| yup, that one puzzles me too. It's like the bigger we get as a society, the more we idealize, and even insist on extreme smallness from celebrities.....I was so annoyed at the big deal everybody made when Jessica Simpson went from the practically (for her genetics & bodytype) impossible to maintain size she'd reduced to for her Dukes of Hazzards role back to a perfectly healthy and attractive normal weight (something like a size 6)...same thing for Jennifer Love Hewitt who got called out for being "fat" when she went from sub-zero to a size 2.

Congrats Nine - you are doing amazing! You've made it to the 160s in a flash!

Yeah for sure! As a nation we are certainly getting larger - vs our celeb's getting smaller. I couldn't believe the public 'outrage' and how much fun was made of Jessica Simpson! That pic of her in fugly jeans as if she was HUGE?? Not! And poor Jennifer Love - how dare she have...gulp...cellulite on her back of her thighs! Shame! Both expressed how hurtful all of that was; especially when they are in reality such a small size to begin with. I can't imagine. I beat myself up enough for feeling fat; I can't imagine being a celeb and dealing with all that.

| I think it's really horrible that young girls have to see that and they idealize something that's so unrealistic. I read recently that a size zero is the same as that of an 8 yr old little girl, now that's gross!

Thanks Scoobs!
Wow I hadn't heard of the Jennifer Love Hewitt thing, I looked it up and in that supposed "fat" picture, she was so teeny tiny! She looked like a very normal healthy person, and a small one at that!
The Jessica Simpson thing is a bit different. She sort of brought that one on herself. She always "sold" her image as the ditzy but hot blond. Than she suddenly want to be seen as the everyday woman, and gets upset when she can't sell it. That being said, she definitely never qualified as fat, but she sure could have used some help with her wardrobe

NC.............you are doing so awesome! You've gotten me wanting to get back on a specific plan, instead of just coasting. Love to read your diary, and see how you are doing!
I especially loved reading about your "date night" story My hubs and I will be married for 35 years at the end of this month. We've had tough times too, and they've definitely brought us closer. We took vows 35 years ago that we meant, and meant to keep. Everyone on the site knows I'm a Christian and trust my Lord for all.........that's been a big part of the glue in our relationship too. I love the hubs more now than ever, and I anticipate loving him more and more every day. He's not perfect, and I'm certainly not perfect.........but we have love and trust and forgiveness........our's and God's. It works!

Pat ~ Happy Anniversary Month! I agree that that the spiritual aspect is so important for a relationship to work. It has been so important in our marriage. I guess it is true what they say, the family that prays together stays together!
Not even having divorce on the table as an option helps as well. You start to learn to work together to get through your problems, and it really forces you to have to grow up! There is no room for selfishness (childishness) in a marriage.
Suenos ~ Thanks! I am pretty excited!!
ThinGirl ~ Yeah, I watched that silly Newlywed show just because I couldn't believe anyone would act that stupid just for attention. Really, why is it that anyone would want to brand themselves that way?

Today's Weight 168.6
Tonight is date night We plan to go for a walk and maybe get coffee then come back here for a couple of blu ray movies.
Tomorrow we have a party to go to (lot's of beer, food, vodka cordial ). So wish me luck with that! The family who is throwing it is very big on fruits, vegetables and organics. So hopefully finding something to eat won't be a problem. Then on Sunday after Church we have the company picnic. This is held every year at the baseball stadium. I know there isn't any food there I will want to eat, so I will probably bring something with me.
I noticed a couple of days ago that my husband was looking pretty fit and chiseled again. So we got out the scale and he weighed himself. He had lost 11 pounds!
Pretty much all he is doing is walking with me 3x a week. He has switched to whole foods as well but his daily calories are still pretty high (man seriously loves to eat). So he is now 5'11" / 157 lbs and cut like a statue, and all he has to do to maintain that is walk 3x a week (he even has a desk job).... hmmm must be nice eh?
Breakfast:
Cinnamon & Sugar Bagel Yummy!
1 whole wheat bagel
10 sprays 0 calorie butter
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
(the actual sugar amount maybe slightly less since I mix the cin & sugar, sprinkle it on, then shake off and discard the excess)
Calories:117
Lunch:
Rice Burrito
1 whole wheat tortilla
1/2 cup rice mixed with
2 tbsp salsa &
1 tbsp ff mozz cheese
Baked at 350 for 20 min
served with
1 tbsp ff sour cream spread on top
1 cup fresh, slightly frozen sliced peaches served on the side
Calories: 295

Men. Sigh. That is just wrong. Mine's pants were practically falling off him the other night, he kept pulling up at 'em - and I just can't figure it out. That never just 'happens' to me. Like outta the blue, no work involved. It's just not fair. Insert tantrum here.
Have a wonderful date night!

