Hi jonibug, I take it you have not come across this topic (My Story by Peter, Founder of caloriesperhour.com). Peter has been running the website (since around 2000?) I first became aware of the calculators and newsletters in early 2005 and finally dipped my toe in the forums at the beginning of 2006 (wow, two years ago). I was a 'regular user' like everyone else, to begin with ('New Member', and then 'Member' and then 'Senior Member').
abnormalapathy, I'm having a cystoplasty - a bladder enlargement and re-attachment of the ureters. A piece of my own small intestine will be used in the procedure.

Thanks.
Tuesday
I started the day with a cherry-tomato-and-mango smoothie and had a third of my daily calories before heading out to college. At our first session we were given our website security assignment (a report). At lunch I had lots of food but was aware that I did not want to eat it all as I wanted to spread my calories. Computer Systems was relatively uneventful. Got home by 5pm - online for a bit and recovered with a brief nap before heading out to Pump where Angela brought along a friend she shares her marathon-running hobby with, a body pump instructor from a different part of the country and they team-taught (Jan taking the Biceps, Lunges and Shoulders tracks).
After the gym had some brussel sprouts and broccoli around 9.10pm and then decided to have a 'light evening' i.e. only nuts, seeds and TVP beyond that (ended up with 2860g, that's over 6lb of food - didn't pay any attention to carb but the modification meant it ended up at 40%).
Mysql worked last night at my free host company but completely down tonight (making me glad I'm not relying on it for something critical to me, such as my 'live' calorie-counting software). Does that mean that paid-for hosting is the only realistic way forward in case I want to transfer my calorie-counting applicaiton online? (update: now working again)

Wednesday
At college I 'aced' my presentation in the first session, caught up with online things in the second one, and in the 3rd and 4th got to try out a 'graphics tablet' and Macromedia Fireworks whilst trying to do my own things too. Enjoyed my counselling session - talked about how volunerabilities make us more attractive in certain situations.
After a brief rest at home headed out to a fun Combat class (Angela finally go around to learning the new release). At 9pm mum returned from TESCO with some truly exceptional bargains (5kg of produce for 28p works out as less than 6p per kilo!).
I have been reading that 40% CR isn't necessarily optimal for someone starting CR 'later' in life (let's say I started restricting calories in 2004, aged 31), perhaps 10% CR is more optimal in such a situation. I guess that's a relief because it means that, when I'm not attempting a 'cut' I could and actually should raise calories. By the way, the CR percentage is expressed compared not to my maintenance calories but to those of my 'BMI 22.0 control twin'. So CR 10% is actually a 6% deficit (since my BMI and thus BMR/RMR are lower.
Again was thinking about a 'lightweight' day so I guess it is surprising that I ended up with 3467g (on a 1400-calorie day!). TVP is providing me with 40% of my protein. There are lots of low-calorie vegetables prepared for me to eat tomorrow so I guess tomorrow will not be lightweight by any absolute terms either as I do not like waste!

Whenever I read your diary I just WANT to eat lots and lots of veggies and fruit. I would like to bug you for a little advice NIr, I read somewhere that you need to eat within 45 minutes of waking up in the morning. If I drink coffee with milk in, the milk being say 25 calories, is this the same as eating? It is still calories being consumed. What do you think?

Thanks joinbug. Doing presentations still isn't my thing but given the torture I put myself through to come up with the slides and the gym workouts I skipped as result, it is just as well I got a pat on the back
Theresa, I think the theory is this helps get your metabolism get going after that long fast during your sleep. Not sure about whether drinking your calories is any worse than solid calories for this purpose, but in general "don't drink your calories". Actually just the other day I was feeling a bit guilty about hardly ever chewing my fruit [because they're pre-chewed by my food-processor, the device I use to make all my smoothies]. However just now with my stock of milk overflowing probably is not the time to scale back on smoothies!

Thursday
online for a bit, breakfast was mostly salads, a bit late for pump, it was a member's birthday and she brough a box of 'Celebrations' chocolates (I had a mini-snickers). I resisted eating immediately instead passed Sainsbury's to jot down nutritional information for Celebrations and held out until I was back home. I got 2.5 hours to myself, initially going online and then a very pleasant surprise as a friend I've lost touch with about 4 years ago and recently tried to contact had returned my call - it was great to renew contact [in a way this helps me connect with my own youth experiences] and I'll probably see them in person soon enouh as they work near the hospital I'll be in. (and hi Kirsten, if you've actually made it here!)
In college sessions actually progressed on the relevant assignments (spreadsheets and software development respectively). Accepted a couple of skittles from Will. This was over by 5pm and I stayed behind an hour in the library doing my own online things. Within minutes of starting to cycle I realised that either I have developed a puncture on the front tyre or (more likely) some vandal had let the air out whilst I was in college. Unfortunately I had no choice but to continue riding on the deflated tyre thus guaranteeing damage [even if all the vandal did was to let air out]. I rode to LIDL to stock up on chewing gum which I'm unexpectedly out of again [buying the shop's entire stock - there seems to be a silly arrangement wherby the chewing gums come in multiple flavours but the one I think is best (lemon and honey) is under-represented, and it looks like other people feel the same way I do and prefer that flavour. Surely there ought to be a better way for the shop to only buy what customers want to buy!
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=953&jump_to=14453#p14453 This link describes my experiences at a meeting for local residents organised by my Parish council, almost 2 years ago which is memorable to me as a catalyst for a complete breakdown of my 'dieting compliance' of approximately 3 months and heading towards binge-land for about a week. It was interesting to draw parallels, for example I came prepared with my own food today but that was also the case bac then - except this time I had no qualms about eating my own things. I got there just after 6.30pm and after greeting the chairman I looked over the refreshments table. There were biscuits (cookies to you Americans), tea and coffee making facilities, a lot of triangular sandwiches, some mini-wraps and a couple of large bowls of tortilla chips. There was some garnish (lettuce and peppers) decorating the sandwiches. I took a plate and helped myself to some garnish and one wrap. I disassembled the wrap and ate the insides (a mixture of salad, fried onions, black olives and feta cheese.) I weighed the mixture but did not separately weigh individual components. I left the wrap uneaten. Next stop was coffee: armed with my own artificial sweetner dispenser, this was the easy choice, and I drunk 3 cups over the next 40 minutes. Foodwise I started nibbling on my own food, starting with broccoli (still in the refreshments area) and later on during the 2-hour meeting [15 residents like myself and 5 councillors] I continued munching on vegetables from my boxes, working through my brussel sprouts and cabbage-medley. The meeting itself dragged on for a bit though it was an interesting insight after 1.5 years of non-involvement with local goernment. People living just yards away from me are experiencing greatly reduced quality of life due to anti-social behaviour, this truly is an inner-city area. [side-note, who should be sitting next to me at the meeting but the first person who shook my hand as I walked into my first OA meeting]. On my way out, observing that refreshments were still on the table, I grabbed 3 mini-wraps for later processing at home. Got home around 9.15pm
Gift from mum: 900g celery. Macronutrients are typical. Unusually some grains feature in the breakdown. Food weight always climbs up unless I make an effort to curb it. Tomorrow is 1800 calories (and possible more than one 'high' day). Bedtime well after 3am.

Friday
Got up and did online things then headed out to step class on foot (not wishing to risk my bike). I usually get away with placing double-risers back under my step for the last peak track but I had no partners in crime and the instructor picked on me so I had to take them out again to avoid confrontation (so I was a little resentful, and aware that I had not peaked to the extent I could). On the walk home I treated myself to 3 pineapples for £1. Mum was in touch from Bletchley and we did some remote-control shopping. At Poundland she got me new headphones (as requested) and described what other gadgets were available. My impluse-purchase was a laptop-security-lock which will no doubt come in handy when I take my laptop into hospital. I also directed mum to purchase a USB hub. (everything at poundland is £1, naturally). I also asked her to buy more chewing gum from the Bletchley branch of LIDL (as I've bought the entire chewing gum stoc of the local branch a few days ago). She brought those over later on. Later still in the afternoon she woke me up from a nap during a further surprise visit to deliver bargains she unexpectedly negotiated at the market. She got a price of £2 for a 5kg 'wholesale-box' of courgettes and there is still some confusion over whether this is a repeatable price point or a mistake/misunderstanding. I stayed up and did a bit on my computer project (the one I hardly have time for due to the volume of emails I read) before heading out to OA armed with the printouts I made of the quarterly newsletter and a rather heavy bicycle footpump (which I ended up not needin). One theory was that I did not have a puncture at all but someone let the air out of my tyre and amazingly cycling for 45 minutes on a deflated tyre did not destroy the tube.
The OA meeting was remarkable in having 2 newcomers, the other thing has to do with the sentiment "OA is not a diet and calories club". You may recall that I do not always feel comfortable with this as it means my hands are tied behind my back when it comes to talking about overweight or obese members who simply will not educate themselves on how to lose weight, so when they are abstinent they may not go through the turmoil of an eating disorder but they do not gain a healthy weight. Well, one member shared that, after 4 years of abstinence in the program they finally decided to count calories and instantly discovered that their 3000-calories-per-day (some from whole-grains and raw nuts and seeds) is getting in their way of getting their BMI down to 25. Naturally I was saying "I told you so" in my head. For my part I shared the internal confusion I have about whether I want to be eating low (1400 calories), do I really want to lose more? Do I really believe that going so low is necessary as a life-extension measure?
After the meeting I cycled over to mum's, arriving at 8.30pm. My mum is somewhat techno-phobic. She had the idea of listening to Dr Fuhrman's radio programs [ drfuhrman.com/radio] at the gym. She purchased a 512MB MP3 player and it was my job to show her how to use it: connecting a USB device, safely dismounting one, browsing files using My Computer, right-clicking an MP3 file on the internet and saving to the player, deleting unwanted songs from the player, actually using the MP3 player (on,off, play, pause, volume, change song). She was making notes. After an hour or so she was mentally exhausted - I think a repeat session will be necessary.
Weight of food (not inclding milk) is 3609-665 = 2944g (6.5lb). That's still not very low (last meal was pumpkin seeds and TVP)

| nirmk.byethost13.com/staticfood/ac1.htm I finally managed to fix it so I can type a few characters and display the list of foods I have defined that match. For example milk matches milk-chocolate and skimmed-milk. This is a key step on the (long) road to creating a usable web-based program that allows data entry of the foods I eat.

