Dear Diary:
I started this challenge to myself at the beginning of this year. Starting at 199 lbs. Hope to find lots of encouragement from the posts and success of others. One feels so alone sometimes.
You know that old song "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen" or something like that.
Today so far so good. Usual breakfast. Lunch was home made veggie soup, ham sandwich and 1/2 an apple.
I am on my way...Yaaaaa.
I don't like the idea of writing down everything I eat, makes me think about food too much. So kind of do the 1, 2, 3 thing at every meal. l starch, 1 milk, 1 fruit or combination of , but never more than 3 things with carbs at any meal.
Guess that's good for a start.

HI Maggie!
Welcome to and the forums! Glad to have you here.
I know what you mean about writing things down............but I have always found that I do best at weight loss when I do write down what I put in my mouth!
So, if you aren't seeing the progress you'd like doing it your way, don't rule it out If you need any more information, this site it loaded with it! Enjoy and here's to your success!

Thanks Angel44 for stopping by and for the nice welcome. I am learning my way around a bit. I did notice you on the New Year Challenge. Good luck to you.
Things went well today. 30 minute workout this morning and a 20 minute walk outside this afternoon. Stayed on my meal plan. Giving myself a for today. Guess that is kind of childish but hey anything for encouragement.

| Hi and welcome! This is a great site and I think you'll find it a big help in your weight loss goals. I hear you on the not liking to write everything down! But, I have to admit that I had to do it in some form or another for pretty much all of my weight loss and have done it sporadically throughout my maint. as well...but I totally believe that the only way to keep the weight off is losing it in a way that feels "right" for you as an individual...so if not recording your food works for you than go with it. Like Hisgal says, you can always try it later if you need to. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your progress in 2008.

Dear Diary:
Thanks Hisgal and Sueno for stoping by and offering encouragement and welcome. Sorry Hisgal for making the mistake of calling you Angel40.
I have been doing some checking on the site and my BMI is 34.9 and body fat if I calculated correctly is 50%.....Wow....now that has to change. At least my BMI is on the bottom half of obese. New Goal: I want to get to just overweight and not obese. Just hate that word Obese. Have no idea how many lbs. that would be.
Seems I should write everything down and I do in a way. I have a meal plan given to me by a diatitian and it is pasted on my fridge door. I will start writing down everything I eat that is not on that meal plan.
So far today usual breakfast never changes day to day. Same with morning snack. So it's from lunch time on I must be more vigilant. 30 minute workout done this morning. Everytime I do a walk or workout I put a heart on my calendar.

Thanks Sheltie mom for the encouragement. I know how to do it....getting it done is something else.
Dear Diary
Yesterday went well, followed meal plan except ate all the nuts out of the poppycock and then threw the rest away. 1 slice of bran bread. Did not get my afternoon walk in as had company and same in the evening. OH well... jump in today where I am at.
Regular brf and 30 minute work out done. Amazed at how many in the Jan, Feb Challenge and how well we all did. What a great group we are. Yes!! we all can do it. Me too.

Good Morning Diary and anyone reading.
Yesterday went well. workout in morning and 30 minute walk in afternoon. Lovely walk with the snow sparkling like diamonds and snow going crunch with every step. I love that sound.
Jan 10, and I have lost the 3 lbs. gained over Christmas just as I said I would. Now getting down to the nitty gritty which I know from experience is very hard to loose. This challenge is going to help.
Writing down my extra's that are not on my food plan....2 starches yesterday. Gosh I hated to write that down but way better than writing down everything I eat....really makes the errors stand out..lol..
I just love bread and that is the tough one for me.
Workout of 30 minutes African Dancing, done this A.M.

Good Morning Diary
Reporting in this morning. Yesterday went well with right on target with meal plan except for 1 chocolate ( a girl needs a treat once in awhile) or you will crash and burn and eat everything in sight.
Walked outside in the snow and fresh air in the afternoon. Makes me feel better although have a hard time making myself go out the door.
Life is pretty quiet here in the country in the winter, once the Christmas Season has passed. Plan to use this time to spend more time on myself as I know the busy time is not that many months away. A for me for yesterday.

