Ok, I lost my post, I guess I will try copying it then it enter that way if it disappears I can just past and go next time.

Anyway...congratulatins on staying so on track for the last 60 days, that is really fantastic .

Can you tell me what program you are using. I tried a different one, I think the one Nir uses but it was too complicated, actaully too much info. I really like the one you are using, is it an online program?

Hiker, I think you might have missed my answer about the software because of the page turn. See previous post. My girlfriend in Florida and I started a challenge to each other 60 days ago. It has helped me a lot. She has lost over 8 lbs (and reached her goal) and I've kept at around 120.

Thanks Nancy, I did missi it . That's a good start for me, I am sure I can find something. I tired PhycisDiet and I hated it, it was far too "busy". I really like yours, I just hope all those bells and whistles haven't made it too complicted for old folks like me :dizzy:.

Been eating a lot of things with tomato sauce (think high salt) for lunch for the last 3 days---Mexican, meatballs, tomato sauce on rice. What that got me was a 2 lb gain this morning in spite of calorie counts averaging 1960 (I'm shooting for 2000 average) over the same 3 days and a 2 hour workout yesterday.

Well since my blood pressure is low anyway, I'm going to ignore this and keep going, ringing ears and all. I wonder if the ringing ears now is just the normal amount that everyone else hears. Or maybe no one else hears them? Uh oh...never thought of that.

Still plodding along. For the last week I've been craving meat. What does that mean? Been packing away a lot of those frozen precooked chicken finger things lately.

Below is a link to an article on belly fat from the Mayo Clinic. A lot of things in there surprised me. I always heard if you can pinch more than an inch around your stomach, that was fat and the only fat.  But this says there is another kind, inside, especially for older women.  Interesting.

Hi Nancy!  My inner geek is crazy facinated by your charts...it's so weird because when you just look each 10 day block it looks like there's a pretty consistent inverse relation between cals being on or above the target line and weight dipping below the target line.  Equally interesting is a cal average of 1967 kept your weight at 120.2, a cal average of 2019 kept it at 120.0 and a cal average of 2000 kept it at 120.2.  Just curious...do you change your exercise routine based around your cal intake?

Hi Suenos!  Note the scale on the weight chart only varies 4 lbs between the red lines, so even though it looks like a lot of fluctuation, it's really not, in the grand scheme of things.  I believe salt intake explains the changes in weight more than any one thing. If I were using my old spring scales where you can't see the 10ths of pounds, it would probably look pretty flat.

And my calorie counts are very approximate, always round everthing up the nearest 10 so I can add them up in my head. I don't have the patience to do all that on the computer. But even I was surprised at the averages coming out so close to what the target was.  I start out every day saying I'm going to go a little lower than 2000 calories---some days it works, some days it doesn't.

And exercise.... I've really slacked off on that. I wanted to concentrate on strength and gain a couple of pounds in muscle, but that goal has fallen by the wayside lately. Ever since I renewed membershp in the gym I've quit going. Ha!  I get in the bare minimum in cardio, unless there is a big chore to do around the house.

This maintenance thing has definitely not become second nature yet.

Been adding a lot of fat and carbs to the diet lately---ground beef and white rice! I've been frying ground beef, a whole onion, then add cooked rice and a couple servings of vegetables, all mixed up in a skillet.:yum::chewing:

Keeping calorie counts the same, but lost a pound (average over a week, not just a one-day dip).   Feel stuffed, too.  Either I can't count fats correctly, or I'm getting more exercise than I think, or maybe it's that initial "Adkins" effect some people keep talking about?  Or maybe it's a delayed reaction that will come back to haunt me next week.

I am sitting here staring at a box of Pillsbury Hot Roll Mix. Now warm yeast rolls are one of my most favorite things in the world. Why did I go and buy this? Since it wasn't :birthday_cake: or :cone: or :pizza: or chocolate, that made it OK? Ha!

The total prepared calories would be 1950, PLUS, they would have to be drenched in butter. It would be hard to make half a recipe because it has a pack of yeast included.

I should throw this out the door, but instead I'm figuring out a way to justify this.  Maybe if I ate only rolls for 24 hours I would get sick of them and never want them again (yeah, right).

Just thought I would put this foolishness in writing to embarrass myself.

It just dawned on me I can make these rolls and freeze half.  And since you have to let them warm up and rise again before cooking, I can't just pop one out of the freezer and stick it in the microwave any time.  And, since I skipped breakfast this morning it's a good day to try it.  This may be a winner after all!

You can definitaly do that. I used to buy Pillsbury frozen rolls and basically that is just what they were. I can't find them any longer and I really liked them becuse of the fact that I could cook just as many as I needed for one meal and no temptation. So go for it, if you freeze them I say no harm no foul,

Completing the tale of the yeast rolls...it worked out better than expected. Found out I didn't like them that much. Not as sweet as I remember them to be. But since I budgeted half of them into the calories for the day anyway, I made myself eat them---all at once.  And now I don't ever want any more again.   I wish it would work that way with chocolate.

Then I went outside and dug up the bulbs of some daffodils that keep popping up in the middle of the yard, put them up to dry until fall, and mowed down the tufts of grass I've been mowing around since April just so the daffodil tops could wilt properly.

These are the old fashioned small daffodils.  They are so much cuter than the new giant ones they sell.  They've probably been out there for at least 50 years, I know ever since I've owned this house.

I lead a very simple life.

I'm gradually working my way through some trigger foods, in order of least to most favorite. These are things I haven't touched since this whole thing started (~18 mos ago). Somehow just avoiding these foods altogether seems like getting an Incomplete in this course.

Today it was macaroni & cheese. I prepared a disgustingly large serving, but not so large that I couldn't keep the calories for the day at ~2000.  It seems like all these foods end up falling into one of two categories: (1) not as good as I used to think they were, or (2) still too dangerous to keep more than one or two servings in the house at once.  Mac & Cheese was definitely a (1).

Still to come are: pizza, chocolate, and ice cream. I'm guessing they will be a (2).

Funny thing, just plain old graham crackers have been the worst thing for me to overeat on so far.:pig: I think it's just because they look so harmless, come in a big box full, and are easy to "prepare."  At the store I think who in their right mind would pig out on graham crackers?

Non diet/exercise/weight related post:  Unexpected things going on here lately.  Broken tooth extracted and prep for a bridge, fender bender (my fault:sad:), sold my 1986 Ford Ranger today :crying: after many delays in coordinating the transfer.  One more year and it would have qualified for an antique license plate (only 69,500 miles).

Off to my mother's tomorrow to milk a goat  and now we have another goat limping.:nono:  I can't find anything wrong with him.  Maybe things will get back to normal Thursday and I can start to make a dent in that to-do list.:dizzy:

Saturday was a good day to do the ice cream experiment because I got in some extra exercise in the morning, started out the day low on calories (no breakfast, light late lunch), and it was hot.  When I got to the grocery store the Kroger brand frozen yogurt was so much lower in calories I just couldn't bring myself to get real ice cream.

Don't know if it was because it was store brand, or I've changed my tastes, but it didn't seem very chocolate-y and it wasn't that great. I purposely ate a lot in one setting so it wouldn't be calling my name all evening (900 calories worth!!!).

Whatever, it turned out to be a good choice because I won't be wanting any more. I'm going to tell myself no other brand/type would have been any better, so it will also be a 1 (not as good as I used to think it was).

All vegetables for dinner. Finished it Sunday (300 cals).

Total Calories:
Saturday: 2010
Sunday: 1850

Nancy, your idea of adding things slowly seems like a very worthwhile experiment. Now a non diet related question...that old Rnager you sold. Obviously it didn't get driven much, I have a Honda Pilot that mostly sits in the driveway but the roters (sp) are constinatly rusting and the brakes don't  seem to last too long either. Did you do anything special to prevent that?

As far as I know the brakes remained OK---they didn't squeal or anything?  I didn't do anything special.   But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.  I was lazy.

I *wish* now I had run the AC occasionally. The lines got filled with gunk and it ruined the compressor, and I had just got it converted about 2 years earlier.

And the battery always went dead.  If you don't run it at all and have a charger, put it on the battery occasionally, maybe once a month?

