aim for 1 day, ugh!
I have a teething baby today, to top it all off! Otherwise I think I would have had a bit of time to catch up on everybody's diaries...

Okay, so no excuses this week on the exercise agenda! I purposefully kept my to-do list light so that I couldn't avoid it without some major embarassment. Although I will admit the yucky weather is itself de-motivating.
As far as my eating habits go... ugh! I'm not doing worse, but I seem to still eat a couple hundred calories of junk at work every morning. I'm going to test my body fat this week and get more specific on my goals.

Went jogging this morning, instead of on Friday. Long story... but I woke up extra early to make sure to get in my "make-up" session! YAY!
I think the 2x per week is finally starting to creep in as a habit. Just in time for me to leave for a week to visit family. D'oh! So my goal is to still go jogging 2x while I am gone. I'm staying with my mom, so I should be able to have a 30-minute babysitter pretty easily.
My other goal is to keep a loose tally of calories while I am away. I might not be able to log everything as I go... being on the go most of the time. But I would at least like to keep track of an idea of how close I am to maintenance.
Bye bye for a week!

That was a nice long week away! I did keep my promise to jog my 2x during the week away. But I didn't do a very good job of limiting calories. I think I gained a solid pound.
I might be able to work it off by running around at work though! We are now short-handed and I will be working more hours. I know I literally won't be able to do anything other than work, take care of Theo, and sleep a little. Probably last a month or maybe two. Will post when I can!

How are you estimating your calories?

Love the name, Judy! Very cute.
As far as my estimating calories goes... well I've been counting calories off and on for almost 15 years. Yikes! So I feel like I have a pretty good idea of roughly how many calories are in what I'm eating. I often glance at labels to double check, sometimes weigh or measure my portions to double check myself. And every so often I actually use this site's food calories calculator to tally up more accurately. I'm usually close enough to convince myself that my estimating is still reasonably accurate.
That being said, if I ever was gaining or not losing when I thought I should be - I would go back to ACTUALLY counting instead of estimating.
Whew that was a blabfest! Okay so now I gotta run...

Hey I wasn't even on page two!! I miss my diary and everyone else too. I'm working alot, but it's just temporary. Will help me pay for car repairs and some other bills too though, so it all works out. I'm training a new person, so that always curbs my work-time munching alot.
Theo had a nasty ear infection last week, so yeah - that was fun! All better now, and I have time to get some rest and post a quick note.
Weight is maintaining at 128-129, and that is my goal for now (just to maintain). In a month or two when work hours reduce, I may be able to tackle those last few body fat percentage points!!

Not doing very well eating healthy foods. I don't think about it much, I just grab whatever I can. I am working over 60 hours a week and so is my hubby... and the rest of my waking hours is taking care of Theo. WOW! I think it will be another month of this, although maybe not quite so in the extreme.
Scale is saying 129 lately. I'm so close to goal (125-127) but so far!!!!! It doesn't seem that bad right, but body fat is about 3 percentage points higher than I would like.

Under the circumstances, maintaining at 129 is a real accomplishment. Keep hanging in there trimB. I am sure the month will go by quickly and then hopefully you will finally have some more time for yourself again.

Well at one point the scale was flirting with 127 and definitely more like 128. So not really maintaining. This morning said 129.5 and this made me a little more motivated. I think I estimated that must have meant I've been eating about 200-300 extra calories per day. That's probably true too.
I didn't do GREAT today, but it was a little better. I'm thinking about trying to use gum as a prop. I'm not a fan of gum in general, but I figure it might deter me from sticking food in my mouth while working in the kitchen all day!!

I've been away from home for a week house/pet sitting. Will be back on Monday with a new scale weight after a week of no weighing!
I guess this will give me some definite feedback as to what my current habits are accomplishing for me (ie maintenance versus gaining).

So I did weigh myself on Monday, and I had continued on my 1/2 pound per week gain trajectory. So that's back up to 129-130 after being down at 127-128. Kinda sad, since I was so close to my goal. I checked my body fat % too... and YES that seems to be fat that I gained. EWWWW!
So, Zen, how are you doing? I have about 3 minutes to spend on these forums, and that's on a good day! But I need that 3 minutes of support!!
I had what felt like a mini-breakthrough in my buddies forum... basically really admitting the fact that I am an overeater. Sure I might not look like one, but it takes everything I got to control that overeating urge. I need a breakthrough, so I hope this really is one!!

and i am at a complete and total loss. can i ask what your plan is?
hey, looki at it this way- you can control the urge. this is a good thing!