Hello Diary:
12 days on this back to basics and doing OK so far. Worked out for 45 minutes this morning. Eating more veggies and only whole grain starches. I feel more energized and hopeful I can drop 10 or 20 lbs this winter. Working on the first 10 in the New Year Challenge. My blood sugars are within the normal range and that alone makes me feel better. My last AlC was 7.2 I want to match or better that by my next test in February.
I am on my way, anyone want to come along. Would love some interaction with others. My plan is simple eat healthy, and exercise minimum of 30 minutes per day. I was going to Curves for 3 years and so now I want to try and loose and maintain on my own without loosing muscle. Fat is what I want to go.

Welcome:
I feel pretty good today. Surprising what a few days of eating properly can do for you. Done my 30 minute workout this morning. Yesterday was good so a star for me
We are going to be away for the day for a second or third Christmas with family members so will need to watch myself. Let you know the results later. 4 hours driving will be a lot of sitting. So good to see them again and deliver our Christmas Gifts to them.

Welcome:
2 weeks today and weigh in at 196 ... Christmas weight gain gone...on with the challenge.
Did well yesterday, not well enough for a star. But it was another Christmas Celebration for us. And on special days I have no intention of being perfect on my weight regime. So I feel no guilt. Off to town this morning to stock up on lots of veggies and good healthy food to eat.

Hi Diary and everyone
Feeling pretty perky today. The exercise is starting to pay off, can squat and pick up something off the floor no problem. Yes!!! Now I have nothing laying on the floor that shouldn't be there. lol
Did about 20 minutes of my workout when the phone rang....this is a program on One, mind, body and spirit station on Star Choice. Also vacuumed for an hour and then wipped up the kitchen floor.
It is very cold out, the sun is shining brightly however so that is nice. These are the kind of days I like to bake cookies, buns etc....a nice way to spend the afternoon but just setting up temptation for myself so perhaps I may start a quilt or something like that or just read a good book.
Maggie Still eating my apple a day, are you?

Maggie,
It does feel good to move, doesn't it? I haven't for a while, but being it was up to 30 degrees today, I decided to go for a short walk. It felt great! Won't be doing that this weekend, when it's barely suppose to get above zero!

Hi Diary and All:
Thanks hisgal for stopping by. Yes, exercise does make one feel good. Glad you were able to go for a walk. Is your name Pat? seems I read that in your diary.
We are expecting very cold temperatures tonight and tomorrow. But today went to the city, nice for a Country Girl like me to get away even for a day. Did my 30 minute work out before leaving Other than having a burger and salad for lunch did pretty well eating wise. And all that walking and shopping must have used up a few calories.
Looked at some clothes but didn't buy any, going to wait until I get smaller !!!! Have to think positive.
Maggie guess I better go eat that apple!!! Time for bedtime snack. I have 3 meals a day and 3 snacks.

Good Morning:
Thanks hoofprints for stopping by. I appreciate the encouragement and looking forward to when my clothes start falling off...lol..
I find this journaling on line so helpful, I get encouragement from others and sort of validate myself. I can do this same as them.
Have done my 30 minute work out this morning. Morning is always my best time, get up at around 6:00 a.m. and have a healthy breakfast do a quick tidy of the kitchen. Then I make my pot of green tea, sit in my easy chair and watch the sun come up or daylight arrive if it is cloudy. First thing I know it is 9:00 o'clock and time for my workout.
Today is one of the coldest days of the year, so am going to set up my sewing machine and see what I can create. Love doing that.

Good Morning:
A lovely morning, overcast and a bit of light snow.
I increased my workout to 45 minutes today. I think I am ready to get serious about this now, otherwise I will maintain at 196 lbs just like I have been for 3 years. Was glad to have lost about 25 lbs and maintain for 3 years.....but now on with the show.
I have my sewing room set up and ready to start. When one is sewing you are not eating and that is a good thing. I also knit while watching TV in the evenings. Same thing when knitting one is not eating. Watched one of those weight shows last night and they didn't think much of knitting as an aerobic activity. But they don't give much thought to things to do besides snacking.
Their main focus is sweating while flipping tires or some such. Now if I was to start flipping tires down the driveway, they might haul me away....lol...
Have a good day and don't forget to eat your apple.

