| Just wondered if anyone has done the exercise in 10 minute spurts. I can do ten minutes of walking but 30 is too much right now. I just ran across this diet yesterday searching online for a miracle. So far so good. Lisa

It usually takes your body about five minutes to warm up...can you try going 20 minutes? You can do a slow warm up--10 minutes normal pace--and then 5 minute cool down. Just a suggestion. But, I think doing any activity is awesome--so if you only feel comfortable doing 10 minutes...go for it!

I know that the FL4I handbook talks about the importance of not "over-exerting" yourself on exercise. Are there any runners on this diet plan? I mean...I'm about 250lb & I've been running for a few years....I really enjoy it. I'd hate to give that up. Plus, I also lift weights just for toning purposes right now as I don't want to lose the muscle I have.
Any thoughts?? Anybody......Bueller.....Bueller??

If you are a runner, I would not stop. I do high intensity stair steppers and aerobics and this did not stop me losing.
Walking, in my opinion, is a way to get us into exercising in a non threatening way that we can all do. And to hear it is very effective is great! However, I think running is very good and if you enjoy it, do it!

| I'll definitely keep it up! That's good to know. Granted, I'm 250lbs and a runner...go figger. I guess I just couldn't seem to give up the good food for a long time.

Hello folks
I am just starting FL4I for the first time. What I'm not clear about is the role of exercise in the diet. I had thought that a lot of walking was recommended if you were following the 10 Rules diet where you decide your own food based on the Rules, but that if you were following, as I am, a diet generated for you, you did not need to exercise. But a lot of posts mention the need for exercise.
If we need to exercise, what is the best sort?
Thank you!!

Hi,
I'm no expert, but I think walking on a regular basis is fine.
Personally, I try to make it to the gym for treadmill work 3 or 4 times a week, and I walk for 35 minutes each time with a 5-minute cool down.
I do think some sort of exercise speeds up any weight loss program. Diet and exercise sort of go together.

| Exercise is key, especially if you're past the age of 30! I'm at the gym 3-4 times a week. When I can't get there, I do a dvd here. I have the billy blanks tae-bo ones and they're great. I either do the treadmill, ellipitcal or take a class at the gym. Then I lift weights for 10-15 minutes. I'm pretty sure that exercise speeds up your metabolism, so you're going to lose more weight that way. Best wishes! You can do this!

You're right the diet doesn't require that you do the walking, or any other kind of exercise, it's only if you follow the ten rules diet, and it's also a way of keeping the weight off when you have lost as much as you want to.
I am probably going to do a bit of yoga and pilates but just because I want to, it's not a necessary part of the diet. I also get the impression that the diet wouldn't even work that well if you exercised too strenously, although this claim is never actually made, it just seemed to be implied to me.

Thank you guys for all this. What Jeliza said was what I had picked up too. Also the bit about burning fat not carbs. So I reckon that I will do a bit - just walking - even though I am not following the Ten Rules diet. Maybe do half an hour a day to start with. Day 6 today and all is going fine - lots of protein seems to fill me up very well. Plus I love veggies - roll on Day 8!

| I'm 33 and started this diet on Tuesday. I'm recovering from a badly broken ankle and leg which is why I put on so much weight in the first place but means I can't do any excercise apart from the odd short walks. I have lost five pounds in five days so I'm really pleased but time will tell how it will work out in the long term.

| Dell...I am on day 6 of the diet. I have followed it very carefully and I do 30 min of walking a day, sometimes 2x a day. I have only lost 2 lbs and I am so bummed! I need to lose another 8-10lbs in the next 6 days! I am 132lbs and need to egt to 122lbs. How did you lose the 5lbs in 5 days? I lost 1lbs each day for the 1st 2 days and I haven't lost anymore since!

| Alexandra - unless you are very short, you're not actually overweight - this can slow down weight loss.

| Well in that case it should be working! Are you definitely not eating too much at a time, and are you drinking the 10 glasses of water a day?

Yeah it's only in the rules and doesn't come up on the generated menu so i think a lot of people miss it, but that will definitely be why you're not losing. I don't know why it works, but it does! I find on the first day (after cheat days) I find it REALLY hard to drink all ten, but by the third day I can end up needing more than 10!
Hope it goes better now and good luck!

Yeh, exercise is only required in the Diet Handbook, not the Diet Generator.
But, I would really recommend still doing exercise whether you are on a diet or not. You should be after a lifestyle change rather than just a temp plan to lose weight. If you make a lifestyle change, then you don't really need to focus on so many rules.
Incorporate exercise in your daily routine. Even if it's as simple as walking the stairs rather than take the escalators.
Avoid resistance (strength) training and concentrate on light aerobics. Resistance training just builds the muscle and helps you gain weight. Eg: using weights and hydraulic machines.

New to this. researching the heck out of it...and don't let my member name fool you...I'm really very sweet.
I just bought the FL4I and my partner and I are planning to start it next week. But excercise...the diet plan pretty much seems to not want you to do any excercise, or minimal. I'm at the gym 4 to 5 days a week in the mornings. I do 45min to 1 hour of elliptical or treadmill then move on to serious lifting.
My concern is, will this really effect the diet? There doesn't seem to be much in the line of answers for this. Can anyone help before I and my partner begin this?

Hi eeggr..welcome....at the discussion site we have had avid weightlifters, martial arts, aroebic fans and dancers..hikers...you name it...strenuous excercise burns glycogen(sugars) in the muscle...moderate excercise burns fat (brisk walking is the best for fat loss)...but all excercise is good and builds muscle which burns fat...but since we have so many excercisers here...lets face it...it must not burn alot of fat or we wouldn't be here...most of us have added a daily walk to burn fat to our routines...some have taken a break from the gym...we all do our own thing and still lose the weight. If you work out with weights you will need to add protein on fruit days...we have found this necessary. Hop over to the discussionand go to the end and post if you want alot of opinions from dieters who know.

Sunshine,
Thank you for your response. I had been wondering about the addition of protein to the mix and you merely clarified what I was thinking. Since neither my partner nor I want to give up the lifting, we may need to tweak a bit. As much as we want to lose the weight (mostly brought on by quitting smoking), we don't want to lose muscle mass either.
