Hello all!  New to this diet.  I am on day 8.  tomorrow is my veggie day.  I need to lose 10 pounds. that is my goal with this diet.  I did weight watchers for a while and had much success.  I just want to try something new.  I think this is wonderful because I don't have constant sugar cravings I am used to having when I eat them in moderation.  After 5 days, those cravings went away.  I can honestly say that I can refuse food more easily when I am not hungry, something I have always struggled with.

The main reason I am writing is to ask a few questions and hope someone may have an answer for me.  On any given day, can I substitute one protein for another?  Like if one of my meals for the day is halibut and walnuts, can I substitute chicken for the fish even though it is not incorporated into any of my other meals for the day?  Has anyone tried this and been successful?

Also, How is this diet different from Atkins?  I feel I am eating a loooot of meat, eggs and cheese!  It's okay, but I am a huge vegetable person.

Thanks in advance if anyone reads my post.

hi Brandie, I have subbed with no problems.  It is my thinking that its the type of food ie car/protein that is the key, not so much what the actually food item is.

I say give it a try and see what it does for you.  NO matter what you have to remember that everyone is different and food affects us all differently.  You have to find out what works for you specifically.

Hope this helps,
Jayelle

I agree and have substituted approved protein for approved protein and same with carbs without seeing a problem.  The only danger (though you will find you need to occasionally do it) is unapproved foods that you will want to substitute.

For example, to take my wife out for Mothers day, we substitued roast beef and shrimp for steak and shrimp and we ate the salad (veggies only).  We had to pick lean beef, but I think it worked out.

Hi Brandie,

I subbed my eggs out during the latter part of my first 11 days.  It didn't seem to affect anything at all.

I lost 15 lbs the first three cycles, but during the fourth, I only had 2 lbs loss, and now I'm on day 4 of the fifth cycle, which is a fruit and veggie day, and the scale hasn't budged since the end of the three day cheat.

I feel like I'm starting to lose this battle. How can I jump this plateau and keep from giving up?

Hi Yedda.  I know how you feel about having hit a plateau.  I seem to have done the same.  I am attempting a newer motified way of eating that allows to eat 5 times day and its more predetermined portions.

I have to try to bust through this and get the progression started again.

Maybe you can be more careful of your portions and add a small bit of 'extra' walking or other exercise to your daily plan.  Are you doing the walking?  If so how much each day? Are you getting your heart rate up enough to get the full benefits from it?

These are just a couple of things to watch.  Also, I don't know what version you are following (and I know that IPD is not calorie based) but maybe you can select more foods that are not as calorie laden.  NO matter how we trick our systems (ie. protein/carb rotation) weight loss is a result of more calories expended than consumed.

Don't give up on losing.  Try to bust through this plateau and come out on the lighter side.:D

Half hour walk to work, passing everyone else on the sidewalk.

Full day at work siting at a 72 inch wide loom, continuously moving my arms and feet to run the loom, which can work up quite a sweat. (Basically bending, stretching, lifting, pulling - all day)

Half hour walk home, again very speedy.

I've always been a fast walker, though, and can walk for hours with the only sign that I need to stop being my sore feet, so maybe I need to work harder to raise my heart rate to the right level.

In any case, I'm pretty sure I burn more calories than I eat.

I'm not eating too much at each meal. I know what it feels like to be totally full, and this ain't it, and I like to eat slowly, to give myself time to know if I'm still hungry or not.

I drink about 100 oz of water every day, and change my food choices each cycle. (still doing one food each meal, although I did manage to get the login to the new diet)

I try to keep up the water during the three day break, and eat some healthy, full meals, as well a treat or two like pizza, or a cinnabon.  I can usually lose the cheat weight in the first day back, but then I'm at a stand still.

Hi again Yedda.  It certainly sounds like you are doing all the right things to lose weight.:thumbsup::thumbsup:  Way to go!! The only other thing that comes to mind is how close are you to your 'ideal weight'?  I have read that it is tougher to lose as you get closer to your ideal body weight.  Could that be a contributor in your recent slow progress?

I think that is what is plaguing my losses.  The last ten pounds just seem to want to stick around when the others were so willing to go.:P  I am happy to have lost the weight that I have lost but am ever more eager to get rid of the rest.

How much weight do you want to lose?  How close are you to your goal?

My weight right now is around 197.  My medicaly recomended ideal weight is 135 - 175 lbs. I'd love to get to 150 eventually. I'm 5 foot 11, 26yrs in October.