Hi Diary and others.
How are you all this morning?
Worked out for an hour this morning. I think that is a little too much cause I don't feel energized like I usually do. Just tired perhaps tomorrow will be a rest day. Don't want to give myself a heart attack. I do have a heart murmur.
Missed church again. I am just getting too chicken to drive in cold snowy weather. Hubby never wants to go.
Same reason I took 2 months off from Curves. May make it permanent. See how I make out on this Jan= Feb challenge. Seems silly to drive for 40 minutes for 30 minutes exercise, although I usually do the circuit 4 times when I do go which is maybe 2 times a week. Once in a great while I would make it 3 times which is what they recommend.
decisions, decisions
Right now I better get off my butt and prepare lunch. Salmon, salad, potatoe, and watermellon and milk is what I have planned. Oh and maybe some yellow beans.
See ya.....Maggie

Hello and Welcome Friends.
Nice to have you drop by Sassycat and to meet another country girl.
Got off to a good start this morning with a nice healthy breakfast. Then went into town shopping and looking at some new trucks with my hubby. That wore me out as I always think it is not time to trade yet even though I know it is...lol...
Then got groceries and forgot to walk on by the process meats and bought one package, it was good too for lunch as I made a quick sandwich. Have meetings this afternoon so hope not to give in to temptation at snack time.
No exercise so far today.

Good Morning and Welcome all:
Got off track quite a bit yesterday. Find that often happens when my schedule gets mixed up...late snacks...early meals etc.
Being a diabetic keeping my sugars level all day is most important and eating regular is of most importance to me even more so that what I eat.
Anyway sugar 8.2 this morning and I am not surprised like to keep it around 6.5 for fasting. Don't know if their are other diabetics on here or not.
Loosing weight when diabetic is an all new ball game and regular rules do not apply. If your sugar drops you have to eat whether you want to or not.
30 minute work out with Leslie Sansone this morning.
Good luck to all who are watching their calories. We can do it. We are doing it.

Hi Maggie Yes there are a few of us Diabetics or Carb sensitive ones out there. Are you type 1 or 2? I am type 2, diagnosed about 5 yrs ago. I find consistancy is the key, and preparation when not consistant. I carb count, keeping in mind fiber is my friend. Eating every few hours is good. I try not to go longer than 4 hours and make sure I have a breakfast bar or something with me when I'm not sure what might happen.
Your fasting # looks more like an A1c to me. Where do you live?(country) My meter reads in whole #'s and a good fasting # is 110 or less. 70 is getting too low.
I have tempted the "Health Gods" many times and am now working to get things under control. Eating well and exercising daily. I have joined Zen's "form a habit" challenge. Need to get back to the daily routine. If I do it for 3 weeks straight then maybe a day off will be a treat. Tried to make myself do it for 6 days with 1 day for rest and I got greedy and took another.
My biggest thing is what can I do FOREVER. Goal is Life and the quality of it.
Willing to share what I have learned. If you dont want to air it out here in your journal then PM me and I'll do the best I know.

Good Morning and Welcome
Started my day off right with a good breakfast and about 40 minute work out. Thanks personsmum for sharing with me. I live in Canada so our measurements are different. I think if one either multiplies or divides by 18 we get the correct measurement. So a blood sugar of 7.0 would be 146 for you.
AlC measurements are the same, my last one was 7.2 and they want it around 6. I have been a type 11 diabetic for about 10 years, have progressed from diet, to pills and now on Insulin 3 times per day. How about you?
I read your diary and see you have your weight down pretty good, where I would like to be. So any suggestions would be helpful. I also count carbs and not calories. My meal plan is for about 1500 - to 1800 calories a day. Stickin to it is the problem!!!!
I don't mind sharing on here, then it may be helpful to others.
Thanks again.

