Well done coach. I seem to have got my head round the all or none issue a day at a time.
We deserve a treat every now and again.

Wow, it has been like a year since I have been on and posted. Life is going very well. The kids and wife are doing great and I am really enjoying my life more than I have in a long time. My weight however is right back where it was when I started on here two and half years ago. It is funny to see that some of the same people are posting regularly but there are also alot who have gone away. I am realizing that having a support system and some accountability is a real positive for me.
The one thing in my life that I can't seem to get control of is my weight. It has been a battle for many years and once again I am going to try and beat it down. I am back on the healthy band wagon since I hate thinking of it as a diet. I know it needs to be a lifestyle change. School has started and I am trying to use that change in my routine to get healthier and lose some fat. I lead a pretty active lifestyle so with some changes in my diet and some dedication to getting more cardio I am going to work on getting healthier. The most success I have had in my weight loss attempts was when I posted and stayed in touch with my CPH friends!!! Sorry for being gone so long and not staying in touch...

Hey Pat Thanks for stopping by ...it is really good to hear from you :)
This week has been really good. Yesterday was very interesting for me. I had a good breakfast and lunch and then left mid-day to play a golf course about an hour out of town. Passed on the beer and hot dogs at the course and drank my water. However when we got done playing everyone was starved and I was driving. The guys I was with wanted Burger King (Which use to be one of my favorites). I had one whopper and a bottle of water. No fries, no soda. This was a huge victory for me, not because a whopper is healthy but it was a huge improvement over what I would have done not too long ago. I am trying to keep my all or nothing mentality in check and do something I can live with long term. I did have some chips and home made salsa at home but nothing drastic. I have not had a soda or anything other than water since Sunday but that will change with a few beers tonight. Just don't want to drink empty calories during the week. Just trying to make the unhealthy things I enjoy the exception and not the rule!!!
So I forgot to include some vital stats. Starting weight on Monday was 273 lbs so I have lots of room for improvement. The other vital piece of information is that I am no longer Coaching. This is a huge change for me but one I felt was vital and required from a health standpoint as well as for my family. The huge time committment took a toll on my weight every winter. The crazy hours and tons of stress for limited reward and almost no pay were tough to deal with. The final straw for me was when my 6 year old wrote me a note on her chalkboard and left it in the hallway where I would see it when I came in late at night after a game and asked me if I still loved her and that she missed me because she never got to see me any more. That is tough pill to swallow as a father. So I made some pretty drastic changes that hopefully will make me happier and healthier. Anyway more on that later. Have a great day... Coach K

Coach.............yay for you, for putting your health and your family first. You can never get back those moments with your children, that you miss or lose out on. Let them all know you love them and want to spend time with them! Stress is a big factor in weight loss or lack of it..........or putting it back on. I know from experience! Way to go, Coach!

Thanks Pat!!! I appreciate your support. It has been great for the family so far and I am hoping it will be great for my health too.
The good news is I am down 4.5 lbs the first week. It always comes off easy the first couple of weeks but I am still very happy to be on the right road. I will write more details tomorrow when I have more time

Okay Tuesday Sept. 7, 6:45 am
Weekend was really good. I enjoyed seeing my sister and bro-in-law from Colorado even though I always eat too much on these holiday weekends. Friday night went to our HS football game and enjoyed some chicken fingers and beers afterward. Trying to maintain some balance and not get caught up in such an all or nothing mentality like I have done in the past. Sadly within a few hours of drinking my 3 beers I got a terrible head ache so home to bed I went.
Saturday was a good day and I started with 30 mins on the elliptical and then an hour lifting with my trainer. It was a great start to my day. After working out it was straight to Soccer practice with the 4 year old... (Interesting to say the least). Then the pleasure of a little house work and a nice nap. Dinner was with the whole family at Carrabba's and of course I ate too much but only had one beer and tried to stay with in the bounds of sanity.
Sunday was great as I got up early and played 18 holes of golf with a couple of friends and then drove about an hour to play another 18 holes with some other friends. It was alot of fun. My back got a little tight during the hour drive but nothing serious. I have been wearing a bodybugg which has a pedometer and monitors how many calories you burn throughout the day. The two rounds of golf even with a cart proved to be great exercise as I took over 18,000 steps for the day and burned almost 4,500 cals for the day.
Monday was pretty calm and I did 30 mins on the elliptical in the morning and then ate good breakfast and lunch before taco night at my mother's with the family. Probably ate too much again but drank water and didn't go crazy like I would have before.
The biggest difference between now and what I have been doing before is more regular exercise. I have cut out all sodas even diet and have been packing a healthy lunch to go with a good breakfast on school days. Long term it will pay off. I am going to start logging all the food I eat throughout the day just to keep a handle on exactly what I am eating. Overall I am really happy with my first week back... Coach K