Right now my goal is 180, so I'm about half way there from my start weight of 214. Maybe I've got a stress induced stuborn fat problem, or something. I'm lucky enough to have always carried my extra pounds rather well, generally just getting curvier in the naturally curvy areas.

You are tall!!!  I am 5'9"  and aiming for 145.  I haven't been able to get closer than 151 lately.  I was 145 about 4 years ago, but much more toned than I am now as I weight trained 4 times a week in addition to cardio 5-6 times a week.  I had no problem eating whatever then. Not now. :nono:  I don't have the time to devote to that level of exercise these days so I have relied on dietary changes for my once 185 lb weight problem.

As I have said I am around 151 now (depending on the day) and would like to get to 145, and achieve more tone.  I started to incorporate a small bit of toning exercises to my routine but have recently had a small set back.  A nasty fall has me with a limp and slightly out of commission for  a few days.

My goal was to be back @ 145 and in my size 8s before one of my Best friend's wedding.  July 29th.    I still think I'll make it!

7-8 lbs to go.  I can do that!

I was 150 at the same height I am now, 7 years ago. I miss being a teenager! I miss being a size 8!

I guess it took me 7 years to put on 65 lbs. That's 9lbs a year.  I'm losing faster than it took to put on the weight, at least.

Somehow it seems that the longer you've had the fat, the more it wants to stick around.

 Hi there,

Just wondering how many of you out there have tried the new version and if you find the plan works as well.

If there are people out there on the plan and would like to share there experience, I would love to hear back from you:cool:

I start the plan on June 19th and will be posting as I go along.

Hi.  I am new to the forum.

I tried this diet last year and it did work, but was unable to stay on it for a long time.

Anyway, I am trying it again.  More so because I need to lose some quick weight for my upcoming trip to Mexico.

A few questions -

1.  Can you eat Salmon under the "fish fillet" category?  In the past, I only used to eat Tilopia, but I love Salmon now and I know it is one of the fattier fish.

2.  The bun debate - can you eat a bun with the hot dog and/or hamburger?  If Hot Dog was on my menu, I usually ate 1 with a bun and then 1 or 2 more w/o.

3.  F/V day - can you eat potatoes with the veggies?  I don't think so but wanted to know what other do.

Any answers appreciated.  :)

Hello,

I ate salmon and it didn't hurt my weight loss at all.

You can definitely eat the bun with the hamburger or hotdog.  But only one bun - I know people who've put 2 hotdogs on their bun and been ok, but the ones who snuck in an extra bun paid the price.

I use potatoes on my fruit/vege day although I don't think you're supposed to.  I just mash them with a little fat free or 1% milk, no butter.  Then I put some stir fried (in a non-stick pan with a little olive oil) red and green pepper and onions on top.  I eat this with peas and it's very good.

I'm averaging 8 pounds for every 11 days so I must be doing something right

Thanks for the info.  I'm only on day 2 of my 1st round (this year).   I need to lose about 30, but will settle for 20.  And I will be thrilled if I can lose 12 by July 6th when I leave for vacation.

Thumper-- and anyone else-- what did you substitute for the "Omelette" meal? My notes say I can have veggies and meats in the omelette, but I'm having guests for dinner that night, and I need to eat something a little more group friendly. Any ideas on an approved sub? Would meat and veggies work? Or do I need to add a little fat?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

I've got houseguests and we are going out to dinner tonight, i'm really concerned because my only meal left is "Omelette" which can include veggies and meats (my other meals today were fruit and cottage cheese). I know I wont' be able to get anything like an omelette at the restaurant (Though I have my choice of places to go eat). What is a legal substitute? Fish and veggies?

Help!!

Thanks

There are not "approved" subs.  It is us experimenting to see what works.  Sorry to not be more helpful.

What did you end up doing?

I have heard good and bad things about the plan vs. the old.People have said the new plan offers some better foods and combining, but tI have also read that some feel it does not work as well as the old plan.

Oh well ,Im trying the new plan and am very excited about it.

Good luck to you and keep me posted as to how you are doing. Knowing me as well as I do I will weigh in quite often:devil: as I have such a passionate affair with my scale!!!

I am also planning on mountain biking about 15k at least 3 nites a week.

