Hi Joy, Mol, and Midge!   Thanks for the birthday :birthday_cake: wishes!   What better way to celebrate the day, than with some time with my cyber-friends.  You guys are the BEST! (That includes all of you that are so special, and have been here to support me through ups and downs)

I am still being a good girl........eating the other half of my Applebee's salad as I type.

Beth and Joy.........glad to hear you are exploring JUDDDD.    It seems to be working for me.    Just remember, we each have to find what works for us..........what works for one, may not work for another.   We are each such individuals............and the only diet or WOE that will work for us, will be the one we can stick with for the rest of our lives.   Up to this point, I obviously haven't found what I can live with forever, because I gained the weight back again..........not all of it, but surely enough to scare me.    I guess that's why I keep exploring the options.

I love reading about "health" things.   I was just thinking this weekend, about all the magazines I get.   "Prevention", "Health", "Consumers Report on Health", "Nutrition Action Newsletter", Taste of Home's "Light and Tasty", and "Healthy Cooking" and "Natural Health"...........and the hubs gets "Men's Health"   Lots of good information in my house!   It certainly helps me stay on track or get back on track.    I'm so lucky to live in an age of so much information and help.

Calorie range for Alternate Day Diet (JUDDD)

For weight loss:  20-25% of "normal" calories (based on weight, age, activity, height), can go as high as 35%.......should find a level you are comfortable with and can maintain long term

Pat's weight loss range:  20% is 425 calories on DD    25% is 532 calories on DD

Pat's normal calorie range:  2126 (5 ft 6.5 in, 53 yrs., 1-3 days of light activity, 190 lbs)

TUESDAY, JULY 8, 2008

BREAKFAST:  2 WG muffins (240), 2 serv egg beaters (60), 1 sl 2% cheese (50), lt spread (50)

SNACK:  Dannon Light n Fit yogurt (45)

LUNCH:  McD's vanilla cone (150), Progresso Light veg soup (120)

SNACK: mini popcorn (100)

DINNER:  Sweet & Sour chicken and rice (480)

SNACK:  root beer float bar (90)

RUNNING TOTAL:   1385 calories

Does anybody else get disgusted when they can't find a food they want in the grocery store?    For my egg muffins in the morning, I like to use Thomas' multigrain Light english muffins, and neither the local grocery store, or WalMart or Target had them last weekend when I got groceries    What's the difference, you ask?

2 Thomas' multigrain Light:  200 cal.   2 gr fat, 16 gr. fiber, 10 gr. protein

2 Thomas' 100% whole wheat:  240 cal., 2 gr. fat, 6 gr fiber, 10 gr. protein

That's 40 extra calories, and 10 gr. less of fiber........no, it's not a huge difference, (well, the fiber is) but I hate it when none of the stores can carry the product on a regular basis.   It seems to waste my time, when I have to run to different stores for the products I want!   OK, rant over :dizzy:

Beth, before I started JUDDDD, I read through a lot of posts at SparkPeople.com    Look for the Spark Team:  The Alternate-Day Diet, Friends of Dr. Johnson    There are posts there that are really good about how to do the diet.   There's one that's called............."This is for all new members to understand JUDDD"    I think there are several JUDDDD groups there, but I haven't had time to explore them all.

Beth, JUDDD is very interesting!   Besides longevity of life, and the health benefits from Calorie Restriction (CR)..............those days are far easier to stay in control than the days I don't restrict calories.    Today is an UD, and I went to lunch with 2 of my sister-in-laws, to my favorite Mexican restaurant.   I decided to splurge and had some chips/salsa and a burrito.   I feel yucky!   And I still have one more celebration after work today.........the office does a party for birthdays too.   We are going to someone's house this month for drinks, appetizers, and hot dog/brats, etc.    JUDDDD'ers also do Water Fast days...........and I am thinking of doing one on Friday!   The research showed that the greatest health benefits came after 36 hrs. of fasting........in intervals.   If I can't handle it, I can always just have a regular DD.

So, today I am not counting calories...............dangerous?  Maybe!   But the beauty of this plan is that it's important to keep the DD under 500 calories...........but the health benefits don't depend on the calories eaten on the UD's.   You won't lose weight if you continually :pig: out on the UD's..........and actually, I have found I don't feel like pigging out.    Even today's lunch was not huge compared to what I used to eat.....much more modest indeed.    Just more food than I am used to eating now.........when every other day is under 500 calories.

Wicked weather :rain: here today:shock:    When the sky got black...........then green.......we all headed to the basement at work.  It hailed a fair amount, but seems to have passed over quickly.

