| I'm 56 and 304#, and I'm 6"5"' tall. I don't smoke or drink and my health is good. I started walking 5 weekd ago and for the first week I was really sore. since then, however, I am walking between 5 and 6 miles/day, it takes about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hrs. I walk in a mall and 7 laps is 3/4 mile. The first day I coulld barely make it 1 lap. I am burning in excess of 1000 cal. by walking each day and I have not lost a single pound. I feel much better, my legs are much stronger, my back feels much better and my stamina has greatly increased, but no wight loss.... I havn't changed my diet much, it;s not too bad. I drink high fiber drink each day along with fresh apple and orange juice and carrot juice, have done for a long time. I can't consume as many calories as the charts say that I should but by no means am I starving myself. I purposly didn't go on a low cal diet because I figured that the calories burned would put at a 2 lbs/week loss rate, good huh? I can't figure it out, please help me. Alan

| May I ask how many calories you're taking in? (I hope it is over 2336, which is your unadjusted RMR, that you shouldn't go below)

Hi Alan, Great job on the exercise! Along with the amount of calories you are taking in, what exactly are you eating and when? You did state you consume certain juices each day, but juice, even fresh juice carries very high sugar content that can actually make you gain weight or even keep/maintain while exercising the way you are. Especially if you are consuming them at the wrong times of the day.
What does your daily diet consist of? Do you eat carbs at night before bed or even a lot of fruit throughout the day?

| I havn't been counting calories for the past couple of weeks but I'm certain that it is over 2000. Do I need to start counting calories?

| The fresh juices ( carrot, apple and orange) are consumed in the Am, before 10:00. I'm eating what I've always eatin during the day and I try not to eat within 3 hours of bedtime. Last edited on 1 March 2007 05:54 am by Alan104

If what you've always eaten during the day is how you got to 304# then perhaps counting calories is a good start. You may not need to count calories forever but if you maintain a food diary where you write down your daily calories you may learn how much you are eating [and if you haven't done this exercise before, you may be surprised and may chose to change what you eat]
To lose fat, you shouldn't eat too many calories. You also shouldn't eat too few calories. There is a relatively narrow effective range of calories to consume (not too little, not too much). Therefore, counting calories is a very effective tool for staying in that range. The calculations predict that the low end of your range is around 2336 calories - but remember that it isn't a particularly wide range. The top end might be something like 2730 (depends on the intensity of your activities). So try recording what you eat and sticking within range - that's my recommendation.
