First of all I'd like to say this is a great place!  I found this site referenced in a book I was reading called "Winning By Losing" by Jillian Michaels (the tough fitness trainer on the TV show The Biggest Loser).  This site is all that and more!

I'm hoping that by posting in this diary I will be holding my self a bit more accountable.  A brief summary of me:

I am 43 years old, female, married for 18 years, have one child who will be leaving for college in a matter of weeks:crying:.   I have been overweight since early childhood.  As long as I can remember I have had issues with food.  I eat when I'm happy, sad, excited, angry, depressed, bored...you get the picture.  I have had successes with weight loss in the past, but never permanent.  My biggest success was in 1994 when I joined a gym. I had no clue I would turn out to be a real gym rat...especially weighing 226 at that time.  I became somewhat addicted (in a good way) to aerobics classes and began lifting weights.  It was an awesome time that lasted quite a few years...unfortunately we were experiencing money troubles and it became too expensive and I never renewed the membership.  But during that time I became a totally new person.  I was unrecognizable to people who hadn't seen me in a while.  I had dropped 93 pounds - down to 133!  I went from a size 20-something to a size 6!  It was an awesome feeling...I had never been 'thin' or close to it ever.  Always the fat girl...now toned and fit.

Anyway, I wouldn't be here if that was the end of the story, right?  LOL  After all those years of hard work and sweat, I let personal troubles get the best of me.  My hubby and I both lost our fathers to cancer, my mother had a stroke...I let everthing consume me and once again I turned to food.  It's always there waiting to console me.  Somehow I got lost again.  Years later I got on the scale and wonder how I could let it get so far out of control.  You would think alarms would go off in your head when you gain back 5 or 10 pounds LOL.  Not me.  I gained back 76 of those original 93 pounds that I had lost.  Talk about wanting to just give it all up completely!

On January 1, 2006 I started over.  No more whining and excuses.  No more dwelling on the past...life is too short to stay so darned fat!:)  The weight is coming off, but ever so slowly because I am so hit and miss with exercise.  I have a lot of exercise equipment here at home so there really is no excuse.  I have a bike, treadmill, elliptical trainer, loads of exercise dvds, a weight bench, olympic weight set, dumbells, total gym, etc...etc...I wasn't kidding when I said I used to be really into exercise LOL!!!  I need to be like that again.  I am hoping this diary will help keep me in line.  Having someone/something to report to might give me that extra push.

That's about it for now.  This is a fantastic site and I am grateful to have found it.

Well, it was a good day in regards to the eating part; I stayed within my calorie limit and chose mostly healthy options.  However, I didn't fit in any exercise at all today.  I will make that a priority for tomorrow.

It's good that you're so committed and that you have all the kit you need right at home.

One suggestion:  as well as tracking your weight, use a cheap skinfold calliper (around $8 to $10 online) and track your body fat too.

Many people make the mistake of trying to regain the weight they carried back when... Trouble is, over the years, you'll have lost quite a bit of muscle, too.

And - when you're exercising, there's a chance that you might put on some muscle which will register as weight NOT coming off.   It might even upset you, when in fact it should excite you.

When you track your body fat % from where you are now to where you want to be, the weight issue fades into insignificance.   You need to know your weight only to calculate any changes in daily calories every month or so.

After all, it's your outline you wish to alter, not that bathroom scale reading (which nobody but you ever sees!)

Good luck with your campaign.

Thanks for the wonderful welcome!  I appreciate it very much.

Peter - As I was reading that book, I had highlighted her reference to this website so I would remember to check it out later...figuring it was just a simple place that listed calories found in foods - boy was I wrong LOL!  You have a fantastic place here. Thanks for having me.

nevd - Thanks for your welcome also and your tips!  I haven't purchased the calipers, but I do have one of those body fat scales by Tanita that uses the electrical impedence method.  I'm not sure how accurate they are, but it really doesn't matter a whole lot to me - as long as that number keeps going down!! :D  I am trying to gain a bit of muscle or at least preserve what I have left...at my age I really don't wanna lose more and have my metabolism slowing even more:shock: LOL.  I actually enjoy weight training...who would have imagined? LOL

Thanks again!!!

So far so good today.  I love weekends - it's great to have a bit more free time to fit exercise in.  Hubby's working, son is at graduation parties - just me and the dog WooHoo!  Nice quiet house and no one to see & hear me huffing, puffing & sweating.  And the dog just hides.:)

Well within my calorie limits so far.  I did 45 min. of cardio so far (exercise dvd 23 min and 22 min elliptical).  I'm hoping to get a quick weight workout in later on.  While it's still quiet....

Still pretty much on track.

Saturday - I did fit a 50 min total body weight session in later after the cardio.  I made it into a decent circuit-type workout here at home.  A little change to spice things up a bit.

Sunday - I did absolutely no exercise (my bad) but thankfully stayed in the lower range of my calorie limit.

Monday - I got a late start, I really don't like working out so late in the evening, but I knew I still had to do it.  I did a total of 50 min = 30 min elliptical + 20 min bike.  I was shooting for 60 min but ran outta gas from being so hungry.  I hadn't taken in enough calories today and it was no surprise when I started to get a little fuzzy LOL.  Hopefully I will plan things out a bit better tomorrow.

Thanks elliptical - I really appreciate you taking the time to read and post in my diary.  I'm obviously new here and just beginning to check things out - I will be sure to read yours, too.  I'm really hoping having a diary like this helps me be more accountable with the exercise...I guess I will find that out soon enough right? :)

Tuesday - 45 minutes of elliptical (including 20 min. intervals), 401 calories burned according to my heart rate monitor.

Adjusted RMR 1941 + (401 exercise) = 2342

Caloric intake =1630

-712 calorie deficit

I wonder if I'm doing this right...if anyone is reading this - give me a shout if I've misunderstood how to calculate.  The info I input was for a 43 yr old female, 5'4", and 188 pounds.  Then I used the adjusted RMR for sedentary.

Another good day; that is if I hurry up and get to bed before I do any damage!

:D

Exercise = 45 minutes (28 min exercise dvd + 15 min. elliptical)

I'll never do that sucky dvd again; my heart rate stayed in the very low range even with incorporating exaggerted arm movements.  I threw in the 15 on the elliptical just to get to 300 calories burned.  What a waste...BUT at least I wasn't sitting on the couch eating bon-bons LOL!

- 849 calorie deficit right now...but I may have a tiny snack before bedtime.

Hi Skipper - thanks for your post; total Scooby-addict here - but at 43 yrs old it becomes a little embarrasing LOL!

The exercise dvd I mentioned above was from a collection I bought on impulse at Suncoast about a year ago.  It's called '10 Best Fitness' and consists of 5 double-sided dvds equaling 12 hours of exercise.  Sounded great to me; contains everything from kickboxing, yoga, step, etc. I had only checked out a couple of the sessions, and it had gotten buried under others that I purchased.  I dusted it off tonight in hopes of getting a little variety - but booooo.   I should have known when something sounds to good...it usually is.  This particular one tonight was on the 'Fat Burners' disc; it was really lame...looked like it was possibly from the 80's by looking at the leotards LOL, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a fat burner for me.  I think I'll just bury the whole collection again...

:D

That's it...I'm ordering that darned Turbo Jam that I keep hearing about LOL!!!

hey scoobes,
I have to say I do my calculations very similar...used the RMR calculations from this site and add in my exercise...i dont ever count my 8-min DVDs in tho for some strange reason....anywho, its all just a real guess.....so im not toooooo stuck on the numbers...as long as I am in the negative!!!!  I write each thing that I eat and the calories it is worth....some ppl do a breakdown of their fat, sodium, nutriets etc...but I dont feel the need to b/c i have analysed my diet so many times I am confident that I am getting proper portions and nutrition......i do a spot check here and there just to make sure...but of course some days are better than others so I usually average 3 days and just look at the whole picture....keeps me on track....I do my 8-min DVDs from the 80's and BOY  do i know what you mean about the leotards....the guy in the video has this like jail-bird package hugging thing on that makes me wanna barf evertime i see it..but they work for me...and alll I can do right now is tone, so i gotta deal with them for now!

I plan on investing in Turbo Jam once my neck starts feeling better, skipper swears by it, and I trust her!  I'd like to try a pilates dvd too.....that would be awesome for my core i think....and thats where i need most work, my belly and my thighs....everything else is starting to behave but those spots....

alright ill stop yappin....have a good day and a good workout!  :D

Hi elliptical - I totally agree with your thinking of not getting too stuck on the numbers thing; I pretty much think of this an estimate to get a feel of how I'm doing.  I've always kept a daily record of my food intake...it's habit after all these years; but I've never done calculations like this before with figuring calories burned thru lifestyle + exercise.  It kinda gives ya a better picture of what is really going on.  I can use all the info I can get LOL!!:D

I'm still giggling about the guy in the 80s video you mentioned!  Sounds similar to these videos I have...omg, the lycra one-piece tights these guys have on - is this an 'exercise' video?? LOL  Eeeek!  And their hair!  It's big & styled... and awful!

Sorry to hear about your neck - I hope you're on the road to recovery.  I keep reading wonderful things here about those turbo jam workouts, so I finally ordered the package last night.  I really need something different to mix things up...just hope there's no 80s lyrca-wearing men in these!! :D

You mentioned Pilates; that's something I've wanted to give a try also.  I bought 2 dvds and haven't tried them yet.  I'm good at buying - but not trying.  One is Pilates for Dummies...I thought that was up to my speed...I forget what the other one is.  Hopefully someday they'll actually make it into the player.

Thanks for the chat - you have a great day & workout too!!

:nono:The last 2 days (Thur & Fri) were pretty bad days. No exercise at all...and eating on the road...and stressed out junk food eating once I got home.

I had an excuse...but there's really no excuse is there?:)  Our son (our one and only) is going off to college in approx 4 weeks.  The last 2 days we were all up there for orientation.  It really hit home  that this is it...my baby is growing up and leaving.  I know I'll see him lots of course...whenever he needs $ or laundry done:D but it's really rough.  The most stressful thing is financial aid.  My head almost burst when I read the tuition bill.  A loan that we were counting on didn't go thru, and now we're stuck coming up with an extra $1000/mo.  Everyone has that much disposable income every month right?   Of course my son will be working on campus, but they pay really cheap wages and that'll take care of some of his misc spending...beer $, etc LOL!  My hubby said don't worry, we'll work it out; but NOW I see the importance of saving up $ when your child is just a baby.  Too little, too late.

So, after all that I wake up this morning with a huge migraine headache, the kind where you start throwing up.  TMI, I know.  Hey, at least I can't eat!:D

Anyway, I am feeling a bit better in the pm.  Hopefully tomorrow I will be back on the road to progress.  It's just really hard not to beat myself up for the :pig: eating.

Feeling quite a bit better today, thank goodness.  Sundays are always laundry and grocery day (and other junk to get done before the work week) but I did fit in an intense 30 min interval work out on the bike.  Way below my calorie intake today though - gotta grab a good snack.

Today was a very busy day...Mondays...sigh.  Thank goodness it's almost over:D

Exercise: 40 min. The Firm Maximum Cardio Burn; but missed my resistance training this morning.  1 outta 2 ain't bad.

Still doing a bit #%@&! on the eating as far as intake goes.  I get busy and miss a snack here...or a meal there...I've got to get a handle on this as I really don't want my metabolism to start slowing down.

Excellent day - got a lot accomplished thru the day and saved plenty of time to get the workout in.

Exercise: 30 min resistance training + 30 min intervals on bike

Calorie intake today is just a tad low so I'll add a little healthy snack later.

A couple compliments really sent my spirits soaring today.  As I was cooking dinner this evening, my hubby came up from behind me and grabbed me at the waist and said something to the effect of  'Oh my God, you really are getting skinny'.  We both know I'm not...but it really made me feel good.

The other one came from my son.  He's 18 and rarely notices anything around him.  He made some sort of off-handed comment like 'Why don't ya buy some clothes that fit?'  I kinda looked at him like ummm thanks?  He said my clothes were getting too baggy and looked like #%@&! on me. Ok...maybe he could have said something a bit nicer - but I'll take it!!! My clothes are falling off! :D

That'll inspire me for a bit.

Thanks for the kind words elliptical!  :D

I was going to take a day off from exercise because I'm kinda sore...especially my thighs...but I just had to keep plugging along.  I figured maybe a bit of activity would work the soreness out.

Since I did the bike yesterday, I popped in a Firm video - complete aerobics & weight training.  The video is actually pretty good, got my heart rate up nicely.  It's about 60 minutes long; 44 min of alternating aerobics and weights...the rest is a separate weight workout for chest, then abs, then stretching.  Not bad.

Still too low on calories once again...a little under 1200 which I know is bad.  I will definitely grab at least a healthy snack.

Today was a very crazy day; it was late and almost 9:30 before I realized I didn't even cook dinner!  If not for my son - who wanted to eat before getting in a late workout at the gym - I'm sure I would have forgotten.  If hubs would have been home - I'm sure he would have said something! :)

I didn't get much exercise in today.  My Turbo Jam package came today, so I popped it in and watched the Learn and did the Burn LOL.  Since it's so short I won't even count it as a workout...but it was really fun!  I rewatched the Learn part again to practice and maybe tomorrow I will try the Burn a couple times.  I want to be sure I get the moves before advancing...I'll just add some other aerobic activity to supplement until I can get a full turbo jam workout in.  But it does look like it's gonna be fun.......:D

Ok, first time in my life that I've actually smiled the whole time I worked out!:D  There's definitely something to this Turbo Jam stuff.  Today was only my second day trying it and it was a blast.  I'm only at the Learn & Burn stage, but I did it twice in a row to get a 30 min workout session.  On the second time thru I pumped up the music and had an awesome time.  My heart rate monitor was measuring way in my upper range so I know I was working hard and sweating like a :pig:.  I can't wait to progress and get other dvds in this series!  This seems like something I'm going to wanna stick with, at the very least work it in around my other aerobic activities to keep boredom at bay.

Tomorrow morning is my weigh in...praying for at least a one pound loss.

Thanks elliptical, I know I should be happy for the one pound loss but it just gets frustrating.  It's sooo easy to gain a pound...but to lose a pound is so freakin' hard!:)  What else can you do but press on....and on....

It was kind of a lazy day today in between doing laundry and getting groceries.  I hopped on the elliptical for about 35 minutes until my knees got a bit too sore.  They're acting up a bit from doing Turbo Jam.  It's not a surprise, I expected it - the same thing happened when I started Tae Bo awhile ago.  I've just got to be more aware of my form and be careful not to twist.

are you being sure to warm up before hand and stretch?  like when i go to get on the elliptical i do it light for about 5 mins and then i get off and stretch then i get on and do my work out and then after i do a MAJOR stretch (if im doing my 8 min vids i wait to stretch after those)  its important to do that so that you dont injur yourself!!!!  Also, i found that massage really helps me when any of my joints act up from exercise....they  can also tell you how to do certain stretches for the muscles that are causing the pain (if thats the cause of the pain!)

keep up the good work!!!!:D

Thanks for your advice elliptical.  I do try to get in a good stretch, but mainly after the workout.  Most of my problems started from overuse injuries back in the 90s doing way too much high impact floor aerobics at the gym.  It flares up from time to time if I try a new workout - or get a little carried away and do some higher impact moves.  I've seen orthopedic drs and had an MRI in the past; they've never found anything wrong - they just keep saying it's inflammation.  I just need to knock my intensity down a notch, but that's hard...especially when I'm having a ball with Turbo Jam!:D  Hopefully if I can keep taking off some of these extra pounds, the stress on my knees will lessen and also the pain.

Hey Scoobees, I have the same problem with overdoing the Turbo Jam workout due to my own enthusiasm. I tend to feel my knees most with the lunges, and Chalene loves them because they are so effective. I have to remember not to go as deep as the folks on the video. I find it's usually not my supporting/working knee, but the one that is behind me.