Saturday
Got up, made myself a fruit smoothie and then got lost in online things until Nash called, which was useful as it reminded me I needed to head out to the gym. Great combat and pump classes followed, finishing around 11.15am. We've all been asked to spare some time in the afternoon and I agreed. With one hour to go there was little point in leaving the complex. The bank of computers was rather unusable but the sauna was working and so was my MP3 player. The step demonstration with Jo was up first. She had initiative walking around the cardio machine asking girls whether they wanted to try step - we did 2.5 songs together. Angela was up next - I think she largely relied on some of the people previously gathered by Jo plus the 'old-timers' (including myself) she co-erced to join earlier (there were 4 of us). Angela stretched her demo to 7 songs: the first 3, the last 2 and the conditioning and stretch tracks. After 2 songs most of the people trying it out lost interest and by the last few it was just Angela and the 4 of us. This was a helpful reminder that I am energised by exercising with others and numbers make a difference. About 1.5 years ago whilst still a member of another gym I came here for a one day trial http://www.caloriesperhour.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=953&jump_to=21554#p21554 and I was most impressed by the numbers and energy of the members here. Finally home around 1.30pm and lunch was almost 6 hours after breakfast (with no hunger or obsession about it)
I wonder if I should be thanking my old gym for getting rid of me. It meant that I finally started going to a better gym. It also sent me into such a binge-eating spiral that finally revealed to me that I was a compulsive over-eater (though I am sure those reading my diary at the time would have known). Yesterday a new member called John started a diary and I was thinking him lucky: he already knows he is a compulsive over-eater, I've been 'dieting' since at least early 2004 and it took me just under 3 years of yo-yoing to figure it out!
Foodwise I decided today would focus on fruit and high-calorie vegetables (jerusalem artichokes and parsnips) and this was the case apart from one serving of brussel sprouts that snack in. I'm continuing on my drive to use up milk. I could have used TVP to provide the required protein boost but instead I opted to go for animal products in a big way (they're so 'in my face' whenever I open the freezer door, taking up room where my fruit should be). Throwing things out is not in my nature, in fact I appear to continue to buy more meat and fish 'at the right prices'. I had 7 50-calorie-servings. Altogether including the milk 545 (30.3%) of my calories are from animal products! The SAD (Standard American Diet) has 42% of calories from animal products and Dr Fuhrman would like it to be well under 10%, so I'm hardly a model of healthy eating today. I'll have to eat like this for a while to make space in my freezer. Eating this way makes me feel guilty at times.
I was expecting my fruit-focus to result in a light-weight day. Food weighed 3219g, or 2662g once I subtracted the weight of the milk. That is the lightest it has been in a while but still not particularly light.
One remarkable thing was that I didn't eat before bedtime. My last meal was between 10 and 11pm and I stayed up till around 2am with nothing more than chewing gums to work on my javascript/php project (the one I neglect for weeks at a time).

Thanks for your tips! I have posted one more question in my diary.
I have read yours on a daily basis and I think when I emailed, I said I was impressed with the science. I think I am dragging and kicking myself to doing the same.
I also visit your links and nearly at the end of bffm. Dr furmans book doesn't seem to be available in the uk. I have to get it via amazon from a us seller. Can you get it here?
I am off to visit Dr durmans radio show.

There are 4 major book stores in Milton Keynes, they are all out of Dr Fuhrman's book 'Eat To Live' but all were willing to order it when I asked last year. Oh, and I have the copy out of the library. The UK version was published by piatkus.co.uk has price printed as £6.99, ISBN 0 7499 2386 5. My friend bought Disease-Proof Your Child so that must also be published locally. [The UK version has some terms and units converted for the local audience]. Mind you it now seems Amazon is not selling new copies of it ETL but it is available through its 'marketplace'

Hi Nir,
Thanks for visiting my diary. You have obviously spent a great deal of time studying nutrition and applying it to your daily life. Your diary is so extensive as a newbie I've only just read the most recent little bit. Thanks for the link on cancer nutrition I will be passing that over to my husband L to read. I hope to read more of your diary soon! And wishing you the best possible outcome with your upcoming surgery. I can appreciate how much a successful outcome could mean to you. Will be sending all good wishes and thoughts your way.

Hi Molly, I've learnt a lot about nutrition on my journey with CPH. In fact I got the link to the Cancer Survivor's Guide from another member here. Thanks for your well-wishes!
Sunday
10-11 months ago my freezer was rather empty and I was nervous about how I'd feed myself and snapped up a large number of loaves of wholemeal bread. However I've since come to realise that I'm not going to be big consumer of grains and have let go of most of the loaves but two remained. Today I took one of the loaves out, had one slice (to remind myself of the merits of bread) and discarded the rest. So I still have one loaf left just-in-case. Curiously items have re-arranged themselves and there does not seem to be any more room in the freezer???
In a spare moment started on the next leg of my project, understanding the 'DataTable' component, but my heart wasn't in it. Lots of people turned up for my workouts, which were great. Tomorrow is back to college and so also back to eating more vegetables (though today I did hit Dr Fuhrman's 2lb-of-veggies target). Food less the milk weighed 3062g.

Monday
Poor night of sleep; college non-eventful and boring; relaxed in the afternoon borderline-tired but didn't nap; arranged to have my will signed and witnessed on Friday; Rob invited me to the pub - 2 hours later decided to investigate whether the invitation was still current and spent just under an hour with him at Lloyds (mostly discussing computer things), good combat class, snapped up some melons on the way back. Early night.

| Ya know, I'm totally envious of your grocery shopping ability. I paid $1.99/pound for brocolli this weekend. $3.99 for a pint of blackberries. It's totally disgraceful. It's no wonder Americans are so fat. Let's see....a whole meal for $3.00 on the McD's dollar menu or a pint of blackberries for a buck more. :(

The shops over here are just as bad. This is why I visit them so often, to grab bargains. For example yesterday I had 5 galia melons for 15p each. Yet this was only because the shop has arbitrarily decided it must sell them by January 28th (there was nothing wrong with them). A careful examination of the sticker reveals that earlier that day that melon was retailing for £1.78 (about $3.50)
I visit the shops looking for bargains as often as my schedule allows. I often leave the shop empty-handed, but sometimes I am rewarded.

Tuesday
Had a really poor night's sleep but Nash woke me up ealy so spent the morning catching up with internet. At college spent the website session progressing on the assignment, had lots of vegetables for lunch, at computer systems did a bit of assignment work and a lot of chatting; at home more internet then headed out. At Sainsbury's 6.45pm was a good time to arrive - walked away with over 11 kilos (25 lb) of produce for £2.35 (under $5) - so yes abnormalapathy I got lucky yet again. Slightly late for pump then called mum to help transport my goodies (a couple of melons went her way). Latish night. Last meal was TVP and cashew nuts.

Wednesday
Reminded of a looming deadline for the information systems assignment and then were set a new largish graphics assignment. Wound down at counselling. At home wasn't sure whether to continue my 1400-calorie day or allow more calories. Nash called and asked why I had not called him at lunch or at 5pm - I said I had no news and apparently this wasn't sufficent reason (we spoke around 8.40am). Enjoyed combat. Mum came over to deliver some bargains: quantities were not large but prices were good. I've never tried Chikoo before (it is a fruit). It was down from £1.79 to 5p. At the original price, there is 0 chance of me having it again, of course. Overall spent 53p for 4.64kg (10lb for $1) all credit to mum for being there at the right time.
At around midnight could have easily ended up at 1400 calories instead treated myself to bananas and milk and end up at 1800 instead (and why not; I'm normally far too afraid of bananas). Food weighed 4964g, or 3818g if you subtract the 1146g of milk (yes, that much!)

| These days the best bargains are Tesco (at some point between 8 and 9pm, it is a 24 hour store), also Sainsbury (between 6 and 8pm) that's what works at the moment in Milton Keynes (on weekdays)

Thursday
An early start to the day (listening to last night's podcast). Fruit dominated food for the day. Decided to change the way I read the forums to 'digest mode' to keep myself from checking the forums too frequently. Headed out for a morning pump class - on the way back queued at the bank to deposit a small cheque and at the pharmacy to collect meds. Waited for 5 minutes at starbucks for it to stop raining heavily so I could cross the road and get back home. A friend of mine wanted to keep a weight-loss diary, I recommended CPH but she was turned off by the fact other people can reply to your diary and ended up setting up a blog on another site. Had a nap in the afternoon. I feel as though a lot of my time is wasted by listening to daily lists - this is an issue I'll need to deal with, I think it parallels my former TV addiction.
Instead of being happy with the bargains that she _did_ bag, mum was stressing about all the bargains she missed - apparently today 8pm was far too late for Tesco, reductions were done much earlier (presumably related to the really poor weather we've had today). Makes me think about OWF's cortisol saga. No wonder my mum has high blood pressure - she was born to stress, and make drama where none is required.
Had an early night. I've noticed that this is more likely now that I'm having my last meal around 10pm (previously I was assuming I'd be staying up later and thus saving up calories for a midnight meal).

Friday
Got up early - around 6.30am. An hour later started the day with pizza (I burnt the first slice but had better results with the next two) didn't eat them all and gave myself the calorie discount. This was my 'treat' instead of fruit.
Then set off early to the gym. Today is the 1st of the month and I anticipated technical problems (I was originally going to have my operation earlier and cancelled the gym, so despite having paid my gym dues for February back on the 9th of January I imagined there would be some incompetence at play - however I was wrong so I passed away the time reading a printout of a technical article about YUI DataTable.
Step was fun, then instead of walking through the market I went home via the wedding show, snapping up something which was either a chocolate truffle or a chocoloate liquor , not quite sure which (but it was very nice). The compulsive in me would have eaten one on the spot and taken one for later, then walked around seeing if there were any other stalls oferring anything. The compulsive-in-recovery me took one chocolate and got out of there as quickly as I could, waiting to eat it later when I can weigh it (as it turns out this was 10 minutes later whilst at a queue at the pharmacy for the 4 capsules they were unable to give me yesterday due to a stock shortage).
When I got home I changed the calorie target from 1800 down to 1400 on the computer, this will give me a buffer in case I end up celebrating Verity's birthday with alcohol (after OA). It also means more vegetables less fruit.
Next, mum drove me to the will-signing at the solicitor's, so I'll be "ready to go" (anybody in the wings for 'senior administrator' in case I don't make it? ). Mum provided 1.1kg of courgettes as a gift. The hospital called back and clarified that I am to discontinue both medicnes on Monday (a week prior to a videogram test). I managed to forget one of my phones in mum's car.
By the time I left for OA I've had 900 calories and 2800g of food (about 6lb). I picked my phone up when cycling towards OA. It was bitterly cold on the way there and even worse on the way back. The meeting had 3 people coming back for their 2nd visit, and one person returning after a 3-year absence. Only the meeting's leader had the combination of more than a year's abstinence and normal weight (I'm 2 weeks away from my first OA birthday) I shared about my college course and the effect it has had on my life, as well as the similarity between alcohol and chocolate in my life (I'm afraid of both - in fact in the case of alcohol, the fear was drilled into me years before I started drinking).
The birthday party were running late. By the time I arrived back at the town centre they were hovering at the Tapas restaurant's bar waiting for a large enough table to be made available (the original plan was that they would be done with their meal by the time I arrived). Extra people were arriving after me and the table was further extended on both sides. I didn't like the nutrition or the prices and didn't order anything. I did however help myself to a free bread roll, and I did sample a bit from three tapas (mostly towards the end when it was clear no-one was going to finish them: mushrooms, green peppers and chick peas). For alcohol I drunk 8 shots of vodka throghout the evening but didn't feel quite as drunk as I was expecting to (I gesss eating so many vegetables had an impact). After the restaurant we moved on to a rather boring non-happening bar. I realised that my MP3 player could overcome the bar's music so I was effectively browsing the internet for a while before deciding to physically relocate myself (because the plan to stay with the group as they migrate to the nightclub wasn't as appealing as the plan to get a good night's sleep and be fresh for my Saturday morning workout).
At home inputted my food and drink to assess the damage, topped up my protein and was delighted to discover there was still room for a fruit smoothie to round the day off. Food: it was a moderate-carb day, to accomodate alcohol. 60.7% of calories from questionable sources - I'm getting no medals today. Well it is a diary of shame.

