I am OBSESSED  with losing weight!  And, well I should be – as I am clinically obese.  That is such a harsh word – obese :crying:.  Just 10 years ago I weighed in at 106 pounds!  But, combine age with 10 years playing with trying to quit smoking  – over 70 pound gain!  This week I celebrate 4 months of being smoke free!! :grin::grin: (On my way to being a more healthy – active person!)  When I quit back in October – I decided to indulge myself  :pig:– and ate whatever I wanted.   I was already overweight then.   I believe part of my weight gain was the various attempts to quit over the past 10 years.  I’d quit for 6 to 8 weeks – gain weight – then give it up and go back to smoking.  So, I was averaging 8 to 10 pound weight gain a year – along with several feeble attempts to diet .  I am currently increasing my daily calories consumption – to try to get my metabolism back to normal.  If what I have read here on Cph site works – then it really makes good sense.  I can see how I could eat a better balanced diet with more calories (I mean how do you get all the dairy – protein, etc. on a daily basis – if you constantly restrict your calories?)  I think it will be a bit unsettling to record what I’m eating on this forum for all the world to read – but, I’ll try my best!  :coffee:

Hi Hootmom,

Let me be the first to welcome you to the diary forums.  I've found everyone here to be very supportive.  I think it just helps to put down thoughts and goals in writing.  It somehow seems to make things real and therefore attainable.  Clear as Mud?

Keep posting.   We can do this together, and once again welcome to cph.

Thanks Patches and Hisgal.  I am really glad to learn of this Forum.  I have learned so much in the past few days just reading all the different posts!  I look forward to interacting with you and hopefully can give support as well as receive it.  I don't know - but I think I'm an "oldie" for this forum - but, that's ok - I'm young at heart!

As far as being an oldie Hootmom I don't think age has much relevance when it comes to our struggle to be healthy.  I appreciate input from everyone!  BTW I am 55 and have a 4 year old grandson!

Hi Hootmom and welcome to :cph:!!!  I wanted to stop by and say a big thank you for the thoughtful post you just made in my diary - I truly appreciate your kind words.:rose:

Congrats on the 4 months of being smoke-free!!!:shooting_star:  That's a huge accomplishment!  It was THE hardest thing I've ever done in my life.  I finally quit forever on Jan 1, 1994.  Hubs did, too.  There are still times I get the urge...but there's no way I will ever go back.  Keep it up - you're doing yourself a wonderful thing.

I hope you find this place as beneficial as I have.  Everyone here is so helpful & supportive...and I love having a diary to keep me honest.

I don't know - but I think I'm an "oldie" for this forum - but, that's ok - I'm young at heart!

Hey now!  I'm no spring chicken either (44)!  There's all ages here...all sizes...different programs/diet methods - but we all have the same goal of becoming healthy.  That's what important.

Glad you joined us!!!

Today I bought new food scale.  It is a digital one - the one I've been using is an analog one - and like any other analog device - it was "iffy" seeing if I was right on the 1 ounce or closer to 1-1/2 oz, etc.  So, this new scale will measure to the 1/10 of ounce!  Yay!

  My stupid stupid weight scale!  Here's today's weight:  7:45am:  166.5;  8:15 am:  165.5;  9:30am:  167; 10:20am:  167.5;  10:50 am:  166.5.

After that my hubby decided we should go an invest in a new scale.    So we bought one (albeit not very expensive) - and guess what?  It flucuates just like the old one!  Only difference is it weigh by .2 intervals instead of .5 intervals. :dizzy:

Decided that I'd set Sunday as my weigh in day (in the morning of course).  I will jump on the scale when I get up in the morning - weigh one time - then I'm going to stay off the darn thing until a week goes by!  I think I can - I think I can.  That is unless someone knowledgeable about scales tells me that not all scales act that way - and then I will take it back - and get a more expensive one.  My husband told me to get the best one I could buy - but, who knows what that would be?  I mean sometimes you get better quality for more money - sometime not!!!!

