Today: I'm turning 17 in July (the 28th), I currently weigh 157 and I'm 5'6. I still have a goal weight of somewhere between 120 and 135.

November 2004: I embarked on a 1200 calorie/day diet. I was 168 when I began, and by February or so I was down to a fluctuating 147-150.

April 2005: AP tests hit. For those of you who don't know about the AP crunch, there are a series of subject tests that could very well determine which college I end up at. In any case, I was stressed, and I gave up on any dieting. I gained back about 10 pounds... which brings me up to date.:pig:

In any case, I'm trying to diet again, but I feel so disillusioned. One day I'll decide to starve myself, the next I'm borderline bulimic, and the next I am setting all kinds of different limitations on myself. Next thing I know I'm at a bakery scarfing down 2-4 pastries in one sitting.

I'm pathetic, depressed, and losing control. In some ways, I feel like it would be easier to be living on my own, and hence controlling all of the food that ends up at my house, and also what exercise equipment and such I could keep at home. I feel stifled by my living situation. I know what I can't do, but have no idea what I can do.

So, a list of what I'm incapable of doing:
1. Controlling my eating habits.
2. Deciding on a good diet plan. Many sites say a diet under 1200 calories a day won't work well, and they also say your metabolism slows to whatever your intake is. I'm a little worried about all of this.
3. Joining a gym or buying any kind of home equipment. I am going to sign up for a 4day/week weight training class at the local JC this summer, but for the most part my funds won't support a gym membership, and my house won't support a treadmill.
4. Coercing my friends into exercising or dieting with me. Most of them are already healthy, active people, who don't live near me or share many interests.

Anyway, I feel terrible for this complaining rant, but I would love any support or ideas for a training routine, a calorie limit, pretty much anything!

Much love-

Hi,

I'm 58 years old. We have three daughters ages 17, 21, and 25. They're all size 6 at this point but two have put on weight (15 to 30 pounds more than they weigh now)temporarily in the past. None of them know a whole lot about nutrition though I've encouraged them read a few pages of selected material on occasion. They do, however, know the difference between food that nourishes and food that causes damage to one's metabolism. So if you want to get serious about controling your weight permanently, here's what I suggest. Read a few chapters in a few different books and explore several web sites. As you do this, show portions of what you're reading to whomever prepares the food in your household. I'm guessing your family consumes canola oil, low-fat dairy products, margarine, and possibly soda pop. You did mention that you buy pastries at a bakery. You need to understand what these foods do to your metabolism. You need to learn to choose foods that contribute to sound health, not destroy it.

A calorie limit? Please don't go that route. While I'm not suggesting you can gorge yourself three times a day and still lose weight, you CAN eat more calories and lose if those calories are of the right kind (you probably need more fats and proteins and less carbohydrate) and of good quality.

You mentioned being depressed. That's common for people on low-calorei/low-fat diets who are consuming the wrong sorts of fats to boot. In the United States we're eating way too much of vegetable oils that are high in omega 6 fats. They're in fried foods, snacks, salad dressing, prepared foods, baked goods, peanut butter, candy, etc. I suggest you research omega 3 fats on mercola.com or on doctoryourself.com.

It's important that you get some exercise as well. Food quality and exercise are like two wings of an airplane. They will help lift you out of your depression. And as you improve the quality of your food intake you'll FEEL more like exercising.

Here's some suggested reading:

The Schwarzbein Principle by Diana Schwarzbein, MD.  (Introduction is good)

This Slimming Business by John Yudkin, MD.

Did You Ever See a Fat Squirrel by Ruth Adams

Why Raise Ugly Kids? by Hal Huggins, DDS.

Eat Fat, Lose Weight by Barry Groves, PhD.

Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Mary G. Enig, PhD and Sally Fallon, MS.

