When the talk turns to jewelry I can't help but put in my two cents... I have been a designer/goldsmith for 15 years.
I am glad to hear that a ball soldered inside of the ring works for OWF, some people find them very uncomfortable, so see if you can try a ring on with the ball before you commit to it.
Everyone's fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold weather. The suggestion by Skipperdox is an excellent one, to wear a tighter band to hold the loose ring in place, perhaps worth purchasing a thin band for that purpose. You can always have a stone set in or on the thin band down the road. Most importantly don't wear a ring that it too big, it would be heartbreaking to loose it.

i recently got my ring resized.. lol- now i can actually gauge the recent weight gain because i can't get the dran thing off! good motivation to get back on the saddle though. i can't wait till mine gets loose again.
and yes, i have the same problem with swelling. it's amazing how much the fitting differs over the course of even a few hours.
congrats on being able to wear your rings again. doesn't it feel fabulous?!

Oh yeah - jewelry talk, my ears are always open! Rings were sort of a passion of mine for quite a long time. It started out small and rather inexpensive and ended up quite the opposite. But I recently came to the conclusion that I only have so many fingers...stop! After going from semi-precious to precious stones...to diamond cocktails...to upgrading the wedding rings...the only thing I really wanted was that 3-stone...done. But every now and then I see something that catches my eye LOL.
Thanks again for all the advice...it really feels fantastic just to be able to wear them again!!!!

Monday
Exercise: turbo jam Cardio Party 1
Calorie Intake: 1528
Ugh, Mondays. I never seem to get to bed early enough on Sunday night and always start the new week dragging. Came home...gave the dog some attention, and let my get cold while I grabbed a quick 20 min nap.
A different workout was on the schedule today, but in my tired state I stuck with a trusted ole favorite to be sure I would actually do it.
Now I'm waiting for my hubs to get home so I can use his car. Mine died in my school parking lot...Grrrrrr...he is pretty sure it's the fuel pump but hasn't had time to check it out yet. The worst part is that a fuel pump for my car is just about $600. Just for the pump. Did I mention I hate Mondays? Hey, it's gotta get better!!

Well, it didn't get much better. Still no , and I positively detest having to catch a ride home after work. I guess being stuck here at home this evening will ensure that I at least exercise...can't escape! But I really don't feel like it...it was a real stressful workday and I'd rather zone out in front of the tv with my doggy. Hmmm, I wonder what shows are on tonight...I think House is on later...
I think I'm trying to get out of working out because I know I'm not turbo jamming tonight. I don't enjoy the bike or elliptical very much, but I have to break up the TJ workouts with other activities because of my bum knees. I'll break out my ipod I guess. No one is here...I will be singing along at the top of my lungs ...whatever gets you through, right? Course, I'll have to go find my poor dog afterwards...
Ok, that's it...don't stop me...I'm going to get my workout clothes on...
Oops...let me rephrase that. If I'm able to sing along at the top of my lungs - I'm obviously not working out hard enough. Let's just say I'm known for sudden outbursts LOL

Whew. Done. The first 20 min or so were ok, the next 20 min were a total battle between mind & body. My feet hurt - just stop...my knees are sore - just quit...my bunions are aching...give up! But somehow the last 20 were better. I think boredom has a lot to do with it. I always set the elliptical to either a hills or interval program just to keep things a little more interesting. But it doesn't help alot. I am definitely turbo jamming tomorrow!
Exercise: 60 min elliptical

Gotta see how many calories I have left for today - I'm starving!

Scoob,
Maybe if you sang in a Scooby voice, you dog could appreciate it more.
I'm glad to see you pushed youself. Those are often the most satisfying workouts.
Ooh, my sister-in-law ordered me the weighted gloves for my B-day. I can't wait for them to come! Thanks for test-driving them.

Hey I never thought of that! Rooby Roo! Ruh Roh! Nah, don't think I sound any better in my Scooby voice...
Thanks, yeah yesterday was a real struggle. I don't remember having to dig that deep in a long time. But I felt like a million bucks afterwards.
Yay! You're getting the gloves!! I hope you find them as beneficial as I do. They've increased my heart rate, made my punches much more powerful - probably because they force me to keep my form in check - all this outta little one pound gloves! I can't wait till you get to try them out!!!

watched the first hour of biggest loser...didnt really like it that much cause I dont agree with the way they starve themselves to lose ridiculous amounts of weight each week. I remember my trainer told me if I lost more than one or two pounds per week, it was NOT fat, but muscle, or water. They have to be doing something wrong if this is true.
Anyway, kidnapped is on, I LOVE that show! But not more than Heroes....

OWF - I totally agree with your opinion about The Biggest Loser. But it's still one of my guilty pleasures - I can't help myself! At least on the other show Celebrity Fit Club, they are weighed every 2 weeks and the losses are a tad more reasonable. I was honestly shocked when I read the book and realized the number of hours they exercised and the horrifyingly low caloric intake. Obviously not healthy...and they justify this by saying it's a competition. Ok, sure LOL. So that makes it ok to lose 20+ pounds a week?
Anyway, I guess I love the human element of the show. The back stories, the tears (yes I am a total sap!), etc. I guess I can relate to alot of that from my own personal weight issues. And I love the theme song - Proud - I definitely put that on my ipod LOL!!

I saw a bit of The Biggest Loser last night. I watched a fair amount of the show in its first season. I can't believe the amount of weight the people lose. I spent seven months losing the amount some of the contestants lost in the first two weeks.
Even though it's through obscene amounts of work and dieting, it's still a quick fix and not healthy. I have a hard time watching for that reason. I worry that others will try to follow the program without any education or supervision because they figure "It's only a few months, how badly could I hurt myself?"
In my weight-watchers meeting yesterday, I had a woman who has lost 178 pounds!!! She did it the slow correct way...she's been following the plan for nearly two years. She still has close to 100 pounds to go. I admire her far more than the people on the Biggest Loser. I would guess she's in her 50's. She's my hero! I'm not sure I would have the discipline to follow the plan for that long knowing how far I had to go. Just wanting to lose about 60 pounds seemed insurmountable enough at the beginning.

Yeah, I hate to admit I was addicted to the show for the first two seasons and then bought the book. I thought last season's final 3 losers were awesome...the 2 men were barely recognizable from their formal selfs. I think Matt lost a total of 158 pounds at the finale. But, just like Skipper said - quick fix. What would be more interesting is to see updates on all these people after they go back to the real world of not exercising 6 hours a day and eating 1200 calories.
A co-worker just recently started exercising and watching what she eats. She had her first weigh in and was disappointed with her 5 pound loss. She said hey - I've worked out for SEVEN days now...only 5 pounds?? It was hard not to say anything snotty...like you've been eating like a for 23 years now...and you're wanting to drop say...20 a week??? She really thought...really! I'm not kidding! Perhaps shows like The Biggest Loser do give people the wrong idea.
Wow Skipper! That woman in your WW meeting is really remarkable. I don't think many could have that much discipline when the finish line is incredibly far away. She must set many, many mini goals...it would be so overwhelming otherwise.

Scoobees,
Please tell your co-worker that I don't like her already.
Does she have ANY idea how many years I have been trying to drop the last few pounds permanently??? And I have worked out for hours each day for FAR more than SEVEN days!!!! It makes me ill to hear such things from people.

Puleeze! Do you know how hard it was not to smack her upside the head????

She's 23 and apparently severly uninformed. I do try and give advice and helpful little hints but it's like she doesn't hear me at all. I'm really shocked she lost any weight at all. She's not educated on healthy food choices (Velveeta toasted cheese sandwiches are healthy, dontcha know??) and on fitness in general. My hubs suggested I loan her some of my exercise/fitness/weight loss books and magazines. I think she's lived under a rock, it amazes me how anyone can really be that clueless in this day and age.
This is the same person I gave the Billy's Boot Camp Elite package to since tae bo hurts my back. I gave her the whole thing...eating plan and exercise schedule and all...and she just doesn't read it. Of course this is the same person that thinks 10 minutes on her prized Ab Lounge will make her loose weight and give her a 6 pack.

I try so hard not to get angry. Depressed with a 5 pound loss. I want her to wake up. I told her that's a huge loss for your first week and it will slow dramatically from here on. So if that 5 pounds discourages you that much - ya might as well hang it up now. I told her my personal losses are very slow...I am now thankful when the scale registers that one pound loss each week...and last week was only 1/2 pound. And I work out HARD...and eat healthy.
And she told me she has these heavy weighty things...she didn't know what a dumbbell was called...that she 'does some moves' with them...but they weigh 5 pounds and she's pretty sure they are way too heavy and she will be getting bigger and bulkier. I told her she can borrow my 25s anytime. I think that stumped her.

Ok, I better stop ragging on her now. But man, pick up a pamphlet or something! There's no excuse to be that uninformed.

Thurday
Today was a planned day of rest from exercise; and I still feel guilty. My hubby picked me up from work today and suggested we eat a early dinner at Bob Evans. I could have said no...lol...yeah, right. But if I would have known in advance we were going, I would have limited my calories earlier. So, now I don't have any calories left this evening...not even for a snack LOL. In fact I went a little over. When I got back I checked here for the calorie count of what I ate...a bit more than I would have guessed. Their one piece wildfire grilled chicken breast was 294 calories, got the steamed broccoli with it for negligible calories...BUT I couldn't resist the banana nut bread. I only ate 1/2 of a slice and it's 215 calories! It was small enough to inhale LOL. For eating a grand total of 600 calories... I am still hungry! Great incentive to hit the hay early tonight before my hunger turns to a out!

