Hello everyone, my name is Alex, I'm 15 years old, male and currently weigh 75kg(160-165pounds) and I'm 5ft 11.

In the past I've battled with my weight, I used to weigh 97kg, this time last year.|
(I lost 20kg in 9 weeks)

Edit: I forgot to mention I usually go to the gym 2-3 times a week for weight training/muscle building sessions, so I'm bigger then the average teenager when it comes to that.

Eating right, and exercising aren't my problem, what I need help with is motivation.

I've set myself a goal to get down to 8-10% body fat, currently at about 18-20%(not to sure) I have the right mindset to do it, but I'm just naturally lazy, usually I just make up excuses "Oh I'm too tired" or "I haven't eaten much today I'll be alright" usually "I'll go to the gym tomorrow"

Could anybody give me, or explain, some motivational techniques, or things to make me not lazy? :( I feel I wont accomplish my goal if I continue what I'm doing :P

Christmas holidays are coming up soon enough, and this is where I go wrong, I don't eat right, I don't go to the gym, I pretty much just sit in bed all day.

But this year I want the exact opposite. I want to amaze my friends at what my body looks like when I come back to school in 7 weeks. But most of all, I want to amaze myself at what me and my body can do.

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex -

Your post confused me...
I have the right mindset to do it, but I'm just naturally lazy...
Seems a bit contradictory.  Mindset and motivation are pretty much the same beast, in this instance.

I'd suggest repeating a few affirmations to yourself, several times a day.   Make them present tense, and worded as if you're already doing what you want to do. Example:

"I always eat according to my plan, and this helps me to achieve my weight loss aims."

I think your problem is that you are convinced you don't have a problem!

By the way, 8 to 10% body fat is not a good thing for a developing body.   Few professional bodybuilders maintain that sort of % between contests.   Might be a more acceptable aim when you're older, but I'd set a less ambitious target for the next few years.   There's little doubt that you'd look and feel great at 13 to 15% body fat....

Good luck with the motivation.

Well, to clarify the mindset thing, I meant as in I have the right motivation in my mind, but when it comes to getting physical I don't 'coz I'm lazy....*shrugs* I dunno if you get that aswell as I do but oh well.

8-10% body fat is bad? I just remember reading that you need less then 12% body fat for abs to show. That's my ultimate goal, they've been trapped under this flab for 7 years

I eat enough food for nutrition as well, so I don't think it'd be a problem.

Edit: 'I think your problem is that you are convinced you don't have a problem!'

What do you mean by this?

There's no hard and fast rule for when abs show through.   It depends on where your body stores fat.   I've been at or below 10% body fat for years now, but my abs don't look 'ripped'.   I decided that health and wellbeing were more important than having 'bling' abs.

I'm much older than you, by the way, so I don't have a growing body to feed.  Even so, 10% is pretty low and I wouldn't try to go lower.

Try the affirmations.   They work for most people I've seen persevere with them.

As for my confusion...   If your mindset's really right, you won't be be able to be physically lazy.   The two are incompatible.

Some more advice:  Don't 'diet' - work out a weight loss plan (with lapses scheduled) and stick to it.   This website has tons of tools and information to help you.

Good luck once again.

Motivation is actually a pretty big deal. Complex problem, no magic wand to wave and fix instantly.

One thing that helps me sometimes is just to take little steps, like maybe, pack gym clothes into bag, then see what I'm prepared to do next, maybe sit back down, or maybe walk to door. So break everything into really small steps, and just do the first one, then if you can, the next one.

Another thing that helps me sometimes is just to sit and think what do I really want? Do I actually want to be healthy, or do I want to sit here? There's no fooling yourself, really. If you don't want to do it, you won't, no matter how much you try to convince yourself otherwise. But if you do want it, really want it, are you willing to give it to yourself? Ask yourself, am I willing to do this? Then adjust your plans according to your answer.

Good luck!

I'm a Stay At Home Mom, so it would be very easy for me to sit around all day and watch tv while the kids run around me, but I have found that the best thing for me to do to boost my motivation is to put on shoes.  For some reason, I can't sit for long when I'm wearing them.  When I wake up, I get into my workout gear and get it over with immediately (well, after breakfast) so I have energy for the rest of the day.

My sister has a college professor who despises the word "lazy" because he feels it's a poor reflection on the "lazy" person's parents.  Instead of you being "lazy", it would be better to say that you have a problem with procrastination, and therefore you can do something to change it... you haven't labeled yourself!

I agree with the pp that you can't be motivated mentally yet not physically.  I used to look at my mommy tummy and think "I should get up and work out" but that's completely different from me getting up and working out.  I heard something yesterday in my workout with Gilad... "Don't wait for inspiration.  Take action and inspiration will come."... or something like that!

It’s the same for writers…

The advice given is not to wait for inspiration before starting to write.  Rather, make it a habit to start writing at a set time.   The inspiration follows.

Similarly, when I used to run on winter mornings, I sometimes had to force myself outdoors.   Yet some of those runs were the best I ever experienced.

Get yourself a calendar and every time you exercise mark that square. Put it where you can see it.  then everytime you look at it you can see when you exercised and when you didn't.  It could make you proud or it could embarrash you.

The pp had a great idea with the calendar... I do that, too.  I give myself a silver star (I like silver better than gold) every day that I work out, and I love seeing the calendar full, and it's very motivating for me.