Hi Pat,

I Hope all is well with the house.  I have been off for a while, went on new meds for my asthma and gained 26 lbs over the last two weeks, went off the meds on Monday and have already dropped 1/2 of that weight. I was holding water like you wouldn't believe, thank goodness that is over.  Not going to do that medicine again, and believe it my Dr. said no way that medicine caused me to gain the weight..........kind of strange that I went off of it and have started loosing the weight and the water that I was holding.....

I am going to take a look at that diet this weeked........It sounds interesting.

Hope all is well.  Happy Belated B-day.

Judy

There were tornadoes confirmed just west of us, heading east.   I'd had the same thought, with the path of down trees that cut through the woods.   It's amazing that the bird feeders are still hanging on the pole, but gigantic trees are tipped over (the roots on some of the tipped trees are the size of small trees)

The shingles will have to be replaced..........there are so many missing.   Hubs screwed tarps down to cover the worst places before it got dark.

The window that blew out.........the bedroom is covered in shards of glass and the carpet is soaked.    The carpet in front of the patio door is wet.

Most of the damage is to trees...........we lost a lot of huge trees...........and big chunks out of the ones on the lawn (we planted those ~30 years ago).    We will never see those re-grown..........we will either be dead or moved into something smaller.

It's just so un-nerving!   I just sat and cried when I got home last night..........and cried on the drive into work............and cried at work!   It's going to be soooooooo much work to clean-up and repair

Then, this morning, someone sent me this in part of an email:

When a need arises in my life,
I have to trust God to supply
according to HIS riches.
I have learned most of the time
I don't need half of what I think I do.
He has never let me down.
Since I learned that 'Secret', I am happy

:sun: God is Good! :sun:  We still have a house standing.........we are both OK, not hurt or injured.......our kitties are all OK, even the outside one (she spooks very easily now).

But, we will get through it, and eventually everything will be fixed or repaired that can be.   I know that, because He promises ME in the Bible, that He will never give us more than we can handle..........that He will be by our side as we go through it..........and I've found in life, that those are the times that I've grown as a person, and as a Christian.

It will be OK!

Pat, I'm so sorry to hear about your damage.  Tornadoes are so spooky!  We have a lot of them here.  It's so strange to see a whole tree roots and all laying on the ground.

I'm so thankful you and your family are OK!

Thanks, Michelle, Beth and Zen

We seem to have our share of tornadoes in MN too, but we've been so blessed to have never been hit before.   They've come close............

We sure were spooked at 4:00 a.m. this morning, when another storm rolled through.  Today is suppose to be rough weather too.   Will be so glad to see the 70's tomorrow!  And calmer weather :sun:

Well, I'm off to another office to do some book work and will be back here Monday morning.  "See" you all then!

Hi  Judy, Suenos and Mol    We got our electricity back on Friday night..........what a relief!   It was mid-90's and very high humidity.........I wasn't looking forward to a night without my air-conditioning.   Besides another round of storms moved in.......tornadoes about 1.5 hrs west of here.   Thank goodness, by the time it got to us, it had weakened a bit to severe thunderstorms.   Man, I get nervous now at the high winds

I am so tired and my back aches so bad.   I was picking up shingles this afternoon, until about 6:30........at that point my back hurt so bad I knew I'd never straighten up again, if I bent over one more time!

This morning I tackled the bedroom with the broken window :dizzy:   Yikes!   After picking up the thousands of shards of glass........I vaccuumed with the shop vac, then with my house vac about 4 more times.   And every time I did it, I could hear the glass hitting the inside of the vac.   It's still in the carpet everywhere!

You know what else I found?   The waste basket was sitting under the window, so you'd think the water would have been blown over it...........there was  1.5 inches in the waste basket! :shock:   So, you can imagine how wet the carpet was!   I've asked the hubs to rip it out tomorrow, when our son stops in.   I don't want mold or shards of glass in there.........it's where the munchkins sleep when they stay over.

Today is an UD..........and I'm not tracking calories.   I figured I didn't have the time, for one thing, and I'm just too tired.   I had an EAS protein shake, lf english muffin w/p butter for breakfast...........lunch was a salad of romaine and a lot of other veggies and lf ranch drsg, pita w/ hummus.........snacks were baked chips w/ diet iced tea, and later on some whole grain crackers w/hummus...........pizza is supper.

Saturday, July 12th was weigh in...................

Started JUDDD on 6/16/08     SW: 196 lbs.

After 1 week:  190.6 lbs

After 2 weeks:  189.6 lbs

After 3 weeks: 7/5/08:  187.4 lbs.

After 4 weeks 7/12/08:  186.4 lbs

So, I am going to go pick up our pizza.........kick off my shoes...........ice my back........and get rested up to pick up more shingles and branches tomorrow............after I go to church to praise God and give Him thanks for sparing us so much.    I've seen some of the neighbors..............and we were indeed blessed.

Tuesday, July 15 (Pay Day!)........today is an UD (and sometime today I am going to have a piece of my birthday cake, that is in the freezer at work.....they ordered the whipped frosting that I love, and I never got a piece because I missed the party to put tarps on our roof, after the storm plowed through)

BREAKFAST:  2 lt. english muffins, Egg Beaters X2, 1 sl 2% cheese, lt spread (360)

SNACK:  Kashi Honey Almond Flax granola bar (140)

LUNCH:  Salad....romaine (15), broccoli slaw (8), onion (1), celery (3), snap peas (13), walnuts (67),  lt ranch (80)  McD's vanilla cone (150)

DESSERT:  BIRTHDAY CAKE! :birthday_cake:   I have no idea how many calories, but it was delicious!  :yum:

SNACK: Fiber One yogurt (80)

SNACK: (while mowing lawn in 90 degree temps!) 1 sl. 100% whole wheat bread (75), 1 Tbsp. red pepper hummus (25)

DINNER:  1.5 serv. 100% whole wheat spaghetti noodles (315), 1.5 serv. organic tomato & basil spaghetti sauce (135), 28 gr. 2% shredded mozz. cheese (70)

RUNNING TOTAL:  1547 calories plus cake :birthday_cake:

:shooting_star: Exercise:  stretches, crunches before work....oh yeah, my Leg Magic too.   I forget to write that down.   I try to do it twice a day.   I am up to 30 reps on each of 3 different moves     I didn't walk  today.........it was 90's and high humidity.   I'd melt for sure!

Instead of walking over my lunch break, I spent a little time looking at new carpet.   We had the wonderful news, on Sunday night, that our daughter and her hubs are flying home from CO for a long weekend in mid-August.   I am so excited!   Unfortunately, it's her old room that has the broken window, soaked carpet and glass shards.   And the other room, that has a queen size bed in it........now has all the furniture from her room.   So, Pat's hotel is closed for a while.............:moon:

I finally took time to open my b-day :birthday_cake: cards from my co-workers.  Being I couldn't go to the party last Thursday........they gave me the stack of cards on Friday.   Just been so busy at home, I forgot them in my bag.   They gave me a good chuckle today though!

:shooting_star: Exercise:  stretches and crunches, Leg Magic.....no walking today, mid-80's and high dewpoints this noon. :sun:

Today is a DD...........and I am doing a Water Fast for it.   According to the research, in the Alternate Day Diet book, the maximum health benefits occurred when fasting every other day.   I couldn't do that........but I am going to throw in an occasional WF day.

Thank you Hisgal for all the nice things you said in my diary!  Do you have to wait to make repairs before the insurance guy shows up?  That must take a lot of patience.

So, what is a water fast?  That doesn't sound very appealing to me!

I tried the Down day once and my blood sugar really dropped and I felt so tired and weak I gave up.  I figure my body is just too out of balance to accomodate that diet.  I'm really glad it is working for you though.  It's great when we find something that works for us.  Losing weight and getting in shape and healthy is so hard, if someone finds something that works for them, I think it's exciting and definately worth a celebration of some kind!

Last night I tried one of those 100 calorie popcorn bags.  It was Kettle flavored and so yummy and satisfying!  I have you to thank for that.  If I hadn't kept reading about it in your diary I wouldn't have tried it. :yum: I got some more today along with some 60 calorie sugar free jello pudding cups.  Those are so yummy and such a calorie bargain!

Well I guess I shouldn't be talking about food in your diary if you're doing a water fast!  Sorry!

Hi Scoobs and Sassykat   I think we should have a waving hand or something.  I'm glad you stopped by.

The WF is pretty much what it sounds like...........and I did one last Friday, and didn't have any problem staying on it.   I drink water, water and more water.........and a cup of coffee.   Today was harder......I think because I had to go to the grocery store    That was a bugger, believe me!   I picked up some 99% fat free chicken broth, and heated up a cup of that when I got home.   The other thing that was hard, was to cut up all this lovely fruit......for a fresh fruit salad, that I'm bringing to work tomorrow.    We are doing a free-will brat feed at our office.   We invited the other realtors in town, and the people working in the adjacent buildings.    We do it to raise funds for the Relay for Life (American Cancer Society).   Last year we used 70 brats and took in over $500.   We've all been affected by cancer in our office, some personally, and some in their families.....so it's one of our projects every year.   Seemed like I was in the kitchen all night tonight!   That made today's WF a bit more of a challenge.:devil::angry:

The hubs continued to work outside, picking up branches and raking up the leaves.   Still a lot to do.....and it was hot today and very humid :sun::sun::sun:

We got a call that the insurance adjustor is coming tomorrow (Thurs).....so the hubs is leaving for work an hour early in the morning, so he can be here when he comes.