Hi Coach, just wanted to drop in and read a bit of your diary. That BodyBugg thing sounds very cool and I have wanted to get one for a while. I just got a new, pretty cushy, very well-paying job so I might as well splurge and get one--I think they run about what $200??
If you walk when you play golf and don't use a golf cart, then you can burn a lot of nice calories playing, plus get some good exercise using your actual swings and plenty of Vitamin D from the sun. Oh yeah, and if you don't use a caddy, hauling around all your own stuff is a good workout too! I had a friend when I was in my early 20s who LOVED golf, which you usually don't think of as a game that 20-somethings like, but he was really into it. And he had a pretty nice physique!
Regular exercise really makes a big difference, not just calorie-wise, and of course that helps, but I really think that when you are exercising, it can change your mindset so that you are less likely to pig out (LESS likely, not NOT AT ALL likely!) I have noticed that when I exercise more, I feel healthier and more in tune with my body so I want to make healthier eating choices more often. Not all the time of course, but there is a significant difference than if I am not exercising.

Wed. Sept 8 7:35 am...
Tera thanks for stopping by. The bodybugg is very cool and the I find the computer program that comes with it on Apex Fitness. com is very helpful as well. When I know what I burn and what I eat then my deficit is easy to figure. Really takes the guesswork out of it. It is nice to know how much I move each day as well. Well worth the money in my opinion.
Yesterday was another good day. I lifted with my trainer for an hour and then did 30 mins on the elliptical. I really think I could go longer but since I am losing weight right now I will just keep doing what I am doing cause I know I will hit the wall soon and then I can up my times to get me over the hump. At least that is my theory. The best part is I am back to exercising regularly which is the most important thing for me
The biggest struggle I have is the evening. From 6 - 9:30 at night I just want to graze on whatever I can find. Even after a good dinner I want some snacks. Last night after doing great all day I snacked on the kids Cheez Its (1.5 servings) 4 mini Mr. Goodbars and 1 sugar wafer cookie... I usually don't go for the sweets but last night they were calling my name. I know after a really good day this doesn't kill me but I don't want to get in that routine. I also got a terrible headache yesterday afternoon. It felt like a hangover or caffeine headache so I took 2 asprin with a sugar free red bull and my headache went away. I think it was the caffeine. I quit drinking all soda a week and half ago so maybe this is related to that. I don't drink red bull very often so having one is not the end of the world in my opinion. Still just kinda feeling my way along here. Knowing I am going to have some slip ups but just trying to keep doing the best I can and not worry about the little things .... Coach K

Okay yesterday was a huge failure. I was suppose to go workout in the afternoon and decided to wait till tomorrow evening. Then I didn't go at all. I can't believe I am into week two and already skipping workouts. Then to top it off I went to the all u can eat sushi place which rocks. I probably had a little too much but overall I was pretty healthy. My next OMG moment was when I opened the kids BBQ lays chips and ate about half the bag in front of the TV last night. Overall just a #%@&! health day.
Good news is I am now over it and can't do anything about yesterday so I will move forward. Scheduled to lift and cardio this afternoon. Need to make up for yesterday. Hopefully better report tomorrow !!! Coach

It's the late night eating that gets me too! It's definitely my biggest challenge. During the day I am cool but once I get home, showered, unwind, chill in front of the TV, there it goes! My little feet padding off into the kitchen in search of food!
I have tried chewing gum sometimes that works, brushing my teeth doesn't work, I don't know! I should do some research on what people suggest for breaking that habit/desire of the late evening eating. It's a killer!

