Theresa, I've been reading your diary hoping to get a glimpse of your life in Uganda and what Uganda is like. It's interesting to me to have a friend so far away in Uganda. It doesn't sound like you were born in Uganda. I think you may have an interesting story!
Also, on oiling up. I started oiling up about a year ago. I bought my own essential oils and carrier oil (Jojoba.) I also buy pure shea butter from Ebay and mix with the oil. I don't think we absorb the calories from oiling up. If we do, I'm dead meat. My skin looks so much better. I had a burn scar on my hand that has disappeared. I have read they use shea on burn victims. I've gotten some good ideas about skin are from my black friends. I can very seldom tell how old a black woman is because their skin looks so good. This is because they start oiling up as children so their skin won't look chalky. Their skin just doesn't seem to age very fast. Another reason I'm oiling up is because I am hoping it will help keep me from having loose skin after losing all my weight. Unless I look like a skeleton on down the line, I plan to lose a total of 86 lbs.
Enough of my chatter. Let's continue onward! Sounds like you're doing very well, especially with all the social functions you attend.
Take care.

Hi Beth, I also hope that our bodies don't absorb the oil calories because once a week I drown myself in Olive oil(the one you get from the pharmacy) because it seems to work for me and it doesn't cost a fortune. I also get jealous at how well the blacks age compared to us, and it is probably part oiling up and part not being as sensitive as whites to the sun.
I was born in South Africa(Proudly South African) and only came to Uganda 2 and a half years ago. I don't plan being here too much longer as my son is nearing finishing school and I want him to go to college in SA because the higher education in Uganda is really not that good, and if he wants to work it will have to be SA as well or anywhere else for that matter except Africa. There is way too much corruption in Africa so hopefully he can one day get work with an international company.
Uganda is nice as an experience but not somewhere one wants to live to long. Well that's how I feel anyway.

Oiling up? hmmm sounds interesting and like perhaps it would be a good research topic for me. I was looking at how much your eating habits have changed over the months. It's hardly a wonder you've lost so much weight.
cheers my friend

Hoofprints, it definately works for me cutting out all the breads, choccies and refined foods and just upping my veggies and fruit. Another thing that seems to boost my weight loss that I copied from you is drinking a protein drink in the morning. We are gonna get there!!!!
Yesterday my steak was bigger than I had bargained on so that was another 200 calories and then I didn't manage to get pumpkin so that was minus 100 calories so calories ended a little higher on 1650, but that was all healthy calories so no harm done. I even went for an additional 3km walk last night.
Today was the usual 7km walk and the 30 minute weight workout.
Breakfast this morning was my 2 weetabix with NF milk and cinnamon (188) and a whey protein drink with NF milk as well (290) Snack is a 500g peice of paw paw (208)
Lunch will be that pumpkin I didn't have last night with steamed brocolli (90) Snack is a 100ml yoghurt (106) and some roasted chickpeas (36) (these are so nice to crunch away on that it is like eating sweeties for me lately)
Milk for coffee (90) Water 2L (0)
Supper will be wholewheat pasta(210) with mince(200) and 3 cheese sauce.(54) Snack will be dried fruit pieces (120)
Calories for the day 1645 Protein 98.8, 24% fat 27.2, 15% carbs 260.2, 62% and fibre 31

I've never seen any roasted chickpeas here. I bet they would be good. I think I'll try a protein drink sometime in the morning. I think I'd gag early, but maybe later on I could do it and it would help. I learn something new every day!
Have a great day!

Yesterday's calories ended on 1700. I had some peanuts, about 16.
I will be going away from this afternoon to Jinja for a nice long weekend break until late Saturday/early Sunday so I won't be posting probably until Monday. I will continue watching what I eat however as I do want to be down another two pounds by Monday.
Breakfast was a huge one of 2 sausages, a fried egg, a toasted bun and a tomato, onion and greenpepper stirfry thingy. (650)
Lunch will be a 100ml yoghurt(106) and a banana(110) I will take my roasted chickpeas to snack on(36)
Milk for coffees(130)
That will leave me with 600 calories for supper, which I will try make chicken and veggies/salad only.