Oh well. I am really full since I ate supper :chewing: - and I don't have my 1730 calories in yet!  I sort of thought about going out for fast food - until I looked up the calorie count.  Holy cow!  But, I AM going to have to eat higher fat and calorie foods for the next several days - if I am going to get the amount of calories I need to readjust my metabolism - but, at the same time, not get TOO used to an increased volume.

I don't want to get so used to a higher volume of food  :pig: that it will be harder to have a calorie deficit!  I guess one thing I'll do is eat more Walnuts!  They are really good to lower Choleserol!

Oh, I also bought 2 (more) sets of measuring spoons and cups.  It was only $.94 for a set with both the spoons and cups together.  I bought a set to keep at work - and an extra set for at home.  (Now, I don't have the excuse that one was "dirty" - and not measuring.)

I'm really serious about losing this fat!!! :bear:

Hootmom, I think all scales do that.    As you go through the day, they will fluctuate.   You are drinking fluids, adding food to your body, or sweating it off, peeing it out, etc.......it's bound to go up and down a little.    As a fellow "scale junkie", I too have problems staying off the scale.   But, I designate one "official" weigh in day and that's the day that I record in my food notebook.   I try to always weigh about the same time of the morning, no clothes, and before I have any food or fluids.    At Curves, we are told to do our "weigh and measure" before we work out.   I guess I don't know why?   In case we sweat off some weight?   Keep tracking the food......I know it's a pain, but it's so helpful to look back and check your totals, and also see what foods you may be lacking (fruite and veggies) and what foods you should be eliminating (processed?)   Keep it up!   I was at 169 this morning.......maybe we can go down the scale together?

Hisgal:  Glad to know someone else has problems with the stupid scale.  I never know what to believe.  Grrrr:angry: - Yeah - maybe we can watch the numbers go down together!  But, it took me from Thanksgiving until last week to lost 10 pounds!  (I was at 178 then!)  So, you may pass me up.  I keep hanging in there - as I know that I'm eating healthier (I really haven't been the last few days - it's the week-end - and I'm INDULGING during this time of higher calories).  I have been writing down what I eat for 3 months and it has become sort of a habit.  A ritual - partly because I don't think my doctor believes me when I tell her what I eat.  I was using the weight watcher on-line point tracker - but, since I've joined this forum - I've been using Peter's calculator.  I guess that is sort of lazy - as I don't have to type everything.  One thing it has done for me - it has made me very aware of the amount of sodium I've been using.  Yikes!!!   I'm gonna have to do something about that!

This is just one of my favorite dressings:yum:    I use it on cole slaw mix, broccoli slaw mix, and if I've got extra calories to use up, I add fresh pineapple or golden raisins or raw sunflower nuts.    Yummmmmmmm:yum::yum::yum::yum::yum:

One of my other favorites is Light Raspberry Vinegrette:yum:   I make a salad for lunch almost every day:  romaine, cole slaw mix, broccoli slaw mix, onion, green, red, orange, yellow peppers, snap peas, celerly, and black beans & sometimes leftover chicken.   It's heavenly!   And filling!

Today I finally made it to 20 minutes on my stair stepper!  Yay!  My knee doesn't feel too bad either!  I think it's a little harder than just walking upstairs though - because of the resistance - so hopefully I am really building up some muscle.

I used the Beginning Workout from the You on a Diet.  (They have a free download with 3 different workouts - each about 20 minutes - Beginner, intermediate and Advanced).  I have a difficult time with it - ' I guess 'cause it's more than I'm used to.  I did my weights today too.  I miscalculated the time I spend on those free weights - I timed the video today - and it was 15 minutes - so I guess that's better!  (The DVD I use for weights is a "sitting down" workout for senior citizens.  But, I use 5lb weights - and I think it works my shoulders and upper body pretty well.  It also has a "balance" segment - that has really helped my balance.  (I have damage to my auditory nerve - doctors don't know how or why).  Anyway - when spring time comes - I'll be ready to hit the road with full force!