Cinnamon roll experiment:
Just made cinnamon rolls from Pillsbury hot roll mix. Cooked half of them and put the other half (pre-rise) in the freezer.  Like the frozen yogurt experiment, I decided to eat them all, one after another, to make sure they didn't call my name all day---1150 calories worth.  At first they were really good, but boy, by the last one, I decided I DON'T WANT TO EVER SEE ANOTHER CINNAMON ROLL AGAIN!!! Yuck!  Strange.

I'm taking the frozen ones to my mother tomorrow.

Surprisingly the rolls stuck until 5pm, even after going to the gym for strength in between. I expected some carb overload reaction, but no.

So here's how the day went calorie-wise:

Breakfast: 1 graham cracker (70)
Lunch: cinnamon rolls (1150)
5pm: one pre-cooked frozen chicken fritter thing (120)
Late night dinner:  all mixed together in a frying pan, gigantic plate full of stuff (630):

3 oz ground beef      (240)
1/4 c (uncooked) rice (160)
1 onion               ( 30)
2/3 cup of green peas (100)
butter                (100)

Total calories: 1970.     Whew, just made it under 2000!!

Bought one of those home cholesterol test kits (2 tests) just out of curiosity and because I hate going to the doctor. The first day it said ~145 and the second day ~155. The first day I had eaten 2 chicken thighs (with skin). Maybe I should eat more fried chicken.  They are supposed to be 95% accurate, whatever that means.  I know you are supposed to read both good and bad cholesterol, but I'm going to pretend the breakdown is good, too.

Last time at the Dr's office it was 230, maybe 3 yrs ago.  He said, "Don't worry about it, just watch your diet." I weighed probably 30 lbs more, didn't exercise and didn't eat any vegetables.  Do you suppose 30 pounds could make that much difference?  I'm not really exercising that much or eating that much better lately, although have added a lot of fruit and vegetables on most days.

I suppose I'll have to go get it done professionally now just to compare, otherwise it will bug me.

Nancy, that is great about your cholesterol, I don't know if 30 pounds could make a big difference. My belief is that heredity has  a lot to do with it. I have a friend who is not a pound overweight, she is very careful about what she eats and without meds her cholesterol is really high. On the other hand my mother was 100 pounds overweight, hate bacon and eggs every day. Most days had grilled cheese for lunch and at dinner any vegetables were smothered in butter, and fatty meat was her favorite. Her cholesterol was right on. So based n what I've seen I think you can alter it a little but it is what it is. I knnow mine hasn't changed much. But who knows, I sure in heck am not a doctor. I say if yours is good just enjoy it.

Yes Hiker, I don't think either of my parents ever had cholesterol above 230, and both always had normal to low blood pressure.   But if this kit is correct the drop has to be explained at least partially by weight loss and cardio exercise.  My diet is not that great lately.

So they had ice cream sandwiches on sale (49c) at Kangaroo and I bought one (along with my diet coke:devil:).  Now there's something that is definitely dangerous. If I had a whole freezer full of those they would be gone instantly. Just as good as I remember them as a kid, but much smaller, and it isn't just because I was smaller, either.

Heck they've even reduced a gallon of paint now to 37/8 quarts.  But the coverage on the label hasn't changed (still written in terms of gallons). I'd rather they just raise the price. This is one of my pet peeves.

Another month. Time is flying by this summer.

Weight for the last 5 months:

TMI: The period from approx day 128 to present has been crazy wild due to stomach problems. It seems almost like there is some food I'm intolerant to. No other symptoms so I think that rules out virus, and duration tends to rule out bacteria. But I can't isolate the food. The only thing common throughout the period was rice, but that seems very unlikely. Mostly only young kids are intolerant to rice. Maybe it's a coincidental combination of intolerance to something and getting hold of some bad food at a restaurant. I also don't know how, or if, this affects calorie absorption.

Calories for the last 5 months:

The calories yesterday (2950) need some explaining. First, I think 120 is a good weight for me, probably 125 would be better, but I'm afraid if I put on 5 lbs it will all go in my stomach. Anyway the weight trend has been gradually downward according to the Physicdiet.com trend line, although not as dramatic as the scale makes it appear (only about a pound actually):

Worked very hard for 3 hours digging and shoveling Sunday and felt unusually hungry yesterday, so I decided to try some correction all in one day rather than gradually. This wasn't much of a struggle to accomplish, BTW.  I figure it would amount to only approximately a 1/4 pound gain. I hope.... Weight was up one pound this morning from yesterday, but I woke up thirsty, so that probably means salt.

