Wow Molly Moo, thanks! A poem just for me! Brilliant! and cute.
I have had two days without electricity! The joys of deep dark Africa! I have been good and kept up with my morning walking and I have been watching what I am eating but it has increased up to approximately 1800 calories. Funnily enough my weight dropped down again to 195.5. It must have been water weight that pushed it up to 197 om Monday morning....actually who cares what it was as long as it's back down again
I have been eating more fibre every day. I bought two packets of roasted chickpeas and snack on them every now and then. The taste grows on you. I had to clean out my fridge this morning when the electricity came on again and throw out all my chicken and fish. Our weather is just too hot and humid for anything to keep more that a day. I have had to have cold showers since monday and I am a terrible sissy because I refused to wash my hair in the cold shower but at least I could today.
Breakfast was oats, banana and crushed peanuts with cinnamon.(320)
I will eat a yoghurt as a snack later or use it in a smoothie with a pear and banana. Actually thats a good idea. I have been craving a smoothie since our electricity went off. Always want what I can't have! Made a banana, pear, flaxseed, yoghurt , whey and no fat milk smoothie with cocoa to give it a chocolatey taste (390) *burp*
I have been snacking on some roasted chick peas(36) for crunch factor throughout the day.
Supper I will still dwell on....I have decided a beef (243)stir fry with brown rice(217) for supper
Calories so far 1476 Protein 78.6, 21% fat 26.9, 16% carbs 239, 63% and fibre 25.7
I have decided to allow myself up to 1800 calories a day because I seem to lose easier with higher calories lately. I will give it another week or so and then decide if I should decrease or change again.

Yesterday's calories were under 1600 and I had no Chocolates! and I ate lots of fibre. I went for my morning and afternoon walks which amount to just under 10km's.
Today I have not been able to walk yet due to it raining continuously since 3am this morning. We seem to have what we call the wet season upon us. We hear that it will last until June. This is the closest we come to Winters in Uganda. The Ugandans say it is cold but to us expats it is like a summer showers weather. I never even wear a jersey. Hopefully it will stop raining by late afternoon so that i can go for a nice walk later.
Breakfast was a fried egg toasted brown sandwich and a small banana (390)
Snack is some roasted chickpeas to nibble on(20)
Lunch will be a yoghurt, banana, flaxseed, pronutro,PB and ff milk smoothie(540)
Snack will be roasted chickpeas(20) Milk for coffees(90)
Supper is chicken lasagne(430)
Calories 1470 Protein 83.3, 23% fat 27.2, 17% carbs 249.4, 60% fibre 19.6

| Part of the reason my fiber is very high is because I've found high fiber english muffins (8g and only 100 cal per serving) and I try to eat at least 1-2 servings of beans per day. If you can find a way to add beans into your routine, I think you'll see both your fiber and protein percentages go up.

Thanks Abby, the only thing is I am not too crazy about beans. I do not like baked beans at all, but I do like a sweet 3 bean salad. I will try find ways to chomp some beans in future.
Yesterday was a no go on any excercise due to lots of rain and my calories ended on 1700. Now that would have been ok except for the fact that I had 2 chocolate covered cookies at 220 calories.
Today I went for a lovely long walk, although a lot of it was skiing on mud due to yesterday's rain, and boy there are lots of trees that have fallen over due to the mushy ground. But the walk was my usual long one though. I must definately get back to the weights next week again, I have skipped them now for 2 weeks.
Breakfast was 2 slices of toast with peanut butter and jam(285) Snack is roasted chickpeas(40)
Lunch will be sardines on toast(220) Snack an apple (72)
Milk for coffee(90) Water 1.5L(0) (Had absolutely none yesterday )
Homemade egg and cheese burger with salad for supper(550)
A 20g mint chocci (because it's Friday) (110) A 100 ml bio yohurt(108)
Calories 1472 Protein 80.7, 22% fat 53.3, 33%(all the diary products) carbs 164.8, 45% and fibre 18.6

Abby, are those the Thomas light english muffins? I got those too! I had the whole grain ones in my hand, then read the label on the light ones. With that low calorie count and high fiber, I broke my rule about only buying bread products that are 100% whole grain. What a treat for 100 calories (especially when you love breads like I do! )
Theresa, I add black beans (thoughly rinsed off) or garbanzo beans to my salads. I love them there. But, I do love baked beans too! I get the vegetarian, made without added bacon or whatever animal products they add to the "regular" ones. I have a wonderful recipe for a bean salad that I just love! I'm thinking it has 5 different beans in it, and cilantro, which I love!

I love pork and beans in a sort of stew actually, but it's something I would buy here in Uganda at a restuarant and not something I would make at home. Actually I wouldn't know where to start and what pork (belly thigh etc to use.) I should just maybe in future add some beans to my stews or curries. This weekend I bought a bottle of white bean salad that is typical South African but it is sweet, made with cane sugar and white beans and caramel flavour. OMG! was that bottle divine. Think the calories would be a bit on the high side with the sugar though. Hisgal maybe send your bean salad recipe my way and I will see if I can make it and like it. Hopefully it's sweet?
This weekend was a maintenance one again due to junk as usual. I have decided to get some dried fruit and eat that instead of sweets in the evening. I have really been crazy with eating chocolates lately. Today I have had my walk and worked out with my weights again.
Breakfast was Pronutro cereal (455) and a yoghurt(106) Roasted chickpeas to snack on (40)
Lunch was a Pilchard brown sandwich(285) Snack was white bean salad(200)? Small pear(84)
Milk(130) Water 1.5L(0)
Supper will be wholewheat spagetti with a vegetarian(lentil, tomato, zuchinni, garlic) sauce(400) Snack 3 pieces of dried fruit.(100)
Calories for the day 1800 Protein 94.4, 20% fat 24.3 12%, carbs 321.1, 68% Fibre 54.4 It's the beans! Thanks Abby will try and eat more beans and lentils from now on! Calories are higher than I intended but it is mostly healthy calories so I am not going to fret today because I am hungry today.

T - I don't have anything to say to you about the chocolates that you haven't already said to yourself. Hope you kick the cycle soon. I used to be addicted to having a cookie or 2 after dinner each night, somehow I dropped that over time but I know what its like to have the sweets/chocolate craving pop up every night.
That white bean salad sounds divine. You always have interesting foods that are new and unusual to me.

Thanks Molly Moo! *Head hanging in shame and fidgeting with thumbs behind back* I thought I was going to be spanked! Actually I had 3 pieces of dried fruit last night: a prune, a slice of dried pear and a slice of dried apricot, and it seems to do the trick for me. I got the same satisfaction of getting and eating a choccie and it is much healthier and only approximately between 60-100 calories. I sort of conned my sweet tooth there! I definately think this will do the trick. I was losing it there for a while with the sweeties.
This morning I missed my walk because my friend was not well, but I will definately go for a nice long walk tonight with my boyfriend, he also wants to lose his beer tummy and promised to go for an extra long walk with me later.
Breakfast was a huge bowl of Pronutro and Milk(518) Snack will be some chickpeas(50)
Lunch is a 2 buns with lettuce cheese and tomato (480)
Snack will be an apple(72). A yoghurt(106)Milk for coffees(130) Water 1.5L(0)
Supper is a rice mate(brown with sundried tomatoes & red lentils) and mince.(440)
Snack 3 pieces of dried fruit(100)

I had fast long walk last night that left me feeling as if I had run it . It was just under 5km's. I ended up on maintenance calories yesterday due to having extra fresh bread with my meal last night and then a few peanuts with my dried fruit. I am not dissappointed because I am actually focusing more on staying away from sweets which I have now managed to do for two days in a row.
This morning was my usual 6.8km walk with my friend and my half hour weight workout.
Breakfast was Pronutro and milk(260) Snack will be a small 100ml yoghurt(106)
Lunch will be a lettuce and boiled egg sandwich on wholewheat/brown bread(250)
Snack will be chickpeas(50) and a half of a pear (42)
Milk for coffees(130) Water 1.5L(0)
Supper is two little beef sausages(184) with baby potatoes in olive oil and garlic(209) and a green salad with feta and some dressing(180)
Snack is 3 pieces of dried fruit(90)
Calories 1504 Protein 65.4, 17% fat 53.5, 32%(olive oil, so not too bad) carbs 190.6, 51% and fibre 19.2

This recipe comes from the "Light and Tasty" annual cookbook, a collection of recipes from a whole year of magazines. It was sent in by De Loris Lawson of Carthage, MO It's become one of my favorites...the taste is great!
HOMINY BEAN SALAD
2 c. fresh green beans, cut to 2" pieces (I use frozen), cooked , rinse and cool
In a bowl combine the green beans, 1 can rinsed and drained kidney beans, 1 can rinsed and drained hominy, 1 can rinsed and drained black beans, 1 c. thinly sliced celery, 1 c. thinly sliced red onion, and 1 med. sweet red pepper, julienned.
In a jar, with a tight fitting lid, combine: 1/2 c. white wine vinegar, 1/2 c. minced fresh cilantro (what I use) or parsley, 1/4 c. olive oil, 2 tsp. sugar, 1 garlic clove-minced, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper. Shake well. Pour over vegetables and stir gently to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Yields 12 servings.
Nutritional analysis: One serving (3/4 cup) equals 146 cal., 5 g. fat (1 g. saturated), 0 cholesterol, 425 mg. sodium, 20 g. carbohydrates, 6 g. fiber, 5 g. protein.

Thanks Hisgal, I will try get the ingredients to make the bean salad this weekend.
I kept to last nights calories and am really enjoying the 3 dried fruit pieces every night because I have them without the guilt that I would have with the sweeties.
This morning I went for my usual nice long fast walk with my friend, but am now feeling absolutely terrible. I have a fever, the stomach is water and am nauseous so I haven't been able to eat anything. I was wondering if it was a bout of malaria(this is something we all get often here in most of Africa) but then my walking friend said she had the same on Monday and Tuesday, she thinks it's something her hubby gave her that he picked up on a trip to Sudan. I will just try and take it easy and see if I can stay at work.
Unfortunately even the thought of food at the moment makes me ill so I will update if I can eat anything later. I am dehydrated so I am struggling to drink water and keep it down and I am so thirsty. A bad combination!

I just thought to mention to anyone who would like to read a little more on Uganda via their newspapers to look up "Red Pepper" on Google. It is a local Ugandan newspaper that explains it like it is with a view of the interesting mentality of most. It will give most of you a good shock and giggle. And seriously this is how these people think.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Dumb question, but is English the predominant language in Uganda?

Molly Moo English and Luganda are the two most spoken languages, although there are so many different languages because of all the different tribes. I would say from what I have seen that almost 100% of the people can speak English. Swahili is also a very common language that most know, but our worker has told me that they don't really trust someone when they are Swahili speaking because they come from Kenya and are usually theives? Of course I don't know if this is true or not.

Sunday was a maintenance day and I had between 2000-2400 calories for the day.
Very happily I can announce that I lost 2lbs last week! The scale now shows 193lbs! I will continue on the no sweeties during the week again this week to try and lose the same again this week.
This morning was my weight workout and I will go for a very fast 5km walk(same as last Tuesday's) this evening because my walking partner was unable to walk this morning. When my friend and I walk it is fast but a lot of uphills for approximately 7km's , If I walk with my boyfriend it is a 5k downhill and straight roads with only one very steep uphill in the beginning and right at the end and I am pouring with sweat when we finish because it is very very fast going, so I really enjoy the change of pace as well.
Breakfast this morning was 2 and a half weetabix with skim milk(230)
Snack 2 pieces of dried apricot(27)
Lunch will be a slice of brown toast with a little tuna and grated melted cheese on(156) and a helping of leftover pumpkin(45) Snack will be a chickpea and green salad(140)
Supper is chicken livers(300) and scrambled(200) eggs with 2 buns(240)
Snack will be 3 dried fruit pieces(100)
Milk for tea/coffee (90) Water 1.5L(0)
Calories 1635, Protein 115, 29% fat 41.6, 23% carbs 193, 48% and fibre 30.2 (I can be very happy with the percentages looking like that)

Thanks MollyMoo. I really do enjoy the walking. Yesterday unfortunately I ended up not walking because the bf had a late meeting and it only ended after dark so it was just a weight workout. I did go for my nice long walk this morning though and will maybe walk again tonight.
For breakfast this morning I had two weetabix with milk (195)
We had a meeting from 10am until 1pm at the SA Ambassadors residence and were fed all sorts of fattening and wonderfull snacks etc. 1 mini pizza(75) 3 samoosas(400) 1 mini spinach/chapatti roll(100) 1 mini little eclair(70) 1 mini slice ginger? cake(120) 1 block of chocolate cake(300) 1 small slice chapatti with avo dip(80)1 small juice(40) These are estimates but I think if not accurate they are over in calories to be on the safe side.=1190
Milk for coffees (110) Water 1.5L(0) Tonights 3 fruit pieces(100) Roasted Chickpeas to nibble on(48)
Supper is curry mince and onion(200) with brown rice and sun dried tomatoes(246) and pumpkin(44)
Calories for the day 2106 Percentages excluding lunch were Protein 51.4, 22% fat 17.5, 17% carbs 139.5, 61% and fibre 18.4 Would have been ok percentages. I am sure my carbs and fat went up quite a lot with the lunch goodies.