Thanks Tera for the post. Nights have always been my problem. Once I go to bed I am fine till morning it is just getting there that is the problem. Let me know if you find a solution. I guess I could go to bed 30 mins after dinner
Yesterday was much, much better. I lifted for an hour and did a half hour on the elliptical on top of that. It felt great. Food was also a huge improvement. I did eat a few Munchos last night that my mom-in-law brought to me all the way from Indiana. I hated to tell her you can buy them in our store here...LOL. Overall it was a quality day and it was a good recovery from the debacle on Wednesday Coach

My husband (Fire Man Joe) also struggles with snacking at night and our kids are in the habit of it too, so that makes it kind of hard, especially when the kids are eating ice cream.
I think it helps to plan ahead some healthier snacks that you like, that are lower in calories. If you plan your late night treats, at least it provides some kind of damage control.
If it's salty things you crave, you could try those 100 calorie packs of popcorn or nuts and a slice of cheese.
If it's sweet, you could try some fruit.
One of my favorite evening snacks is fresh berries with greek yogurt on top.

Thanks for stopping by and the ideas Sassycat!!! All help is appreciated. So the weekend was alot of fun but rough health wise. I ate out Friday and Saturday night (All-u-can eat Sushi, and Mexican)... Last night was homemade pizza at my mom's house. So my cals were way high and not with the healthiest of choices. But I am trying hard to keep everything balanced and not go with the all or none mentallity. I did move alot over the weekend and did the elliptical both Friday and Saturday and that really saved me.
The good news is despite the poor eating choices over the weekend I still lost .5 lb for the week. I had hoped for more but after 4.5 last week another .5 lb is good. I will be glad to have a loss. I am already thinking ahead and I am gonna have another hard weekend coming up this week cause I am going Antelope hunting with a group of buddies. I will try to keep the alcohol to a minimum and not eat too bad. Right now I am focused on having a great week till then both with my food and exercise. Coach

Hey man .5 lbs is still a loss, as for me I am always happy as long as the scale is going down, even if it's only a little bit each week. Hunting seems like you'd get a lot of exercise? Or is it a lot of waiting? Well, at least you're outside in the fresh air! That's definitely better than sitting at a desk/on the couch!

Coach, I have the same problems on the weekends. I totally ruin what I did all week over the weekends. I need to get back into the habit of planning ahead and taking healthy foods with me again when traveling. It so hard when your with friends having fun. You just want to eat what they are. Anyway, it's good that you are thinking ahead for the coming weekend. I need to do the same thing.

Hey Tera and Cindy thanks for coming by... Weekends are the hardest times for me to be good but I just try to do my best right now and keep on moving.
The hunting trip was AWESOME ... I got in a ton of walking and it wasn't even like exercise cause you don't even realize what your doing till after your done and totally exhausted from all the effort. We were stalk hunting on foot most of the time so there was lots and lots of walking and crawling. I did get an antelope as well so that means I have about 30 lbs of lean healthy meat to eat. Wish it was more but I am happy to have some really healthy stuff in the freezer!!!
On the trip I did not eat great because I ate whatever I wanted. But I tried to be smart with my portions and not be a total pig. I also drank alot of water and limited the alcohol to almost none. I was not home yesterday so I did my weigh in today and lost 2 lbs. from last week... Yea It is really nice to go out of town and still lose weight. I am back to healthy eating today and just drinking lots of water. Think I am going to make some Antelope Chili tonight ... Coach

That's nice that you had a good time hunting and were able to move a lot and lose some weight, plus get wild game to eat. I have heard that wild game is definitely the healthiest to eat.

Tera thanks for the post. I really like wild game and it is really good. Lean and has a great flavor. Because there is not much fat in it you have to be careful not to overcook it because it dries out pretty easily. It is nice to eat something delicious and know it is good for you too !!!
Yesterday was another good day. My weekdays have been pretty good here lately. The routine of school and always eating a good breakfast and lunch really helps. Not too much snack food last night after dinner which was really good. Still tired from the trip but starting to recover. I did lift with my trainer for a hard hour yesterday and then did a half hour on the elliptical so it was also a great exercise day for me. I am planning on trying to do at least 45 mins. today on the elliptical after school. One day at a time is all I can do right now. Have a great day ... Coach

Well Wednesday turned out to be a lazy day and I did not go in and cardio like I was planning. I took a two hour nap instead. Normally I would have beat myself up over that one but I have decided that is not a good thing either so I am just moving forward and trying to do better.
Yesterday was really good. Lifted hard for about an hour and then spent 40 mins. on the elliptical. That was a really good workout for me and I am a little sore today and the back was a little stiff last night. I feel pretty good though and I am starting to enjoy my exercise a little more.
I saw a guy running this morning on the way to work and realized I would like to get to the point where I can do that again without all the pain and suffering. Right now the pounding is too much for my knees and back but I know if I keep after this I will get there. I am actually having thoughts of doing road races again. Nothing that I try to win of course, just going and being a part and getting some exercise. We will see how things go. For now I just need to get this first 20 lbs off so I can eliminate some of the stress on my bad knee and back.
Food has been pretty good this week. Course the week end is coming and that will be harder but I am gonna do my best and not beat myself up over anything. Hope everyone has a great day and be healthy ... Coach

The good news is I really enjoyed my weekend... The bad news was I did not eat good. For the week I gained 3.5 lbs. Sadly I am not shocked. I did get 3 one hour lifting sessions in last week and I did 3 cardio workouts on the elliptical for 30-40 mins. each. That is just not enough and it showed. I feel better and I know my clothes are fitting better but I need to do more. Fighting that battle between keeping balance in my life and going overboard and then not being able to maintain it ... Nothing says this has to happen overnight so I am trying not to panic. I really am trying to think of this as a long term deal. I think about losing weight all day long and I wish I could get over dwelling on it so much. Anyway that is my update, have a good day... Coach

Okay yesterday was good on the exercise front as I did 50 mins. on the elliptical in the afternoon. I was really happy with that as it was not a lifting day and I still went and worked out. Food was better but I missed breakfast completely and I hate that. It was just one of those mornings. (Forgot to set the alarm, rush to work, etc.) I ate good for lunch and dinner was a little high in fat but not stupid. Today should be a great workout day with my trainer so I am looking forward to that. Anyway I will keep you posted. Coach

| Wednesday am... Yesterday was a decent day. It was the second day in a row of working out pretty hard and that felt good (especially when it was over). Food was not too bad at all. I had a 6 in whole wheat low fat ham sandwich for breakfast and lunch. (Half for each meal) then I had some baked tostitos w/ salsa and an antelope brat (very lean :)) then last night I had some antelope chili with onions and extra tomatoes. I know I need to incorporate more fruits and veggies but for now one step at a time and I didn't eat a ton of cals so it is an improvement. I am really trying to focus on my exercise first and then I will try to get my eating habits even better. My head is in a pretty good place right now and I am trying to enjoy the journey !!! Coach

That's what it's all about is enjoying the journey. That actually reminds me of something I heard a while back at this concert I went to. My friend took me to a Cyndi Lauper concert maybe a month and a half ago. (I am not the biggest fan of hers, but I figured why the heck not, it should be a fun evening). Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Ms. Lauper now actually sings the blues--and she's a very good blues singer and songwriter; I mean, her blues stuff was VERY good, very soulful and sounded, well, just like great blues music!
She talked here and there between her sets and she was talking about how when she was very popular in the 80s, she thought that was the pinnacle of her life and then later when she was able to meet BB King, she thought that was the pinnacle of her life. Then she said that she had come to realize that there is no pinnacle of life--your whole life is the pinnacle of your life--the whole entire journey in all of its meanderings, is the pinnacle of itself, is The Big Deal. I thought that was really cool! That woman knows how to be pretty profound.

Thanks for the post Tera... Interesting about Cyndi Lauper as I did listen to her in the 80's. I like the message as well.
Yesterday was about as good a day as I have had with both exercise and food in a while. When I got out of school I went and played nine holes of golf. It was cart path only meaning I got in lots of extra walking !!! When I got done I would normally have gone and gotten a beer and that would have been it for the night. But yesterday I went home and changed and went and did 40 mins. on the elliptical. Then took the dog on a walk last night as well. I was really proud of myself for going to work out as it is my 3rd straight and not something I would normally do. Combine that with my good breakfast and lunch along with leftover Antelope Chili and I was Rock Star for a day :))
I have a workout with my trainer today and will cardio as well so that will be 4 days in a row. I am a little stiff but not bad. Last night I had trouble getting off the couch. Looking forward to a great day and just trying to get as much out of each day as I can... Coach

Hi Coach Inspiring stuff
To carry on the tera/cindy theme, I like this one;
"Today is the tomorrow that I was worried about yesterday and all is well"
Have a good day and I sincerely hope you get a thrashing in the Samuel Ryder Cup

John, Thanks for the post and I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to the Ryder Cup. I know we have everything going against us (Rookies, Location, Tiger Sucks Now, etc.) but I am still hoping we lay an old fashion butt whoppin' on you Euro's If nothing else it will be fun to talk about. By the way I was down to under an 8 handicap at the end of the summer.
Okay back to the real stuff, yesterday was day 4 in a row for a good workout. I did an hour and half yesterday including 30 mins on the elliptical. Haven't done that in some time and it really feels good. Today is not suppose to be a workout day based on schedule but I almost want to get one in just to keep my streak alive ... We will see how the day plays out. Food was good again yesterday. Had my sandwich (half for breakfast and half for early lunch) then had a baked potatoe with a little no cal butter spray, green onions and a little cheese. I also grilled some turkey smoked sausages and they were pretty good. I was surprised they were like half the cals and fat of a normal sausage, only 110 cals and 60 fat cals per link. I thought that was pretty good. (Of course the way my mind works I thought Gee I could eat all 6 in the package and only get 660 cals!!! Pretty sick LOL) I only ate two... Of course the wife did make hot choc chip cookies and I had 3 little cookies with a glass of cold 2% milk. Why does the bad stuff taste so good? Overall another good day and I look forward to my next weigh in. Have a great weekend...Coach

John- Congrats, it was exciting but you guys pulled it out. I really enjoy watching that more than any other type of golf.
Weekend was good. I made jambalya yesterday in the crockpot and it was tasty. Really healthy too. Made it with brown rice and low sodium broth. Turned out good. I am still sore especially my groin muscles from squats in Saturday's workout. Last week was my best workout week in a long time and know I want to do it again this week ... Hopefully I will be as determined.
Weigh in was good and lost 4.5 lbs last week, of course I had gained 3.5 lbs the week before so we will just keep on plugging. So far so good. I am at about the lowest weight I have been at all year so that is good. Coach

John-The biggest problem with the weather was the delays which made it so I couldn't see alot of it... bad timing for me between work and schedule. I saw all the highlights last night and it was one of the best Ryder Cups in a long time. I am sure you enjoyed it a little more since your lowly Euro team won. I guess everyone else against the Americans is the only fair way ...
Yesterday was good again. I did 40 mins on the eliptical and then about 45 mins resistance training. My exercise has been really good of late and I know that is making a huge difference in how I feel. I am going to try and do an hour tonight on the elliptical so that would be the longest I will have gone yet so hopefully I can do it. Food was good yesterday and ate leftover Chicken Jambalaya for supper along with two fresh baked choc chip cookies. I wish the wife would quit making those ...They are like crack!!! Not that I actually know what crack is like but you get the idea. Anyway right now my head is in a good place and I am just trying to make some the good things I am doing my new life long habits ... Yesterday was great on the exercise front...I went and did one hour straight on the elliptical machine!!! It has been at least year or two since that has happened. My back tightened up pretty good but I got it done ... I can't see any changes in my body (doesn't mean there isn't any) but I feel a ton better. I have more energy and just feel better.
Food was great yesterday and overall I need about 6 months of days like yesterday and I will be where I want to go Hopefully today will be great as well. Take care...Coach

Okay I have been away for a few days...Life has been a little busy. Things are still going well. I weighed in this morning at 263.0 lbs. which is a loss of 10 lbs total so far. My biggest change has been more exercise. I have been working out regularly and I feel so much better. I am heading out of town for the weekend to do some deer hunting so that should be lots of fun. I will write more next week after I get back. Just didn't want everyone to think I was out long term again. Have a great weekend ...Coach