Will get back to normal routine today and see what happens.

Hiker, if you are reading this, you do not want any goats (well maybe 2 would be ok, but not 12:wink:).

Sunday I decided to give copper supplements to 4 of our goats.  First time experience. Their coats were getting rough and wiry and the black one's hair is curling and turning brown--typical signs. These supplements come as little copper rods, varying in lengths up to 1/4 in, and packed into a thumb-sized dissolving medicine capsule. You poke this thing down the back of the goat's throat with a "gun" thing, because the goat must swallow it whole, no crunching of copper rods with teeth is allowed.:chewing::nono::shock:  The rods lodge in the stomach lining and gradually dissolve over a 3 month period (I kid you not!).

It never ceases to amaze me what folks have to do on a farm, so I just had to write about this. I learn something new every day. A whole other world exists from the one I lived in before these goats.
Maybe there will be time enough to learn yet another life after the goats are gone.

Anyway it was good exercise. Try to hold the head of a 180 lb goat still while you shove a rod with a pill on the end down it's throat.Adrenalin surge alone ought to burn a few extra calories. Since none of them have died yet from forcing metal wires in their bodies, I'll probably do the rest of them in the next week or two.

Holy cow...or should I say holy goat! That method of pill giving sounds really different I'll say that for it. Just look at the goats as an exercise machine...the help you get lots of exercise in...more than you think I bet .

Thanks for the comments, guys.:rose:

Reporting back that 8 days after feeding my goats copper wires, their old rough hair is falling out in gobs. What's left is decent looking, but still old, hair.   Can't wait to see if the new hair that grows back looks any better. Their hooves are supposed to improve too, but that will take months to see.

However this is only happening to our white goats (a different breed than our brown and black ones). We've treated 8 out of 12, because the other 4 look fine, so I think I'll wait and see, in case this might be a breed-specific problem.

Had two individual sized pizzas (home cooked, totaling 820 cals) for lunch Saturday.  They weren't that great.  Now of course take out pizza is much better, but since I'm too impatient to wait for take out, and too cheap anyway, take-out will seldom happen.

So far the only dangerous food has been ice cream sandwiches. It's not so much that I've developed a taste for healthy foods, as I've just lost a taste for most any foods. I seem to have replaced snacking with drinking sugar free drinks.   I hope this lasts.

Simple things like wheat thins, cheese and crackers, rolls or biscuits with butter, etc, are more of a challenge. They seem harmless, then creep up on you when you're not looking.

Hi Nancy, I hope this finds you doing well. I not been checking in for a while but when I did I couldn't find your diary entry and panicked....thinking you given up your diary... then I scrolled way down and found it. Hope all is well with you, your mum and goats. My niece has just got some goats she lives in Nova Scotia and they're keeping her busy she keeps everyone up to date on her progress. She's having some fun and games learning how to milk them!!!

How's the exercise and diet going?

blue = actual values
green = target daily calories (2000)
red = target outer limits

green = target weight (120)

The graphs are getting too wide so I'll have to start over with a new graph if I keep doing this.  I'm definitely going to keep counting calories, just not sure about the graphs.

Hi Nancy, thanks for stopping by my diary, it was great to hear from you.

So how goes the maintenance challenge? I know it's tough but you seem to really have this under control. I am trying to emulate you, although not being terribly successful . it's great to see your still here, I guess that's part of your success.

I've not been writing in this diary for a while because nothing has changed diet or weight wise until recently. When the time changed back to EST I decided to try to go to bed earlier. Well I got into a habit of waking up in the middle of the night moseying down to the kitchen and snacking. So there is a gain of about 2 lbs before I got out of that habit. I know 2 lbs isn't much, but at least it's something to write about. Going to get back on track. Got to nip things like this in the bud.