Good morning Theresa,
Glad to hear the protein drinks help. For my crazy plan the more meals that include a protein the better. It makes me feel full and helps buidl muscle not fat. Like you I'm a believer that it's not only the amount of calories but the "kind" of calories we eat that affect us.
I try for lots of good protein (not processed sausage or meats) and lots of fruits and vegies. If it has fat, sugar or chemicals I try to avoid it. Except last night when I completely screwed up...but I'll pay today.
I love how you balance what you are eating for supper based on your counts for the day, I'm the same.
Can you find good protein powders or shall I send you some from here...like illegal stuff.....you can smuggle in good protein powders.

Hoofie, it definately is the type of food that makes me lose wieght more that calorie counting. I find it I eat 1600 calories of breads, pasta etc I don't lose much weight. If I eat 1600 calories of low fat protein with only veggies and fruit then my wieght drops far more quickly.
I do manage to get whey powder here in a South African shop so I don't need you to smuggle some protein powders in for me yet.
This long weekend I ate at maintenance calories because we went to a resort. The calories were 80% healthy foods so I didn't put any weight on but I also didn't lose any weight . I was good in the drinking department because I only had 3 glasses of red wine the whole time while everybody else was drinking bottles and bottles of wine and beer.
I so badly wanted to lose my 2lbs this week, but I will just have to be happy with not gaining at least.
This morning I had cornflakes with NF milk for breakfast (145) and will have a 100ml yoghurt as a snack.(106)
Lunch was a boiled egg (78) and half an avo(227) Snack is chickpeas(48)
Milk for coffees(90) Water (0)
Supper is a brown vegetable rice(lentils, brocolli, tomato, onion, garlic&ginger) (171) pumpkin (49) and a pork chop without fat (299) Snack will be dried fruit(120)
Opps! The BF bought me 4 little chocolate sweeties because I have not been feeling so great. That is very sweet of him but not so very great for me. (200)
Calories for the day 1575 Protein 92.5, 23% fat 50.3, 28% carbs 196.4, 49% and fibre 30

Thanks Molly Moo, I was very proud of myself that I was careful with the wine. I just loooove a good wine.
I also only had 3 of the chocolate sweets and gave one away, not an easy feat I can tell you. My excercise yesterday was the half hour with weights and a 3km walk. I was very bad with water yesterday and only had about 1 glass
This morning was my nice long hard uphill walk of just under 7 km's. We counted our hills on this walk and it is 8, some are harder and longer than others so they aren't all killers though.
Breakfast was cornflakes and NF milk with cinnamon.(190) Snack will be a 100 ml vanilla yoghurt(106).
Lunch will be chilli pilchards on wholewheat bread (280) Snack is my roasted chickpeas(49)
Milk for coffees(90) Water 1.5L(0)
I had a mango (201)
Supper will be steak, a few fries and garlic brinjals.(556)
Calories for the day 1615 Protein 73.1, 17% fat 50, 26% carbs 255, 58% and fibre 22.3

Molly Moo the chilli pilchards are tinned in a hot chilli sauce that I love.
Last night I made some sweet potato fries and they were just as yummy as normal potato fries although still made with oil. My calories ended a little higher because I ate two meusli rusks(160)
This morning I did my usual weight workout and will have to walk this evening because my walking partner let me know too late that she won't make it.
Breakfast was cornflakes with NF milk and cinnamon(192). A yoghurt for a snack(106)
A mango (201) and an egg on a wholewheat sandwich(240) Chickpeas to snack on(36)
Milk for coffee(90) Water 1.5L(0) Protein drink (100)
Supper will be chilli flavoured TVP(80) and mashed pumpkinwith a little butter(99) and green beans(22) Dried fruit(108)