That says it all right there Skipper!
Hi Dondi! I hope you don't think I'm a meanie or anything LOL. I know she's only 23 but it's hard not to get frustrated with her when she really wants to lose weight but simply won't help herself, won't become better informed, and doesn't even attempt to read the stuff I've given her! I've tried to honestly help. I just have to let it go...just like when she was telling me of all the flavored ice cream/coffee beverages (whatever ya call them!) she and her step mother (who is also trying to lose weight) were drinking last night! I didn't say a word. They give her energy, didn't ya know???
Speaking of that weight loss ticker...I HOPE I will be editing it tomorrow - it's weigh in day again...fingers crossed!!!

Oops...a day behind in posting. Here goes...
Friday
Exercise: turbo jam cardio party 1 with weighted gloves
Calorie Intake: 1531
Today was one of those Fridays that you would think would go well - because it's Friday!! - but work was unusually stressful and I didn't rest well last night for some reason...but anyway it's over and it was pay day LOL!
I'm a little ticked at myself for falling back into my ole rut of doing cardio party 1 on days when I either don't feel like exercising or when I'm simply to tired to push myself with a harder workout. Not that this dvd is easy!! No siree. But I know the choreography so well that it does make it a bit simpler. But, I was in a time rush and I didn't feel like challenging the mind much as well LOL. But I still got a great workout in and I should be happy with that.

Saturday
Weigh-in Day!

I am almost too happy to type. I am down 3.5 pounds this week! I got on the scale a couple more times just to be sure. And there it was...174.5! Down from 211. A total of 36.5 pounds lost! So what if I'm still considered obese - it's been at least 11 years since a scale read this weight!!!!
Hail to the Zig Zag calorie idea!
What else can it be?? I stalled out last week with a .5 pound loss compared to my usual trusty one pound weekly loss. Then I realized I haven't been adjusting calories lately to compensate for my loss in body weight. So this past Saturday I started varying my calories...3 days lower with the 4th day at maintenance level, and repeat. 6 days of exercise....and BAM!
Holy !!! Another thing that might be in play here is with the 3 lower calorie days I don't have any calories left to eat later on at night. I've been going to bed kinda hungry...I wonder if this could be another reason for a greater than usual loss this week. Whatever it is - I am truly thankful!!!
I'm not silly enough to believe this can happen all the time. I'm sure my body is just going through a change and will adjust again shortly but I am so doing my happy dance all day over here!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday
Exercise: turbo jam Booty Sculpt & Abs dvd + Punch, Kick & Jam dvd
Calorie Intake: 1860 (supposed to be zig-zag high day)
Needless to say, I am still on an emotional high after yesterday's weigh-in. Talk about motivation to do my workout today! Plenty! If success continues like this - I am going to love this zig zag calorie scheme.
Today's workout was great. I am loving that Booty Sculpt dvd more each time I do it. For some reason the ab portion hits the spot better for me than the Ab Jam dvd. And Punch Kick & Jam is my favorite of the cardio dvds - and I even finished the whole thing with the weighted gloves...last time I had to take them off after only 20 minutes.
I guess that's it for now - hope everyone's having a fantastic weekend!

Scoobees, I've kicked the dog, too. Don't report me to the SPCA, though.
That's how I learned to always look where I'm kicking. Also, Skip sometimes places toys strategically during my workout so I slip, trip or twist myself inappropriately during TJ.
So far we haven't killed each other.

Wednesday
Exercise: 45 min elliptical
Calorie Intake: 1517
Today was going to be my rest day but I chickened out. I don't want to rest tomorrow because it's my higher calorie day...maybe Friday.
I gave turbo jam a break today and did the elliptical. At least I couldn't kick the today!! I don't even know how he got by my feet yesterday...I was paying more attention to the tv screen than him. The cool down is tricky on that dvd and I was totally trying to nail it for once but instead nailed the dog.
I need to have a mini rant about myself here tonight. I've been pretty consistent with the weight loss and that's keeping me totally jazzed. But I am so sick of being fat. And I so wished I would have been more successful with this when I was much younger. I just feel that my 43 year old body is just getting so battered and abused that it's fighting me back with all these aches & pains.
This starts to happen every time I go on a exercise regime. It's always derailed me in the past and I am trying to just keep working thru whatever happens. First it was the knees. They constantly get sore and swell. But I've worked thru that again. Then it's my bunions; I have one by both big toes. They've gotten so inflammed and painful that it's hard to walk at times...much less wear shoes. So, I worked right thru that one. Now...sheesh...yesterday I got a new development. I couldn't figure why the side of my leg was hurting. I got home from work and changed my clothes - and lo and behold I've got a huge bruised area there. Now, I know I didn't injure it at work...what the heck? I look closer and pretty much figure it's varicose veins. My mom has spiders veins and varicose veins in her legs also. I've had spider veins on my thighs for years; and every now and then I notice an enlarged vein in my lower leg that kinda throbs when I exercise vigorously...but nothing this major. I haven't read much on this subject yet so I'm not really informed. My latest issue of Shape magazine coincidentally has an article about these veins. Apparently there's not a whole lot you can do about varicose veins. It said they aren't life threatening - thank goodness! - but the throbbing probably won't go away unless you have them removed...at a cost of $1500 a vein. So, I keep exercising LOL.
It's not really bothering me right now; doesn't seem to affect walking or anything. It just hurts if I touch it.
Ok...Aches & Pains Rant Session 1 concludes. I hope to not get to Session 2! If anyone has any info or advice to share about this - I'm all ears...or eyes LOL.

Oh Scoobees, I Sooo empathize with you on the varicose veins. I have them almost exclusively on my right thigh with a whole lot of spider veins around them. I've had 'em as long as I can remember. I'm considering the laser ablation surgery. The problem is that they recommend no exercise for like 6 weeks afterwards. I can't live with that!
My grandmother had her legs covered the full length. They were so dark, they almost looked like tattoos. She no longer wears sheer hosiery. I really hope I don't get that many. I'm not forty, yet and I already have a good sized patch.

Don't you just love getting older? And we're not even that old yet....I'm older than both of you (51).
OK, there's always a silver lining....we are doing something about it! 4 years ago I was at almost 250 lbs. I had high cholesterol. I was a prime candidate for diabetes, stroke, heart disease, cancer.....etc.
We are changing our diets....we are losing weight......we are getting healthier!!!! I wish I had never been heavy....the varicose veins, the cellulite, the sagging skin after the weight loss, the things that still jiggle
Well, I can't change the fact that I'm aging, or will soon be fighting off other symptoms of menopause, and I can't change the fact that I was overweight for so many years and never moved, except from the TV to the refrigerator.
BUT, I can continue to try to lose the last 20 pounds. And I can keep active by walking and going to Curves. And I can make healthy choices in what I eat (even when people look at me funny at office parties and potlucks and family dinners).
SO, may God help you to "accept the things you cannot change, courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference" or something like that Hang in there, Scoobees, we're here for you to vent when you need to

Thanks guys for helping me thru my rant . Sometimes I get so down on the things that are wrong, I forget to appreciate the things that are right.
Do the varicose veins always hurt...or do they just become aggravated at times? I think I would go nuts if my leg is always this sensitive - ugh! So much for the shorts I was planning on fitting back into this coming summer! Maybe ones down to my knees!

Exercise: turbo jam Lower Body Jam dvd + Fat Blaster dvd
Calorie Intake: 1953 (zig zag high day)
Got in a great workout tonight. I feel a bit icky with the higher calorie day. I think my body has adjusted pretty quickly to the lower calorie days as I no longer feel hungry so often. But not the high cal days yet...my belly feels too full.

Ladies,
I empathize with you all. My mother had varicose and spider veins and she says its because of waitressing for years. THAT SCARES ME SO MUCH!!!!! I am SO LUCKY and blessed to have beautiful skin now, but I am young. And, now, I am also a waitress. Scary stuff. I don't know if it's hereditary or not. My friend had that surgery to remove them from his legs when he was only 32. They were bulging and hurt him to walk everyday. He is fine now, though, and I don't know how much the surgery ended up costing after insurance pays their little percentage.

I haven't done much reading about varicose veins yet, but the article in Shape suggests that they could be hereditary...and certainly being overweight and having a job where you stand in place for long periods all contribute. That's me. So far they aren't bulging yet...just painful to the touch and bruised appearance. Hopefully I can get the rest of this weight off before they get worse!

Fantastic workout today...I was in a great mood and it helped me push it 110%. I'm excited that my son is coming home from Bowling Green today! Of course he's leaving again Saturday with his Ohio State buddies to go see the football game LOL, but he'll be back Sunday night and stay till Tuesday night due to a break in classes.
It's been a long week - but good week. I didn't take a rest day and I can definitely feel it...hubs & I both feel asleep during the movie (United 93)! Sleeping in tomorrow!!

Ohhh I forgot to mention I went shopping yesterday; I only have 2 pair of jeans that fit - and that I don't look ridiculous in. I was passing by Wal-Mart so I decided to look around. I saw some cute jeans in the Juniors section (I know...I know I am NOT a junior at 43 years old LOL) and they were on sale. Some sort of new Lee's styles. I almost passed out in the dressing room when size 13/14 fit! Ok, granted...my other jeans ar |