Dobie-

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I realize there are no "approved substitutions" -- I guess I meant "approved" in that they would be foods that are allowed on the diet in general that would be a carb/protein/fat match for the omelet I would be subbing out. Anyway, I ended up ordering a mixed seafood grill-- it was scallops, halibut and shrimp with squash and other veggies in a lemon sauce. So basically a protein and light carb meal. I seemed to have had no ill effects-- that was on Thursday (day 4 of this cycle) and I'm now on day 8 and am down 8 pounds so far! We'll see what that really shakes out to be after the cheat days, of course. Hope everything is going well with you. H

I started the diet yesterday.  I followed it exactly and drank 101 oz of water.  I am very excited about this.  My problem is that I leave for a family reunion on Friday which is only day 5.  We won't come back until day day 10.  There is no way I will be able to follow the diet.  We will also be going to Sea World and celebrating my baby's  first birthday.  My question is do I try to follow it when I can, stop completely and start over when I return, WHAT do I do?  Help please.

I found the diet a week or so ago and I was going away to the lake for 4 days so I opted to wait for yesterday to start, and just a thought but its better to follow a program to the tee  than start and stop. try to watch yourself over the next week, and make some healthy choices and when you are back to your dailey routine start theIPD clean.

Good luck in what ever choice you make:D

summer is always hard for me to have time for things like this.  I teach, so during the summer I visit all those I can't during the year.  I don't know if I will be home for 11 consecutive days.  I didn't want to keep putting off so I guess we will see how it works.  I figure it is better to do something instead of nothing.

Good luck to you too.  Day 2 and I am still motivated.  I just got back from working out.  I have reached that point where I have told myself, "enough is enough".  Hopefully I will see some results.  I have about 50 lbs I would like to lose but anything will be exciting!

If you know you're going to be gone during an 11 day cycle, you might try using your cheat days interspersed instead of at the end of 11 days.  I don't know if that will affect your weight loss or not.  After the first cycle for me, I thought I might try to split it up so I would follow 4 days diet, 1 cheat day, 3 diet days, 1 cheat day, 4 diet days, 1 cheat day and see how that might work.

I use montreal chicken seasoning, salt and pepper to taste, and garlic, sprinkled on top of chicken breast or tenders in a casserole dish, add a small amount of chicken broth and bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes.  It is yummy!

Also, one of the allowed condiments is BBQ sauce, so you could brush a little of this on the chicken and cook the same way.

Eleaner, first of all welcome to the forum and to IPD.  Now, I think you've already answered your own question.  When you said   'My problem is that I leave for a family reunion on Friday which is only day 5.  We won't come back until day day 10.  There is no way I will be able to follow the diet.'

This is no way to go in to a new way of eating.  You are already telling yourself and the rest of us you will fail.   Please don't do this to yourself.  Start the diet when you can devote time to it.  This way of eating is strict and requires prepartion and discipline.

My advice would be to go on with your vacation and start anew when you return from your vacation.

Good Luck,
Jayelle

I'm a new Idiot, and just about to begin the 11-day cycle.

Living in France, I've no idea where to find oat bread. Does anybody know of a recipe, preferably suitable for baking in a bread machine, please?

Well this Saturday I have to attend my cousin's graduation party, and I'm currently involved in the idiot proof diet. The food that will be served there will probably consist of heros, hamburgers and hot dogs.. My family is the type of family that would force you to eat a hamburger or something, so I'm really not sure what to do..

What do most of you do when you have to attend a party and it doesn't have the same food that there is on the menu for the idiot proof diet?

I know that the chicken has to be boneless and skinless, but I was wondering if you can cook the chicken with the bone and skin and then only eat the white meat?

I have a really good, really easy crockpot recipe for chicken that would be nice to use on "chicken" days, but I think it might be too dry if I just put boneless skinless breasts in the crockpot alone.  It's just a spice mixture that you make up and rub on the chicken and then you cook it in the crockpot the next day.

My non-educated guess...

First, I can't imagine the bone matters at all. If you don't choke on it, you could eat it! Just kidding.

It's the skin that is full of fat of course, and I'm sure it would be fine however you cook it just so you don't eat the skin. I'm sure the chicken would be a little greasier cooked with the skin, but that's getting pretty fussy.

However, I always buy boneless skinless chicken breasts and if I cook them slowly they are always moist. So I'd just try it without the skin.

Maybe someone who actually knows how to cook will give you some better info. ;)

Thank you, I didn't think it would really matter but I wasn't sure.  I think I'll just do it my usual way, and leave the skin on for cooking.   I'm all for NOT cooking one dinner for myself and another for the rest of my family.  :)

If anyone is interested, the recipe is for

STICKY CHICKEN

4 tsp salt

2 tsp paprika

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp thyme

1 tsp white pepper

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp black pepper

Mix everything together and rub on raw chicken. Let it sit overnight in the fridge.  Cook in crockpot on LOW for 8 to 10 hours.

I usually make this with bone in chicken breasts.  I have heard of using a whole chicken but haven't tried that myself yet.  I might try it this week.  I would probably add a small amount of water to the crockpot if using boneless skinless breasts.  The rub is pretty spicy, be sure to not overload the chicken with it if you do not care for super spicy food.  The obove recipe makes enough rub for me to use it more than once.

The chicken recipe sounds great!  I have cooked a whole chicken in the crockpot, and don't recommend it.  The chicken is very moist and tasty, but since the meat "falls off" the bones, the small bones are difficult to remove.

Yes, the chicken is really good.  I highly recommend it.

Thanks for letting me know about the whole chicken in the crockpot problem, I definitely don't want to be picking apart chicken looking for tiny bones all night.  :nono:

I'd just go through the line -- and nibble! Only take a very small portion of the items that will least sabotage your efforts.  I have been to receptions that I know I have to stay away from the table -- and I just politely say "I can't eat today" or "Thanks, but "I'm fasting".  Really family can be the worst in trying to get you off your plan -- but with a sweet smile!! tell them your stickin' to YOUR plan! and have a great day.

Hey all!!

Im thinking about starting this diet, but i am not totally sure about it.  Is it healthy?  I have tried everything from LAW, to WW, to calorie counting and watching my carbs, nothing seems to work, well, i lose weight somewhat but im sooo hungry i end up binge eating...:(

I really need something different, i like the idea of having 3 cheat days too...lol.  That perks me the most... How exactly does it work?  11 days on 3 days off?  you get to pick your foods?  Please let me know.. i have read the website but im not willing to pay unless im absolutely sure... thanks

Becky,

I'll let others that know about FL4I answer about that, but as for your past failures... I think many of the reasons for your failures will be addressed on this page in the tutorial:

Living in France, I've no idea where to find oat bread. Does anybody know of a recipe, preferably suitable for baking in a bread machine, please?

I have looked and searched and not found one either. :(

Hey, Becky.  Welcome to the board.  Many seem to be on vacation or like us, we are just not active right now.  But drop back by and we will help where we can. :D

I think this diet is extremely healthy.  My wife and I are in great shape (now) with low cholesterol and much lighter than before.  11 days the foods are put in a menu for you that you can eat in any order.  For the three days, you can eat what you like, but you have to watch the quantities as always.  As Jayelle points out, this is a way of eating (WOE) for us and it continues on or off diets.  It is just plain smart.

Read Peter's tips here: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tips.html.  They align very well with this diet (or vice versa).

found this on the web, don't know if it is what you are looking for.
Oat bran adds fibre to this delicious bread. You may leave out the gluten but the bread will be denser. Makes a 2 lb. loaf. Recipe from Donna German. 1 1/3 cups water 2 1/2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup oat bran 2/3 cup oats 3 cups bread flour 2 tablespoons vital wheat gluten (optional) 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast 12 servings 1 loaf Change to: loaf US Metric 4 hours 5 minutes 5 min prep

  1. Add ingredients to bread machine pan in order given, or according to your machine instructions.
  2. Set on whole wheat cycle.

I am just wondering... if you only have about 10lbs to lose can it still be lost as rapidly as 11 days? Or even in two cycles of the diet? I hope so!

Second, I was wondering if any of you dedicated "WL4I" veterans hate the name of this diet as much as I do. I can't speak for the non-veggie version, but my version is decently balanced and the weight loss advice they offer is sound. So why did they have to go giving it such a "scam"-my name?! They make it virtually impossible for you to recommend this diet to your friends without embarrassment!

Anyway, hope to hear some encouragement from you. I've just gained 10lbs thanks to the stress of a move (a move which also took me away from my favorite yoga studio :() and am hoping I can get it off in 11 days! Since I feel like I packed it on in 11 days!

Hey Sammi and Welcome.  Ya know, the name of the diet doesn't bother me.  I think about it like this, all those whatever for dummies books are very successful and people aren't embarassed to say they use those so why should this be any different?
I didn't tell any of my friends about the plan until I actually had lost some weight with it.  I just told them I was watching what I ate and was being more careful when making food choices.

Also, I don't know how quickly you can expect to take off the ten pounds, but I do know that this eating plan gets results.  Keep in mind though that on the first cycle most of what you lose will be water weight.  Be sure to drink your daily 10 glasses or 80 ounces.  It is very important.

Okay, enough of that.  Good Luck with those sneaky ten pounds.

Jayelle