| I was just thinking that when women rub oil on their skin/body. Your skin is supposed to absorb that oil, so does that mean that ones calorie intake would be higher when we do that? Once a week I rub olive oil(not the cooking one, the one you get at a pharmacy) all over my body/skin because it keeps the skin nice and soft and supple. Do I have to include all those oil calories in my diet? Any comment/advice anybody?

This morning was back to my nice long morning walk with my friend.
Breakfast was weetabix(actually on the box it shows "Sunny bix") (265) This is a South African make so it's not gross like the European one which just becomes mush as soon as you put milk in it. Snack is a peach bio yoghurt (160)
Milk for coffee (110) Water 1.5L(0) Tonights dried fruit (100)
Lunch is a brown toasted cheese, onion and tomato sandwich(310) Bean salad for a snack(223) And roasted chickpeas to nibble on (36)
Supper will be pork & vegetable stir fry (345) with rice.(154)
Calories for the day 1712 Protein 89.8, 21% fat 34.1, 18% carbs 264.9, 61% fibre 36.6(just a few beans and lentils and it gives me all the fibre i need)
I had 3 maintenance days last week and I lot 2lbs again so I will increase calories a little to see if it can happen again this week. I am thinking it was a combination of dropping the sweets/chocolates at night and upping calories a little with more fibre rich foods that could have done the trick. I think my calories were too low previously and that is why I was loosing so slowly and so little.

I had to google "braai" because I was unfamiliar with that term and after seeing the images now I am soooo wanting a barbeque. At least you have 900 calories left. Good luck T, keep your cool, get a good walk in and have a great time. Don't forget some veggies in there somewere....just a little bit....I know weekends are difficult. Cheers. Have fun!!

Thanks MollyMoo! The braai's were both wonderful and I mad good and bad choices . On the friday night one I didn't eat too much, but I did have too much red wine . On the Saturday braai I had lots of salad and didn't drink anything other than diet coke but then I had lovely fattening garlic bread and a Malva pudding afterwards as well. At least the scale stayed the same and didn't go up this morning. I don't think calories were too much of a problem this weekend but the wine was definately a no no. I really must make an effort to eat lots more veggies this week. I also want to now try and keep the calories below 1600, preferably at around 1400 to see how weight loss will go for the week at those calories.
I had my wieght workout today but have not yet gone for my long walk due to rain. Hopefully will do so this evening.
Breakfast this morning was Instant banana/caramel oats with cinnamon(233) and a small yoghurt.(106) Some roasted chickpeas as a snack(36)
Lunch will be mashed pumpkin with canola light (90) and tinned chickpeas(120) Snack will be pineapple(107)
Supper is brown rice with red lentils(227), sausages(315) broccolli(55) and pumpkin(25) Dried fruit(100)
Milk for coffees(90) Water 1.5L(0)
Calories 1366 Protein 78.1, 23% fat 35, 23% carbs 188.5, 55% and fibre 30.9
I have managed to keep the sweets and chocolates away and only had 1 chocolate for the week last week and that was yesterday. I even ended up not enjoying it as it was too sweet. One gets unused to it fast.

Yesterday calories were 1650 due to some crackers and popcorn, I was hungry! I did manage to go for my walk in the evening and will have to walk again tonight because of all the rain again this morning. It's the rainy season for a month or two again and it seems to be in the mornings this last week or so.
Breakfast was instant banana/caramel oats with cinnamon and crushed peanuts. (250)Snack will be a small strawberry yoghurt(106) and pineapple(107)
Milk for coffee(90) Water 1.5L(0)
Lunch will be crackers with NF cottage cheese(120) Brocolli, cauliflower and canned chickpea salad(250)
Supper will be curry chutney pasta with mince(500) and a bun(120) Snack will be dried fruit pieces(100)
Calories for the day 1567 Protein 81.8, 21% fat 37.4, 21% carbs 229, 58% and fibre 35.5
I find it very hard to try and have a lower carb percentage but a high fibre amount. It seems that most high fibre foods are high in carbs as well.