This weekend was crazy! Date night was a blast as usual. Saturday was crazy fun and Sunday was super busy as well.
On Sunday we went to Church, then to a friends house for a potluck, then the company picnic and baseball game, and then we went for our walk! I was so exhausted on Monday but there was so much to do. Cleaning, grocery shopping, phone calls, etc... .
Did great with food and exercise. But sleep and water not so much. And I really felt it! I have to take my son to get his haircut in a few minutes, but I hope to find time to give more details later today. Just wanted to stop in and give a quick update.

Ok, my son's soccer practice ran late so that means I had to change his hair appointment to 2:30. So I have a few minutes to spare.
ThinGirl~ Rest would have been nice! And I really suffer when I am dehydrated!
On Friday night I didn't get to bed till 4 am (told ya it was a fun date night ) I was up at 8 am in the morning because I had to get ready for the gym. I went and did a full gym workout on only 4 hours of sleep
When I got home we got ready to go to the party. I was already pretty tired. We went and there were about 300 people there! There was a huge barn set up and a live band. I ate a little bit, but since I had eaten before I left to be safe, I didn't eat much. And like ThinGirl said, it can be pretty hard to be in a social environment with food, and not eat. And there was a ton of food. There was microbrew beer on tap but I don't drink beer. There was also lemonade but I didn't want to drink the sugar. The water hadn't been set out, an understandable oversight considering how big the party was. But I was pretty dehydrated! I should have brought some bottled water with me (the place was about an hour from where we live) but I forgot. The water did get put out later in the evening but so did the red wine! So I had quite a bit of wine and everything was good
We got home pretty late and I was pretty wiped out, I went straight to bed. We got up for Church at 6:00 am. We went there, then to our friend's house for breakfast. Not much time to drink water. Then we went to the picnic where I only had a 1 oz bag of nuts to munch on. My husband drank the free beer and the kids drank the free soda but that didn't help me much. It was also very hot during the baseball game. We got home kind of late but I ate something, drank a glass of water, then we went for our walk. I went to bed shortly after that.
Last night I actually got a decent amount of sleep, but I am still pretty tired.
I also got my standard process supplements. I order them through a friend. I am now taking Folic Acid, Iodine and Drenamin. I had a pretty serious bloating reaction to the Iodine (supposedly that means it was low) so I will only be taking it once a week for awhile. I also started eating 2 Brazil Nuts a day for my Selenium.

Today my oldest son is taking team pictures for soccer, and my youngest son has his first soccer practice of the season. My youngest son's main sport is basketball, but he loves being active so hopefully this will help him burn up some energy. My husband loves to watch him drive the ball down field, he is pretty much unstoppable, just like he is at home
I am glad today is a rest day because I think I pulled something in my lower back last night. Nothing too serious but probably could use a break. Starting next week we are switching my rest day to Monday and will walk on Wednesdays. As it is my husband has 3 days in a row of no exercise. This will help spread it out a bit more. Also Mondays are always super busy, so being able to rest in the evenings will be nice.
I really think the supplements I started taking are helping with mental clarity. Not sure which one it is though. Possibly the Iodine if I was actually low on it, and it seems like I may have been. I was skeptical of the Drenamin at first but it really does perk me up more then coffee. I also realize that when I am taking it I don't get caffeine headaches. Definitaly will continue taking it. I am currently checking into possibly taking Creatine as well.

| I noticed a lot of added benefits when I started on iodine, mental clarity being one of them, but a sluggish thyroid causes mental fog, and iodine supports thyroid function. I also notice that taking all my supplements helps my weight loss, it's almost like my body knows its getting adequate nutrition and is releasing more fat.