The sculpting videos (non-cardio ones) have a lot of strength-building exercises that increase balance and form to the point that I rarely notice my knees now.:dog:

Thanks for mentioning that Skipper!  It's exactly that enthusiasm - I found myself jumping around during that 20 min w/o and I know I will be paying for it tomorrow:).  It's so darn hard not to - it's so fun ya just wanna PARTY:D.  Must restrain myself...contain that enthusiasm just a tad.  Thanks for letting me know you've experienced similar things - I can't wait to try the sculpting video, hopefully that'll help me too.

Exercise: Turbo Jam Burn and the 20 min. workout

I really, really didn't want to exercise tonight; I was kinda dragging...no energy. I made myself put in the TJ dvd and within minutes I was :D and sweating.  Once the music starts - the energy seems to materialize from somewhere...thank goodness.  I missed my morning workout, but at least I got the turbo jam in this evening.

Exercise: Turbo Jam Burn & 20 min. workouts

I was supposed to do either the bike or elliptical today but the dvds are so much more interesting LOL.  Maybe tomorrow, or possibly I'll try a different Turbo Jam workout; I haven't tried Cardio Party - not sure I'm ready for it yet but I could give it a go.  I need to get in another weight workout in too by Saturday.

Friday

Exercise: Turbo Jam Burn (15 min), 20 min workout, and Ab Jam (20min)

Today was my first go at the Ab Jam workout. The standing work was fine; the ab work on the floor was killer for me.  I guess my abs are weaker than I thought! :)  That'll teach me not to neglect them for sooo long.

I am giving Turbo Jam a break until Monday.  I should be mixing it up more often but I just am having too much fun with TJ.  Tomorrow is a weight training day and some cardio on the elliptical or bike.

Also, tomorrow is weigh in day...hopefully another pound will be gone!

Scoobees, I thought the ab jam floor part was too tough, too. But you'll be surprised how fast your strength improves. Abs are the one area you can work every day. I try to do the standing portion nearly every day and alternate days for the floor part. It really works!!!
I thought Cardio party was easier to learn than burn and the 20 minute workout. You get so many of the basics in the first two workouts, that the moves aren't so foreign when you get to cardio party.
Stick with what motivates you! Keep going!:dog:

Thanks for the encouragement Skipper.  I'm just glad I was able to get outta bed this morning!  Wow, my abs are pretty sore now...by tonight they'll really be aching LOL!  But it's all good.  I can't even imagine the floor part in the video getting easier, but I know you're right...sometime soon my abs will be strong enough to handle it.

I watched Cardio Party last night and I see what you're saying.  It's not so intimidating once you've learned the moves in the other workouts.  I can't wait to try it.  I'm just glad it's longer; I don't feel like I'm doing enough with the 20 min workout which is why I've been combining it with the Burn...at least that gives me about 35 min.

I was telling my hubby last night about how much I've been enjoying Turbo Jam.  He's not home during the times I exercise so I didn't think he even knew what I was talking about.  Then he said - hey do you mean that stuff with the elite 11 moves?  OMG, even he's seen the informercial LOL!!!

Today was weigh-in day - down another pound!  At least I'm still going in the right direction!  I'll post any exercise for today later...

Thanks elliptical!  Yeah, the videos are fun; I'll try anything that keeps me motivated.

Saturday

Exercise: 50 min total body weights & 30 min bike

Tomorrow I am taking the day off from exercise.  I fit 6 workouts in this week and my body really wants a day off; the knees are kinda sore, too.  I think a little rest will do me wonders.

Also, I think I need to double check approximately how many calories I need to be taking in.  This week I have been hungry quite a bit, making me think I'm possibly not eating enough to sustain all the exercise.  Or maybe I was just hungry LOL!  I really don't wanna mess up and not eat enough and slow down my metabolism...then I'll never make my goal.  My RMR is 1484 so I know not to go below that...but other than that I don't know what range I should be in.

In case someone is actually reading this...LOL...I am female, 43 years old, current weight is 186...my job is pretty sedentary, but I do exercise 4-6 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes a session; sometimes a bit longer.  I've been staying in the 1500 - 1750 calorie range.  Does this sound ok?

Perhaps a little bit low, but not drastically so. Perhaps you should feel less guilty about eating at the high end of your range (1750) as it sounds you're easily at least a "Light Exerciser".