Yesterday ended up unplanned and a bit high with unhealthy calories. I had about 8 Pringles(72) chelsea buns(390) a meusli snack(90) chicken(300) masala chips(250) and a third of a Tex(70) and a glass of white wine (140) = Days calories 2100-2200. At least it worked out a maintenance day so I won't be too mad with myself. I did have my walk and weight workout as well. I seem to be feeling very hungry lately and I must really just try and fill up with lots of veggies. Due to rain I missed walking this morning so will have to go for a nice long evening walk again.
This morning I had weetabix with Skim Milk(250) Snack will be a yoghurt(106)
Milk for days coffee's(90) Water 1.5L(0) Evening dried fruit(140)
I have leftover grilled chicken wing(21) that i can have for lunch with some beetroot salad.(30) 1 slice of wholewheat bread with NF cottage cheese(100) and some pineapple for a snack(58)
I think I will steam some cauliflower and brocolli and leave it in the work fridge so that I can snack on veggies and keep full so that I don't binge on unhealthy stuff when it becomes evening.
For supper I am thinking of making a brown rice vegetable payella(310) with some fried Tilapia.(250) I will see if I can get some deboned Tilapia this afternoon.

My calories ended on 1600-1650 yesterday due to me having fried steak instead of Tilapia which I was unable to get, and I also had about 14 pringles, as well as nibbled on roasted chickpeas. I also went for a 3km walk last night.
Today I managed to walk 7km's this morning because it had stopped raining. and had my usual 20-30minute weight session.
Breakfast was 2 weetabix with NF milk and cinnamon.(180) Snack will be a yoghurt(106)
Lunch will be steamed veggies(50) Pineapple(60) roasted chickpeas(50)
Milk for coffees(110) Water 1.5L(0)
I will save all the rest of my calories for this evening to eat out because it is my sons music and drama practicals for his IGCSE's which will be taped and then sent to Cambridge for marking, and all the parents will be attending and then we will be eating out afterwards.
Calories so far 548 Protein 28.6, 20% fat 6.2, 10% carbs 98.2, 70% fibre 13.3 That leaves me 1000 calories for the evening which I hopefully will use wisely.

Fridays calories were approximately 1650 although in those calories were 2 pints of Club beer. One was ok but I ended up forcing myself to finishes the second one which was stupid, I should have just left it. This weekend I wasn't very good and I ended up eating lots of breads and fatty foods as well as chocolates and dessert . From today I am in a competition with my friend who walks with me every day, she is going on a 6 week high protein diet so that she can lose weight for an upcoming trip to Malaysia. She wants us to see who can lose the most weight weekly . We are both very competitive so I will definately have to make a much greater effort than I have been doing this whole year so far. Well, here goes...........!
I had my 6.8km walk plus 20-30 min weight workout this morning.
Breakfast was a whey protein, skim milk drink with a tablespoon of flaxseed(343) and two weetabix with skim milk(190) Snack is roasted chickpeas(36)
Lunch is a boiled egg(77) and raw carrots(27) Yoghurt 150ml(160)
Milk for coffees(90) Water 1.5L(0) Dry fruits(100)
Supper will be TVP pumpkin and spinach(200) Subject to change
Calories 1138 Protein 80.1(28%) fat 19.8, 15% carbs 163.7, 57% and fibre 22.9 If I suffer hunger pangs I will make some popcorn to snack on. I will try and keep to 1000 calories for two days and increase calories every third day to about 1800-2200 depending on calorie intake for the two days. I have been saying to myself that I know what to do to lose the weight, it is actually so easy, but I just haven't been applying myself this year. With my friend competing I better not embarrass myself and let her lose tonswithout me. The battle begins................

Hey Beth, one gets the hang of it quickly with the calorie counter. Hoofie I will try not too, but they are so cyyyuuuute especially when they are still little, you just want to cuddle them, and when they are calling to their mommies my heart goes total mush.
Ok today it was my usual hour walk and then half hour weights session.
Breakfast is 2 weetabix with NF milk and cinnamon(190) and a whey and flaxseed drink made with NF milk.(343)
I am going to be out for the rest of the day and haven't a clue as to what I will be eating for the rest of the day. I must make sure to be careful and make the right choices.
Im off and will update tommorrow again.

| Theresa, I realized I've been keeping up with the percentages, I just don't post them or pay too much attention to them. Maybe I should. Seems like I've been doing this so long I'm getting bored with the basics. I'm more into pouring out my soul these days. The diet stays mostly the same unless I screw up, which has been known to happen!