I have a Richard Simmons tape - Sweatin' the the Oldies2.  I used to use it all the time - and I really liked it.  It had everything you need in one workout - cardio (aerobics); weights and toning (floor workout).  It takes about 55 minutes - maybe I'll see how good my balance is and try it again!

I REALLY LIKE TO EAT!!!!:yum: :yum: :yum: :yum:  THESE EXTRA CALORIES I'M HAVING RIGHT NOW ARE GREAT!!!  I WONDER IF I AM GAINING WEIGHT?  GOTTA WAIT TIL THE WEEK-END.  Oh - that's hard to do!  But, it's better that way - 'cause if I AM gaining - it is better to not know - so I can stick to what I'm doing - and not get so discouraged.   I have faith that once I get my metabolism back to normal - that I will be able to lose weight with the 15 to 20% calorie deficit.  If I don't - I'll always say I should've!

Hi hootmom, I think we started our diaries on the same day! Isn't this site so useful? I'm glad I found it. I was also eatting too little calories. On the days I was dieting I'd shoot for between 1000-1200 calories, I'd go up to 1500 some days, but feel guilty when I did it. I love being able to eat more and not feel guilty, it's hard to not feel so full too while eatting so many healthy foods. How much weight are you wanting to lose? Are you wanting to get back to 106 lbs.? That's tiny! I haven't weighed that much since 7th grade. I can't even fathem (<- spelling?) being lower than the 130's let alone the 110's. Well, I just wanted to wish you luck :clover: and let you know I'm here.

Hey Hootmom - did you like the snow I sent your way from Illinois?

Winter stinks but I am looking at it as a chance to lose weight incognito beneath all these layers of clothing so that by the time summer comes I will be ready for the great "unveling" of the new me. lol

BTW your menus always sound so good.

Wow Hootmom! I hope those aren't all the calories you are planning on eating today! I hope you are just saving some up because someone special is planning some elegant din-din for you and you are banking those suckers. Can't say I blame you, though. Unfortunately, my beau doesn't believe in Valentine's Day (don't worry he's always nice to me ) PLUS he has to work tonight, so I am banking up cals for what? Actually, idk, maybe my pseudo-hubby will call tonight and need a Valentine, too!

Great job this week!

Well, I know Valentine Day will probably be over by the time you all read this....but, I hope all had a very good day!!!   We went out to eat - and I started to not eat dessert - but, then - I decided - hey, a little treat here and there didn't hurt anyone! My hubby got me some Sugar Free Chocolates! :yum: Bless his heart!  Yum!  I'm going to TRY to be good and only eat one per day - so, they'll last awhile!

It is really hard to measure what you are eating when you go to a salad bar, etc.  However, I DO have this one new rule.  If it doesn't taste fabulous - the I'm not eating it!  So, I wasn't all that impressed with my steak - so I didn't hardly eat half of it.  Hey...why poke something in my mouth that isn't that great?  I mean - if I go off my plan....eat too much....it better well be worth it!!!!

Tomorrow is another day. :bear:

A woman I work with brought in a cheese ball today.  Aaaargh.....when she offered me some...of course, since I've felt munchie/hungry since last night.....I took some.  She gave me a great big chunk - and I made her take half of it back.  Then I used my measuring spoon - found out I had exactly 2 tablespoons (hey - I'm getting good at "estimating" - since I've been measuring so long!)  Anyway - the closest thing I could find on the Nutrition calc was cheese spread - (bacon & cheese) - which said was 90 calories - so guess that is how much I'll count the cheese ball.  BTW - I have laughing cow light cheese wedges at home.  That would have been 35 calories with only 2g of fat (compared to the probably 8g of fat in cheese ball!) :chewing::angry::chewing::pig::pig::pig: Hungry...Hungry..Hungry.   I have some vegetable soup....probably should eat that now....it would probably satisfy me more.  But, it's not lunch time.  Why oh why am I so tied to the right "times" to eat?  Is anyone else out there like that?  I mean....I made some really great home made vegetable soup last night.....and I know that after I eat it I'll be satisfied.  But, still.....I hold out till lunch "time".  Sigh.....one more hour...then I'll have that soup.  Yum.

Tried to find my "Sweatin' to the Oldies" Tape - ended up using Richard Simmons' "Blast Off".  It's a 20 minute Work-out - and is fun (as long as no one is watching!)  I did a lot better than the last time I tried it - so my balance is improving somewhat - and my Dr. told me before that the more exercise I did with "quick movement" - the better my brain would become at "compensating".  Did you know that when you destroy that "Balance thingie" in your ear - that your brain compensates somewhat for the lack of balance on that side of your body?  Cool, huh?  Well, anyway - Richard Simmons is great for people like me that don't really like "Exercising" - he sort of makes if fun - even though you feel ridiculous.

Just how I feel when doing it......it is fun though, once I get into it......sure glad I've started waiting until the hubs is out the door:tongue:    His tape makes my legs a little sore...seems like he does a lot of things with the knees bent.   And the YBB is good for limbering up my back and legs.   I still have no balance when it comes to the ballet stuff:shock:

Wow...that really takes me back.  I remember having a couple Richard Simmons tapes in the old days.  I think one of the newer ones came with some sort of resistance bands or something? Hmmm...hard to remember - but I DO remember waiting till no one was around to pop 'em in LOL!  I totally felt silly...just like now with those YBB dvds!:dizzy:

Breakfast:  2 eggs,, bacon, french toast, 10 grapes & choc milk:  546.2 calories  (OK - gotta lay off the choc milk and fried eggs - bad girl bacon also!!!)

Lunch at Great Wall:  General Tsoa's Chicken & Wonton soup (I didn't eat 1/4 of what they served - but, hard to "estimate"):  450 calories

Snack:  Romain lettuce with 1/2 oz walnuts and 1/2 oz dried cranberries & 1 TBS Newman's Raspberry Walnut dressing.  5 Fat free saltines:  268 calories

For the rest of the day I plan:
Veg/Beef soup, 2 cups 262 Calories; Fat free crackers 5 ea, 60 calories; Hostess Light Cup Cake - 130 calories.  That will be 1716 calories.  Of Course above is subject to change - may decide on popcorn instead of one of the cups of soup.

:sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun::sun:
Sunday weigh in:  166.2  That a loss of 1.4 pounds!!!!  This is sooo significant - as I wasn't expecting a loss at this time - just expecting (hoping) to maintain - since I increased my calories to 1730 per day (up from 1200 to 1300)!!!!!  Here's what I say - if it works - don't fix it!  I'll stick with the 1730 for another week - see what happens.  Anyway - been waiting for this type of loss since the Jan 1st!  Thanks everyone for all the discussions about eating too few calories - that's what prompted me to try this!!!!
I'm a happy - happy woman!!!!:bear: :bear: :bear: :bear: :bear:

I was wondering if you have tried the egg substitute and turkey bacon.  Personally the eggbeaters are fine but I think the turkey bacon tastes like cardboard, but I guess even cardboard has fiber!

Keep on keeping on!

Oh I am soo hooked on Egg Beaters!! I use Healthy Choice Ham & Turkey slices they are only 60 cals for 7 pieces!I usually only use half a serving.. They are round like Canadian Bacon just much thinnier.. I also make my own ham cheese & egg macmuffin and it's only 230 calories... Makes a great breakfast sandwich:cow: Oh I throw it on top of my salad too!

I love Egg Beater's too.  :yum: The protein really sticks with me throughout the day!   I make an egg sandwich out of mine.........using non-stick spray, I sautee chopped onions and portabella mushrooms, then add the Egg Beaters and scramble the mix a bit.   When it is set, I put a piece of 2% cheese (cut in strips) on top of it to melt.   Then I toast 2 slices of Sara Lee Delightful whole grain bread.   I put the egg on top of that, with a squirt of ketchup..........an egg sandwich:yum:   It's 195 calories, 16 gr. protein, 3.5 gr. fat and 4 gr. fiber.   I should get some of that turkey bacon out of the freezer to add a little more protein to my sandwich!

Thanks guys.  I haven't tried egg beaters yet.  I should buy some and give them a try.  Of course - I don't have eggs very often.  I did try the turkey bacon a long time ago.   I'm with you Patchers...didn't care too much for them!!!!  I would rather do without the bacon than have something I don't care for.  (Although - I have tried thin slices of deli ham w/my eggs - and that's a good substitute).  I had my blood work done today to see if my numbers have improved in the past few months.  (Stupid me - why did I have bacon & eggs this week-end - right before blood tests - and after eating healthy for 3 months!!!??)  Oh well.....we'll see when I go to the Dr. on Friday.

And we are "conditioned" to eat at a certain time because throughout school we had "lunch time" and then at night when our moms cooked dinner (way back in the day) it was always at a specific time (mine was 6). So all I do is stop looking at the clock, eat a snack around 10 (keeps you from being OCD about "lunch time") and I am at the gym at 6, so I can't exactly freak out about whether it's "dinner time" yet, either. :shock:Besides, I freak out about TONS of other stuff. No time to freak out about food times, too. :caution:

Hi Hootmom!!

Just thought I would pop in and say hi!! I just got caught up on all the posts since you started your diary! Congrats on the losses so far, great job keeping track! As for scales, I was a scale JUNKIE too, until I threw mine away in the trash and only try to use the ones at the gym because these are the scales I have been using for 7 months and at least they're a tool-even if inaccurate-I take the average of 5 weights once a week and count that as my "weigh in" the scales always fluctuate-even the $120 scale we bought recently isnt even accurate!! It goes from 132-138 just by stepping on and off within seconds.

We also have something else in common! I QUIT smoking COLD TURKEY 7 or 8  years ago-can't remember the EXACT date-it didnt happen that way, I didnt set a "date" I just threw my pack of Capri Lights in the trash -and there were like, 15 left!! So, I was around 124-128 when I smoked and I got up to 152 over the last 5-6 years. I finally took off some weight but boy was it difficult!! My husband still smokes, too. He cut down ALOT but he still is a smoker THAT makes it even more difficult for me. Anyway, CONGRATS on quitting!! It was harder than anything I have ever had to do-almost as hard as losing weight and keeping it off!!:dizzy:

Anyway, I think you are doing great!! I am happy for you!!I will definitely try to stop by more often!!

Sturm's Oatmeal.  Well, Sturm's is the Brand name.  This is "Healthy for your Heart" variety - comes in Cranberry and blueberry (they have some other "organic" stuff).  I think the Cranberry is superior - but, a friend at workt hinks the blueberry is just as good.   Anyway it includes flaxseed and plant sterols - and tastes really good.  It is my breakfast of choice at work and even on some week-ends as I try to reduce my cholesterol.  I also try to include some walnuts in my diet for the same purpose.   I find out Friday how successful I have been.

Okay, so yet another thing we have in common...we eat flax for breakfast (I love flax flakes, I swear) but plant sterols??? I mean, I had to take botany last semester and as weird as my prof. is I don't remember her pushing the plant sterols off on her students. Is that a dr. recommended course of cholesterol reduction or what is it for? Is it like plant steroids? I mean, those great big huge watermelons, are they on the sterols???

And Friday shall be your day. I can feel it. You have been diligently sticking (haha---oatmeal---sticking---I made a (not-so-) funny) with your dietary habits!! So I know you will be great!

Thanks, I hope you are right about Friday!! Plant sterols are in lots of plants, cereals, etc - and they are supposed to help lower cholestrol.  I don't really know the science behind them, although I've read some......a friend brought me a box of this Oatmeal to try - and I really liked it.  I had been adding flax seed to my morning oatmeal (and she knew that) - and since it was in convenient little packets for use at work - I find them easier than bringing bulk oatmeal that I've added things to.   I sprinkle flax seed on my salads - always put it in my vegetable soup (along with lentils) - add it to vegetables.  It's (one of) my sneaky ways to get hubby to eat more healthy.

Hi there Hootman, just bopping bye to see how you are doing? You know I eat a lot of oatmeal too and I found that my oatmeal is more calories then the instant I bought from the store lol shooey my oatmeal with raisins and milk comes up to 250 calories and the instant is only 170 with a lil NF Skim Milk and much sweeter lol

But it got me thinking... I get an entire cup I'm sure the other is just a half cup :o) Hey you know I found some FF Hotdogs hey hey hey they are pretty good and only 50 calories .. now I need to find some FF buns lol:tongue:

I see that you have increased your calories to 1700 on the 18th I increased mine today to 1800-1900 it was always recommended by Nir & Fruitloop so I came up slowly :o) I am really getting in my exercise so I didn't want to put myself in a rut.. my RMR is 1765 and that was pretty much was I was eating.. so I know it is not enough with me doing the treadmill everyday. It's scary though isn't it, we were once so use to thinking weight loss meant starving:shock:.. I gotta admit it is fun trying to get all the food in.. don't have to worry abour going hungry when you are eating right Wooo hoooo

We'll I just wanted to hollar at ya! :o)

Just to add my two cents to your oatmeal comment, smallerme... I've always felt like the instant oatmeal packets are semi-processed so that you don't get all the filling effects of the fiber.  I like to make the old-fashioned cook kind (or better yet, a multigrain hot cereal) because the oats feel more filling.  I still add a bit of sugar, but it doesn't take much just to get a hint of sweetness.

Congrats on being so consistent Hootmom!  Sounds like you're well on your way to completely new habits - stick with it!!

I can't believe it's Saturday already!!!

SmallerMe & trimB:
Glad you stopped by.  You're right - you do get a bigger portion of Oatmeal than I do!!!  I used to make it from the Box - and add my own stuff - raisens, dried cranberries - even made me some "strawberries and cream" - which was a lot tastier - and more filling than the prepackaged stuff.  I made some this morning (with cranberries)- as I don't have any of the instant here at home.  But, we leave for work sometime between 5:15 and 5:30 in the morning - and I eat my oatmeal at work.  I just have found it easier to carry instant packets for the microwave at work.  This is a BIG improvement over the DONUTS or PASTRIES or Biscuits & Gravy (from the cafeteria) - that I USED TO have!!!!

- How are you liking eating the increased calories?  I think it's great!!!  I mean - I feel like I could stick to what I'm doing right now for a very long time.  That was one of the big hurries I was in about losing weight before - I thought - gosh - I can't eat like this the rest of my life.  (You know how all the diet gurus tell you that this is a "lifetime" change? - but, you feel like gosh - I couldn't do this forever!)  I think I've only lost about 1/2 this week.   But, I'm ok with that.  I plan to start zigzagging my calories this next week - to see what that does for me.

Yesterday was a wash for me!!!  I started out good - but, after seeing the Dr. - I took my sister out to lunch - and had Chinese.  I just don't know where to begin in trying to count those calories.  Then last night we went to the club and I had about 3 oz of ribeye, and - oh this is bad - french fries - and a salad.  So, I'll start my counting again today.  BTW - my numbers (cholestrol, etc) were relatively unchanged - which was sort of a downer - since I have really been eating healthier!!!  Wondering if eggs and bacon could have blown it for me?  Hadn't had them in a long time - then ate them the week-end before my blood work.  If they affected my numbers - then does that mean that someone could eat "unhealthy" for weeks on end - then a couple day before blood test eat healthy - and get good results?  I hope not!!!  Well, anyway - felt like throwing a fit yesterday - but, I'm all over it now!!!!
