For some reason I cannot seem to access the higher-number pages in my original diary so for now I shall continue my diary in this topic.
I had to split up my diary due to technical problems. The next part is here:

Thanks, CG.
Monday [New Year's Eve]
Got up, ate some plum-based 'ice-cream' and rushed to make the special 'Disco Spin' class, similiar to last Monday when kids were allowed to particpate [last year I was on the 'Exercise To Music' course to become a qualified aerobics instructor. My instructor and examiner was Trudie. Trudie was participating in the class with her husband and small child]. Mood lighting, disco lighting - and of course some disco music. Whilst we were stretching Angela distributed Party Poppers which we all pulled at the same time for a grand finale. [I didn't know they were called 'party poppers' and couldn't think what to type into Google to find out, but luckily they came up in a conversation...]
Got home, ate some vegetables and some smoked turkey. I now eat proteins from the freezer on rotation: using computer records I figure out which type of protein I haven't had for the longest time and this is what I have - should avoid descrimination in favour of what I can easily see.
At 3.30pm mum invited me to go shopping. We went to ASDA where I got a spare mobile phone. The Nokia 1620 is only £10. I already have one of those so now I have a spare charger and a spare battery. I recently extended my contract on this phone for another year so this is an 'insurance policy' against the battery developing a defect in the 2nd year of life. The only other thing worth having at ASDA was ham. Actually quite a bit of it (over 900g), I observe that at my rates of purchase versus consumption, I'm never going to be out of animal proteins!
We proceded to Tesco where I got some bargain produce, remarkably lots of brussel sprouts for £1. We rounded of with Sainsbury's where I found nothing but mum found some things she could use [pizza bases made from white flour and a dip made from sour cream: no thanks]
I made some headway getting some melons, clementines and banans into the freezer. For the first time in days I actually caught up with forums and emails (and radio programs, including another broadcast by Scott Colby) before bedtime. I could have engaged in some projects but decided to instead put the MP3 player on and listen to a cancer report. This is a bit of a blast from the past - a link that I was sent by Becci some months ago.
I didn't specifically welcome the new year, but at one point I looked at the time and it was 0.40am, so at that point I was aware that it was 2008. This is pretty much the opposite of my experience 8 years ago. When 1999 turned into 2000, I was an avid follower [read: addict] of Television media, and the new year was practically a 24-hour televised event [as because of Time Zones new year is happening at different times and different places] and I remember being immersed with the experience [oh, with lots of readiness should the "Year 2000 bug" break everything].
A steady 1800 is a lot easy on the brain than going up and down. I've managed it now for 6 consecutive days. I pity my mum: her unadjusted RMR is 1078, that's 330 less than me, and with her inconsistent exercise schedule that's probably where she should be aiming. Of course she's not making life easy for herself by refusing to count calories, though she did suggest she might start counting out her walnuts/almonds to ensure she's not over-doing things on the most calorie-dense choices. She's managed about 1 kilo (about 2lb) per month over 4 months so I guess she is in the right 'ball-park'

Tuesday [New Year Day]
When I'm entering my food data into the computer at the moment, the data is going into a MySQL 5 database, but the front-end is made with Access 2000 which means it is very optimised for keyboard data entry - for example I can type the first few letters of the food name, then ALT-down-arrow to show auto-complete matches, use arrows to highlight the food I meant and press TAB to confirm. I've been thinking for a while about designing a web-based equivalent: the advantages would be that I could do data entry on any internet-connected computer around the world, not just my home computer; and I could make my 'live' food diary available to anyone I wanted to show it to. I thought that developing a website with PHP is the way to go, however the bit that gets me down is that straight HTML forms are not very easy to use. For example, picking from a combo-box is fine with a mouse but the keyboard interface is rather poor. If I type the first 3 letters of a food ("pea" for peanuts, for example) I end up with food beggining with the letter 'A'). The solution is to learn more about client-side scripting, Javascript, and possibly some libraries or frameworks or pre-built components, such as the Yahoo UI library. So the project for the day was reading up around that sort of thing.
At one point Nash called. I asked him about the headset he got me for a Christmas present, did he buy it from a shop or from the outdoor market, did he retain the receipt? The answer was he got it from Tesco Kingston, which was open today [not all shops are open on New Year's Eve] and he was going to look for the receipt. I didn't have to come but obviously this would be a boring errand for Nash to do on his own so to make this happen I agreed to come. We managed to get him a refund by asserting that he was mislead by a staff memeber at the time of purchase. There were some pineapple cubes at a reasonable price and I snapped some up (I love the smoothies I make with them). We then came back into town and although the market was mostly closed we did find a stall that sold a headset compatible with my phone. In fact Nash saved some money as it was £2 cheaper than the non-working headset he got at Tesco. However he did then waste some money by paying £5 to unlock the spare phone he bought yesterday [same as mine]. My friend Rob thinks you can unlock such phones free of charge by doing a bit of research on the internet, yet Nash's time is obviously more valuable [well I know Nash quite well and I contest that observation!]
I then went home and froze the pineapple - the sooner that is done, the sooner I can enjoy my smoothies. The rest of the day I stayed home, did more on the computer project but also caught up with forums, emails and the radio. Fell asleep at 11pm but got up around 1am (and got to have my last meal at that point).
I use this page snipurl.com/NirAnimalStock to figure out which animal protein to have next to ensure a 'fair rotation'.

Wednesday
In the morning I headed off to my first workout in 48 hours. Instructor Jo was poorly and she asked Martin to cover for her. I've met Martin before but have never seen him instructing. From his face he is at least 45-50 years old (if not older). I couldn't tell how long he has been instructing for: some of his teaching seemed ropey but on the other hand he had some older CDs. Either way it was a positive experience.
Foodwise I was planning to have a "fruit day", a bit like the FL4I concept, except mine would also Whey powder (to go with the fruit), as well my one 50-calorie serving of meat, some vegetables that would otherwise go off, later on I decided to even have starchy vegetables as well. At the end of the day, looking at my fruit consumption, by weight or by percentage calories it is actually less than Tuesday - so the day mutated from the 'fruit day' idea into a regular day. Or maybe anybody else who notices that over 50% of my calories are coming from fruit thinks that all my days are 'fruit days'. Ahem.
I tried to chase up my Video Urodynamics appointment but didn't get anywhere. In the afternoon mum came over to give me a couple of Sharon fruits as a gift and to sell on 3.4kg of courgettes she found at Sainsbury's. In the evening I headed off to Combat. I stopped over at Sainsbury's beforehand but didn't have time for the reductions trolley to come out of hiding - instead I alerted mum of the situation and proceeded to have a great combat class. Afterwards tried calling mum, ended up catching up with dad instead (about how he's getting on at work), ran into mum at Sainsbury's and we agreed to meet up shortly afterwards near my home where she sold me the 8.8 kilos of apples she managed to get whilst I was at combat [just think what the total amount of apples she bought must be if this was just my share].

I'm having a look at what has happened over the last 2.5 weeks. I have not had any 'low carb' days during this school holiday period. With a couple of exceptions I have also not cut calories radically to unadjusted RMR levels, variously keeping it around 2100 (maintenance) or 1800 (which represents a conservative deficit). You'd be expecting me to be either maintaining or losing my weight. Instead, my moving average (the trend line on the graph) is actually rising. Why is that? Well when you eat low-carb you experience water-weight loss as a result of glycogen depletion and the consistent low readings were pulling down that average. One way of looking at it is that they were false readings. I don't naturally do low-carb. It isn't my normal mode, so it goes away and so do the lower readings. The other reason might just be food-in-my-system. If I'm eating 8-9lb of food per day, some of it must always still be in my body, one way or the other. I guess however long I continue eating this way, my trend line is unlikely to top 55.5kg. I guess I'm annoyed that the foods I eat has such a radical effect on my weight.

Yes Zen, what I said can indeed be taken several ways .
To be clear, I am 100% sure that I'm not gaining fat, this is just a game the food is playing with my head.
Thursday
Day started with Body Pump. Jo still ill and this time covered by Michelle (15 years of experience as an instructor, recently turned 40, recently gave up instructing) which was an unexpected treat. I can't believe that I used to have a resentment about Michelle only letting me use a 10 kilo bar for the warm-up.
Mum gave me the phone number of a solicitor and asked me to arrange the first meeting regarding drafting a will for me (she'll be paying for it but I still have to get it done myself).
The day was over before I knew it. I've had a lot of spare time over this holiday period but I have become a master at squandering it - it mostly goes on the forums, radio programs I listen to and the e-mail lists and blogs that I follow (and often eating, food preparation and shopping). The most frustrating thing is that I do this to myself: for example reading the forums once every day or two is quite efficient - reading everything that is new once an hour is a lot less efficient! I want to do better in terms of safeguarding my time.

I know what you're saying Nir!! I have been popping on the forums quite more frequently than usual. Of course, that will change once I have to go back to school next week...
I don't know how much of a hassle getting a will is, but you def want one. My grandparents didn't have one, and my mom and her sibs had a horrible time getting everything figured out after they died. And they had to give a ton to the gov., the way I undertsood it..

Yep, having a will has been on my to-do list for over 2 years to make life easier for the people I leave behind, just in case something ever happens.
Friday
Instructor Jo is ill for the 3rd day in a row and once more we had the pleasure of Michelle teaching step. When I got back I got involved with preparing vegetables (neglected of late). Mum took me to meet the solicitor and I explained what I required in the Will. We were then not far from NETTO so we went shopping - there was a digital food scale on sale at £10 and I suggested mum bought it for herself - our mistake was that we did not check that it worked before leaving the area (it was broken, later on she went back to the shop and they were sold out so she had a refund instead of a replacement - though she is now more open to the idea of buying a scale at some point).
After a nap I headed out to OA. It started raining when I was halfway there and kept raining throughout the meeting and on my way home. There was good turnout for the meeting, including a new-comer. There were moving shares. The person whose 30 day chip was my catalyst for getting serious about my abstinence had passed her 1-year birthday but it wasn't celebrated as she had not notified them in advance. I guess I need to plan how I am going to remain abstinent during my forthcoming hospital stay (I think it is 2 days - I don't even have the basic details!) - my OA birthday is 2 days following the operation. We also had a group counsiousness at short notice. I got thoroughly frozen and wet on the way home but got thawed out effectively once in the flat.
Went to bed having not caught up with the day's forums, blogs and emails but didn't feel any more productive than before!

Saturday
On Wednesday found out through moneysavingexpert.com that there will be a coupon for Goji Berries (normally £5.19) in the Saturday Daily Express (normally 70p). Initially decided this offer wasn't for me but later decided to try to get to the communal paper shared by gym members. On Saturday the gym opens at 8am. I got up at 6.30am and was at the gym by 8.15am. I removed the page from the newspaper and then had a shower (and a rest at the sauna) before classes started at 9am. After the classes bumped into Dave and Marie at the ice-cream place directly outside the gym for a chat. Talked a bit about nutrition (but Dave was eating a muffin whilst Marie was eating an ice-cream cone, I don't think there's much risk of convergence...). I then passed Holland and Barrettes where I exchanged the coupon for a 150g packet of Goji Berries. I tried them at home and was disappointed (in my opinion raisins are nicer!).
2pm to 10pm is a vage and hazy (including a nap from 6pm till 8pm). At 10pm mum showed up with loot from a late-night shopping expedition: many packets of turkey and smoked salmon from ASDA each priced at just 10p. Processing them all into 50-calorie portions for the freezer meant a 4am bedtime!

Funny timing to read about wills. I JUST hung up from talking to my dad and I didn't have the nerve to bring his up. He's impossible to deal with. All I need is current copies as I'm his executor, but it will lead to endless discussion. I should start my own diary to keep you posted!
I wrote my own will, but I don't know if you can do that in the UK.
OA meeting talk brings back years of good memories.
Keep dry!

Sunday
Got up at 10am.
"keep dry" has a new meaning as I am currently experimenting with dividing my calories into 5 or 6 "meals" but with the late start, by the time I was eating (12ish) I had to make it a double-meal (meals 1+2 together). I was basically doing a 'tour' of my fridge, sampling a bit of every vegetable I had (notable exceptions were garlic and raw onion) before moving on to fruit. By 2pm I needed to rest, which I did until around 4pm. I then had meal 3 whilst getting ready to go out to the gym. (1800/5=360, 360x3=1080).
Too funny: somethimes when I'm almost ready to leave the flat I have the front door propped open using the cardboard box that contains all of the materials I intend to recycle in due course [paper and cardboard, plastics, glass and carrier bags]. The postman does ocassionally deliver mail but more often than not they just deliver junk flyers (insurance, pizza etc.). As my door was wide open he simply threw the flyers in and they landed squarely in the recycling box - cutting out the middle-man!
Gym: the body step class was covered by a girl. Although she didn't know how to turn on the lights she was a pro in every other respect. She selected old music from before I (or anyone else in the room) was stepping and thus her ability to teach/cue was not in dispute. It was almost a let-down when Jason took over for body pump as I had assumed she'd be doing that too. Headed home and as tomorrow I'm "back to school" I spent some time preparing and weighing some vegetables. The plan is to go back to 1400 calories but whether I'll go moderate carb (100g) or not remains to be decided.
7 day food shopping totals: 3.62 + 0.78 + 3.22 + 0 + 0 + 2.85 + 0 = £10.47
Best percentages in a while - and had an early night!

I remember a whiile back you were considering reoganizing your eating plan into distinct meals....so you've committed to and already begun making the change? Are you finding it more/less satisfying? helpful? more/less socially comfortable? more or less "food time" intensive? Just curious 'cause I know it's a big departure from what you've done for a long time.

Hi Suenos, thanks for noticing [at a time when my diary finds itself sliding to the 2nd page and the number of hits on my page has dramatically fallen, presumably because of all the new CPH members]. At this point I'll describe it as an experiment that I'm owning up to rather than a commitment I've already made. I'm finding it OK to cope with - cravings to eat are emotional not physical. Skipping or delaying breakfast is easier than starting early and then stopping (I'm typing this at around 9.50am and still haven't eaten anything even though concious since 8.30am) but won't leave it too long. Helpful - probably, I'll withold judgement. Time-saving? a little BUT food preparation still takes just as long (in fact I use food preparation as a device to distract me from eating - all these vegetables won't cook and chop themselves!). Also it still takes time to eat, the meals are not zero-length. I'm very aware that this experiment might end at any time if I don't commit to it.
Monday
Having an early night was a good idea, I still struggled to wake up early enough but I managed it. College was a short day, only 4 hours, but still a culture shock after the long break.
One assignment we're starting (communication pitfalls) involves video - both of a group discussion and some comedy sketches; some of my December efforts require further work (for example a presentation about marketing at Nestle is dry and boring: needs more pictures, less words and less slides). Another spreadsheet assignment has been dealt out. Had a boring 'citizenship' lesson but did pick up some facts - England only had kings since ~800 AD and London's population has shrunk from 8m down to 5m.
Had a 3-way conversation with a teacher and fellow students who have both had surgery. I need to get used to idea that it will be 1.5-2 months to recover, not just a couple of weeks. I also need to find out how long my hospital stay will be. I'm having random thoughts regards coping with hospital food such as bringing tinned beans and vegetables and TVP as I don't think the hospital will cater to my needs. The only exception would be if doctors place me on a 'low residue' diet (that means very low in fibre) or if I am so weak that I actually need to consume calorie-dense junk food to keep my strength up. Not knowing is frustrating. I get the chance to ask someone some questions at my pre-op this Friday. I chased up my Video Urodynamics today - now I'll give the woman some room and only chase it up again tomorrow.
At home prepared lots of vegetables for tomorrow's breakfast and long day at college, also peeled 6 tupperware boxes' worth of clementines to top-up the freezer.
At 6pm I could see a large amount of produce was being reduced in the cold stores but I had a Combat class. I tried leaving mum a message but I don't think she got it in time. Must be the effect of New Year's Resolutions: there were 32 participants, the largest number seen since this particular time-slot was launched mid-September. Shey couldn't get the microphone to work and she had practically lost her voice so she managed to teach by mimeing. It was a good workout. I patiently waited for everyone to get a mat first - mats actually ran out so I used a yoga mat instead (for press-ups and crunches). By 7.20pm the discounted vegetable area at Sainsbury's was a ghost town which is doubley-frustrating as it proves that the reductions were significant! Pour me, I am running so low on produce that I was able to put the (supermarket) potato box back in the fridge. The only produce currently at room temperature is allotment-jerusalem-artichokes and allotment-potatos. Ok, how many of you are simultaneously complaining about the price of produce and yet have so much that it won't fit in your fridge?
The eating plan was supposed to be 1400 calories divided into 6 meals of 233 calories at these times: 6.30am, 10:06am, 1:42pm, 17:18pm, 8.54pm, 0:30am. I don't think I hit any of the meal times (one was before I woke up, one was during a college lesson, one was too close to the time I'm heading out to the gym etc.) but these phantom meal-times still proved to be a handy guide. If I'm succesful with my 'mealtime challenge' I may eventually reduce the number of meals, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Nutritionally the day starts with vegetables and as I feel less scared that I'll remain hungry and more concerned that I'm eating too much I transition to more calorie-dense foods: today this meant flirting with nuts and seeds and then deciding I wasn't low-carbing and opting to fit in some fruit, ending up with macronutrient ratios very similiar to "BFFM baseline".

Hear, hear! If I want to go on the straight and narrow to guide me when I stray I just need to read your diary. Pity I didn't get into the forum over the last three or so weeks because I would have not picked up weight then.
I wish you all the best for your coming operation and believe it will go brilliantly because you are so healthy.

Thanks TrimB and Theresa for the support!
Tuesday
College started at 10.45am so you'd think an easier start than Monday (9am) but I was running late so had to have finish my breakfast at college - tasks always expand to fill available time! At college I was interested in the material of the website-production lesson (after all it overlaps with my projects) but the format was all wrong for the 21st centure - teaching from the front is to be discouraged. I thought I brought enough food for lunch but ran out half-way through my one-hour break. Peggy pointed out that her baked potato with salad was only £1 (not cheap, but perhaps a reasonable nutrition and price compared to most other options) - I ended up having 9 of Peggy's skittles and one of Will's jelly beans.
We then had our computer systems double session where I largely failed to achieve anything (homework is to compare the suitability of 3 off-the-shelf computer systems for the needs of a family with two kids Ben and Jerry - the unit's teacher is a compulsive overeater, I guess you can tell!)
Let Nash waste my time during the short break I have between coming home and shooting off to the gym. I made my pump class which was very busy (with lots of 'gym' stars). Afterwards at sainsbury's picked up a couple of salads. For post-workout meal opted for vegetables (rather than nuts, seeds or fruit) and ended up with a heavy (3712g) food day. Had too much online stuff to do - in bed after 1.30am and paying the price on Wednesday.

Wednesday
Got up late and had to be at college by 9am which meant I could measure my breakfast at home but had to eat much of it at college. The first couple of sessions were concerned with the assignment I was working on in December and I left those with homework, namely to re-do my Nestle presentation, which I actually have to present next Wednesday. We also saw a management training video featuring 'sketches' and presented by John Cleese (from Monty Python) apparently the entire management training product costs £1200!
I was annoyed with mum for calling me whilst I was at college but she had a good reason - a letter arrived saying my operation is postponed for 2 weeks, it will now be on the 25th of February. This affects me in a number of ways: first of all, I'll be in college until the end of this half-term with no break in study. Secondly, I am extending my gym membership to I can also work in February (well, the first 24 days) - I paid an extra £44 at reception at around 8pm to make that happen. My OA birthday (1 year of abstinence) is on February 13th and now that the operation is postponed I should be able to celebrate it on my Friday 15th meeting (which is still 1.5 months away).
After lunch we were working in a rather different room (near the cafeteria) because our normal workstations don't have Corel DRAW on them. We spent 3 hours following a tutorial which gave a practical tour of quite a few features. A 15 minute break to collect myself and then the first counselling session of 2008 which I used to vent a stream of random thoughts. Peggy provided one cube of a small Galaxy chocolate bar (with nuts?) and 3 peanut M&Ms. I got one Cadbury's Roses chocolate at counselling, and I was restless so I had quite a few chewing gum pieaces - so rubbish calories accumulated just like that.
a fun Combat class. At 10pm mum showed up (on way to pick up sister who is visiting from Oxford) to sell on many heads of iceberg lettuce (welcome at the moment as I'm beginning to be low on veggies) as well as pineapples and brussel sprouts [but she also gave me gifts: 950g brussel-sprouts and 900g pineapple].
Despite going to bed at 1.30am I never finished catching up with my emails, and left the forums completely untouched - going by the 'recent topics' page, I have more than 2 pages to catch up with!

Thursday
Woke up late, had a pineapple smoothie (one of my favourite fruits for a smoothie!) and headed out to do a pump class. The winds were so strong I almost fell off my bike (and had to push it for part of the way as cycling was impractica!). They were halfway through the warm-up when I arrived and in the break Marie helped me to set up. I had a couple of hours to myself at home then headed out to college for a spreadsheet session (apparently we're finishing that unit in a month, even though it was originally scheduled for the entire year) and programming (introduction to batch file programming - for example the 'for' command in BAT files - the teacher-provided script had a bug. he was aware of the bug but blamed it on network setup, actually he was missing some "double quotes". Naturally he thought highly of me once I spotted and corrected his bug...)
Back at home I did my best to try to catch up with CPH but when I fell asleep at 2am I still wasn't finished. Evening food pattern wasn't meals but food was not my main focus. 1800 is a 'high' day when you've had three 1400 days in a row. Tomorrow back to 1400 (and a hospital visit)

Friday
Up late (9.30am) and late again for class (this time step). I was also feeling a bit weak - too few calories or perhaps my anemia is playing up.
Afterwards I meant to go to post office but forgot to bring the letter with me. Spent noon till 1pm at home. Mum drove me to the train station and I hoped on a train to London.
Had hospital things from 2.30pm till 6pm. First stop Xray deparment to chase-up a future appointment, finally meeting with some success. Next stop Ward 7 (where I am likely to end up) chat for an hour with a nurse specialist explaining more about my operation - lots of new details for example I will be in hospital for about 10 days (longer than I expected) when I wake up there will be numerous tubes attached to me (neck, nasal, suprapubic, urethra, tummy, 2 x kidney) as the days go by some will be removed. No going back to work or school for at least 2-3 months. After this I walked to my next appointment which was practically in another hospital almost a mile away, involved filling in a multi-page form and a one-hour pre-op assesment (including some physical tests).
The main issues are: what am I going to do for boredom during 10 days of hospitalisation with limited mobility: I need to find out whether I can get myself any kind of bedside internet access for the duration. If I can't I'll be reduced to books, newspapers and perhaps television (god save me).
Secondly, food concerns: would I be able to count calories? What about the health of the food I'll be supplied with (hospital food is probably quite unhealthy by my standards). Will I even be allowed and able to consume healthy foods? Here is a snippet from a booklet describing my operation:
"Once your bowel is working again you will be able to drink properly; you will then be commenced on a light diet e.g. soup, toast, etc. This can be gradualy built up to a normal diet, although you may find that it takes sometime for you to regain your appetite [...] you may find it will take some time for your bowels to return to their usual pattern"
Back to MK by 7.10pm but mum wanted to go shopping so it was an hour before I got back home.
The hospital visit meant that I missed my OA meeting (and it is a shame because I was looking forward to celebrating someone's first birthday). I was able to post Thursday's diary by 10.20pm but then fell asleep by 11pm, very much behind on 101 tasks on my to-do list!

Satuday
Day started with some great workouts (at pump I lusted over a visiting participant who it turns out is actually a qualified pump instructor). I then spent some time visiting 'high street' shops: researching cost of broadband for my laptop from mobile telephone networks. In theory it should be possible to use my existing 'Three' phone as a modem and pay £15 for up to 3GB of access. Lots of 'ifs' and 'buts' - for example will there be adequate mobile network reception in the hospital ward? will I be allowed to use a mobile phone in the ward? Will there be enough power-points for me to use? (Patientline apparently provides internet-on-television service based on Internet Explorer 3, which means hardly any websites work on it so never mind the high cost, it is an unusuable option). Grabbed some sharon fruit at the market. I did briefly visit the 12-3pm 'event' at xscape to participate in a mini-combat workout but I didn't have time to hang around. Went home and found myself napping in the afternoon.
Some months ago I did get my wireless card to work, but now that I've wiped the computer clean I spent a few hours failing to make it work and eventually gave up - so wireless won't be a back-up option for me.
Discounting starchy vegetables (potatos and jerusalem artichokes), my fresh vegetable selection is limited to iceberg lettuce, onions and leeks. I have limited stock of frozen vegetables (cauliflower, brussel sprouts, peas and a vegetable-mix) to pad things out, but I'm feeling the pinch.
Also, I was having one of those days where 1400 calories seemed like a good idea in the morning (when I was rushing out of the door with not much time for food) and at lunch (when I was still out and about) but once I was home for the rest of the day I was having my 'internal war', asking: why do I need a calorie deficit? why am I not eating at maintenance level? [after all, the idea I expressed not long ago was that I would only tolerate going down to 1400 on college days, when I'm quite busy (college and then the gym). I think there is a link between availability of vegetables and me rebelling against low calorie numbers.
I'm getting really quite poor at managing my tasks and priorities, arghh.

oh NIr! what are you going to do? man, you will really have to try to make the best out of the situation. and we are going to miss you so much. you diary is like a daily fix for me! 10 whole days in the hospital, with no internet access and very limited mobility, then throw on everything else- hospital food, just getting done with an intricate operation... you are in my thoughts.
well, maybe you can just write stuff by hand? make sure to pick up lots of good book and magazines to keep you occupied.

Hi!
I'm fighting this challenge on all fronts. Food: I'll be bringing some tins that I'll use to augment hospital food. I'll bring some books (probably will visit library to stock up nearer the time); I'm spending time transferring files and applications from the desktop (which is staying here) to the laptop (for example last night moved my home-made calorie-counting software back onto it) and crossing my fingers that I'll get functional access to the internet on it. Even though my operation is still 6 weeks away I'm tring to get ready now!

| I think I will 'compromise'. Here is the plan: 6 weeks till my operation, 5 of those weeks are in college (and then half-term week just before my operation). Each college week is attending Monday-Thursday with a long weekend Friday-Sunday. I'll have a 3-day low-calorie cycle on each of the following 5 college weeks, so there will be 15 more low-calorie days over this period (of roughly 42 days) till February 25th. Other days will be 1800.

| Doh! I don't think posted about CR - or if I did, it was just a passing thought about it. CR gets the briefest of positive mentions in the Eat To Live book and by analogy I was connected with it by a member of the Eat2Live mailing list also on the CR mailing list. Most CR people are less fanatical about eating healthy foods (less so than E2L people) but they are motivated to eat fewer calories [that would be around the 1400 mark for me] specifically in order to extend their life

The CR people are honest enough to admit that it is a "big experiment"; this is part of the big 'is a slow metabolism a good thing' debate [everyone go and re-read the 2nd section of http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_metabolism.php] which is something I have to wrestle with as I come to grips with the idea that eating only 3 meals a day [not that I've managed doing this yet] might actually be healthier both mentally and physically.|
As a person in love with food scales this is another community I have something in common with; Using software to monitor macronutrients is practically mandated (and some use software to ensure they're getting all their micronutrients too). In a way CR is a snapshot on a journey for someone who eventally gets to eat the ETL way.
By the way I've never read so many abstracts and papers on a daily basis since joining the CR mailing lists, they're certainly not shying from the nerdy science-monitoring aspect!

I hope you get internet access for those 10 days in hospital, it will definately help you with the boredom. Although it sounds like quite an operation I believe that you will recover brilliantly because of being so healthy and fit. We will all be rooting for you.

I do hope my peak physical condition will count for something, even if it only relates to the rate with which I'll regain my muscle strength once I resume workouts in the distant future.
Sunday
A late 9.45am start; Nash caught me for a chat whilst I was assembling a large 'salad' (included some cooked vegetables) and cleared out all of my recycling (save for one glass jar - they go elsewhere). Getting rid of those recyclables is cathartic for me. I then set off to Sainsbury's where I got 1kg of TVP, normally £2.60, for 6p: I have a NECTAR reward card which gives back 1% on purchases at Sainsbury's (so long as the purchase is over £1, which mine often are not, so actually it works out less than 1% for me). Anyhow I must have spent a lot more than £250 since the last time I had a voucher - last time I was going for toilet rolls and flat ice-cream wafers and had too much TVP. Now I don't think the wafers are worth eating (calorie-wise, even though they're only 6 calories each, but they're tiny and made from refined flour), I've also stopped eating the toilet paper (ha ha) but on the other hand I'm using plenty of TVP and this re-stocking effort is happening just in time!
So how did the other 4p come off? I had a coupon for a free Snack-A-Jack. This is a brand of allegedgly healthier snacks [analagous to the 100-calorie-packs you have in the US, I guess], made (I think) variously from oats, rice or (as in my choice of Chocolate-flavour-toffee-coated-popcorn), whole-grain popcorn, whose nutrition has been overturned by lashings of glucose and butter. Item cost 46p but voucher scanned at -50p at the till, giving me a 4p discount. So 260-250-4 = 6. Okay, enough of my morning wasted!
Had that high-calorie (1800) day I was demanding yesterday. Given the current vegetable shortage I've had to be creative. This translated into opening some tins of Ratatouille (a vegetable dish made primarily from tomatos and courgettes: 24 calories per 100g). I also made 'ice-cream' from tinned chopped tomatos. I did a 'clementine sweep' (identifying the fruit most in need of attention) and put another 7 tupperware boxes in the freezer. Reviewing the total weight of food for the day (4339g) that was a local peak, the highest total since January 1st.
I have a large cardboard box containing stuff I intend to take with me to hospital. I had good workouts. I was back home before 8pm. I was up till 1am. I caught up with CPH but otherwise those last 5 hours of the day are a blur. I did not get to do any of my homework (which is due on Wednesday morning).

I was on bed rest for a couple of weeks last year, and it helped me to create a little structure for the day. For example - sudoku puzzles in the morning, read in the afternoon, watch a movie in the evening, and some other random things in between. It helped the days not seem to stretch out in front of me.

May well have to do that if anything goes wrong with my getting-the-internet plans. Otherwise it'll just be business as usual.
Monday
At college the first session involved being videod having a meeting about coming up with comedy sketches. To make the video go smoothly we first had an actual meeting during which we both figured out the sketch ideas and rehearsed how we would present them in our video-recorded meeting, which therefore was not much different from a sketch. Somewhat surreal. We were then given an hour's break whilst other groups would be video-recorded. Our group reconveened in the refrectory. Shock, horror: only the 2nd term of this course and I finally spent some money at the refectory (25p on a juicy pear - I haven't had a pear in a while!). I then wanted to use college computers but the internet wasn't working on them all day. I then discovered a couple of my classmates playing chess - this caught me by surprise as one of them is a disruptive character who will soon likely be booted off the course. Just unexpected. Due to internet unavailability I couldn't do anything useful in the following 2 1-hour sessions and was itching to go home. Throughout the college day I updated various teachers and students about my changed understanding about the length of stay and length of recovery relating to my February operation. One person suggested I would not be allowed to use a laptop at the ward due to electrical interference, I do hope they are wrong!
After college I was feeling a bit reckless and fancied using the token I had for a free meal at a chinese restaurant, as I have done in late October (the terms of the deal mean that Monday after college or Thursday before college are the only times where it is practical for me to have that meal during term time). I cycled directly from college to the restaurant, planning details of my forthcoming food experience. This is where "if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans" comes up. A notice indicated "The restaurant has closed due to retirement." No elaborate food experience today - and a possible message from a higher power. The thing to do was to cycle homeward. The comedy of the situation was that this trip to the restaruant elongated my journey home and the weather was rain and wind, poorest weather in recent times. At home via the internet I discovered that there is another (still-open) restaurant also participating in the promotion - however it is not buffet-style. I therefore do not think I'll be claiming the meal - perhaps I'll pass the token on to my father.
Mum has now purchased some digital kitchen scales and is using them to weigh the amount of nuts and seeds she allows herself. This is a bit of me positively rubbing off on her. (She still refuses to weigh anything else.) Her scale can weigh a load of up to 5kg at a time but the shocker (for me) is that it reports to the nearest 0.1g. 4 years ago when I was buying scales, all kitchen scales were 10 times less accurate (nearest 1g) and I had to purchase a specialist product over eBay, but this seems to no longer be the case.
I enjoyed my Combat class and afterwards got a salad and some broccoli and cauliflower at Sainsbury's (and ate a sample of cheese). Mum, however, knowing of my vegetable plight [I've asked her to buy me more 'emergency' frozen cauliflower to tide me through this difficult time vegetable-wise] decided to go hunting and did quite well. Apart from buying me the dry-roasted peanuts I also asked for, and a large amount of turkey-ham (it was less than 6p per 100g), she managed to net around 8kg of vegetables and fruit for £2.72 and this included a good variety (as well as good quantity), so you won't be hearing complaints from me for a few more days.
Finally spoke to Tracy, who I've managed to miss a few times for technical reasons [I had Yahoo Messanger installed on a computer with no external speakers so once I connected my HIFI to the other computer, anybody trying to initiate a chat would not result in an audiable bleep and I wouldn't be aware unless I looked at the screen of the muted computer: but now YM is on my main computer instead and sanity is restored]. She is not doing well with her compulsive eating at all. I spoke with her until I dropped into bed at 2am.
Wow, 50% of my calories are from non-starchy vegetables. I think that's the highest percentage I ever recorded (Dr Fuhrman's pyramid asks for 30-70% of calories from vegetables (possibly including starchy ones - I'm not entirely sure)) and I often struggle to even hit 30%. A high proportion of my fruit consumption today (both the pear and the fruit salad) were not frozen, which is unusual.

Tuesday
First college session starts at 10.45am but with a 2am bedtime there was hardly scope for an early wake up call so I didn't achieve much before it was time to head out. The weather was atrocious (wet and windy) as I headed out to college for my first session which, like last week, took the format of a very long lecture, with a quick flurry of power-point slides – this time the topic was website security, types of attack and sensible precautions. Once more, the delivery style is not favoured by the students and a few hours later I witnessed as a braver class member decided to raise this with our tutor. (I backed her up.)
On Tuesday we have a one-hour break and yesterday I was considering an order of baked potato but today I was armed with lots of my own foods for lunch. I did not buy it but the fruit bowl (all fruit are 25p) had the most enormous mutant pear, almost twice the size of the one I bought yesterday. At the beginning of the Computer Systems double session I was asked to help the teacher with some practical stuff but declined pointing out that I had 4 pieces of written work outstanding. I did catch up with 2.5 of them but otherwise spent a considerable amount of time chatting [trying to turn one of the students to the Eat-2-Live way of life by giving them access to the ‘Eat Right America’ free PDF.] [ nirmk.byethost13.com/ERA%20eBook.pdf]. At the break I accepted a ginger-snap cookie from the teacher. Some people are giving presentations directly to the teacher instead of to the group. By contrast I was the 2nd person to give the presentation (and voluntarily). I would still describe myself as very shy, but I guess within certain parameters, and there are degrees.
Got home around 5.15pm and found some food gifts from mum: 3kg apples, 1.1kg butternut squash, 900g brussel-sprouts, 150g sugar-snap peas.
I then finally made the commitment to do the homework that has been towering over me since Monday morning (8 days ago) i.e. to substantially revise the power-point presentation I have to give on Wednesday morning. I have been a master of homework-avoidance in the intervening period (it isn’t as if I had any other homework to do). I finally decided I meant business. Around 6.30pm I knew I was skipping pump to stay in and keep up the ‘continuity’. Mind you during the actual pump class I was asleep for a badly needed nap. Mum arrived at 9pm with shopping loot from Tesco: vegetables, fruit and animal protein [10kg of stuff for £2.06]. I spent half an hour doing ‘first aid’ unpacking (including putting the animal protein in the fridge) and resumed home-work. Finally I was done at 11.30pm. The next 3 hours (yes, I also can’t believe it takes that long) were spent packing the proteins into 50-calorie bags and unpacking and storing the various veggies too. As I type this, it is almost 5am in the morning and I still have not retired! So tomorrow will be fun.
I had to be creative to figure out the calories for a fruit my mum bought, which I’ve never seen before. It turns out to be a Dragon Fruit

Even though the prawns [shrimp to you based in the USA] are now in the freezer, I'm nervous as it says they're not suitable for freezing [read: they've been frozen before] so expect to see prawns featured over the next few days until they're all gone.

| I have seen dragonfruit here in Uganda, but am not sure if it is imported or locally grown. I have not tried it yet. How does it taste?

| Citrus fruit: small easy-to-peel orange, like satsuma or mandarin. I would find it dificult to tell the small oranges apart from each other.

Wednesday
Got out at 8.38pm and made college but my teacher was off sick so the presentation I was slaving to finish never happened! so I finally got a spare moment to review my draft Will. Peggy brought 6 flapjacks as snacks (137 calories each) and for lunch had the deep-fry special: a spring roll and chips (fries). We had another Corel Draw session but this was less structured than last week's and my interest was drifting. I got progressively more tired throughout the day. At counselling I was asked if I liked the format we've arrived at (mostly me talking) I think the answer is yes, I wonder what the alternative feels like. I guess this is what I imagined counselling should be like and therefore how I drive the sessions to be. Home by 5.15pm and in bed for a nap by 6pm (therefore missing Combat - so I've missed the gym for two consecutive days. I am an idiot for not going to bed last night at 2.30am. Does that qualify me to follow the FL4I diet?). Got up at some point between 7 and 8pm due to combination of factors: needing the loo and multiple phone calls. At 9pm mum showed up with even more shopping (the 3rd day in a row) it'll be interesting to see how long it takes me to process this today!
As I finished cataloging, processing, selectively freezing/cooking and putting away about 15kg of produce (at a cost of just £1.96 I'm sure at least £40 if I paid full prices) it was 2 minutes to midnight so one more it took me around 3 hours.
I've been feeling sorry for myself both this afternoon at college and later in the evening as I have a cold. Actually I also feel resentful as I'm expecting the way I eat to keep such diseases at bay - doesn't this cold realise I Eat To Live? So although my poor planning meant missing the gym for two of the most popular workouts of the week, I guess you're supposed to cut down on workouts when you are sick so it isn't too bad. Are you familiar with the concept of "man-flu" - men being unable to cope with the rather mild symptoms of a cold, acting out as if they have full-blown influenza: well unfortunately that is me and it makes me wonder just how sorry for myself I will feel when I am in so much pain that they will wire to a machine with a Morphin button. I am a wimp!
Do I learn from my mistakes? Midnight, having finished putting things away, would have logically been the time to go to bed and catch up on sleep but I stayed up till 2.30am instead! Partly it was because I still had 37% of my calories to consume at midnight. Tomorrow is high (1800) calories and the weekend is my choice, 1800 calories for several days if I want to. I incorporated 4 portions of prawns (shrimp) because the packaging said you shouldn't freeze it - now it is all gone. Animal products made up 18.5% of my calories. In SAD (the standard american diet) 42% of calories come from animal products.

Ha! So man-flu does exist!!!? I knew it! My boyfriend becomes the biggest baby when he has a cold, I generally just struggle on but at the slightest sign of a sniffle he is wrapping blankets round himself and settling in front of the TV being miserable. The phrase "but I'm sick" and "I can't help being SICK" is commonly heard and basically he drives me mad and it rarely develops into even a moderately bad cold anyway.
Anyway, I hope you recover from your man-flu soon Nir!!

I have 20,354 other problems in life, but not man-flu (which I never heard of before).
When I got back from my Christmastime trip, I returned with a really bad cold. Usually when I have a cold if I can take enough Contact my nose doesn't run and I can continue with life. Go to the gym and everything.
This one was bad, and I spent three days sitting here, drugged, and it resulted in reorganizing the forums and creating the Diet Buddies forums. Blame it on Contact!
HOWEVER, I don't think I could ever go through any cancer therapy which causes nausea. I really hate that. Fortunately, it's very rare for me. And it's usually from liquor, and since I figure I caused it, I NEVER complain to anyone.
BTW, I think cold and the flu are VERY different. While you are fighting a cold virus, I thinks it's just fine to continue exercising and all if you can do it without spreading your cold or your nose running onto the treadmill.
But I think the flu requires bed rest. I'm really lucky... I had it ONCE over 40 years ago.
Peter
P.S.
Almost forgot. My sympathies for both of your ailments: cold and man-flu
P.P.S.
I just noticed that I write a lot of PSs, which is odd since I can just edit the text above.
Anyway, yesterday I noticed that my first two posts in your diary have PSs, and the PS in my second post is pretty funny!

I like the contrast between what my diary was like when I started journalling here 2 years ago and the state today. I don't know if I'm short-changing myself but I prefer to battle on without any medications if I can at all. I'll take something if I get a temperature though. I'm still sneezing but otherwise alive.
Thursday
Lots of recent bargains meant lots of plastic containers - my box was overflowing so I took them out on the way to Pump, which was first weigh-training since Sunday evening - a good turnout and a good workout. On the way home, today being the last day of the Holland and Barrett sale, decided to buy another tub of Whey Powder before the price doubles. Spent the next hour at home, mostly eating before heading out to college for an afternoon session.
The most notable college 'event' was being unable to log onto docs.google.com, a place I use to store personal files so I can access them wherever I am. Unfortunately I must have got up the nose of the graphics teacher yesterday to the point that she has asked the college administrators to block this website [I verified that this now applies to all students and even staff members!]. In my opinion this is petty behaviour. Further, it is ineffective as I can still transport documents around via the low-tech method employed by everyone else (on a USB memory stick).
Jon treated us to chunks of Tobleron chocolate, especially keen to give it away towards the end of the day as he did not want his mum to discover that he uses the money she gives him to buy snacks. Apparently he has been overweight before (and is currently heading back that way). Peggy gave a healthy impression by eating some chopped apples but dispelled any illusion of reform by getting out a large back of chewy Haribo sweets.
Had a substantial nap around 9pm and stayed up catching up with online things. 3am bedtime. I need to do an apple sweep and I need to reorganise my freezer, hopefully tomorrow (Friday).

Friday
Step class provided the necessary excuse to have me up and about and starting my day. Came home, sorted through my apples and had a 'freezer review'. Had a nap around 4pm.
Made the OA meeting (rather windy weather) where I learnt that the girl I like is now seeing somebody (well there are multiple dimensions to my association with OA; OA is so valuable to me that I doubt I would have risked it by having a relationship with another member anyhow...). There is an OA integroup meeting in North London on Saturday the 16th and I might volunteer to go - it is an idea.
Er, I'll further qualify by saying that I like a bunch of people in different situations. So equally there will be someone who is my favourite gym participant etc.
Why have I eaten not one, but four servings of meat/fish? It is a difficult choice to justify. I ought to go back to eating just 1 or 2 servings. It does feel as though I'll never finish eating all my animal proteins if I don't eat more of them. I find it easy enough to not buy animal protein at regular prices (it is quite expensive) but when I find it for 10p-per-100g or less, the bargain-hunting part of my personality takes over.
Despite my backlash against a 1400-calorie diet last weekend I tried for a low calorie day today and it went fine, with no resentments. 2.30am bedtime (need to be up by 7.30am to make workout)

Saturday
Had a pre-workout shower at 8.40am and slightly late for the 9am workout, resulting in 15 extra triceps push-ups (all in good fun) - Saturday workouts are the best. My understanding is we have an 'open weekend' coming up so perhaps I can smuggle Nash to the gym again. At Sainsbury's got 5.9kg (13lb) of brussel sprouts for £1.50.
As always, I'm vegeterian/vegan unless it is something I really like, or occurs at the right price. Today, cooked turkey breast for around 5p per 100g, and milk for 2p per pint!
With no afternoon/evening commitments I found myself napping as much as my body required, catching up with emails and forums when awake. Managed to go almost 6 hours (deliberately) between breakfast and lunch, though further eating has been less spaced-out. At 10.30pm found myself all-caught-up and still awake (a most rare situation!). Got busy again soon afterwards and went to bed around 2am.

Sunday
Spent most of the day doing my JavaScript project. This involved installing Microsoft Script Debugger (a 10-year-old tool) and learning about JSON and YUI. I spent ages trying to do something which is probably impossible to do (by design - arghhh). Started the day with fruit and spent most of the day having eating too many calories.
Sceptical when headed out but had a great workout. Came back home and got serious about preparing veggies for tomorrow.
My animal protein policy is to prioritise milk consumption (as it is taking up too much room in my freezer). There will therefore be a shameful number of calories coming from animal products without me adding any more. I'm about one point down - 13 to go. Ok, I managed to stay under 10% today.
Have a look at tinyurl.com/34sffz - an interesting paper about NEGATIVE affects of drinking too much water on the kidneys.
7 day food shopping totals: 4.59 + 2.06 + 1.96 + 11.99 + 0 + 1.90 + 0 = £22.50
Started engineering my last meal around 10.30pm and in bed before 11.30pm - an appropriate bedtime, just the once.

Monday
First college session involved writing up my sketch idea about someone who is not speaking loud enough to be heard - this will be video-recorded next week. 2nd session involved brief review of legistlation affecting students (such as data protection and equal opportunities). Julie was absent so David substituted at the spreadsheet lesson, which was cut short and we left half an hour earlier than usual. I was online for a while before tiredness set in and I woke up so late (5.40pm) that I was a tad late for Combat. On the way home I picked up spring greens for 10p. Mum called from TESCO where she was having more luck and at 9pm I got my delivery (about 10 kilos for £2.84). I also got some TVP that my sister bought on sale at Wolverhampton (this arrived at the weekend), finally also 560g of cabbage was a gift from mum.
During the day I was trading links with mum. She sent me one about the dangers of microwave cooking relfe.com/microwave.html which was written by a practicer of kinesiology, so I sent a link about kinesiology quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Tests/ak.html . The CR list directed me to this site scientificpsychic.com/fitness/index.html which has lots of good stuff!
