I definitely have an all-or-nothing relationship with food which is something I'm working on, but you're right, gauloises, there does need to be some balance.  Perhaps that is my achilles heel.  ;)

I feel better and more in control this morning.  I know I have another work function this evening, so I'm prepared - mentally - for what kind of menu I might face.  Fortunately the caterer tonight is known for their organic spread, so I'm sure I'll have some healthier options.

That steakhouse last night, while delicious, only had very limited options for me as I am allergic to fish and when I tried to order the roasted chicken, I was told that it was an ENTIRE 3-pound bird.  Like really, who needs that as an entree?!?!??!  And sure, I could have brought it home, but it was a work function, so that's just a borderline etiquette issue.

Though today isn't my "official" weigh in for the week (that's Thursdays!), I had to go up and get weighed for the work challenge.  I discovered that I've gained 5 pounds.  I'm so angry right now.  I know this is how it works when you slack off - which I've done - eating desserts and not working out as diligently as I should.

I am going to go back to what I was doing that was working - focusing less on what others are doing and following my routine.  I'll probably be less visible on the other boards, but I will continue to post here in my journal.

Edit

I'm happy to report that it was not actually a 5 pound gain.  I knew something wasn't right when I got on the scale, even if I was fully clothed (including shoes) just like last week since the trainer is a guy and I wasn't getting down to my skivvies for a weigh-in with him.  I'm not sure what was off about it, but when I went up to the gym to workout at lunch, I checked again and it was only a one pound gain.

Still, I need to get back to my diligence and today's workout was one way to do just that.

Equipment:  Elliptical
Time:  30 minutes
Distance:  2.21 miles
Calories:   321
Pace:   13:57/mile

I also did two rounds on the upper body circuit:

Chest Press: 30 lb/10 reps
Chest Fly:  30 lb/10 reps
Lat Pull:  50 lb/10 reps
Triceps:  30 lb/10 reps
Row:  50 lb/10 reps

Okay, this is two days in a row that I'm back to my routine except that the air conditioning was broke in the gym.  I didn't let that stop me, even though I moved at a slower pace and felt so hot and sweaty and just totally nasty until I was able to hit the showers.

Equipment:  Elliptical
Time:  30 minutes
Distance:  2.15 miles
Calories:   304
Pace:   14:05/mile

This is probably going to sound strange, but I've found that as I've lost weight, I don't react to certain foods the way I used to.  A few years ago I was diagnosed with IBS which means red meat and cheese (as well as some other things) were off limits.  I didn't really change my diet for that or even cut those things out, but I am definitely tolerating them better than I used to.  Same goes for fish.  I'm allergic to shellfish, but I started developing sensitivities to things like canned tuna, so I stopped eating it.  But today I had a tuna sandwich on whole wheat bread at lunch and I feel fine.

I'm definitely getting more water than I had been.  Yesterday I had 40 oz. and today I've had 31 through lunch...so while I'm not quite at the 46 I wanted to be, I've made significant progress.  Carrying a chubby little 8 oz bottle of Poland Spring helps.

So far for food, I've had (~1,100 cal) or am scheduled to have as snacks:
2 South Beach 100 cal PB bars
1 small apple
1 medium apple
1 cup mixed fruit
1 egg/cheese sandwich on english muffin
1 cup tuna on 2 slices whole wheat bread

This leaves me with about 400-500 cal for dinner which I think might be a taco salad sans sour cream.  I've got a bunch of salad mix I need to use up before it goes bad and I'm in the mood for salsa.

Plan for tonight:
-Grocery store (apples, salsa, protein/snack bars, bananas)
-Health food store
-Dinner
-Jump rope (15 min)*
-Homework

*Originally I said I would walk 30 min OR jump rope for about 15, but then I checked the activity calculator and essentially, I can burn almost triple the number of calories per minute by jumping rope at a slow pace versus walking.  I guess it's pretty obvious how I'd rather spend my time.

I did okay yesterday in terms of calories (just under 1550--and that included two mini ice cream sandwiches).  I need to do better at planning when I stay up as late as I have the last few days.  I find that I eat my calories at dinner and have nothing left for snacks when I get hungry and am still up for another 5-6 hours.  Hopefully having fruit in the house again will be a little more helpful.

Speaking of which, I'm banning bags of apples in my house.  This is the second bag where I've had to throw most of them away.  I'll just go back to buying them individually.  :apple:

I did most of the things on my list last night, except jumping rope.  I was just too tired to think about it.

The challenge at the gym this week is to do 50 (full) sit ups in <2 minutes.  I typically do crunches (and I don't have the best form), but full sit ups?!??!   I didn't know if I could do it.  But this morning, my bf was awake and I asked him to hold my feet so I could try and you know what?  I think I can do it.  I'm going to try to get to the gym at lunch to knock this out if I can.

I didn't complete the challenge, but I still have two more days to give it my all.  I wasn't doing that badly (I managed 25 in 1:15) but I knew there was no way I could keep going.  One of the guys who was there said he didn't think I was breathing properly and that could have been why I couldn't eek any more out.  Even if I can't do this week's challenge, I know next week will be ALL ON ME - you get 1 pt for every day you work out.  So, no excuses.

By the time we were done and the trainer finished giving me some advice to develop my abs (which I am not complaining about since he was doing so for free), I didn't have a lot of time for a workout.  I only managed to get 15 minutes on the elliptical (160 cal), so tonight I will have to fit in another workout.  I have to stop at GNC to pick up a few things which means I can't get back to the gym or I won't get home before they close.  Priorities, priorities.  I haven't been out on Shore Road since last week, so maybe I'll bring my running shoes home and see if I can improve my time.  That ought to be good for another 200+ calories for the day.

Dinner will be a TVP patty and steamed green beans almondine.  That should put me at under 1400 for the day which means I'll still have room for an apple or a banana in the evening.  I'm also planning to go to bed early tonight (early being any time before my 'standard' 1 AM).

Tomorrow is officially weigh in day.   Friday a friend of mine and I have plans to join the Rec Center and get back to swimming.

I really don't understand what is happening lately.  That &*^&*%^% scale just won't budge.  I got on it this morning for the work challenge and it's just friggin' hovering at 210.  Why?!??!  I can't take it anymore!

Here's what I've eaten since Friday of last week, including any exercise I've done.

Lunch:  1 cup tuna salad (383)
Snack 3:  1 cup honeydew, sliced (64)
Snack 4:  1 cup Special K Protein cereal; 1/3 cup Rice Dream (140)

Water:  42 oz.
Exercise:  Elliptical 30 min (318 cal, 2.19 miles); Walking 30 min (175 cal, 1.67 miles)

I know I could cut back on desserts, but I'm staying between the number of calories I should have to lose between 1-2 pounds a week, but NOTHING is coming off.  It's not like I'm slacking off on exercise, either.  Last week I was at the gym 4 days @ 30 min cardio each with 2 days of strength training.  Then this weekend (when I'm usually inactive), we walked around the city on Saturday and took a long walk yesterday.  So I really don't get it.  The trainer at the gym told me to email him the diary and he'll see what suggestions he can make, so we'll see what he says.

I don't think I have the time or the energy to increase my daily workouts and the more I cut my calories back, the hungrier I get (duh), so I'm not sure what the answer is.

Edit

I should probably bring my own tuna and/or egg salad this way I can keep the calories lower (reduced fat mayo, which I'm sure the cafeteria isn't bothering to use).  It'll help with the finances too.

Hiya.  Just hang in there.  If you are eating the less calories than you are using your body has to get the energy from somewhere - and tht will be from your fat reserves.  It is really demotivating when the scales stick, but it will move again.  We just have to keep plugging away at it.

Just a suggestion.  I am a veggie, so I have no idea if what I am about to say is true or valid, andon the whole I think it probably isn't but........

I've heard that meat hangs around in your digestive system for a long time.  I notice that you eat a fair bit of protein and, if what you have written above is typical, relatively little dietary fibre.  Is it possible that your insides are so full up of semi-digested old meals that it is the weight of this potential waste matter which is weighing you down?  Might you try a high fibre breakfast or supper, just to see if it gets things moving?

If you do try this, remember that fibre will act to block you up further if you don't make sure that you drink enough fluid with it, preferably water.

Just a suggestion mind!

Actually, you're right.  And I have a painfully slow digestive system anyway.  After talking to a few people last week who know about such things, I've made an appointment tomorrow night to see what I can do about that.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I saw a show recently said that showed an MRI of a normal weight vegetarian and an overweight meat eater and the latter person had what they estimated to be 30 lbs of old food stuck to the walls of the intestines.  Gross!

My boyfriend swears by his shredded wheat cereal and I may have to give up my Special K Protein cereal for his if this is going to continue.

I made a note to myself that I should start bringing tuna and egg salad (not mixed together, that would be kind of gross) to work with me so that I know exactly what's in it.  So, I did a mini calculation and it appears that I would be saving at least 130 calories with the tuna.