Know Your Fats by Mary G. Enig, PhD    (This is a really, really good book about fat metabolism)

To find good information on the inter net I suggest you type the following phrases and names into a search engine.

secondopinions.co.uk

westonapricefoundation.org

thincs.org

Penelope J. Greene

Roger J. Williams

These are just a few of the resources available for you to inform yourself about fat metabolism. The important thing is that you educate yourself so that you can safely negotiate the perils of the modern supermarket. To paraphrase an 18th century scholar (Dr. Samuel Johnson) The goal of education is discernment; the ability to tell the good from the bad, the genuine from the counterfeit, and to prefer the good and the genuine to the bad and the counterfeit.

There's a lot of counterfeit food out there and it is ruining the mental and physical health of countless millions everywhere because they do not understand how nourishment works. The fact that we can eat poor quality food for years before we experience serious difficulty is our undoing.

In conclusion, there are three major factors that determine one's health destiny: habits, circumstances, and genetics. You can't do a lot about your genetics. If you have a tendency to put on weight easily (some people don't) you still can alter your habits and improve your circumstances. To see what needs to be done (and I can't emphasize this enough) you need to educate yourself.

Wish you success,

Weallfloaton,

Please don't make the same mistake that so many dieter's make.  The "starve myself for a day" thing is the perfect recipe for failure. I promise you that you will have uncontrollable hunger the following day that will result in eating 2 days worth of food (maybe even more). Without going into a long boring sermon about what you should eat, take a little info. from all the plans out there. Everyone from Richard Simmons to Dr. Atkins has some good rules to follow. Try eating 6 times a day with only 2 of the 6 being lighter meals. The rest, a piece of fruit. When I first started my lifestyle change I used 2 of the most important pieces of exercise equipment that you can find. Pavement and concrete. Yes, that's right, and I don't mean lifting it either. Walking, jogging, or running, it's always there and it doesn't have open hours, also the membership is cheap as dirt. If you choose walking, make sure it's not at a shopping at the mall pace. Just like everything else that I have said here, it's just my opinion but exercise helps clear my mind of negative thoughts.

   Good luck,

                     Tom

hey weallfloaton (hey thats a cool song too....)

lets be honest - anorexia/ bulimia are NOT a safe, healthy, or smart way to go about weight loss... ya?  while settinga calorie limit can be good and bad - if the need for control is strong - aim for like 1,500 cals a day.  eat things that are low in saturated, trans fat, and high in monosaturated fats, eat high fiber stuff, whole wheat/ whole grain, try soy based protiens, or if thats pushing it, try skim milk instead of the higher fat kind like2%.  eat less sweets, and more fruits and veggies.  after a while, a pastry will seem sickening sweet, and a pear will taste like a treat. (you can re train your taste buds like  that.. its kinda cool)  get some excersize in too. cardio and weight training.  not nesscicarily at a gym. do crunches, push ups, lunges etc. you can do those in your room!  get cardio in too.  go out and bike ride, walk, run, jump rope, play basketball, swim, rollerblade, tae bo tapes? the list can go on forever!

i'll tell you also, i have the same goal weight as you do. right now im 5'6'' and 150 pounds. i want to get to 120 - 130. somewhere in there.  if you want we can do the diet buddy thing - i always need someone holding me accountable anyway, haha. if you are interested  - my AIM sn is flyawayana112 and I can give you my e-mail address -- just write me a Private Message by clicking on my user name over to the left.

pleast dont go further with the eating habbits you stated before.... they sound all to familiar to what i started doing when i was younger. and it only ended in a world of ED that im yet to escape completely.  its good that you can say "this is what im doing, i know it isnt normal, i need to find another way etc." you still have common sense. go with it. STOP NOW. talk to someone, anyone, find a healthy way to change your lifestlye so you can lose the weight a helathy way. i know depression makes this all that much harder. it makes everything that much harder... but be strong. you can do it. and sorry for ranting on and on!

Fly... this is off topic but excuse me for taking care of a little business here.

I edited your e-mail address out of your post because "spiders" search the web for them and add them to junk e-mail address lists. It's all automatic!

But I also just fixed things so guests (and spiders) can't see the user profiles... you have to be logged in now to see them... so you can display your e-mail address in your profile for other members to see.

Lastly, if you want to setup a private forum with a group I can create a forum that only members of the group will be able to see -- read and post in.

Thanks, Peter:monkey:
