Hello, im new to the forums and I am here for one thing. To help me find out what can progressively help me to gain muscle and lose fat. I am an about average guy, about 5'11'' and i am not fat, nor super skinny. At first glance you would think that I have a good body, but my stomach is protruded and i look horrible for a young man. I have been progressively using weight training as a method to try and gain muscle and lose fat, but I havent seen any improvements. Maybe some minor things here or there but all in all i look about the same. I am losing motivation due to lack of results and I am wondering if there are any new things I can try to help me overcome this stump. What should I ask myself as i ponder my lack of results ? Is dieting while excersining crucial or just heresay ? I workout about every other day, and continously try to push the limit of any excersise. (increasing reps, weight, etc.)

I do feel stronger and with more energy, but these improvements are not visible, and my eye cannot see much success.

Any tips/advice/info would help me out alot. Thanks.

According to this guy Ron Brown, whose site I found looking for information on loose skin, lifting weights while on a weight-loss diet is a sure way to lose lean body mass.
bodyfatguide.com/LoseSkin.htm (see the right-hand column, not quite halfway down the page in "Skin Thickness," where he talks about the Extreme Makeover guy)

bodyfatguide.com/AreYouGettingWOrkoutResults.html

Of course he's pushing his book, but I think what he says makes sense and may buy it eventually.

Hope that helps!

Hi Heshiroku,

It is important to realize that each of us has his own unique body chemistry and physiology. This means that some people are naturally lean and some tend to put on weight easily. Some can build muscle mass quickly. Others are not genetically configured to do so. Some can achieve a runners high with little effort and others cannot get there no matter how hard they exercise. Whatever ones genetic makeup, exercise still has many benefits. So I suggest you keep on doing it if you enjoy the bodybuilding routine.

Food quality can make a difference in terms of how easily you add muscle to your physique. I read about one character who gained 26 pounds in one year after switching to a raw foods diet. He was consuming raw eggs, raw meat, and raw milk. He was not working out regularly but said he added one inch to his waist and the rest went on his arms, legs, and chest. You might look into adding raw foods to your diet to see how it affects your metabolism.

Another interesting article by a physician/bodybuilder involved doubling caloric intake for several weeks while doing weight training. Both fat and muscle are gained. Next, one cuts calories back to "normal" caloric intake for a couple weeks while exercising aerobically; you know, running, jumping rope, conducting an orchestra, swimming, bicycling, etc. During this period some weight is lost (mostly fat) while the body adjusts to the new dietary intake and activity level. You then repeat the cycle. My son-in-law says this works. He is so buff!

The most important thing is to eat good quality food and avoid eating poor or bad quality food. A good website to visit is whfoods.com. They are into low-fat dairy and lean meat which I disagree with but they have a list of 100 foods that could give you some idea as to what constitutes healthy eating.

Another website that has good information is westonaprice.org. You can obtain an excellent education in nutrition by exploring that site.

Hope this helps,

Dave Brown