Yesterday's calories ended on 1870 due to a few extra chocolate coated peanuts and not eating my orange. It will have to be my maintenance day.
Breakfast today was two slices of french toast with jam(made with olive oil) and a tiny bit of grated cheese.(440)
Milk for coffee(90)
I agree Beth! Today though I have been eating like I was a starving person . It's TTOM and I was so hungry all day and craving caramel and chocolates which the fruit helped me stay away from. I have also not had water to drink which has of course worsened the munchies, so I will start drinking now so that I don't do anymore damage.
I have had a carrot muffin(480) a meusli bar(250) a bowl of cornflakes with NF milk(200)an orange(62) and a 100ml yoghurt(108)and supper was chicken curry(335) and brown rice(216) with a glass of orange juice(72)
My calories are 2240 for the day . And I thought yesterday was a maintenance day! Protein 104.9, 18% fat 60.4, 24% carbs 327.4, 58% and fibre 18.2

Hopefully today is a bit better than yesterday's wanting to chomp everything in site.
I got woken up early this morning by some nutcase chanting and singing.
1.) Either he was a malaria victim far gone with the disease without treatment(we get that often here, they walk around shouting and ranting happily away by themselves)who should go to hospital and into the loony ward
2.) He could have been a witchdoctor, in which case I would have loved to shove his bones and stones up his a*se!
3.) A preacher man whom I would have love to bonk hard over his head with his Bible and tell him God was sleeping in due to being up late answering prayers on Saturday.
So much for sleeping late on a Sunday morning.
For breakfast I had cornflakes, cinnamon and milk(240) Snack will be an orange(62)
Milk for coffee(90) Water 1.5L(0)
Lunch will be meatballs and gravy,(280) greenbean casserole,(219) pumpkin(99) and brown rice with red lentils.(140) Dessert will be Jelly and evaporated milk(215)
Calories 1371 Protein 77.1, 22% fat 31.5, 20% carbs 199, 57% fibre 19.7
Not too bad so far but I dont know what I'm going to do about supper.

Malaria victims, witch doctors, and inconsiderate preachers. Oh my! All that woke me up early this morning was a cold nose poking in my face.
I hate those munchy days. TTOTM does all kinds of things. Hang in there and just try to not have a blowout.

Yep Molly Moo, life can get verryyyy interesting here in Uganda at times! Yesterday I ate healthy food but in the late afternoon and evening I ended up chomping a small bag of mini chocolate croissants(190) and a bag of M&M's(220) so my calories ended on 1900-2000 for the day.
I have been demotivated and a little down as well because I have been on 191lbs for the last 3 weeks and I have been working my butt off(well actually it's still there though) to lose some weight, any da*n weight!
I was very demotivated to go for my walk this morning because my walking partner is in SA for a couple of days and I was planning on giving it a miss. I managed to work up to a more positive, ok I will just go by myself! eventually.
So while Im charging up these hills it suddenly starts pouring with rain. I have never ever enjoyed my walk as I did this morning. Actually I ran 3 km's of the 7km's in the pouring rain and felt so alive and revitalised.
Something must have been in that rain, wonder where the term *acid* rain comes from I even had the taxi drivers looking very concerned at me and stopping to enquire if I need a lift as well as everyone standing under shelter calling me to come stand under as well. I of course happily grinned at all and said no thank you. I think most of them thought I had untreated malaria and was as crazy as a loon.
I must say I am glad that I went for that walk/run on my own. It really really felt sooooo good.
I will just have to persevere and keep trying and hope that the plateau will eventually just disappear and I will start losing again.
Breakfast was a whey and cinnamon drink with NF milk(293) Snach roasted chickpeas(20)
Lunch a 100ml yoghurt(106) an orange(62) and snack will be a few more chickpeas to nibble on(20)
The big boss from SA is here so I will be eating out tonight and tommorrow night and will have to try eat as healthily as possible

I laughed out loud about your run in the rain and the onlookers. Good for you!
I've been on a plateau, too. It's frustrating. I am losing inches but not pounds. I really have worked my butt off. I have to be careful where I sit because I don't have much padding and it hurts to hit the tailbone when I sit down. Now the stomach is another matter. It's sitting there just fine. If only I could turn it around to my butt.
I guess I'll research the plateau phenomena. If I could help it leave, I surely would like to . Maybe all we can do is trudge on.
I hope you have a wonderful dinner with the big boss. Maybe you have a nice one.
Have a great day!
Beth

Theresa, that's so awesome about your run in the rain. Very cool. Now you gotta get your shoes dry for tomorrow.
You and Beth are going through plateaus at the same time. Darn it. Don't get discouraged and sabotage yourself with chocolates...it will restart again, and sooner if you don't stray too far.

remember "lifestyle" and the plateau won't mean as much. Just watch that the scale stays in the four pound range...any higher and really work hard to get it back.

Thanks Beth, Molly Moo and Hoofprints, I am hanging in there but was a bit naughty last night with the food and wine. I had beef nachos, tortillas and a brownie and cream as dessert. I also had two glasses of red wine Calories ended on 1900-2000.
This morning I had my 5km walk with very stiff legs from yesterdays run. It's funny while I am charging on my walks I don't feel stiff at all, but when I stop my legs get all stiff again.
Breakfast was instant oats with oat bran(7 g fibre ) and I added in 25g of my whey powder for protein as well as half a teaspoon of cinnamon. Snack will be chickpeas(25)
A yoghurt(106) and an orange(62) and banana(105) for lunch. Snack chickpeas(25)
Just found out we might have a barbeque instead of eat at a restuarnt tonight, which would probably be my healthier option due to salads.

Weights and running too. Keep it up!! I haven't any hills right around here, let alone KILLER hills. The closest thing I see to a climbing a hilll is going up my front steps! Chicago is on the bed of a larger glacial area lakebed. Flat as a pancake.

I used to wish for just plain flat roads when I started walking/running here Molly Moo, but I am now glad for the hills because they definately give me a good leg/lung workout. Kampala is made of a lot of hills, especially where I am.

It's the weekend T - don't forget your veggies!
I can't yet imagine doing big hills. I've come a long way in managing my breathing while jogging but as today showed me, I have a loooooong way further to go. You inspire me with how steady you are with your workouts. I always enjoy your posts.
I looked up Kampala. I'd have never guessed it was a city of over 1 million people. That doesn't match my mental picture of the goats on the streets, I pictured you living rurally. My internet is running slow up here unfortunately so I haven't been able to look at a lot of pictures, but it looks "dry".
You have mentioned that you will eventually go back to SA. What part of SA? I am enjoying learning a bit about a part of the world I am not familiar with. Our company has an office in SA, I think it is in Johannesburg. I like the gal that runs the office there. If I get a global job, I might have to visit there some day. : )

Molly Moo Kampala is actually very tropical and wet at the moment. I know when my daughter googled Kampala she said it just shows tons of dust. Most of the streets are still just sand roads and I think that this is the reason it must seem dusty and dry. I can asure you it is not. Uganda is wet and humid especially in the rainy season as we are currently having now.
Although Uganda is land locked it is as if we are living at the seaside. Warm and humid. I actually love the weather because it is never cold and my skin is never dry here, but I suffer arthritis in my one shoulder and it does get badly affected by the wet weather sometimes.
We do live in a suburb but it is a mixture of big beautiful houses and shacks next to each other. You will see the goats happily waddling along the roads next to the cars or sleeping in the driveway of some lovely huge house. I think this is what I will miss most here, the animals and humans just living together and around each other. I keep promising to post some pictures and I will make a better effort to take some and post them in my diary this week. That's a promise! Now I have to!
Molly Moo I will be staying in a place called Roodekrans in Roodepoort that falls under (Johannesburg) Gauteng. Johannesburg is a huge place. Some places are yucky and terrible and others are nice.

This weekend was definately not a calorie wise weekend. I ate maintenace calories all weekend an also ate a lot of unhealthy calories, refined carbs, sweets, wine etc. I did do this one purpose though to just have a break and also try shock the system a bit so that I can start all over again from today. I will be experimenting and trying ways to get out of the plateau that I have reached.
I will be having a 1000 calorie day today, Wednesday and Friday and then 2000 calorie days for the other 4 days of the week. Today I have decided will just be a fruit only day and then on Wednesday I will make it a vegetable only day. Friday will be fruit and vegetable only day and the other days will be anything that I want but trying to keep it as healthy as possible. I guess it sort of works out as a detox day on the low calorie days apart from the milk in my coffees though.
Today was my nice long walk with the eight smaller hills and my half hour weight workout.
Food eaten so far today is 300g of paw paw/papaya(119) picked fresh from the tree in the garden. I will be having alot of these lately because they are starting to ripen and we have 3 papaya palm trees bearing fruit in our garden.
Water 1.5L(0) and milk for daily coffees (90)
Other fruit for the day = 300g of green grapes (209) 1 tangerine(62) 2 medium baked apples with 2 prunes and cinnamon. Another serving of grapes(105)
Calories 766 which are mainly carbs.90% 8% Protein and 2% fat and fibre 20.6g

Thanks Molly Moo, I will make sure to post those photos soon.
I did keep my calories under 1000 yesterday but in the evening I only had one apple, didn't havwe more grapes and I made myself a fried egg on toast instead. Boy did that taste sooooo good after just eating fruit all day. I think I must just eat healthy during the low cal days but not torture myself with only fruit or only veggies because it is difficult enough as it is. Theresa, you will have to let us know how the zig-zagging is working. I did that once, and it worked! I should try it again...........if I can get myself back to normal eating. I've just been eating too much lately. I really don't count calories, doing a loose version of Eat to Live. But, I know that somedays I eat too many calories, otherwise the lbs. would be coming off!
You are doing such an awesome job of tracking calories and getting your walking in!
WAY TO GO, THERESA!

Thanks Hisgal, I do hope it works too. I will give it a week or two. I kind of like doing it this way, I feel one day low and one day high is like treating yourself after being extremely good for a day. Although it ends up being exactly the same calories for a week eating 1600 calories every day day.
Yesterdays calories ended up very low even though I had a small chocolate in the evening they ended on 575 for the day. This nice thing is I get too add the missing calories to todays calories which will be 2400 for the day.
Today was my usual long hilly walk for excercise.
Breakfast was a whey protein(200) with a tablespoon of flaxseed(53) (managed to find some) eventually. Banana and cinnamon Pronutro with NF milk.(250)
Lunch 2 slices of toast with margerine and marmite (260) tons of sugar free oat cookies(splenda)(450) Paw paw(60)
Supper was steak, egg on toast and chips.(850) Snack was a few chocolate peanuts(100)
NF Milk for coffees(90) Water 1.5L(0)
Calories for the day 2100-2400 High fat and protein. Fibre 28

Thanks for the support Zen, Molly . Let's hope it stays thaty way for a while.
Yesterday's calories ended on 950-1000. I had paw paw, popcorn and a few blocks of chocolate in the eveing.
Today is a 2000 calorie day and tommorrow a 2200 day so at least I get to chomp nicely this weekend. I must keep those calories healthy though to keep up the loss, so I will try eat lots of veggies this weekend.
Breakfast was Banana-cinnamon Pronutro with NF milk(290) snack is paw paw(60).

Thanks Hoofie, I have decided to zig one zag the next starting from Monday every week and then keeping the weekend for high calorie(maintenance). That way I remember and don't get too confuddled . Although Saturday I did go a bit over calories because I had an anchovie pizza. And the chocolates again . I don't know whats going on with me lately with the chocolate thing. I just cannot seem to get enough. censored: other appetites also cannot seem to be fulfilled( the boyfriend is hiding under the bed) It must definately be hormones.
Today is the low calorie day again. Worked out with the weights and will go walk this evening.
Breakfast is paw paw(60)
NF Milk(90) Water 1.5L(0)
Lunch was 2 cinnamon cooked apples.(150) a homemade paw paw, flaxseed and whey icecream(153) A few roasted chickpeas(49)
Supper was a vegetable stirfry made in a little olive oil(200)
Calories for the day 700-800
Molly Moo and others interested I haven't forgotten my promise about the photos and have selected some to post but am busy struggling to do it. Hopefully you will be able to see them in the next hour or so.