My plan for the egg salad is to include only one or two whole eggs and the rest of a half dozen egg whites only, reduced fat mayo, and some paprika.  That should be 268 calories for the entire recipe, which is significantly lower than what I know the stuff from our cafeteria is.

The plan for tonight:
-Dr. appointment (til 7:15)
-Dinner (one chicken thigh, one chicken leg, one cup steamed brocolli - 421 cal)
-Homework (Africa-reading; CIS-research assignment)
-Snack or Dessert (under 100 cal)

If I follow this as its laid out that will leave me at just above 1,300 for the day.  And I exercised, burning just over 300 cal today.

Yesterday went pretty well.  I walked to and from my doctor's appointment so that was an additional 1.67 miles (175 cal) for the day.  I changed up dinner slightly because I realized that the chicken leg was more calories for less food, so I had two chicken thighs instead.  Now I'm just left with the legs, so I guess I'll eat them or they'll go to waste and frankly, I'm tired of throwing food away.  I also didn't steam the broccoli; instead I was in the mood for green beans, so I made a sautee (no oil) the way my nonna does with garlic, tomatos and black olives.  Mmmm, it was so good.

I have an eggplant and a package of tofu in the fridge that will have to get eaten this week.  I'm going to check the recipe board because just about everything I'm finding online regarding the eggplant is fried, and that simply won't work.

I have an appointment tonight at the Natural Alternative Clinic here in NYC.  I've always had digestive problems and I'm wondering if this is starting to impact the weight loss.  I haven't been so off my plan that I should have stopped losing weight so soon.  So, we'll see what they can do for me.  Also, my friend and I didn't get to sign up at the Rec last week (apparently they were "too busy" to take our membership apps) so we're going to try again this Friday.  Gah, I can't wait to get back to swimming.

Tuesday, 10/2/07
Breakfast:  1 medium banana (105); 1 South Beach Peanut Butter Bar (100)
Snack 1:  1 medium apple (72) and 1 oz. Live Active cheese (80)
Lunch:  0.75 cup tuna salad (300), veggie crudite w/1 TBsp blue cheese dip (100)
Snack 2:  1 fun size 3 Musketeer bar (63)
Snack 3:  16 oz. Jamba Juice Peach Perfection (200)
Dinner:  2 chicken legs, baked (with shake and bake) (440)
Dessert:  2 mini ice cream sandwiches (180)
Water:  56 oz.
Exercise:  Abs, Upper and Lower Strength Circuit (143 cal)

Exercise Routine
Abs:  50 crunches (on Swiss ball); 25 bicycle pedals; 10 leg lifts (2 lb medicine ball)
Upper and Lower:  10 reps, 3 circuits
Push Ups - 20, modified
Chest Press - 30 lb
Chest Fly - 30 lb
Lat Pull - 50 lb
Row - 50 lb
Arm Extension - 30 lb
Leg Press - 130 lb
Leg Extension - 50 lb
Leg Curl - 50 lb
Hip Ab/Adduction - 50 lb
Wall Sit:  15 seconds

Plan for tonight
-NAC Appointment (6-8 PM)
-Jamba Juice - Peach Perfection w/Soy Protein boost (200 cal)
-Homework (Africa - reading)
-Dinner - approx 10 PM (1 chicken leg, 0.5 green bean sautee - approx 400 cal)
-Karaoke - til 11:30 PM
-Sleep - 1:00 AM

Eggplant?  Neat coincidence 'cause that's what we're having for din-din tonight!  I don't know what foods you do/don't eat but I usually make an eggplant bake...which is just like lasanga except I use thinly sliced eggplant intead of the pasta, fat free dry curd cottage cheese instead of the riccota and either shredded chicken or tuna (tonight it's tuna) instead of the ground beef...with tomato sauce, garlic, diced onions and peppers and a generous layer of skim-mozz. on top.....it's awesome!

I didn't even think of that.  I'd seen similar recipes but skipped over them because of the cheese.  I don't think I've ever seen dry curd cottage cheese, but I bet I could find some good alternatives at the health food store.  Mmmm, maybe I'll make this towards the end of the week so the bf will get to have some too.  Thanks!

