I'll start with explaining myself a little. I'm 18, female, 5 foot 4, about 138 pounds.
I've always been very active with organized sports but always carried a little extra weight around. Now that i'm no longer involved with competitive sports, i've really focused myself on living a healthier lifestyle. I've really taken to running. All summer i've been running 3 miles 6 days a week, light weight training 4 days a week, and i've dramatically changed my diet.
I'm a semi-vegetarian, I don't consume any carbonated or sugary drinks, and i've stopped eating any sweets or "bad" carbs. If anything, i may not be consuming enough calories per day...
i consider myself to be very dedicated to my diet/exercise plan but i can't lose those "extra ten pounds" for the life of me! most of this weight is in my lower belly ...and despite all the ab workouts and running, it WONT go away! PLEASE HELP!

Assuming you are a woman, based on your stats, your RMR is 1391. This is how many calories you burn each day just to live. Since you are close to your goal weight, you need to eat at least this many calories daily.
Since you are physically active, you might need to eat even more. I would recommend adjusting your calorie intake gradually until you start to see results.
Finally, make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet, including fruits, veggies, whole grains, and good fats. Since you are a semi-vegetarian, you might not be getting enough protein. Make sure to do that.
Good luck!
(P.S. - If you're not a woman, I apologize. One of these days, a gender assumption is going to backfire in my face! LOL)

I guess the word female in the first sentence really didn't narrow it down for Crimson

Hey now! In my defense, the word female wasn't in the original post. She edited it to add it in there. LOL
Of course, I've been known in the past to miss obvious things. I got that from my mother - one time at the store, she totally panicked, asking "Where's my purse?!?" It was on her shoulder the whole time.

Ok, you're BMR using the Harris-Benedict formula for women: BMR=655+(4.35 x weight)+(4.7 x height)-(4.7 x age) is 1472 calories per day. You need 1472 calories per day minimum. This formula is the most accurate that I know of to date. I highly recommend you get the book Winning by Losing by Jillan Michaels. This book will explain all about BMR, TTE (Thermal Effect of Food), Activity Factor, and exercise.
I platued for about a year and couldn't figure out why until a friend told me to try strength training. So I started lifting weights, dropped 10 pounds and two inches in my waist. You may not lose any weight when weight lifting, but you have to remember that you're building muscle and burning fat. And muscle weighs more than fat. DO NOT rely on your scale. Rely on your MEASUREMENTS! You may need to step up your strength training. I have a home gym and bought the book Weight Training Made Easy by Dr. Joyce Vedral. I followed that books strength training plan, (minus the diet tips) and started losing again. Hope this has helped! (You can get these books pretty cheap on Amazon)

I still think the RMR is a better measurement, at least for me. I do hard exercise, but apart from that, I'm very sedentary. I hardly ever leave the house, I sit or lie down for most of the day, and I sleep a lot. BMR calculates in calorie burn for standard daily activities, whereas RMR does not. I suppose it really depends on how active you are.

| Well, I guess it's not really that important whether you choose RMR or BMR. They will both give you a ballpark number of where you should be at. I like the BMR for myself, but I think maybe it's just personal preference. Either way, you add an activity factor, plus any additional exercise calories burned. This will give you your total number of calories burned to maintain per day. If you're interested, there's a really great book that helped me to lose the weight. I'm now at 113 lbs. (Female) It's called Winning By Losing by Jillian Michaels.

I know exactly where you're coming from. My tummy is my "problem area" too. It's very frustrating, because it seems as though every ounce of extra fat I gain is stored there.
I try to do crunches every morning, and I also find that running gives me a total body workout. I specifically concentrate on sucking my ab muscles in while I'm running, to make doubly sure I'm targeting that area.

I agree with the others that you should start with some weight training. I stated doing a few weight things and some regular tummy exercises and I am losing inches off of the middle.
From the research I have done on this. You need to do cardio, core, and weight exercises to get the fat off. From your height (same as mine). You could lose some more weight. I am at 125lb average and I still have a stomach problem. So, now I am focusing on the fat instead of the weight. It seems to be working.
I don't remember if you mention doing any other exercises besides the crunches and running. But, I have been doing regular stuff like leg lifts, push ups, that kind of thing, and it seems to be helping also along with the weight stuff.
Good Luck, hope you see that stomach disappear.

| Hi, I had the same problem. The truth is, you don't need to do weight training, less calories, more calories, none of that. judging by your descripion, If you do all of the things you listed and it is your lower belly you are trying to get rid of, you need to do a colon cleanse. The LEADING cause of a patruding belly espesially the lower belly is excess waste and left over food stored in the colon and intestines. It may sound gross but my doc told me the same thing about 3 months ago, I did what she said and now I nolonger have a lower belly. She suggested ACOG Colon Cleanse because I said I didn't want unclontrolable bowels or any thing like that because alot of colon cleansers make you go really bad. She said that ACOG was the most gentle herbal cleanse she has come across in 20 years. She was right because I took it and I thought it wasn't working because I only went to the bathroom when I naturally had too. Then, I noticed a big difference in my belly and mid section because I was eliminating most of that excess material in my body. You'll love it because this will be a great addition to your already very healthy life style. Last edited on 25 September 2008 11:09 pm by

How long do you have to take that colon cleanse thing for?
And what's the difference between BMR and RMR?

| I would think any kind of fiber would do the same thing as a colon cleanse.

| It comes in a two month supply. You take 1 bottle 3 times per year. It is recommended that you take it three times per year or as needed.

| Your right, a fiber will do some of what the traditional colon cleanse would do however, ACOG is a special formula created over 50 years ago by Dr. Alvenia fulton (the pioneer of herbal medicine). This formula contains several herbal fibers in addition to special herbs and foods that stimulate digestion and metabolism. This also helps your body absorb nutrients better by eliminating the waste build up in our intestines. I've learned a great deal by just taking ACOG and doing a little research here and there. Im happy to pass on the knowlege.

I actually agree with Dianna. Usually I'm very big on just maintaining a healthy diet, and improving health just by eating the right foods. But I used a colon cleansing product about a year and a half ago, and it worked much different for me than fiber ever has... and I eat quite a bit of fiber (usually between 25-50 grams, sometimes more).
I can't explain it, but it just felt quite a bit different, and better. The one I tried was Colonix by Dr. Natura... I'd really like to try it again, but it's 88 dollars for 1, and I'm broke, plus I cut up my credit card so I don't even think I can order anything online. I really want to do another colon cleanse though, so I think I'm going to start looking around some local stores.
No matter what you decide to do, good luck! And keep us posted with what you decide and what works/doesn't work !

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
I don't know that much about colon cleanse, but I know straylight is doing it. So, you can maybe see if there is something in her diary about it.
Also, I think that good old fashion fiber works just as well. Ground flax seed on toast or cereal is excellent. Warning on the fiber, if you take to much, you can get dehydrated, so be careful. Also, work your way up on the dose, to avoid any radical bathroom calls, lol.
I think it's good to drink lots of water anytime. Not sure about morning and flushing toxins. But, what the heck, go for it.