Saturday
The day started with a productive shower where I lost track of time as I was enveloped in ideas for new SQL queries, followed by fantastic workouts. Combat was uneventful but as we were about to start Pump the club's stereo had eaten Angela's CD and was neither playing nor ejecting it. We did the warm-up track in silence and by the time we were ready for squats help arrived in the form of a portable CD player (brute force was used to eject the CD from the other player) and we continued 'normally', abbreviating abs and stretches due to overrunning. I did a really thorough scan of the wedding show to see what other chocolates were available but it turns out that my quick pick on Friday was essentially the only one available (Doh) and very tatsty it was too.
In the afternoon mum brought along some greens at a so-so price as well as 2.2kg of jerusalem artichokes that dad recently dug up at the allotment. It was around midnight when I finally got around to implementing my SQL ideas.
The following may be Too Much Information for some: I have a medical exam in a week's time and I've been asked to discontinue a couple of medications and as a result going to the smallest room in the house is now less joy than it previously was, think: moaning and groaning. All in the name of science, I guess.

Sunday
A 'false start' to the day had me having 'breakfast' from 8.15am till 9.40am but running out of steam and napping until mid afternoon before getting going again. 2nd meal 4.45pm-5.10pm before heading out to the gym for step and pump workouts, after which was catching up with a gym member I've not seen for a while [remember the girl who was deliberately reducing her body pump weights?] in a story most of you will find familiar, she has time to work out but no time to count calories ['family comes first']. Another 'meal' from 8.40pm till 10.40pm and a relatively early bedtime. I somehow don't think this is what is meant by '3 meals a day'. This is stretching the concept somewhat. Excluding my milk (720ml), food weighed just 2.2kg i.e. less than 5lb - 'lightness' achieved with starchy vegetables and bananas (where are the non-starchy vegetables?). There's approximately one more day's worth of milk before I'm done with it and back to Whey Protein. As for my annoyance with a freezer full of animals that has me eating lots of them in an attempt to reclaim the freezer, I think there are still miles in that drive.
7 day food shopping totals: 0.75 + 2.35 + 0.53 + 0.45 + 0 + 0.48 + 0 = £4.56.

Get a nice thick piece of rubber to bite on when you go to the little room, it might help a little! Ouch! I'm sympathising with you there. But at least you are not letting it change your good habits. ood for you!
The girl who hasn't got time to count calories could be told that if she spends two hours once a week on CPH's calculators she could print a list of the calories of foods that she mostly eats and keep it with her for the week, that's all it will take to keep track +- 90% of the time. My workouts are more time consuming. But it is much easier to make excuses for not wanting to try a little harder.

Thanks Theresa. I asked mum about where to get something like this and she queried whether rubber is a carcinogen. I guess I should be grateful that I don't have a biting instinct. I'm finding that there are some rather subtle muscle-control skills there: send the right 'signal' and less pain results.
In 2005 I would spend over 10 hours a week exercising but did not monitor what I ate. I gained over 10 pounds, mostly fat.
Monday
I was up at 5am and decided to try the 6.45am Spin class I'm never up early enough for. It was well attended and challenging (but at the end of the day Spin is my least favourite cardio class).
Later on there was a pattern repeating itself twice: made myself a smoothie with some banana, some other fruit (melon and clementine respectively) and milk, on both ocassions the ingredients weighed about 600g but given enough time in the food processor expanded to about 2 litres volume; on both ocassions I was stuffed after eating the 'ice-cream' smoothie (on the first ocassion I had to put the remainder in the freezer as I was in pain and unable to finish it). In both cases this led to a post-shake recovery nap.
At 6.30pm I met Phil at the cinema lobby to see Juno, a film that was well worth watching (I'd even go as far as to say it was worth missing Body Combat to see). I have to wipe the odd tear from my eye when I watch a film like that.
I am a complete failure as far as weight loss is concerned. I have not lost a pound in ages. My maintenance calories are currently around 2100 and for months I have been at a deficit, alternating between 1800 (a 14% deficit) and 1400 (a 33% deficit). Currently mostly at 1800. I am the poster-child for a plateau. Lucky then that this is probably because my body thinks that I am at just the right weight [my BMI is is 19.95, my body fat is around 11-12%]. If I want to get more cut I'm pretty sure that going low-carb (more veg, less fruit) is the only approach that will work, but at the moment I am not willing to let go of the fruit. One day the willingness may change. I am also ignoring my mum when she asserts that my fruit consumption places me at risk of diabetes [I think she is wrong].
I'm finally done with those 14 pints of skimmed milk - they are all gone (shakes will now feature Whey powder once more). Today vegetables featured more prominently and as a direct result fewer calories came from animal products. Over the last few days I've been making inroads into the ridiculously large number of bananas in the freezer (34% of calories from bananas today). Historically I've been afraid of bananas: variously because I used to binge on them and because I imagine being hungry if I take significant amounts of my calories from the relatively calorie-dense fruit, but I'm slowly changing. I'm also pleased with the smaller number of 'meal' ocassions. Small steps in the right direction.

Oh, I LOVED that movie! i'm sad that it didn't win any SAG awards. I adored the girl who played Juno. What a neat character. and interestingly, it took place in my home state, though i am not sure if it was actually filmed here.... but it was neat to hear St. Cloud (a town i lived in for years) mentioned. two thumbs up!