  1. I weigh 95 kg and that sounds way better than 209 lbs.  I'd rather live in Europe.
  2. I learned that of this 95 kg, approximately 55 of it is lean muscle mass.  This works out to be 121 lbs.  I guess this means I'll have to readjust my goal because 130 lbs (9 lbs of fat) just isn't realistic.
  3. It's hard to not think of the end result, especially because I still have so far to go.
Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Wow, am I feeling yesterday's strength workout.  And it feels good, actually.  I ate more than I expected yesterday - I had two chicken legs for dinner (way more calories than the rest of the chicken) and I had two mini ice cream sandwiches, so that was 220 more calories than I was expecting to take in.  However, I took a further train to/from the NAC appointment and went out of the way to go to Jamba Juice, so I ended up walking 1.87 miles, burning about 208 calories.

I didn't do karaoke and I was so exhausted that I fell asleep at 11:30, not 1:00 AM.

The appointment at the NAC was interesting, to say the least.  They recommend a series of eight cleanses, however, that isn't happening on my budget.  I'll try to get through the first four which are the ones that are the most beneficial and then we'll see how it goes.  They suggested I try a juice fast.  Personally, I don't see that happening.  Part of my problem is that I need to E.A.T.  It's primarily psychological with me, I need to chew something.  This is why I don't like soup (even chunky ones) and don't feel satiated on smoothies.  But if juicing is going to have greater health benefits overall, I won't snub my nose at it.  I agreed to incorporate one fresh juice per day and go from there.  I figure that it really can't hurt.

Speaking of juicing, I was surprised to learn that V8 isn't healthy.  Apparently it's just like drinking salt water.  The nutrients one should get from the vegetables in it are apparently killed in the pasteurization process or so I was told.  I guess it's a good thing I didn't like it anyway.

Wednesday, 10/2/07
Breakfast:  1 cup Special K-Protein Plus cereal (100); 0.3 cup Rice Dream (40); 1 medium banana (105)
Snack 1:  1 medium apple (72)
Snack 2:  South Beach Peanut Butter Bar (100)
Lunch:  Salad (chicken, 1 oz cheese, carrot, cucumber, 1 egg white, FF Honey Dijon dressing (385)
Snack 3:  1 cup mixed fruit (64)
Dinner:  2 Boca Cheeseburgers (200); 3 servings Green Giant Cauliflower in Cheese Sauce (150)
Snack 4:  1 serving Chobani peach nonfat yogurt (140)
Water:  51 oz.

Plan for the day
-Workout:  Lunch time - Cardio - 20 min HIIT on elliptical  Ate at my desk
-Lunch:  something other than tuna.  I'm getting sick of it.  Had a salad
-Pharmacy pick up  Got it
-Walk at least 2 miles tonight  It was misting out on my way home (I carried groceries though)
-Dinner: tofu, egg, veggie scramble  Had something yummier cause I had the calories for it
-Cook the rest of the package of tofu, steam the broccoli, make egg salad  Yum!
-Homework
-Watch the movie "Yesterday" for my Africa class  Excellent!

Hey I just wanted to shoot you a note to say thanks for your journal. It's awesome. I'm new here and I felt comfortable reading your posts. I'm originally a NYC chic and have been transplanted over the bridge in Jersey. My personal/ family life is still centered there and it is a completely different way of life than other places I've lived! By the time I make it to my families and friend's houses over there I'm starved from my trip and always overeat :)

I was laughing about what you wrote about your grandma- I can relate! She just moved in with me because she was having a hard time getting around by herself in the Bronx (the stairs in the building were killing her) and now she's at my place cooking ALL DAY LONG! It great to always have a hot meal, but I think I've been having too many of them! I starting my new plan of healthier eating and portions today.

Hi Abnormalapathy

I must tell you that I think all the excercise you do is awesome and you will definately get to your goal weight. Im highly impressed and you have inspired me to do a little extra skipping as well.  I actually never thought of how many calories it burns compared to walking. Something I must do extra tonight as well.  Keep it up girl

Darlene - Howdy neighbor!  My mom lives in Sayreville, so I'm in Jersey quite often.    I'm glad someone understands the pressures of these Italian nonnas!  Seriously, I often think I'm the only one.

Theresa - Thank you for the encouragement on the exercise.  Truthfully, I don't feel like I exercise enough.

Well it's 80 % more than I do.  By the way I must just mention that I have taken your advice about eating the fruit instead of the juice and it definately helps keep me fuller and brings down the calories daily.  Gosh it's hard to believe there are so many calories in a healthy fruit juice.  Now I eat the fruit and drink water instead

Official weigh in this morning:  207.5 pounds!!!!   That's a loss of 2.5 pounds this week.  That brings my total loss to 33.7 pounds in 27 weeks.