Hi Maggie
I am taking oral metformin 2x a day. Watching food, and exercise. I find one without the other is o.k. but the whole package works better. In the beginning I took a "Diabetes education course" sponsored by the local clinic and hospital. Diabetes educator and dietitian taught the classes. That was the BEST thing I did. I was somewhat knowledgeable as I am the 3rd member of my immediate family to have it as well as many friends & their family members. If this is something that is offered near you it will be well worth it. The Dietitian gave everyone a breakdown of total cals/day and carb quantities/meal/snack. Since I don't eat 3 meals and 1 snack as was listed I just count per sitting and keep a running total. They also went over all the things this disease can do to you if you don't keep control. Some of that was an eye opener for me.
I am working on that same 20 that I have lost MANY times. Although I must admit that if I didn't HAVE to watch what I eat, it WOULD be more than 20. My mantra is nothing white. Sugar, bread, rice, and the most missed and difficult, pasta. If I have it it's a measured portion like lean cuisine and I can't go back for seconds. I need/want to be 130-135 as that seems to be comfortable to me. I ALWAYS battle the as I don't watch and sometimes just get tired of "working" it. Then I remember it's Life and the Quality of it that I'm working on. Pick myself up, and start all over again. My last A1c was not done, my saving grace as I was not "working" it. My fasting that day was 119 (6.6) and Dr. thought that would be O.K. Lucky me. Since getting my head screwed on right they have been around 90-100 (5-5.5) I will say I have been very good on both the diet and exercise. I am micro managing the food I eat to see what I usually eat and where better choices are. My BP was up and has been for about a year. I'm looking at sodium along with carbs, protein, fats, fiber.
Many people, when you tell them you have diabetes" feel sorry for you. I have looked at it as somewhat of a blessing. I HAVE to eat well, and when I do my body is better off for it. Yes it's still HARD. I keep in mind there is nothing I CAN'T have. I just have to count it, plan it, and work it off.
Sorry for the long post, I'll get off my soap box. Have a great day

| Personsmom, how long did it take you to be okay with the metformin? I was on it for about a month and a half and I was sick the entire time. I finally just stopped taking it. I was on the lowest dose and had nausea all day every day, no matter when I took it and whether or not i had it with food. :(

Abby, I was LUCKY!! It was the first med she chose and it worked. I started 1000mg/day, uped it when I was having an I don't care attitude and my A1c was over 7. I've read one of the side affects is gastro-intestinal distress Oh my. A co-worker's Mom was on it and it was immediate, she was playing Queen for a day. So I count my blessings as it's a generic and CHEAP at WalMart.

Good Morning and Welcome
Isn't it nice to share our experiences. A lot of what you say Lee is the same as what I do. I have been to a diabetic learning clinic and found it so interesting to find how things work before that I just ate or went on a diet didn't really know or think how things work.
Like a fruit for right now, a starch for an hour or two from now, protein to slow it all from hitting your blood stream at once.
I was on oral meds at one point but have never taken Metaformin. I like Insulin, you can depend on your energy coming up every day, the down side is all the injections, cost etc. and one has to watch more closely for lows.
I had one in the middle of the night last night and they are scarry...what if I hadn't woke up, I did wake in a sweat and thought yep, you have to get up and test your sugar...but I don't want to I am too tired and the temptation to go back to sleep is very strong. But!!! I did get up and yep I had to have some ornage juice.
I still see the diatitician about every year to 18 months. The last time I went she wanted me to start having 4 milk a day so that one will not become frail as we age. Trouble is I really don't like milk too much ...but I do my best usually get in at least 2 or 3. I wonder about this though as I also take calcium and vitamin D daily.
40 minute work out done this morning. House all tidied and right on target so far.
More later, off to work I go. Oh yes, a for yesterday.

Good Morning and Welcome:
Fantastic day. Sun is shining and making diamonds on the snow. I love that.
Blood sugar this morning was 5.1 and I get a star for sticking to my program yesterday
Today I have done a 40 minute work out. Starting to feel much better and more optimistic I can loose this extra weight.
Was re-reading some journaling I had done last year and it was quite interesting...so started journaling again. A very simple form of it,
Make it a great day. A present to yourself and that is what weight loss is a gift to yourself.