I've got to recommend "No country for old men" Coen brothers movie. Not a weepy, but violent, yet funny!! Excellent. Same guys that made "Fargo"

If you're familiar with the BAFTAs, they are coming up soon and Juno is up for one. On Thursday I'm scheduled to see another BAFTA-nominated film so a report will follow.
Tuesday
I spent most of the day online (when I wasn't eating or napping). At 4pm mum came over to deliver much-needed medical supplies. Main meals were 12.15pm-2pm (a rather late breakfast), 4.10-5.21pm (pre-workout meal), 9.56-11.22pm (post-workout meal). I am guessing that 2-hour meals look odd to most. At least I wasn't eating most of the time.
Enjoyed my pump workout. I turned up early at the gym as I wanted a pre-workout shower this was lucky as there were unexpected problems - apparently the £44 I paid for the month of February was not enough as the gym dues have now gone up to £46 so the automatic barriers did not work for me. I paid the £2 difference and got a receipt.
In the evening I got a call, am due to meet up with someone I've not seen for a few years as she is visiting Milton Keynes from her native Germany. She is doing a shadowing placement over here as part of being a medical student.
Food was sub 3 kilos though unusually for me I felt thirsty during the day and supplemented with an extra one-litre bottle (in addition to the bottle I drunk at the gym). For some reason I was compelled to measure the amount I drink in a maximal 'gulp' by subtracting the weight of my bottle before and after taking the gulp. My mouth apparently wants to hold 66ml. Was eating vegetables defensively (worst-condition first) and switched to my 'meat-and-potato mode' where I eat starchy vegetables and fruits, and use animal proteins for balance. Tried to make each serving a different animal (salmon, lamb, turkey, pig, beef, chicken).
Bedtime was almost immediately after the last meal (i.e. early). Sleep was disturbed and of low quality.

Wednesday
I've had double the usual number of hits on this page (500+ hits in under 24 hours) I wonder what is going on!
The plan for the day included two visits to the gym, a counselling appointment and meeting with a friend I've not seen for over 3 years (immediately before heading off for counselling) so these three 'islands' in the day mean just 4 opportunities to be home (for eating and being online). The day did indeed follow that plan.
At the gym, admin has gone from bad to worse. In the morning I was told again that I owed them £2 (showed them my £2 receipt to show that I don't) yet by the evening somebody told me I owe them £46 and suggested I'll need to speak to someone 'from administration' tomorrow. This is getting ridiculous. The morning step was good except that (unusually) I was asked to take raisers out for the speed-step class (never happened before - in my opinion the instructor is having a power trip). I felt 'underworked' for both speed-step and the 'final peak' tracks! Made me reflect about how in general I am lazy (e.g. in a spin class) but in certain circumstances I recognise I am not working hard enough. Combat was marred by my underpants constantly falling off (within my shorts) on account of failure of the rubber wasteband. I badly needed a safety pin. It was embarassing.
I met up with Beate and I seemed to talk quite a bit about traumatic events of the last 3 or 4 years. We found ourselves reading alound from the Eat To Live book I was carrying in my bag. I was all talk as far as healthy eating was concerned but ate all of my 'Rubbish' calories in her presence: a square of her German 'Alphen' chocolate, fruit-scone sample at Marks & Spenser and almost a quarter of the Kit Kat Chunky bar she settled on after originally hunting for a packet of cookies. Did I mention she's a medical student? We're due to meet again next week.
At counselling I talked about how major changes in the last week are making me feel, curiously I was 'done talking' after half an hour and it was observed I'm more "chilled" than usual.
Food at the 4 main eating ocassions derived most calories from fruit smoothies, propped up with 6 additional 50-calorie animal protein portions. I was in bed by 11pm but had an online session between 3am-6am during which I filled my MP3 player with stuff for next few days. ETL calls for 1lb of raw veg and 1lb cooked veg - today I ate zero veg . I did manage to hit a low number for overall food weight (2228g is under 5lb of food).

Thursday
At pump class, put my chest weight back up to to 20kg (44lb). anybody that wants to laugh please remember it is a 5 minute song. I was reflecting that amongst the women I'm attracted to there are both examples of ribbed-abs-leanness (Sam,Nina) and more curvy (Max,Michelle). The curvy people are not overweight (or if they are then no more than BMI 26 at a guess) I have previously been aware that I lean is attractive but obviously not exclusively so. I wonder if I would still find the curvy people attractive if they became leaner - probably. I walked home throgh a pub and a couple of tables had half-finished breakfasts including hash-browns (potatos with breading and possibly grilled or deep-fried) and I had unwelcome thoughts (which I did not act upon) of scavanging one. How would I behave if I have a legitimate opportunity to eat one? Continuing on my walk home from the gym I did pick up cheese and fruit-cake samples at Waitrose and some abandoned yogurt-coated-raisins, consuming all with 2 hours of getting home.
Had a nap after a long online session. In the evening met up with Phil to see The Bourne Ultimatum, a fast-paced and action packed thriller that (appropriately) sent me flashbacks - perhaps in a previous life I've watched a similar film called The Bourne Identity. Other recent examples have been flashbacks to a times where I've been addicted to television and a flashback to my poetry-writing phase, both experienced at some time this week. Accepted a couple of Jelly Babies from Phil, who was enthusing about his new competition-entring hobby that I find it hard to relate to.
Food did include some vegetables today, slightly fewer animal calories, a heavier day than yesterday. One observation is that all my 'rubbish' calories were pretty much instantly forgettable if it wasn't for the fact I journal all the food that passes my lips. Unnecessary (but hardly worth beating myself about).

Yeah You'll get my vote for the more curvy every time!!
I sat in NY in Bryant park in the summer with my 19yr old daughter watching the supermodels leaving the NY fashion show. Boy they were so skinny I don't know how they stand up!! Does nothing for me at all.
Why do you walk home thru pubs. Thats the sort of thing I'd do!!
Blow me down open my prezzies and get "Bourne movie box set"

There was a girl on the train today who had the tiniest waist I'd ever seen, and it actually looked a bit freakish. Pretty much the way Bryant Park looks during Fashion Week, yeah. :)
I thought Bourne Ultimatum was a good action movie, but really just a regurgitation of the rest of the series. I have a lot of Oscar nominees to catch up on.

artistjohn, when I'm walking, I can walk through the pub or around it - on cold days this is about 20-30 metres either in a warm building or out in the cold (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). Perhaps you asked for the Bourne set as a program but have since been 'programmed' to forget that you did so...
I guess my favourite lean people are also well-toned. One of them uses a 17.5kg (38.5lb) bar for chest and 30kg (66lb) bar for squats. I doubt your average supermodel does!
Friday
Laptop annoyed me big-time by crashing again for no reason; I headed out for a morning body step class with a few uncoordinate beginners. I cycled with no stops and avoided all temptations. Chased the hospital for my pre-operation hospital stay which has not arrived. It might be delayed in the post or it might have not been sent but it was emailed to me so I'm OK. It turns out the hospital is paying £68 to put me up in a 3-star hotel for the night - this must mean that putting me up in a hospital bed for the night would cost them more, so my 10 night stay in hospital would trivially cost the hospital more than £680. This, of course, does not even include the cost of the operation. Luckily the NHS is free at the point of use. I needed to print the hotel reservation and entered my parents' house using my key without knocking or ringing the bell. Unfortunately my dad was changing clothes at the precise moment I arrived and much shouting ensued. Oops.
Armed with my printout I continued cycling on my way to an interesting OA meeting which featured a chair by a woman with over 3 years of recovery - a compelling story of a saved marriage with husband and wife both now in recovery in different programs, both doing steps and both sharing the same sponsor. Our 10-strong meeting also featured 3 relative newbies with 3, 2 and 1 meetings under their belts respectively. A lot of people stayed behind to chat after the meeting - when I left 50 minutes after the end of the meeting some people were still staying behind chatting, a meeting to remember. Next week I shall have my first OA birthday and it turns out that another member of the group will have their 2nd OA birthday in that same meeting. I am probably the first person in this meeting to reach a year's abstinence without having a sponsor or doing steps so I don't expect I'll be asked to 'chair' just yet.
Percentages looking respectable today, as is vegetable consumption. Bananas provided 42.6% of total calories. Only had three meals today but the middle meal was from 12.09pm till 4.55pm (well there was a one-hour gap at one point, so perhaps I can split it into 2 meals: 12.09pm - 1.52pm and 2.52pm - 4.55pm) either way I'm not getting any medals for this eating pattern.

Saturday
Started the day with an hour of preparing vegetables in silence. Silence is rare for me I always seem to have some sort of speech in the background but silence is so nice and calming. Preparing vegetables is both theraputic and ensures I don't forget to eat them later in the day (and a more productive use of the spare hour I found myself having by virtue of naturally waking up early). Putting all my green vegetables in the fridge door made my shortage more real so later in the day I tried contacting mum and dad (mum: to greenlight further purchases, dad: to greenlight him digging up more parsnips) - it was at that point that I was reminded that they were on a rare day trip to Wolverhampton (their first opportnity to visit my sister at the home she moved the Christmas before last).
I headed out to the gym, deliberately cycling and intending to head home directly after the workout without any pitstops (no sampling). Workouts were good. I reminded Angela that I only have 2 more Saturday workouts before my long absence from exercise. We again had to use the ghetto blaster as the stereo which was briefly 'fixed' during the week was once more not working - but I enjoyed my workouts.
Next I deliberately walked with my books to the library rather than renew them by phone so that I'll be able to renew them the next few times by phone, when my health issues will make a visit more complicated. The library is undergoing construction work so you have to walk around to the back of the building and climb about 3 flights of stairs instead of normal (using the ground-floor desk) but I had my MP3 player for distraction.
Finally home I was ready to continue my project from 1am last night, of trying to install my 3G mobile phone as a USB broadband modem. The problem was that it took ages to 'authenticate' and then announced the computer was connected but navigating to web-pages on the internet (like 'Google') failed miserably, in fact you could not even Ping them. Calling Technical Support was something I dreaded but started the process around noon.
This took 3 or 4 hours of my day. I was directed to attempt a number of experiments: creating dial-up connections both using the Sony Ericson software and using the windows networking wizard, re-installing the software making sure the phone was disconnected at the time, installing on a different computer, downloading and installing a more recent version of the software, and trying to install on Windows XP (my laptop dual-boots but Windows 2000 SP4 is my preferred OS and is where all my applications are installed, the XP is rather bare!). Along the way we discovered that the internet does in fact work but DNS does not, thus Ping would work on an IP (numerical) address, as would Internet Explorer - so another test was to explicitly specify some DNS servers but this did not help as the problem was not bad DNS servers but some other unknown quantity preventing the DNS lookup from taking place. After more than 3 hours of assistance the technical support person suggested that some aspects of the service only become 'active' after 24 hours so I should wait and call them again if the problem was not resolved by tomorrow.
Left to my own devices, I continued: the XP experiment failed because the v1.20 software I was directed to try would not install due to a missing DLL so I tried installing the v2.0 software I downloaded earlier for another experiment. This did install, the authentication phase was much shorter and it actually worked. This was a relief but then again it was something of a blow as it meant I will have to install and customise my computer all over again - a major project. I felt somewhat 'naked' without access to my calorie-counting software (which was left behind on the W2K boot) but my priority was to first secure the OS against the big bad world so firewall and anti-virus were first priority. I was exhausted and no-where near finished when I collapsed before midnight, and as I've done little else on the day was severely behind on all my reglar online commitments.
Somewhere in the middle I got a call from mum telling me they were stranded on the train back from Wolverhampton to Milton Keynes because the train line goes through Camden (due to the massive fire at Camden Market - the UK's largest market and a top London tourist attraction) though I checked with them an hour or so later and they were already back home.
Had a respectable amount of veg, excessive qantities of fruit (inclding finishing the last of my clementines and cantelope melons: I still have vast quantities of fruit but only 3 types: apples, bananas and galia melon).

Sunday
Sleep was disturbed. When I got going I decided to continue installing 'optional' things on my 'new' XP laptop such as SP2, IE7 and anti-spyware.
Mum showed up to sell on some Swede she bought at Sainsbury's, deliver some mail and hand over a 'rescue-package', her gifts amounting to 6.16kg (13.5lb) of produce: 1kg parsnips 900g courgettes 650g pears 600g carrots 500g spinach 470g savoy-cabbage 400g nectarine 390g fennel 340g broccoli 320g brussel-sprouts 300g mushrooms 170g runner-beans 120g mini-aubergines.
Enjoyed my workouts, more than can be said for a guy trying body pump who left in the middle (leaving his station in the middle of the lunge track).
The Microwave oven I've had for less than a year is making funny noises, the turntable mechanism may be on its last legs.
Called friend Kirsten to arrange meeting her tomorrow at Liverpool Street station in London for the first time in about 4 years. Took ages to catalog and put away mum's food gifts. As will spend much of tomorrow in London, prepared vegetables for my day out.
The post-workout food battle: non-stop eating from 8.08pm till 10.48pm made for what seemed like a less-than-productive evening; nor is my supposed objective of keeping food 'light' materialising in my thinking and consecuently days have been heavy. At least rubbish calories have been contained. I wonder if I ought to put an arbitrary limit on animals (and then switch to TVP for the rest of the day), to balance my wish to get rid of them with sane behaviour for someone who believes they're just not good for you! After a few low-fat days I've been working on another objective: to keep fat at more than 15% of calories.

Hi Nir
What would you say is the reason for it being not good to drink one's calories?

because this way you don't feel yourself up and are in danger of consuming more calories.
They did research giving people a calorific drink before a meal and they ate the same as the people who drunk the no-calorie drink i.e. drink calories did not feel them up so they still ate as many food calories.
Of course if you have fantastic will power and awareness of calorie then go ahead.
For fruit juices, the fruit is better as it contains the pulp and thus more fibre.

Monday
Stayed up when I got up around 5am (instead of going back to bed as I usually would) and made the 6.45am Spin class, meeting Carol who was back from her holiday. Then back home to be online before heading out around 11.20am, making my London Liverpool Street destination at 1pm. Paying £2.70 extra to go on a Virgin train (instead of a reglar one) was a waste as despite having access to a power point there was no broadband reception and in fact it made me worry that something was wrong. On the trip back it would have been a 2-hour wait for the next Virgin train to MK so decided to take a different train.
It was nice to see Kirsten. She's remarked that I was showing OCD tendencies and, having not seen me in 4 years, they have become more pronounced. Basically I choose not to care. That is, leaving aside whether this is true then even if treatment was freely available I am inclined not to take it up (or at least not to expend energy looking for it). She also made a comment about the unappealing state of my veggies (which as you'll recall were mostly new to me, acquired from mum the day before). I guess it goes hand in hand with not wishing to spend the earth on fresh produce.
I then had plenty of time to wait at hospital - I spent much of it being relieved that the internet does in fact work within the hospital building, trying two locations (one of which being the Ward I'll most likely call home in a couple of weeks). My reply to Theresa (above) was posted from hospital. The procedure I travelled to hospital for (video urodynamics) was over and done with in 15 minutes and determined I feel the need to pee (with a corresponding pressure level building up in my bladder) when it contains 100ml of urine. It is perhaps worth mentioning my medications do make life slightly more bearable so I'm looking forward to taking them again starting tomorrow.
I was back at home by 6.30pm so technically I could have gone to the 7pm Step class but was feeling so tired I knew there was little point. Mum called from Sainsbury's to vent that any reductions have evidently occurred much earlier in the day and she wished she had not bothered coming out. A sample of Horlicks malted chocolate 'extra light' arrived this morning and I decided to prepare it - it was chocolatey but not sweet enough for my taste-buds so I added 3 no-calorie artificial sweetners to it. Ate a bunch of fruit smoothies before falling asleep at 9pm for a much needed nap.
I'm trying out a new rule about having no more than 3 x 50-calorie animal protein servings (apart from any Whey powder I'm having). I brought back half of the veggies I took with me to London bt overall veggie consumption still quite high and a heavy day was had.

Thanks Nir! It's quite true that you don't feel as full when drinking colories as when eating them. I think in future I will have a whey drink and then eat a fruit that I would have put in the liquidiser with the whey drink and a nibble on a tablespoon of flaxseed after. That way I will have a two course breakfast for the calories of one.
I am so glad that you will be online during your hospital stay. I think most of us would feel lost without reading your diary daily. You can also educate us on what happens.

I should point out that when you're liquidising fruit, you are not losing everything - you still have the pulp but I guess some of the digestion is already done for you. Either way there is no way I'm giving up on my ice-cream-smoothies, even if this pre-digestion increases their glycemic index (which it allegedly does). The glycemic index will be moderated by the fact I'm consuming them with the Whey Powder (protein) and in any event the consistency I get is not that of a drink but that of a more 'solid' ice-cream
btw unless you grind flax seeds (for example, in a food processor - a quantity of 50g seems to work best) they just go through you and are not absorbed, apparently - I guess if you chew them a lot you might get lucky.
