My trouble is loving food.  I don't want to stop enjoying the foods I love (which is just about everything).   This is a problem because my new job (6 months) requires many hours sitting.  I am 5 feet and weigh about 125 lbs.  You may not think this is heavy, but my ideal weight is about 115 - 117 lbs.  I just gained this weight in the last 3 months.  What I am finding is the way I eat and my current decrease in metabolism are causing me to pack on the pounds.  I am generally an active person.  I run or walk, strenght train, study and practice Tae Chi, and try many weekend warrior activities such as biking, hiking or skiing.  I get home from work and have no energy or desire to be active, so I have been exercising less than I would like.  I eat sometimes like there will be no tomorrow.  I know what is better for me and try to stick to those foods most, but I tell you - put something that just smells or looks good in front of me and I will eat it, even if I am not hungry or just finished eating.  While this only minimally works if I am exercising regularly, it certainly is not working now.  I want to nip this in the bud, but I'm losing my will against food.   I'm starting to need a new size in clothing and really don't like the way I look.  I've been 30 lbs overweight before and don't want to be depressed about how I look ever again.  But I'm starting to feel that way now.  How can I get where I need to be?  I need help!

I think just about everybody that found their way to this forum could say they love food! :)

But a lot of people just need helping learning about the right foods to eat. If you really have a problem with wanting to eat everything in sight, you might take a look at the FAQ, "Could I have an eating disorder?" And I'm not suggesting that you do... just take a look. It's how I found help.

Thanks for the feedback.  I felt embarrassed that I even posted that message.  I always feel I should be grateful that I only have a few pounds to lose and why waste people's time (or space on this message forum) with such a piddly problem.  I am starting to read more about eating disorders.  I thought you had to be anorexic or bulemic to classify as someone with an eating disorder.  I am now finding that any dysfunctional eating can be a disorder.  This is very helpful for me.

Jo, support is soooooo important.  I would love to keep chatting, in or out of this forum.   So far, today, I'm about even with cals vs. activity.  I am trying not to over compensate with the exercise, because then I will somehow justify eating more tonight.:chew:  Wish me luck.  What are you struggling with the most?

Hi there Bridget

I also am not wanting to lose much weight - I am not overweight for my height, I just feel uncomfortable with the weight I am at the moment as I have always been fairly slim.  Since stopping smoking I haven't really watched what I was eating but now I would like to lose about 10 pounds.

I was able to take in less calories than I used yesterday - 72.  It's not much, but it's something.  I did eat a large bag of microwave popcorn and the remainders of a bag of Doritos before bedtime last night.  :nono:  This is what I need to stop doing.  I did not need or even want them.  Then I felt bad about eating them.  I always start out good, but the evening is awful for me.  Any suggestions?

There is a tremendous difference between Doritos and the typical microwave popcorn (which can be full of fat) and healthier popcorn... which is a pretty light, filling, healthy snack!

Right now I use a healthy low fat microwave popcorn with no trans fats or cholesterol, but when I'm not so lazy I air pop it and shake it in a brown grocery bag with just a little butter or whatever... most of it ends up on the bag.

Hi Bridget,

For some people, eating to much carbohydrate stimulates appetite. Decreasing carb intake changes hormone balance which normalizes appetite regulating mechanisms. Here's some recent research:

Effects of Low-Carb Diet on Appetite, Glucose, and Insulin Resistance
Researchers studied diet in a controlled clinical environment among 10 obese people with type 2 diabetes. While staying in an inpatient hospital unit, participants were instructed to continue their usual diet, consisting of meals from the hospital kitchen augmented by food from the outside, for the first 7 days of the trial. Participants were encouraged to eat as much as they wanted of name-brand foods—McDonald's sandwiches, Dunkin' Donuts bakery products, Oreo cookies—for which dietary information was readily available.
After 7 days, all participants switched to a low-carb diet that reduced carbohydrates to about 21 g/day but permitted as much protein and fat as they desired. People were allowed to choose from a menu of foods prepared in the hospital kitchen. They remained on the low-carb diet for the next 2 weeks. All participants were encouraged to maintain their usual level of physical activity.

While on the low-carb diet, the average energy intake decreased from 3,111 kcal/day to 2,164 kcal/day, which contributed to an average weight loss of 3.6 lb during the 14-day low-carb diet phase. The average 24-hour blood glucose levels became normalized, the average A1C level dropped from 7.3% to 6.8%, and insulin sensitivity improved by about 75%, according to researchers.
Although the study had a small number of participants and lasted only a few weeks, it was strictly controlled and provides evidence concerning the value of low-carb diets that may merit further exploration in larger controlled studies.

Boden G, Sargrad K, Homko C, et al.: Effect of a low-carbohydrate diet on appetite, blood glucose levels, and insulin resistance in obese patients with type 2 diabetes. Ann Intern Med 142:403–411, 2005.

If you want some good instruction regarding the low-carb approach, I recommend westonaprice.org.

My thing is food quality. Whether you choose to eat a high-carb diet and exercise like crazy to keep your hormones in balance or eat less carbohydrate and be less active, the important thing is to make certain you obtain complete nourishment from your food. This isn't easy with todays processed foods and monocultured produce. Just remember that everything you choose to eat either nourishes or hurts your health. As Judith Weintraub wrote, quoting Alice Walters in a recent Washington Post Article entitled The Edible Schoolyard, "People have to understand they have to pay more for food. They're paying already with their own personal health. This country has a perverse, dysfunctional relationship with food...As a nation, we're not paying attention.