How much to eat (figures includes a 15% deficit, using multipliers 1.2, 1.375 and 1.55, starting with unadjusted RMR 1484) Sedentary = 1514. Light Exerciser = 1734. Heavy Exerciser = 1955.

Nir - thank you so much for your advice.  I think you hit the nail on the head with the feeling 'less guilty' in eating at the higher end of my range.  That's something I need to work on.

I appreciate your calculations also.  I feel quite relieved that my caloric intake wasn't way off LOL!!!

Thanks for your time!

Sandy

Sunday

Today was a day off exercise.  I still watched what I ate, but did go into my upper caloric range as I've been hungry quite often this week.  I think a good day off did me wonders.

Now to rest up for Monday...I'm trying TJ's cardio party for the first time WooHooo!

I'm looking forward to your critique of cardio party. It may seem really long to you the first time. You'll get stronger fast! Work It Girl!:dog:

Skipper - WOW!  Cardio Party was fantastic!  I admit I was a little daunted by it's time length at first - but I really did forget about it once I got moving.  And just like you said - you already know the moves.  I followed along quite well, but I was a little slow with the squats to the side - kicks - squats forward & back - kicks....I was like HOLD ON A SEC - wait for me!!

Anyway, it was great...I literally sweated buckets...my hair was soaked and plastered to my head LOL.  And I can't wait to try it again!  I better start saving for some more TJ dvds.

See how addicting they are? I love those workouts where the sweat is flying. Gross, I know, but it feels so liberating. The post turbo jam high is amazing. That's what gives me the TJ Goddess feeling. I hope I can do it tonight!:dog:

Addicting?  Yes! Yes! Yes!  This is the only workout I can remember sweating so much (I honestly couldn't believe how soaked I was LOL - Gross - too much info!) but still having a good time and not feeling like I was dying...or just trying to get it over with.  Some of the sessions on my bike or elliptical are kinda torturous sometimes...are we done yet?  TJ gives you the awesome workout - but without that torture.  It may be a lot of work but it's more enjoyable for me.

The post-TJ high really is amazing...I'm still throwing jabs & crosses LOL.  My poor dog thinks I'm nuts!:dog:

I hope yours goes well, too Skipper!  Go Goddess Go!

My dog doesn't know what to do with Turbo Jam either. Just make sure you look where you're kicking as Chalene says. The first time I did a back kick I nearly launched Skipper across the basement. I'm not sure who was more stunned. She was fine, but does not play around my feet when I'm Jammin' anymore. She sits on the chair around the corner and waits to hear me pull out the gym mat for ab work. She loves to climb on my face or under my knees while I'm concentrating. She frequently brings toys to share as if that's why I'm there.

My older daughter saw your avatar. She wanted me to open your website. I had to explain that it wasn't an icon. She's a regular at Scoobydoo.com these days. I told you my girls love him. My husband does too. He's actually the one that got them hooked. You're not the only adult Scooby fan out there.:dog:

LOL Skipper - I'm finding that there really are a lot of adult Scooby fans out there.  What's really embarrassing is that my hubby likes to talk like Scoobs...sometimes it slips when we're out in public:shock:.  I've done it at work a few times too; thank goodness my co-workers are as nuts as I am.

So far I haven't launched my dog anywhere - poor Skipper! But he knows what's coming when I scoot the coffee table close to the couch.  He's a good boy and just curls up on the couch and waits it out.  I think I really scare him - the loud music, the punching and jumping around - me singing....  I would be scared too! And he does the same thing as your Skipper does when I get down on the floor for abs...playtime!  Jake licks my face, jumps on me, squeaks some toys in my ear, etc:grin:.  Except he's not quite so little; he's a shepherd/lab mix...as Scooby would say RELP!!  Couldn't resist.

Tuesday

No exercise...booooooooo!  I'm blaming it on lack of sleep; was up worried all night about a personal problem with my son...nothing terribly serious...but I overdo everything in life, including worrying.

Anyway, by the time I got everything else done, and my head together, I just could care less about exercise tonight.  I feel guilty as heck, but I know tomorrow is another day.  I really miss that feeling of accomplishment...