I had a great chat with the morning trainer.  He was really motivating.  I told him that I was anticipating another week where the scale didn't move, so I did an informal stint with the tape measure last night and I'm finding that I keep losing in my upper arms, bust and hips...but that I have gains in the thigh, calf and ankle.  I must be retaining all of that water I've been drinking.  He also thinks I need to drop the resistance back down on the elliptical machine.

I try not to eat before I weigh in, so I'm about three hours behind where I normally am in terms of food and water.  It's okay, I know I'll catch up.

Thursday, 10/4/07
Breakfast:  Tofu scramble* (190)
Snack 1:  2 medium carrots (50)
Snack 2:  1 medium apple (72)
Lunch:  2 slices low carb whole wheat bread (120); egg salad (111)
Snack 3:  Jamba Juice - Peach Perfection w Soy Protein boost (200)
Dinner: 2 Boca cheeseburgers (200); 1/2 serving green bean sautee (91)
Dessert:  1 mediuma banana (105); 1/2 TBsp honey (30)
Water:  48 oz.
Exercise:  See below (304); Walking 1.32 miles - 25 min (136)

*Tofu scramble:   I learned this at a tofu cooking class recently and have discovered that by changing the seasonings, it's like a whole new recipe.  Mmmm.

The basic gist is that you mix 1 pkg firm or extra firm tofu (squeeze some, but not all, of the water out) with carrots and kale (no measures here, use as much or as little as you want) - I try for 2 cups carrots and 3 cups kale.  You can also use just about any veggies you want, but I learned it with these two and I like the way they taste together.

Spray a frying pan with Pam.  Once heated, scramble 2 eggs.  When thoroughly cooked, add the chopped kale and carrots.  Allow to heat through.  Crumble the tofu into the pan.  As it releases its water, it will help soften and steam the veggies.  Mix until veggies are as cooked as you like them (I like mine really soft, and the mixture pretty dry).

For seasonings -  I always use pepper, garlic, and onion powder.  Sometimes I add a few TBsp of a Thai peanut sauce.  But that can be salty.  Last night I added Sazon and Adobo and it's really good like this too.  I eat this in 4 servings.  Cal - 190.

Plan for the Day
-Gym  Elliptical (30 min, 2.15 miles, 304 calories burned)
-2nd cleanse  I was told I should restrict all dairy, including eggs.  They suspect I'm allergic.
-Jamba Juice - either Peach Perfection (200) or ColdBuster (260)  YUM!
-Homework  Downloaded my ebook and am working on assignments now
-Dinner (probably a Boca cheeseburger and veggies) Yumyums!

YES!!!!  You go girl.   I'm cheering you on from the deep South.  I've been reading your diary and I kept saying to myself as I read it, "Oh, it's gonna come off real soon."  And, I was right!!!  Rock on!!!

Good, I'm glad it helped.  I used to drink juice quite often and it would spike my sugar in ways the fruit just doesn't do, so now I try to just stick to the fruit.  I don't know how it is for you in Uganda, but here in the US they seem to add sugar and high fructose corn syrup to things that don't even need it, so commercial juices seem to be mostly from concentrate and full of more than just the natural fruit sugars.

I saw that you're walking to work now - that is great!  My bf wants to do the walk we did last weekend again this weekend.  He thinks he might attempt to make it back too (that would be almost 9 miles roundtrip).  Not sure if it'll happen or if we'll even be able to move on Sunday, but every little bit of exercise helps.  Keep it up!

Thanks, DG.  I really wasn't so sure, to be honest.  I was getting incredibly upset over it.

This has been a fantastic week.  I had some weight loss.  I had two cleanses.  I've been exercising.  I've been eating a lot cleaner than I had been for a few weeks.  I feel good.  Now we're heading into the weekend (which can make or break me for the week), but I feel prepared.

It turns out that my bf's friends aren't coming over tomorrow so we have the whole day free to spend together (we have different schedules during the week, so even though we live together, we rarely see each other).  We're supposed to have really nice weather, so I'm hoping we can get outside and enjoy it.  Maybe that will be in the form of a walk along the shore, or the loop at Prospect Park, or who knows what else?  On Sunday, an art show that my father is in will open, so I'll head out to Staten Island to attend that.

A friend and I were supposed to go swimming tonight at the Rec Center, but she's now saying she's not sure if she's up to it.  And we don't have memberships yet, so I have to call this afternoon and make sure a member rep will be available if we head out there.  I really want to swim - and might anyway - whether she goes or not.  I don't know yet.  In any case, I have to get to the gym at lunch time so I can earn another point towards the challenge for the week.