This seems doable forever as long as I count calories. Keeping track on paper. No details, only calories and only approximations, use overestimates rather than look stuff up most times. It takes 5 minutes out of the day at most. I don't think it's the numbers so much as the fact that counting keeps you aware of what you're eating and on guard against overeating. I know I'm lucky because my maintenance level appears to be 2000 calories. Don't really understand why. I know many people my age (i.e., old) whose maintenance calories are around 1300. That would be tough. I'll probably be there one day.

More later....

Food has been gradually drifting away from healthy stuff toward more and more junk the last two weeks, :pig: and the weight is drifting up gradually because the calorie counts have been higher ().

Think I'll join the last month of the current Challenge in hopes it will knock me back into reality before this gets to be a habit.

All the tasty food is gone as of tonight.  Got to go shopping and load up on vegetables again.

December 1st:

Morning weight 121.2

Up to 2:00 pm: Grapefruit juice (40), 10 peanuts (40), rice (200), green peas (100), onion (10), tomato juice (30), pinto beans (80), butter(100): 600

Afternoon: veg. soup (120), oyster crackers (40), chicken (200): 360

Evening: banana (100), salad with dressing & grated cheese & peas (290): 390

Then things went bad. Found some old frosted mini-wheats in the pantry and ate 400 calories worth of those with coffee. It doesn't take many. Now for sure everything tempting is gone from the house.

December 2nd:

Morning weight 120.6. This drop is not meaningful. It's because I didn't eat late the night before.

I'm finding it hard to cut down even a little. For those of you who think maintenance is harder than losing, I don't think so.

Up through 2:00 pm: Banana (100), biscuits (360), stew (150) : 610

Afternoon: Various crackers (240), ham sandwich (340): 580

Evening: Salad with dressing, grated cheese & peas (250), rice (150), mixed vegs (60), butter (50): 510

Total: 1700 calories :nono:

A deficit of 200 calories/day should get me to the challenge goal by Dec 31st, so this is OK, but I wanted to go a little faster than this.

Spent the day at my mom's. Not good choices of food today, but got lot's of exercise for a change. Hopefully I can make better choices tomorrow.

Hi zas! Sure, please join in.

I guess you could say the exercise challenge is still on, because some folks are just posting what they do occasionally, more like a discussion group. We've stopped keeping the charts for now.

Maybe we can start back up after the holidays. Myself, I've not been doing enough lately to even bother to mention, but that has got to change, cause I can tell a difference.

Would you believe, on Dec 1st I got an email notification of a reply to a topic here that was posted on June 27th.  Some other features do odd things sometimes, maybe because of IE8.  Anyway I've not been keeping up with all the threads like I should.  I'm sorry.

Hi zas!:rose:

December 5th

Morning weight 119.6

Hmmm.... Does this mean I didn't really weigh 123 ten days ago, or 122 only a week ago? Calorie deficit says I should have only lost 1/3 pound since then. Maybe not as much salt as usual? Decided to go back up in calories today and eat late in the evening to see what happens tomorrow morning.  (Not a difficult decision, BTW:wink:)

Day: Sip of grapefruit juice (30), pork steaks (500), carrots (80), corn (80), potato (130), butter (50), 3 cookies (180), sf pudding & coolwhip (160)

Evening: 2 sm oranges (150), 16 pretzels (110), rice (200), mixed vegs (90), tomato juice, onions (40), butter (160), 2 pecans (20)

Total: 1970 calories

Always drop a pound or so when the weather turns cold. Only 22 degrees here this morning and the heat pump is struggling to keep the house warm. I'll go back up on calories to maintenance level for a couple of days and see what happens when it warms up a bit.

December 7th
 Morning weight:  119.4
 Total calories:  1980

December 8th
 Morning weight: 120.8
 Total calories: 2000

December 9th
 Morning weight: 121.0
 Total calories: 2060

Had a sweet tooth today so the calories are high. Volume of food was low though, so don't expect to see any gain tomorrow, but who knows? Back on track tomorrow, hopefully.

December 10th
 Morning weight: 120.4
 Total calories: 1950

Since the weight went back down there wasn't as much incentive to cut back, so I didn't.

A 2.2 lb gain? Looking back there were a few salty things yesterday but not that many. This is really going to throw my average off for the week. Got to get back on track today.
