When looking to start a new diet where should you start?  If you want to cut calories and fat then the carbs seem to go up.  If you try to cut the carbs then the calories and fat seem to go up.  At this point in time I really need help.  I am very over weight at 207 and only am 5'4.  If anyone out there who is reading this can give a busy single mother some help on where I should begin getting it start I would be thankful.  I could also use some ideas on how to work in a workout in this busy life.  Thanks!:dizzy:

I'm sure you'll get some good replies which is, after all, the purpose of this forum. But I'd also like to suggest you consider reading my FAQ. I've spent five years writing them, and their purpose is to give you a basic understanding of diet and weight loss.

You ask where to start, and the answer isn't with just one more diet. It's educating yourself. Maybe in your quiet time before the kids get up you could start each day reading one.

Probably as a single mom you don't have to worry about working out as much as learning to eat highly nutritious, low calories foods. Though exercise is important for your health.

Welcome to the forum and I wish you the best,

Hi WannaBe,

Peter's right. Do educate yourself.

Albert Einstein said, "The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them."

Being overweight is a significant problem for a lot of people these days because they don't understand how nourishment works.

The idea of eating fewer calories to lose weight may appeal to one's sense of the obvious but for many, caloric intake may not be an issue. The problem? An unbalanced metabolism caused by eating too much poor quality food and not enough good quality food. Take fats, for example. There are fats that cause weight gain and fats that tend to promote weight loss. I suggest you learn about them.

Two excellent books are Know your Fats by Mary G. Enig, PhD and Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Mary Enig (again) and Sally Fallon, MS. I have read or skimmed hundreds of books about nutrition in general and weight control in particular and believe these two ladies are just about tops in terms of explaining why people gain unwanted pounds and what can be done about permanently controling one's weight.

For website info, see other posts by me in this forum.

It's vitally important that you educate yourself and then experiment to find what works for you. Your natural preferences don't seem to be protecting you from unwanted weight gain so you'll need to retrain your food habits. Whatever you do, don't restrict your caloric intake too much. That can alter your metabolism making it even more difficult to lose or maintain weight loss.

One other excellent book is the Schwarzbein Principle II by Diana Schwarzbein, MD. Dr. S. generally has people add fat and reduce carbohydrate which balances the endocrine system. Often people gain weight at first (just the opposite of what you want) but then the pounds begin to drop off slowly, steadily, and healthily.

She also discusses metabolic differences of genetic origin that suggest individualized approaches are wise.

Hope this helps,

Dave Brown

It seems to me that the main thing people are neglecting on these forums is protein. Just because you eat protein doesn't mean you have to eat fats. Chicken, tuna, egg whites, low fat cottage cheese, and whey protein supplements are all great ways to get protein into your body without the added carbs or fat. Fish contain important fatty acids and are packed with protein. Eat lean red meats on occasion. Drink water. Taper your carbs towards the end of the day but by no means cut them out entirely.

Other than that, read read read. This forum is a great place to get advice but like the others have said, you have to educate! Good luck!

Hi there!

Well, here is some good news....you asked where to start and just by being here, you have already started! I truly believe that just by educating yourself you are on the road to a healthier self!

Now...start by looking at what you eat and when. Are you heading for the high fat easy kinds of foods that only leave you feeling drained and hungry and hour later? Are you skipping meals then find your self starved and over eating?

I am finding that most folks out there do not need to 'diet' they need to change their eating habits and lifestyles. Try working in more fruits and veggies into your diet, I am always mentioning the benefits of water.....keep a water bottle on hand all the time. It helps curb snacking and keeps your body hydrated.

I find that making a meal plan for the week also helps. I plan my meals for the week and make a list before I hit the grocery store. Then I only buy what is on the list. Sure I will put munchies on there but that is popcorn, low cal/fat snacks like rice chips and cakes. I am a sucker for caramel rice cakes!

I am a cookbook freak, yes I can admit it, I also rely on the Internet for quick and easy recipes. I normally have to have dinner made and eaten in about an hour. There are so many recipes out there that are not only flavourful but quick and easy to make.

Now...the other part to becoming healthy is getting your body moving. Walking, hiking and bikeriding is something the whole family can enjoy. Using free weights or videos is easy to do at home. There are so many ways to get your heart rate up, you just have to get moving.

Good luck to you!