Dinner:  1/6th spinach pie (370)
Dessert:  1 cup strawberry ice cream (260)
Water: 40 oz.

-Open Rec Center membership
-Swim (30 minutes) I did 20

I started feeling nauseous about 15 minutes into my swim last night, so I didn't do nearly as much as I wanted.  By the time I got home, I was feeling pretty lousy, but I stayed up til about 1 AM.  I slept in this morning and ended up not having breakfast until about 10:30 which just threw off my whole day.

Then I knew I had to just bite the bullet and get the bathroom cleaned.  I hate cleaning the bathroom because the combination of the tilex and soft scrub kills me.  I swear that stuff is just toxic.  But it's done, and the new shower curtain is up.  Now I have to get the super in to re-do the caulking and all will be right with the world.

Other than that, I didn't do much today.  The "really great" weather we were supposed to have turned out to be 85 degrees and humid, so we only trekked out to the pharmacy and the hardware store.  If it cools off tonight, maybe we'll take a walk down to the shore.

Saturday, 10/6/07
Breakfast: 1 cup Special K Protein Plus (100); 2/3 cup Rice Dream (80); 1 medium banana (105)
Lunch: 1.5 cups yellow rice (360); 1/2 cup grilled chicken (115); 1/2 cup black beans (109); 2 small  flour tortillas (196)
Dinner:  3 oz grilled turkey breast (130); 1 cup steamed broccoli (54); 1 cup butternut squash soup (90)
Dessert:  3 banana and peanut butter fritter (no oil) (177)
Snack:  1 South Beach PB Bar (100)

I went to the show that my father was exhibiting in yesterday afternoon.  I spent most of the day on my feet serving drinks - which I didn't mind.  At least it gave me something to do.  The downside to this is that I was stationed right in front of the cookies, not to mention the rest of the spread.  I can't exactly quantify what I ate at the show, so I have my best estimate below.

Sunday, 10/7/07
Breakfast: 1 cup Special K Protein Plus (100); 2/3 cup Rice Dream (80)
Snack (show): 5 crackers (75); 1 cup carrots (52); 2 TBsp French Onion Dip (100); 5 Pepperidge Farm cookies (175); 2 slices pepperoni (52); 6-1/2 inch cubes of cheese (190); 2 Starburst candies (40); 6 oz. Coca Cola (73)
Lunch: 1 hamburger (no bun) (278) 2 cups french fries (400); 3 onion rings (92)
Dinner: 12 oz almond bubble tea (360); 1 cup chicken pineapple rice (260)

That's terrible.  I came in at over 2,300 calories for the day.  But I'm not going to beat myself up over it because that is really the most honest reflection of what I ate and we all have days like these.  Besides, I did learn an important lesson yesterday:  when I don't eat right, I still have problems with my glucose levels.  I paid for that bubble tea with a sugar spike to 140 that left me feeling pretty miserable for the rest of the night.

In other news, I'm working today, though I'm hoping they let us leave a bit early today.  That'd be nice.  I probably won't go to the gym, but will instead walk to and from my appointment tonight, which will be close to 2 miles.  I still have a half turkey breast in the fridge so I'll grill that up for dinner and have it with some veggies and some of my leftover rice from last night; depending, of course, on how well the rest of my day goes.

Monday, 10/8/07
Snack: 1 South Beach PB Bar (100)
Breakfast: 1 egg (70); 1 slice cheese (45); 1 sandwich size English Muffin (190)
Snack: 1 cup red seedless grapes (110)
Lunch: 1 cup yankee bean soup (101); 1 hamburger bun (110); 1 turkey burger (150)
Snack: 1 South Beach PB Bar (100)
Dinner: 3 oz grilled turkey breast (130); 1/2 cup rice (130); 1 cup green bean sautee (90); 1 cup steamed broccoli (54)
Water:  46 oz.
Exercise:  Walking, 1.3 miles, 40 minutes (150 cal)

I'm combatting all kinds of womanly ickiness right now but probably the worst of it is the general malaise.  I went to bed at 9:00 PM last night and while I'm sure I needed the rest, it also put me really far behind.  So now I'll have to rush home tonight to take an exam in my Research and Statistics class, which I'm really not looking forward to.

So, I know I need to make myself get to the gym today.  I know I'll feel better if I do at least a half hour of cardio.  But at the same time, I just don't even feel like I have the energy to do anything.  We'll see how it plays out.  I'm sure a lot of it will depend on how my morning at the office goes.