Hey Sassykat, good thing I didn't read your post any earlier........I love the Kettlekorn mini bags :yum:   I might have been digging in my food closet.

One thing I don't think I wrote in my diary yet...........about 2 weeks after I started JUDDDD, I stopped taking my allergy meds.   And I am doing great!   Ragweed really gets me, so we will see how it goes about the third week in August-end of Sept.   Sure would be great if it actually improved my allergies     The book says that's one of the health benefits that have been reported on JUDDDD.

Can't wait for my UD tomorrow......especially with the brat feed at the office.   There are 5 yummy salads being brought in....my fresh fruit......cabbage salad.........pasta salad.....tuna salad............and a veggie salad.   :yum::yum::yum:

Pat, this may be going straight over my head, but what is a free-will brat feed?  Brat like the sausage?  Brat like a kid?  Sorry.  I may just be dense!  The fruit and salads sound good!

Beth

We invited other offices around.........and it is brats (like with sauerkraut, onions, ketchup, mustard on a big bun), with baked beans, chips and about 7 salads.

Free-will just means that we aren't charging..........there is a basket out for them to contribute to the American Cancer Society.....in exchange for the food.   It's a fund-raiser!

That sounds like an excellant idea!  I love it!  My hubs is on the volunteer fire dept here and they occasionaly do fund raisers, not to mention all the other fund raisers I've helped with.  I really like the idea of just having a container out for donations, during a meal.   Next time that discussion comes up I'm going to suggest it.

I have a friend who helped with Relay For Life for a very long time.  She has two jobs now or she would still be doing it.

I'll be with you today in spirit, while you're munching on delicious salads and Brats!:yum:  What fun!

Sassykat, they were delicious..........and I ate :pig::pig::pig: way too much.   But I couldn't just taste one salad!   I love  salads!   That wouldn't have been too bad, as I only had one brat.....but I've been nibbling on the leftover chips and had a few bars too.   Ouch..........good thing tomorrow is a DD...........I feel kind of yucky now, as I'm not used to that kind of food.

We had a rainy day..........storm warnings out :rain:   We maybe had 45 people come and made a little over $300.   Not bad..........we have 10 people on our Relay for Life team, who all send out letters, requesting donations.   Actually, what most people do is to buy luminaries (paper bags, with sand in the bottom, and a lit candle-we light them after dark)   The luminaries sell for $5 each.........and then we write the name of a cancer survivor or non-survivor (memorial) on the bag.   Some people put the person's picture on the luminary bag..........or encouraging messages.............or memorial messages.   The path I walk on most days for my lunch break, is in the park where the walk is held.   When those bags are lit after dark..........and you walk that path (the teams are to have walkers on the path from 6:00 p.m. Friday until 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning) it is such a moving experience.   This is a relatively small town, (under 20,000) so you recognize many of the names.   My hubs and I always walk the night shift (somewhere in the 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. region) because I love it when the park clears out, except for all the teams (I think there are about 70-75 teams).   It's almost a reverent feeling.   Our office has raised from $4500-$8000 per year, in the years we've been doing it.

Sassykat, we have a brunch after church every year on Palm Sunday.........and the first year, we charged a flat fee for the meal.    The next year, I suggested we do a free-will offering.   We've always done tons more income in donations with free-will.

Judy :rose:  I'd like to melt away the fat and the pounds......not my lungs or brain     I seem to really be affected by those high dewpoints.   I don't know about you, but we started the day with a 68 dewpoint!   Yikes!

Did you see in my post above, that I stopped taking my Zyrtec about 2 weeks into JUDDDD?   I suddenly realized that I'd forgotten to take it, and I was feeling OK.    So, I just didn't take it........and my allergies have been fine.

Hi Pat,

It's been a little while, I needed to read quite a few posts to catch up!  Brats and sauerkraut.  MMMMM that sounds yummy.  Water fast....does not.  Anyway that is so good that you are doing the cancer fundraisers.

And *Congrats* on getting off the allergy meds!

