I have 21 weeks until my vacation around Memorial Day next spring. Losing 21 pounds would be great. I'd be down to my lowest weight in three years.
Lately I've been gaining weight slowly but steadily, the problem being my small bank account and the fact that I'm moving into the next size up. So rather than buying new clothes I think I'll just try to wriggle back into my old ones. I don't have to be a size 4 by the end of this but I would like to feel lighter and more comfortable in my clothes.
I plan on exercising in the mornings before I plop myself in front of the tv at 9 am like I've been doing the past several weeks. I'm not going to strain myself horribly because it just gives me migraines. So do artificial sweeteners, it turns out, which means I've been using sugar in my coffee for over a month. I still eat things like fried fish, french fries, microwave popcorn, cheese puffs, hershey kisses, and chicken nuggets but I'll make a conscious effort to pare it down a little. I figure once I start exercising and feeling better I won't feel the need to eat them as much.
Starting weight: 159
Goal weight: 138
Short-term goal: zip up my knee-high boots!

Hi Ash, I get migraines too. I try to mostly stay away from the artificial sweeteners. I use either sugar or stevia. Have you tried Stevia? It is kind of expensive though, when your budget is really tight.
I've been trying out some alternatives for my migraines since I pretty much no longer use prescription meds. Stuff that I've noticed help with migraines are B vitamins, magnesium, Turmeric (lowers inflammation, and helps with estrogen problems too), Coleus Forskohlii (relaxes smooth muscles, dilates blood vessels - great for head aches and muscle aches too.)
My last two mestrual cycles I didn't get my usual migraines because I took turmeric or Coleus Forskohlii that week. It was so nice.
Anyway best of luck to you!
Here's to getting in shape for the warm weather!

I don't know how often I'll update this but I figured a first day post was prudent.
I got out of bed later than planned but I did get moving and did 30 minutes of cycling and half of my old weight-lifting regime. I'm going to alternate the two halves by day. My intake was around 1,975 today which is good considering how many nuts I ate. The only really bad thing I had today was 1/4 can of vanilla coke and two cookies. Our landlord sent us a cookie arrangement as our Christmas. Of course we can't stay out of it.

I think the key thing is what proportion of your calories the junk represents. 10% is OK, 50% and you're never out of the danger zone. If you keep eating addictive foods in non-trivial quantities you'll (surprise) remain addicted and it will always be a matter of willpower. (and it wasn't long since I was at the 50% mark with the junk, perhaps around February?)
As for the artificial sweetener game, I used them for years. Choosing mine based on cost I was using a tablet that contained both Sodium Cyclamate and Saccharin. I used them for years. I noticed no side effect apart of course from a sustained sweet tooth (I needed 3 in my coffee). My turning point was a year ago (ironically, I was hoping to get out of coffee drinking by forcing myself to drink it unsweetened). I am glad I was able to cut those out. I still have a sweet tooth, which I satisfy by eating fresh fruit. (again note - fresh fruit are hardly appealing whilst sweets are on the menu)
Does it sound extreme? It did "from the outside" but it feels rather normal from the inside

Ugh, now I'm remembering why I left this place.
If my current diet of everything deep-fried only makes me gain a pound a month, why the #%@&! wouldn't I be able to work out daily and lose four?

I can only speak for myself. Your strategy "worked" for me when I was 23 in the sense that I lose weight and in fact I could buy my jeans at the kids department. But guess what - it was not a lifestyle change only a diet so it did not stick and I gained weight eventually reaching a larger "highest weight"
It took me until the age of 33 to "grow up" to the point of starting to make the kind of changes I eventually made.
My point is that I can see your attitude in my former self, if I met the former me I would not necessarily know what to say to him to get him to where I am now.
