Hi All!

It's been a year since I first started this weight loss plan.  I found it by mistake but liked what I saw and started that very day.  From November through April I lost 27 lbs (with cheating over the holidays).  At that point I probably could've stood to lose about 5-8 more pounds but lost my ambition.

Since then, I've been on my own LOOSELY following the plan and have gained back a few pounds but am still down give or take a few pounds.  I think the most important thing to keep doing, even if you don't follow the plan, is to exercise and drink the water.  I found that when I stopped doing those things, the weight crept back on.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience and to let the skeptics know that you can keep the weight off you lose on this plan for the long term.

I completely agree.  I have been on it for 15 months off and on and I am 47lbs lighter with what I have learned than I was.  I am not sick of any food that is on the diet because I alternate and keep preparation "fresh".  I also take breaks and have my fill.  I have a bunch of junk that we have bought but never eat because we don't want to have to lose it (like cupcakes from my daughter's birthday 10 days ago that we have not touched and will likely throw out or a chocolate muffin that my wife took three weeks ago (sealed, of course) that looked SO good, but she just doesn't want.)

Anyway, my starting weight in September of 2005 was 257lbs and I am now at 210lbs.  I have moved my goal from 230, to 220, to 190 after seeing what I look like at each step and realizing my potential.  I may even go down, but I will be glad to see 200 (much more, 190 ) and will make a decision then.

Congratulations Shamrock and I hope others keep it off too!

Dobie.

Hi, I started FL4I on 9th January and I'm now onto my fourth cycle.  I have been managing the diet pretty well, I've cheated here and there but have managed to lose 1 stone (14lbs) so far and want to lose about the same again.  The problem I'm having is that over the 3 days off I have been putting a few pounds back on.  I've lost them again within the first 5 days of the next cycle but I want to try to stop the pounds going back on in the first place.  Does anyone have any tips as to what I could do?  It also makes me concerned as to what will happen when I come off the diet.  Any advice would be appreciated.

I have come to believe that the weight gain is due to eating foods that allow your body to retain water such as sugar, simple carbs, and salt.  I don't think there is a way to avoid this fluctuation in the long run.  This diet is devoid of the "toxic" foods we should not be eating and when you add them back in, you are bound to hold in some water.  However, it may be more than this.

What I recommend is figuring out how you are going to eat for your maintenance and move toward that the closer you get.  Keep eating four (or five, or even six) meals a day and try to not eat too few calories (http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_metabolism.html).

Counting calories is not a lifestyle...it is an education toward a means.  Learn what you need to eat to maintain and you won't have to follow these diet plans for the rest of your life.  You will eat these foods and hopefully keep on healthy meals, but you will have more flexibility as you maintain for life.

Hi sweedy!  The water keeps me filled up so much that I don't seem to have room for much in the way of "other" drinks (except wine... hehehe).  But I do love tea, and Oolong and green teas are good for aiding in weight loss, so I do drink a cup or two of tea almost every day.  I drink them hot as it is winter time, but you can always brew and then ice them, too.  The only drinks allowed are under 10 calories, and diet sodas are so bad for you, I would not recommend them.  Juices are not good for weight loss, and too many calories anyways.  What about lemonade sweetened with Stevia, which is a natural sweetener so you don't get the "bad" stuff?  Maybe ask this question in the general discussion forum and there might be more ideas for you.   I am sure everyone would like to hear from you again, anyways!

Yes me again!  This is also what I'm wondering, once you've accomplished your weight loss goal, I wouldn't think that you'd have to keep eating as per the actual menus?  I can see where the eating more frequent meals comes into play, but what about the types of foods that you'd be eating?  IE; potatoes, breaded meats etc??  Not talking junk food, just regular daily meals.

Thanks

Tink - After you reach your goal you don't only eat what is on the FL4I list of foods.  What we learn from this diet are principles that we can take with us, and apply them to the way we eat from now on.  When you eat, you still only eat until you are satisfied.  If you do that in the future, you can keep control of adding extra calories/fat by overeating and gaining.  I also try to eat more than 3 meals (usually 4) and space them apart, and hardly ever snack in between meals now.  I think that is a very big thing, as you can add in so many extra calories and fat by snacking in between meals.  You start being conscious of everything you put in your mouth, without being obssessive about it, hopefully!  You can add items like potatoes, rice, bread, etc., but you learn that you do so in moderation.  I very rarely have anything fried or breaded anymore.  I choose healthier options when I eat now.  Sure, I may have something like coconut shrimp (which is breaded and deep fried) or flautas or something similar, only now I only have it only on ocassion, not often at all.  It just is not worth it to me to eat that type of food as a normal staple in my diet.  When I have bread, I only choose whole grains now.  Still, I don't eat bread that often anymore.  If I have rice, I choose whole grain brown rice instead of white rice.  I don't eat the refined, processed, white foods anymore.  That has made a BIG difference in helping me to maintain.  And I drink mostly water and tea pretty much all the time... no juices or sodas in my diet.  That is a miracle for me as I rarely drank water before I started FL4I.  I just don't want to add the extra calories which results in weight gain.  If you don't drink enough water, your body stores more fat.  The more you drink, the less fat is stored.  Water helps keep the weight off, so that is why I choose water instead now.  Things like that... you will get the hang of it and understand.  Of course, during that "time of the month" (TOM), most of us women have a hard time with the chocolate still, but that is our hormones controlling our thoughts, and it is only once a month! I hope that helps answer your question.

I've been doing this diet off and on for a year and 4 months. I have finally reached my goal (60 lbs!) with this last cycle. When I completed the cycle, I found myself in the world of "Maintenance." I've never been here before, but I surely have done a lot of research about healthy eating. So off I went, confident that I could keep the weight off now that I have all of this information and determination. The result? I've gained 6 pounds! This is with continued water drinking, exercise, and 4 meals per day. That's actually about typical for "Choice Days" gain for me.
So here is my question -- for those of you who have successfully lost and kept off your weight, how far below your goal weight did you go so that you would taper off at your goal weight?
Or do you keep going back on FL4I? Of course the goal is not to have to go back on it.

Michellenka - I officially ended the diet Oct. 31, 2008 but have done a couple or maybe even 3 full cycles since then (almost a year later), and sometimes I did a few days of a cycle if I felt I was gaining.  For the most part I have kept it off.  I bounce back and forth with a couple of pounds... I go up and then down.  But I think there are a lot of factors involved... age, body, meds, etc. which determine the gains, besides just our choice of foods.  But foods DO play a big part.  When I eat carbs like sushi (the white rice which is really not good at all) bread, tortilla chips and Mexican food, and any white, refined stuff, to name a few, I gain.  Some of it is temporary, but sometimes a couple lbs. stick around after those types of meals. So some of us keep this diet as a safety net, as it works and we know we won't ever get back to that unhealthy weight we once were at.  I know if I gain more than 3 lbs, I am freaking out already.   You may want to introduce yourself in the FL4I general discussion thread where there are a lot more people. That way you get more answers than just mine.  But besides all that, WOW... that is wonderful that you lost 60 lbs. CONGRATULATIONS!  As a matter of fact, I would really like you to tell your story in the GD thread as this is VERY encouraging for the new members.  So if you don't mind...  see you over there!!