Yes, Mol, the brats & kraut were very good...........so were the baked beans, chips, 7 different salads, 5 kinds of bars and a cherry cheesecake :yum:

However, I ate :chewing::chewing: way too much!   I felt miserable :crying:   Much better today!   I decided to do another water fast........I just couldn't face food, after all I ate yesterday.   Actually it wasn't hard until tonight, when one of my grandkids stayed here for a few hours, and he wanted popcorn :chewing:   That's my weakness.........and I came so close to eating some.  But I held strong.   It's really funny..........I have pretty much no problem with the 500 calorie DD's or the WF days.   It's really made me see that it's a state of mind.   I have it set in my mind what my limits are on those days.....and stick to them, no doubts about it.    Even tonight when I wanted the popcorn SO BADLY, I knew that I wouldn't take even one kernel.

But give myself a day like tomorrow, when I will eat the catered meal at the church's 150th anniversary celebration............and I will probably feel like I should be allowed to eat ALL DAY!

I need a lot of work yet :crying::angry::crying::angry::crying:

Whew!  What a busy weekend!  Saturday, after a little house cleaning, I went out to my flower beds.   The weeds were double to triple the height of the flowers!   I didn't get them weeded the weekend of the 4th, as we were busy.   Then last weekend, we spent picking up branches after the storm, and almost every night after work.   The hubs worked on burning some of the brush we'd picked up.   Soon it was time to leave for our church's 150th anniversary celebration.   We ran into town for some groceries afterwards, as our brother-in-law and his daughter were coming on Sunday to help with clean-up for a while, and we invited them to come for lunch.

That was pretty much our Sunday!   Church first, then clean-up more trees.   I weeded the veggie garden, and then worked on the lawn mowing.   Still lots of that to do......and the area I did on Tuesday night, needs mowing again!   It's never ending!

Well, Saturday morning is my weigh in day...........so here goes:

Started JUDDD on 6/16/08     SW: 196 lbs.

After 1 week:  190.6 lbs

After 2 weeks:  189.6 lbs

After 3 weeks: 7/5/08:  187.4 lbs.

After 4 weeks 7/12/08:  186.4 lbs

After 5 weeks 7/19/08:   183.4 lbs

And it seems so easy!   I have no trouble controlling my eating on the DD....and I don't feel as tempted to overeat the other days.......usually.   There have been a few exceptional days, but I think they included my trigger foods    And the weekends, I have eaten pretty much what I feel like, and I'm still losing!   Add to that, that I've gotten off my allergy medication..........and I wonder what's not to like about this WOE?   Just like any other one, though, it's surely not for everyone.

Scoobs, I love  your positive attitude!

Well, today is a DD...........

9:00 a.m. Meal 1:   EAS protein shake (110)

11:15 a.m. Meal 2:  Dannon yogurt (45)

1:45 p.m. Meal 3:  Progresso soup-2 serv. (120)

6:00 p.m. Meal 4:  8 oz. chicken broth (15)

10:00 p.m.  Meal 5:  1/2 bag butter lettuce (10), 2 Tbsp ff Italian drsg (20), 6 radishes (6)

I wanted to have some popcorn tonight, but it was 9:00 when I got in from mowing, and then I put a batch of hubs' work jeans in the washer, and made our salads for tomorrow's lunch, then took a bath, did some online payments, and now it's 10:45 and too late to make popcorn.   Maybe tomorrow night?

Running Total:   326 calories

:shooting_star::shooting_star: Exercise:  walked 1.3 miles, morning stretches and crunches, Leg Magic (30 reps of each of 3 moves).....that machine is a killer :angry::angry:

Yeah, Scoobs.........I even considered doing my Leg Magic again tonight.   But, it's late and I was bouncing around on the lawn mower for a few hours tonight after work and grocery shopping.   That's hard on my back, and I really walked funny when I walked back down from the shed.

I am much more faithful about doing my exercises.........than I am at posting them:dizzy:   I am trying to get better at posting them, but I still often fail.   Ooooops!

I also have 2 cups of green tea with lemon every morning, and 2 cups of iced coffee with Splenda most afternoons.   I never write that down either.

I am thinking that I see a difference in my legs..........I might do measurements in the morning.   Maybe it's just wishful thinking?   However, the loose work slacks are not a figment of my imagination

We've got 2 weddings to go to in August........and if I don't get off some more pounds and tighten up what I've got, I won't have a dress to wear.   And I absolutely refuse to buy a dress in this large size that I am!

I'm seeing lots of weight loss and that that you are still doing the Leg Magic torture machine!  You're a better woman than I am!

How are things going with the storm cleanup?  Are things getting somewhat back to normal?
