I weigh 180lbs and am considered obese (per BMI) for my height and age (5'4" 32 yrs).  I dipped to 177 two weeks ago and upped my physical activity to ensure the final 3 pounds would be lost to get out of Obesity range.  I stepped on the scale Monday morning and I gained 178, I kept my routine as before thinking maybe I was just gaining muscle, but I weighed again first thing this morning (Wednesday) and NOW I'm at 180 again??

I have been on the same diet/weight loss routine since August 1st of this year and I have successfully taken 25 lbs off.  I eat 1450-1500 calories per day AND I do small weight training (<5 lbs) and calisthenics for my activity no less than 3 times per week My husband and I hike cross country for an average of 1.5 miles every weekend.

Why am I gaining?  Is my metabolism a train wreck or what?  I am on birth control pills and am still 1.5 weeks from starting my period.

The only thing I know I changed is I started eating more carbs and increased water intake.  I was balancing my diet  30% Protein 40% Fat 30% Carbs before I increased the carbs -- unintentional, I just discovered Premium Multigrain crackers. :D  I immediately cut the crackers and the extra water when I got off the scale on Monday and went back to my 30/40/30 plan.

I NEED to get under 174 so that I am empowered to continue to lose weight and hopefully reach my goal of 147 -- just inside the BMI healthy range. (I don't want to be any smaller -- my ribs show at 147.)  If I keep gaining I'm not going to be able to continue mentally.  PLEASE HELP.

If the crackers had a lot of sodium in them, you could be retaining water.  I wouldn't cut my water intake.  It helps to flush out the system.  When I've had a high sodium day, the next day the scale jumps by 5 lbs.  I increase my water intake and it goes back down.

Thanks, I'll give increasing my water intake a try.  I went over to the SOS forum and realized I probably should have posted there, sorry about that...

I've almost decided that I'm not going to get back on the scale until right before Thanksgiving (and only then so I can judge how careful I need to be with the Thanksgiving meals) -- that way if I gain even more before it falls again I won't know it.  I will go to a doctor if I gain more than 10 lbs or pass the 30 day mark with no results.

I have long susupected that I have a thyroid problem, but an intermittent one.  I had my GYN do a blood test, but I don't think he tested TSH levels.  The test found nothing wrong and since I've lost 25 lbs I thought I'd wait on throwing up a red flag and see if I get past this -- my short term goal is to get out of Obesity range and my long term is to not be "overweight" at all -- even if I'm just one lb inside the mark for overweight.

I'm prepared for my long term goal to take years to obtain since it took 10 years to put them on, but I want out of obesity just to protect my health and increase my chances of living a full life.

Don't forget that muscle is heavier than fat!!  Could it be that your workout is increasing your muscle tone, which is affecting the weight?  Not sure about this, but would a good way of checking  be to start measuring key areas of your body to see if you are still losing size?

Well, I thought of that, but I'm only using 1, 3 and 5 lb weights with multiple reps.  I don't have a gym membership and I don't have anything heavier besides my 15 and 17 lb dogs ;) to lift.  How much more does lean muscle weigh??  I had gained 1 lb over last week when I weighed on Monday and to make sure it wasn't a fluke I weighed again on Wednesday (after I had stopped extra water and the crackers) and I had gained two more pounds on top of the one!!!  That's 3 lbs gained in a week or two!!  and my caloric intake can't possibly explain it.

That's why I suspect a thyroid problem.  I have never in my life eaten more than 2000 calories -- though I never watched sodium and/or carbs so the weight gain can be explained somewhat.  However somehow I got 50 lbs over my healthy weight in ten years' time.  I've never been sedentary but my joints do not allow me to exercise intensly for more than two days a week (I don't have a pool, and again, no gym membership).

I took Tae Kwon Do for a year (2x per wk) and our instructor was pretty good at kicking our behinds (sometimes literally) -- but I never got below 185 nor did I lose more than an inch or two in any given area.  I even dieted for several months during the class and didn't lose a thing.

Why did I lose from August 1st to now?  I prayed.  I'm still praying -- don't get me wrong.  I'm praying that this is indeed a plateau and that I'll get through it.  (I just didn't expect GAIN and it caught me incredibly off guard. I thought at worst I'd hold steady for a while.)  The math says I would have to eat at least 2076 calories and burn nothing in order to maintain my weight (180lbs) yet I eat a max of 1500 calories and do something every day to burn at least 200-300 calories and burn 500+ two days a week with something intense.  Gaining 1 lb doesn't compute -- much less 3 lbs....

Anybody know of a food item that is prescribed for thyroid patients?  Maybe the early days of my diet had something in it that I didn't realize was helping me...  I've eaten just about everything "healthy", but have since focused on the high protein items I really like and try to eat as many fruits, nuts and vegetables I can to fill up the calories to 1450-1500.