Good Morning and Welcome:
Had a good day yesterday, except for about 10 smarties in the evening. They were talking about it takes 3 weeks to form a habit. So since Christmas I have formed the habit of having a few sweets at night. That is the habit I have to break. Starting now on Sunday Jan 27. Will check if I am too late for the break a habit challenge.
No workout so far today. May be a rest day. See what happens. Weekends are always hard to schedule.
My journaling was done yesterday..total 1840 calories...I just estimated on the large side no time for entering and waiting for the computer to compute. I am on dial up so all those kind of things take too long. Or I have no patience (another habit to work on)
I think I know most calorie counts pretty good from the old days when I used to do that. My meal plan is for 1800 calories.

I am so pleased to post l lb. loss on the New Year Challenge. So that is 5 lbs gone. Yes!!! Goal for the challenge is 189 and weighing 194 this a.m. Half way there.
Did get in some exercise yesterday, also went a little overboard at supper (had company) Why do I overeat when I have company?? Have to think on that one. Start out good and then will mindlessly reach for seconds. Another habit to break, there are so many. lol
Today so far a good breakfast and 40 minute workout done.

Looks like you're really getting it together. YEAH! Getting those "good habits" more then the "bad habits" in place. Work it girl.
Have you ever changed brands of meters and got a VERY different reading. Have been using an Acucheck meter and received a Bayer Contour. Free as they want you to buy their testing supplies. I tested with both this AM Acucheck 95 (5.2) Bayer (1st time) 79 (4.4) 2nd time 83 (4.6) I have a problem with having such a wide discrepancy. I drew blood from the same spot each time.(fingers) I need to make a decision on which test strips to buy soon. I stopped at drug store to check pricing and the Bayer ones are slightly cheaper and the meter reading is faster. Just questioning the accuracy. Any experience with this?

Hi Lea:
Thanks for the encouragement, feeling good about it and hope to keep it up. Have decided to make "me" my winter project. Only time of year I have time for myself it seems. Being farmers. life is pretty busy spring, summer and fall.
I have an Accu check Aviva and it takes 10 seconds for results. I have had this meter for a few months now and you know I never made a comparison from my old to my new...duh
Your results are pretty fantastic on both meters. I wouldn't worry too much about the difference. I got my meter for free also but the strips are expensive. One day I ordered new strips for my old one and the pharmacist gave me a new meter and the strips. Not sure why...to keep me up with the times I guess.
Do you ever have trouble with low sugars?

Hi Maggie, Yes me too. Told my hairdresser that this is the year for "ME". Daughter turns 20 in May and much more independent. (and still dependant cause I'm there to support) Finally getting my head out of a relationship I SHOULD have given up on a long time ago. All I did was put off the inevitable. So now it's ME time and without guilt.
I have not experienced lows recently. I did however when I was pregnant. First experience and it was mild. Made me lethargic and on the couch for the weekend. Had Dr. appt. on Monday and he said..."that's your low point stay above it". So when I get down in the 70's (4.0) area I make sure I have some instant sweet and a short time after some long term carbs. Although you description of you lows, having night sweats, I have had and passed it off as menopause. Hmm May be looking at that from another view next time it happens. Yes sharing our experiences are wonderful.

Hello and Welcome:
My hand is feeling better and gosh it is very unhandy to only have one hand to work with. Did get into those smarties again...guess I thought they would make me feel better. Didn't work though, never does, guess we all know that, mmmm so why do we do it.
So glad Lea that you are making this your time for me also.
By the amount of people on this board I guess a lot of us are trying to do that. Easier for those of us with our family grown or nearly on their own.
Well Diary, tomrrow we get back to exercising, these slow walks are better than nothing, but prefer more active activities. Like cross country skiing, snowmobiling, picnics in the snow now that it has warmed up some. Mostly I just go walking, but might dust off those skiis. Down hill is not for me but cross country maybe!!!
Really impressed with all the pounds lost in the New Year Challenge...way to go gang, lets keep it up, we can do it. I know we can do it. We will hit a few bumbs on the way, that is life but when we do just pick up our feet and continue on.
Good night.

Good Morning, nice to see you.
Off to a good start this morning with a good breakfast and 40 minute workout done.
I am finding it necessary to make adjustments to my Insulin so will require more testing for the next few days.
To anyone who stops by have a happy Sunday. Do something nice for yourself. If you are watching your weight remember we can do it. It just requires some discipline with ourselves (not easy I know) and a little exercise even 10 to 20 minutes a day helps.
....thats how many apples I ate last week. Yea for me

Good Morning and Welcome:
Another great day here on the Canadian Prairies, beautiful white frost outside, the trees are so beautiful.
Workout of 40 minutes done. House tidied, beds made....wow zipping right along today. Pancake supper tonight......better make plans for it. Like 2 pancakes and 2 sausage and tiny tiny bit of syrup and butter.
I don't really like pancakes much but there is no other choice at these church suppers, and one has to eat and NO, I am not taking my own lunch. One has to learn to live in the real world. The problem will be when I get home still hungry. Well we shall see how it goes. Will have some veggies ready for snacking.
star for yesterday.
Have a good day, eat your veggies, and some water.

Hi Maggie Looks like it's going well for you. How's the insulin adjusting going? My meter dilemma was increased. Friend gave me one, Freestyle. It reads more than old one. I have run out of test strips for old one and I now am using the 2 newest ones and comparing them. There is a 20pt range from low to high. A bit much for me. Will kind of wing it 'till June when labs are due. I like your living in the real world attitude. Have you tried Smuckers "sugar free" syrup? Pretty good, but still has the sugar alcohols. I would have to bring that along, but still eat the rest of the food.
Have a great day

Hi Lea:)
Glad you dropped by. All those different readings are a bit troublesome and worrying. I wonder if maybe you could get an AlC before June. Your medical system is different than ours. I have a standing order for AlC every 3 months or oftener if I am worried.
My adjusting of Insulin is going good so far. I cut out the R Insulin completely, that stuff is dynamite but it brings your sugar down quickly. I was mixing R at supper time with a long lasting Insulin. So now I am walking for 20 minutes after supper and eating less bedtime snack. At least I don't need to worry about lows in the night. Of course my next AlC will also tell the true story.
I have been taught how to adjust my own Insulin and I figure nobody knows my body and reactions better than me....so I am prepared to give it a go for now and if my sugars start rising will consult with the diabetes educator.
Nice to have someone to talk to about all this diabetes stuff.
Oh yes, they do have sugar free syrup at the supper (I am not the only diabetic)
Thanks Lea, I have been stopping by your diary and really enjoy those inspiration sites you posted.

Hello Diary and others:
Have had a good day, returned to Curves after a couple of months of being away. It felt good and nice to see the girls again. Weighed myself on their scale and 4.5 lbs lighter than the last time I weighed there. That made me feel good. Walked 20 minutes after supper and my sugars have been around 6 all day. 6 is my favorite numer for that
Stocked up on groceries, especially lots of veggies and fruit. I buy some frozen as well as fresh.
Did very well at the pancake supper, a star for me

Good Morning Congratulations on the 6's and consistancy. Something we strive for. I'm sure the girls were glad to see you too, and less of you. Usually when I return to the workout schedule it's hanging my head in shame. Keep up the good work.

Good Morning All:
Ah no Lea never hang your head in shame, just celebrate you went back to the gym or workout routine. Everyone there is fighting the same battle and understands.
Well I am feeling very lazy today, but did my 40 minute work out if slowly. but it is done, Yaaaa!!!
Got my hair cut yesterday, now if I go take a shower will hopefully feel like a new woman and a little more energetic. Probably my sugars are going too low again. Ahhhh shoot it never ends.....it would be wonderful to go on a diet without worrying about nothing but what you eat. So all you non diabetics count your blessings and get in shape cause it could happen to you. Wish I had paid more attention sooner.
Have a great day.

Good Morning
Cold here today....brrrr
Great day to curl up with a good book. May do that later.
40 minute workout done and of course a good breakfast.
Remember we can because we choose to do it consciously.
Make great choices today, I am going to do my very best to plan ahead, as I find that very helpful. If one can open the fridge and find the right thing that is half the battle.
Also a bowl of fruit on the table or a prominent place is a great visual reminder to eat healthy. Same thing with a picture or magazine. Don't leave a magazine with a picture of luscious looking desserts on the cover laying where the minute you sit down there it is!!!
I am off to put these plans into action.
Til tomorrow.