ThinGirl~ What all supplements have you had success with? I am really trying to get a good regimen set up. I like Standard Process supplements because they are natural. It seems like the stuff I buy at the stores make me very nauseous, maybe because of the fillers?

Oh I love iodine! I am working on getting the balance just right in the amount of iodine and the amount of selenium. I notice if it's off I have cold hands and hair falling out, but if I get it just right, then my hands are nice and warm and I feel much better.
How much are you guys taking?
I was taking 1/2 tablet Iodoral (6.25 mg iodine) and 250 mcg selenium a day, but I had a lot of hair falling out, even though my hands were warm.
Today I am trying Iosol with one drop in a bit of water = 1.8 mg iodine and a multi vitamin has 100 mcg selenium in it.
I also take magnesium and krill oil. One supplement that seems to make a big difference with mental clarity and memory is Schisandra berry. It helps the adrenal glands and also helps thyroid function. I usually empty out half of the capsule because I am kind of sensitive to anything I take and I notice I do really well with that dose. Schisandra berry is also good for your skin and hair.

I am taking 1 Prolamine Iodine tablet per week. It has 3 mg of Iodine. For Selenium I am eating 2 Brazil nuts a day. That equals about 109.20 mcg of Selenium daily.
Where do you get the Schisandra berry? I do need to look into getting more magnesium.

New Goals:
I am going to try to keep my calories between 1325-1400. This is an increase to try to better fuel my workouts and muscle growth. I am also going to try to eat 3 cups of raw spinach a day. The raw spinach didn't seem to trigger my hunger response like the cooked spinach did. 3 cups a day will provide me with a whole bunch of nutrients.

I haven't tried the liquid Schizandra berry, (I've seen it spelled both ways with an S and with a Z - Schizandra or Schisandra) but Hisgal says it tastes positively evil. I do like my capsules. I get it from Swansonvitamins.com, but I also found it at the Vitamin Cottage when we went to Pueblo.
This is the kind I take:
http://www.swansonvitamins.com/NW165/ItemDetail?n=0
After looking up your suggestion of the Drenamin, I found a similar product or products I think I will try. It's Natural Sources Raw Adrenal. It has very good excellent customer reviews and is only $6.99 on Amazon.
And Natural Sources also has Raw Thyroid that again has very good customer reviews.
I think I will try both of those - at separate times of course.
Thank you for the suggestion NineChoirs. Getting healthy is such a long road sometimes it seems.

Nine, I think you are right to add a few calories. Awhile back I waS having a hard time pushing through my workout and my trainer said it was becuase I was not eating enough. I increased my calories about 100 per day and it really did make a difference.

Sassy~ Thanks for that link, I am going to check to see if I can find it in my health food store to save on shipping, but if not I will order from there. Thanks for the recommendation
Hiker~ Yeah, I feel it is the right time for a calorie increase. But it is still a hard thing to do. I often find myself trying to eat alot of food in the evening just to meet my goal as it is. But lately I have been exhausted and I am pretty sure it is because I am not eating enough. I try to listen to the signals that my body sends, and this one is definitely saying eat more! Since I have not been feeling hungry it would be an easy one to miss.

Today's Weight 167.4 (Guess the calorie increase worked )
Tonight we are going to a baseball game which means I am going to the gym this morning. My youngest son has soccer practice this afternoon, and my daughter is going to a birthday lunch and miniature golf with her best friend (her friend's b-day party happened while my daughter was with her grandparents) so I should be pretty busy today. But I was very happy with the scale this morning! I thought it might take a few days for the calorie increase to work but it worked right away. I guess that's a sign that my body needed it!
Breakfast: (made this as hot cereal)

3/4 cup sliced peaches

NC, it's good that you realize what your body is telling you.
I've seen the discussion on here many times...........someone isn't dropping weight, or stalls out, but won't accept that it's because they are eating too few calories. Others, increase the calories a bit, and whooo hoooo............the scale drops again. Let us know if you see the difference in your workouts.
The one thing that worries me a bit with BC, is the calorie count. Of course, I don't count the calories since I've been on it, but it's got to be on the low end with all those fruits, veggies, and lean meats. That's why I've been trying to work the nuts in each day, and a bit of cheese........as long as it's unprocessed cheese.
I know what you mean about having trouble getting all the food in..........I feel full so much of the day! But remember it's because you are eating high density, high nutrient foods..........not the processed junk.
I do love my breads, but don't miss them as much as I thought I would have.
I do take the liquid Schicandra berry liquid drops. They do taste evil, I think I likened them to used motor oil. But, I found if I use a bit more water, it isn't quite as bad. And it's only a swallow or two. The bottle says 2-5 times a day, 30-40 drops per dose. I started out taking it several times a day, at 30 drops. I do like the drops though, just because my other supplements are capsules or tablets. I get kinda tired of swallowing all the tabs........and trying to space them out, without forgetting to take them. I started keeping the Schisandra on my desk and just taking it about mid-morning, about 35-40 drops. I also think it keeps my appetite under control, helps with the night sweats........my allergies seemed better on the more frequent doses. I should really go back to that, but haven't yet in my crazy busy world. When I bought my second bottle, I divided it up into the other bottle, and keep one at work and one at home.
I take 1 Iodoral, and one selenium (250), a multi, cal/mag, fish oil, glucosamine/chondroitin, milk thistle, and an herbal combination hormone supplement (peri-menopause symptoms). I used to do the B12 too, on my non-meat days.
Sure enjoy having you on the forum!

Pat~ Yeah I am pretty good about understanding what my body is trying to tell me, the problem is I am not always so good at listening The calorie increase thing is tricky because, your right, the foods I am eating are much more filling. It always seems strange to eat even when you are not hungry in order to lose weight. I think that is why people are so resistant to it. Thanks for listing your supplements, I am going to look into them. Losing weight can be a bit traumatic for the body, I want to make sure I stay healthy.
My workout today went well. I was a bit worried that because it was earlier then my usual workout time that it would be tougher. But everything went smoothly. I am also less exhausted. The last few workouts have left me feeling like all I want to do is fall into bed, this time I feel much more energetic. So another win for the extra calories

Yesterday's Update 8/12/10:
Last night was very eventful. We went to the baseball game as planned. We had so much fun! At first it was very hot (we are going through a heat wave here). But once the sun started going down the weather was perfect. I brought plenty of bottled water this time and stayed very hydrated. While the family munched on peanuts and sunflower seeds I munched on baby carrots. There was a mascot there who travels around to different games in different cities. He only came once this year and last night was the night. He brings a cast of characters with him and puts on shows during the game. He is very funny and the kids just love him.
The game itself was also awesome. We were down two runs in the bottom of the 9th 2 outs and two strikes, bases loaded. We got a guy in and then were only down one. Guy comes up to the bat, we have guys on third and second. Guy at the bat line drives the ball, the outfielder dives and misses it and we get 2 guys in, win!! Everyone went crazy. It was also $1 beer night so the crowd was really into it, if you know what I mean
I wanted to get a Mike's Lemonade during the game. But my husband suggested I get a "Big Slugger Margarita" instead because it was something I never tried before. So I got one and it was way too sweet but I finished, only to come home and find out it was probably at least 400 Calories. It is a good thing I had calories to spare! I am pretty sure I will be avoiding that one in the future.
There were other bright spots about the game as well. I was able to fit into a pair of size 12 jean capries that I had! In fact they were a bit loose. My calves looked great in them I was also able to wear a cute tank top unselfconsciously which was great because of the hot weather. My youngest son caught a free t-shirt that was thrown out to the crowd and my daughter caught a stuffed ball. There were fireworks afterward which are always fun to watch, especially after a win. All in all it was a near perfect family night.
I say "near perfect" because not long after we got home, my youngest son started complaining about a stomachache. We told him he could sleep on the couch. In the middle of the night he came to our room and said it was hurting really bad. We were worried it might be his appendix. So my husband took him to Medpoint (it is really nice, we have a 24 hour hr one less than a mile away). The Doctor said it wasn't his appendix, but either heat related or a stomach bug of some sort (he started vomiting at the Medpoint). He had spent 2 hours at soccer practice in 97 degree heat and the heat at the baseball game might have aggravated it. So he said rest, plenty of fluids, and take today off from practice. So thankfully it wasn't serious and he already feels better today.

My husband suggested that the big overnight drop in weight may have been caused by alcohol related dehydration. I did drink a ton of water yesterday but it is still possible. So I am prepared for a possible slight increase tomorrow. Guess I just have to wait and see.

Last night was a fun date night! We went for our walk then came home
and watched "Date Night" which was actually a pretty cute movie.
I made Fish Tacos for dinner, which were very good. My husband made himself an amaretto sour and was kind enough not to offer me one (I sort of gave him a hard time about the margarita ). So I dodged a bullet there!

After Church I took my daughter shopping for a new bathing suit. I also went to get my haircut. Then we took the kids to the beach with friends and spent the rest of the day there. I enjoyed a Mike's Harder Lemonade and we had very healthy tacos. Fresh corn tortillas with a bit of skirt beef and fresh homemade from scratch salsa. Got plenty of exercise with alot of sand walking (including going up and down a steep hill of sand to get to the water) and swimming against some pretty heavy wave action. It was a great day.

Today's Weigh In (Official) 164.2 Weekly Loss -4.2 Total Loss -24.6
So it seems like every now and then my body likes to drop 4 pounds. I am not going to complain, especially when the catalyst for this week's weight loss was an increase in my daily calories!
Today is also the day I take my Iodine tablet. Hopefully there won't be as much bloating and cramping as last time.
Breakfast:
1/2 Cup Grape Nuts
1/2 Cup Milk
1 Orange

Thanks Hiker, it was a lot of fun!
When I started this I knew that I didn't want to "diet" but rather change the way I ate and viewed food. I wanted to eat balanced healthy meals. And I wanted to still be able to enjoy what I ate. Switching to whole foods was the obvious move. The food is still very good, there is plenty of variety and choices. It is lower in calories so you can eat more of it and higher in nutrients and more filling so you can also eat less. Keeping track of my foods and calories is helping me learn portion control. It is also ensuring I get enough to eat. I am getting pretty good at it. The idea is eventually to make it second nature. A couple of times I have added up my calories at the end of the day and both times I hit my goal perfectly.
Since I have lost weight before, this time my focus is on creating a lifestyle I can maintain for the rest of my life. When I go to a party I want to be able to enjoy a drink and some food with friends. If the only food being offered is very unhealthy or heavily processed, I will just bring my own or eat when I get home. Otherwise I will just try to make smart choices. If I want to make this permanent I have to be able to have fun and be healthy at the same time. To me the whole point of losing weight and being healthy is so that I can more fully enjoy my life and my family. If it is making me miserable, then it becomes pointless, not to mention it will most likely fail.

Today's Weight: 164.6
So yesterday was the day I took my Iodine. I did bloat up again, but there wasn't the cramping like last time. I think that means my body is regulating it better. My husband is pretty concerned about me taking it. So hopefully I will stop bloating when I take it. It is a visible bloating, my stomach becomes round and hard like there is a basketball or baby bump there. If it happens again next week I might try cutting it in half and only taking half of it a week.
Tonight I am going to Panera bread with a friend for dinner & coffee. My youngest son is at soccer practice right now. I have to leave to get him in 15 minutes. Then my oldest son has an away game tonight, I have to drop him off to get on the bus at 4pm. I have to bring home my youngest eat lunch quickly, then go to the gym. I have to workout, shower, change then run home to pick up my oldest son and drop him off. Then I have to go pick up my husband from work and rush home in time for my friend to pick me up. Should be a very busy day!

Hiker~ I love their chicken noodle soup & apple combo! The fact that all of their food can be made at home is a huge plus for me. I also enjoy their coffee. I do wish their food wasn't so high in sodium though.
Pat~ It will be great when the kids are old enough to drive me around! I really don't like driving.

Today's Weight: 165.6
Not surprised at the increase in weight. The Panera chicken soup is low in calories but packs almost 1500 grams of sodium. Plus my ttom is due in two days and I am really feeling very bloated. But I did have great time last night so it was worth it
I did buy some granola from Panera last night. It is the kind they use in their parfaits but if you ask, they will sell it separately. I had it for breakfast, using my own yogurt and strawberries, and it was very yummy.