Tuesday, 10/9/07
Breakfast: 1 cup Special K Protein Plus (100); 1/2 cup Rice Dream (60)
Snack: 1 Stonyfield Farm fat free black cherry yogurt (130)
Snack: 1 small banana (90)
Snack: 1 medium apple (72)
Lunch: 1/2 cup rice (115); 1/2 unit turkey breast, grilled (60)
Snack: 2 vegetable rolls (180); 2 TBsp duck sauce (84)
Snack: 1 Ferrero Rocher (73)
Dinner: 4 oz grilled hanger steak (213); 1 cup rice (230); 2 TBsp sour cream (54); 1/2 can Sprite (70)
Water: 32 oz.

I can't complain about the score I received on the exam (87) because not only did I not study, I didn't even read the chapters we were being tested on.  So, I'll take a high B.  I also waited til the last minute to take it and the exam froze on me, so there ya have it.

I was in bed again last night by 10:00 PM.  I feel like I am moving in slow motion.  My outward appearance belies how absolutely miserable I feel today.  I'm sure a cold is coming on thanks to a coworker sneezing all around me yesterday and then getting stuck in a very chilly rain yesterday afternoon while wearing a sleeveless shift.  Of course I'm doubling up on vitamin C and trying to take it easy so I don't drive my immune system over the edge.

Wednesday, 10/10/07
Breakfast: 1 cup frosted mini wheats (190)
Snack: 1 Stonyfield Farm FF Yogurt - Raspberry (130)
Snack: 1 South Beach PB Bar (100)
Snack: 1 medium banana (90)
Lunch: 2 slices low carb whole wheat bread (120); 1 TBsp peanut butter (90)
Snack: 1 Pepperidge Farm Milk Chocolate Macadamia cookie (160)
Dinner: 3 oz grilled chicken breast (141); 1/2 cup spinach, sautee (20); 1 cup yellow rice (230)
Dessert: 1 red velvet cupcake (250)
Snack: 1 mini Babybell light cheese (50)
Water: 29 oz.

My bf, who has never cooked for me in the 3+ years we've been together has decided that since he has the day off today, he's going to make chicken francese over spaghetti.  "It's not that healthy, though," he warned me last night.  And I assured him that I'd find ways to cut the calories down.  Whole wheat pasta rather than regular semolina, soy flour instead of breadcrumbs, foregoing the egg dip altogether, using my fake butter (50 cal for 2 TB which is significantly less than the real deal).  Okay, so maybe mine won't taste as good, but tomorrow is weigh-in day and I really don't want to jeopardize the progress I've made so far.

sorry to hear that you are feelingl so down and out.l  did the weatherl get nasty in ny yet?  starting to get yucky here- that always has a negative impact on my mood.

i love finding ways of making unhealthy (or highl cal and/or high fat) foods better. what's so neat about it is that you discover new flavors... or you find that the healthier version tastes the same as the less healthy one.  it's fun to experiment in the kitchen!  and when you eat it the healthier way, don't you feel so much better about yourself?

oh yeah, and YAY! to boyfriends cooking!!

Yesterday was supposed to be 78 and our "official fall weather" was supposed to start today.  But the temp never got that high and the rain came early.  I think I have the opposite of S.A.D. in that I generally don't like summer, but LOVE the fall.  October is typically my favorite month, but we're almost at mid-month already and it's only now beginning to feel like it should have 2 weeks ago.  On top of all of that, I have the beginnings of a cold (I'm sure).

Well, the boy called and said he wanted to make me happy by cooking and he doesn't think making me something that isn't healthy is going to make me happy, so he wants to treat me to dinner out instead - at least that way I can order what I want.  He picked a place we know well where there are a lot of healthy options that taste great.  I think that's an even better compromise - and I still get to tease him about not ever cooking.

Today was my official weigh in day and I lost (drum roll, please!) 3 pounds!  This brings me down to 204.5 which is a loss of 35.7 pounds in 28 weeks.  I am totally stoked!  I didn't have time to do my measurements this morning, so I'll do them tomorrow, instead.

My bf took me out for dinner last night, which was really delicious.  I had a grilled chicken breast with sauteed spinach and yellow rice.  I only ate half of what was on my plate and brought the rest home.  I could have kept eating, but I just decided I wasn't touching it, put my fork down and then pretended it didn't exist.  My bf, who lucky for him has never had a weight problem and can eat anything, literally ate like an insane person yesterday.  His "lunch" was almost an entire bag (minus the 1 I had) of Pepperidge Farm Milk Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies.  That was 1,120 calories!  Then when we went to dinner, he ate his entire meal - two breasts of chicken francese, rice and carrots.  A part of me is jealous that he can eat like this, never has to work out and looks amazing.  On the flip side, I realize that I don't have his genetics and I will always have to work on my appearance.

I also did really good at my favorite cupcake place.  I bought ONE cupcake and let myself take time to enjoy it too.  Normally I could just stuff three or four of them in my face without even tasting them.  Buying one means I won't eat more than that and since it's a mile out of my way, means I won't walk all the way back to get more.

Thursday, 10/11/07
Breakfast: 1 egg and cheese sandwich (305)
Lunch: 1 cup split pea soup (180); 1 slice sourdough bread (120); 2 slices cheddar cheese (90)
Snack: 1 cupcake (250) -to celebrate a coworker's bday
Dinner: 3 oz grilled chicken breast (141); 1/2 cup spinach (20); 1 cup yellow rice (230)
Snack: 1 medium banana (105)
Water: 34 oz.
Exercise:  Dancing, 35 min (248 cal)

Measurements
I know I won't leave myself enough time in the morning to do my measurements tomorrow, so I went ahead and did them tonight anyway.  I am totally stoked!  I've lost almost 28 inches overall:

Neck: -2.1
Wrist: -1.25
Upper Arm:  -3
Bust:  -5
Waist:  -8
Hips:  -4.5
Thigh:  -4.75
Calf: 0.25 (gain)
Ankle:  0.75 (gain)

I think you're doing great! I admire the fact that you can eat only one muffin, I probably couldn't! You know, you could walk one mile to the muffin place and get one and than walk another mile back home. All that walking should cancel out the calories of the muffin! Nah, maybe not! Don't listen to me!  I'm

You're doing wonderfully and you have to reward yourself every now and then.

Congrats!

Don't get me wrong...if there were three in front of me, I'd eat all three.  What saved me is that there was only one.

Hey Yay for you!!!!  And ditto for pushing the plate away without being totally full....that's one I keep plugging away at doing myself...with no luck so far:sad:.

Oh, and nice having a bf willing to cook...can't say the same here.  My boy's idea of cooking is "I'll make stir fry for dinner"...then proceeds to ask me to chop this, chop that, and (this one actually kinda ticked me off) "run to the store for a ginger root"...yeah nice dinner "you" cooked there bubba!

Have you tried using smaller plates?  At home I serve my bf on our giant Japanese plate or on one of the larger ones from our set, but serve myself on the smaller plates.  Food cues are more visual for me, so this is something that helps to curb it.  At dinner last night, I asked for the takeaway container as soon as my meal was brought out so that I didn't even see the rest of it.  Waiters always look at me strange when I do this, but you know what?  Who cares?!?!?  They won't be the ones having to pay for it later, I will.

Well, the boy hasn't cooked yet.  So we'll see how it all turns out when/if he ever does.  ;)

I am a horrible meal planner. No kidding, I don't know what is good for you and what isn't. There are things I thought were good for you until I started reading the labels. Last night I was wandering around the store picking up items and checking the labels so I could get into cooking my own food instead of running to Subway or McDonalds all the time. I couldn't find "good for you" items that I'd eat. I have absolutely no imagination. So, I thought I'd surf through people's diary to see what others are eating. I was able to get some pretty good ideas in your diary, but I have some questions...

What is Yellow Rice? I've heard of white, brown and wild, but not yellow. Do you put anything on it? Is it any good? Or, is it better than brown. ;-)

I'm going to try steamed broccoli, along with other cooked vegetables. I'm not a big vegetable eater, especially when it's cooked. But, I'm adopting a new attitude. Eat for results, not for taste. Well, I have to have SOME taste.

I have a small plate and could have really used it last night. Spaghetti and meatballs apparently is my downfall. I can never remember to use the small plate. I may have to recruit my kids into making sure dad gets that plate. Make it a game for them.

Anyway, thanks for putting your meals here!

Hmmm, I haven't tried the smaller plate thing...but I suspect that wouldn't help much - it's not so much a visual cue as a physical feeling.  The problem is not eating too much, or eating beyond fullness, it's just trying to eat and stop right before fullness.  Honestly I'm tempted to abandon the attempt altogether.  I don't tend to give up easily, but I'm thinking this just might not be the "right time" for me to pursue this particular path...everyday I have a new theory why it's so difficult for me (beyond the obvious one that I'm greedy:grin:)...my present theory de jour is that it's related to my (surpressed) leptin level...stay tuned, I'm sure I'll have a new theory tomorrow:grin:
