Hi glg. I hear your plea. You seem to have a good start on the visuals for yourself and family. Great motivation tools. I too have the "Triple threat disease". I was diagnosed a few years ago with type 2, my bp was always borderline high, and my cholesterol up and down depending on my will against food. Since you are not the only one in your family you have both help and hindrance. Everyone is different in how they metabolize food. Be there for each other, but work your own programs. When I am focused I can stay "on", when I see results it motivates me. It doesn't take a whole lot to fall off the "wagon".
The BEST thing I did for myself was attend a Diabetes Education course. It included a medical diabetes educator and a dietitian. I learned a LOT about what to expect and how to manage my body. Many health insurance plans cover this, mine did.
DAILY TESTING is important, KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Your journal should include your food intake as well as your test #'s. That way you can see how what you're eating affects your balance. I have also added my exercise and water intake. These are things I am working on. I have tested after exercise to make sure it's not to much or if I need to find carbs to not go too low.
READ FOOD LABELS. Look at total carbs not just sugar. Although called "Sugar disease" it's not just sugar you need to look at. I never counted milk, it has carbs. My recent thing is a spread sheet of food I generally eat counting calories, carbs, fat, fiber, protein and sodium. It helps to make better choices at a glance.
Look at the FAQ's on this site. Peter has great info to help you on your journey. Use the tools to help the decision making process. It's a long process, not overnight miracle. For us it's not a diet it's LIFE. The more controlled, the longer and better it will be. You are on the right track, educate yourself to make better decisions. If you want you may email me, check my bio for add. Good Luck

| Hi I am also new here! I started a low calorie diet and exercise plan about 3 weeks ago and so far I have only had one weekend where my eating was not in line with the 1400-1500 calories i have a day. I am very motivated and have been trying to eat good and workout on my eliptical machine 4-5 times a week. I have also been doing crunches and pushups. So far the weight loss has been very disappointing and I have only lost like 2 pounds in 3 weeks. I am a upset about this cause I am following the Biggest Loser plan. I have read their book on how to eat and execise. I am just wondering why I am not seeing the pounds come off. I am trying to stay positive but it is disappointing when the scale doesn't move much. I have been journaling my food I eat. I have been drinking a lot of water, and working out 3-5 times a week. I have been over weight all my life and I am at 208 lbs and 5' 7" now and my goal is to be at 150 lbs by June. Does anyone have any advice for me or anything else that can help me? :D

Please Please Please, believe the people on this site when they say that the slow way is the safe way!! 2 lbs in 3 weeks is not bad!!! It's much better then 0 lbs in 3 weeks isn't it? I have lost as much as 10 lbs since 01/03/06, yet I am now a plateau. BUT, I have not felt this good in years!!!! I am eating better, I am smarter about foods and I know I will get where I want to be eventually, And I know I will keep the weight off becuase of what I have learned.
Take your time. change your diet, exercise, and live! You will get there. As some will say, it may have taken you years to get where you are now. What makes you think you can change that in a month or two?

| I know that it takes time, but I was hoping for 2-3 lbs a week which is not a lot to ask for. Another problem I have seems to be my scale. I bought a $$50 Weight Watcher digital scale that measures body fat too and it seems to be very inconsistant. I can weigh myself at one time and get right back on and it will say another number. Or I can weigh myself at one time and get back on it an hour or so later and it will say another number. What can I do about that and is it reall accurate????

You will find that the best way to monitor your progress is thru measuring your body fat %, but using a folding skin caliper and the appropriate chart. I for one can also testify to the shortcomings of scale. However, I bought a cheapy $12 scale from the drug store, it is accurate, but my weight fluctuates too much. You should not try and weigh yourself every day, but rather weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. For instance, I do not always listen to my own advice, so, here is how my weigh-ins went:
195, 195, 195, 195, 194, 194, 194, 194, 194, 193, 193, 193, 193, 190, 190, 189, 189, 189, 188, 188, 187, 186, 186, 186, 186, 185, 185, 186, 186, 186, 188, 188, 187.
As you can see, this can drive you mad!!!! So personally, I would rather see:
195, 194, 193, 189, etc....
As for the body fat, that gives you a much better status of your health.
Two other great methods that I use as well are weekly pictures, and the tape measure. These do not lie!!
For accuracy on your scale. Try and find something that has a know weight. maybe a 5lb dumbell, or a gallon of water, place on the scale and set the weight.
Good luck. Oh, and just because you have a deficit that "should" warrant a 2 lb/week loss, does not mean you will actually see that. As I said before, Eat healthy, Exercise and things will take care of themselves.

| Where do you get a body fat caliber? What scale do you all think is the best too? Digital or not digital?

I'm a user of eBay so I just searched it for skinfold caliper - this turned out to be cheapest, including delivery.

Hey I'm new here too. I do post on the another diet web site but I'm looking for a diet buddy. I don't have many friends around me to support me in my weight loss efforts but this is my one chance to NOT end up like my mom. She is Type 2 diabetic, has high blood pressure, is overweight and had uterine cancer last year. I'm at risk for all of those. I'm thinking with the way my insulin levels fluctuate right now, I'm already insulin resistant. Not a good sign. If you'd like to buddy up, That would be awesome.

hi
i have the same problem with my scale. so i don't worry about it to much. i just figure as long as it goes down a notch or two. and never goes back up then i'm doing good. also i got a bracelet that was to small or a little tight to go around my wrist. i have now notice i can stick 2 fingers in it . also i have notice that i can see a change in my face . you may not loose pounds all the time but you can see some of the difference in inches. just don't give up. you will get there.:D

since joining this forum i have learnt a lot about myself , weightloss and others .. i have realised that i am not alone, and it is fantastic to say the least, to have this forum to read and turn to for information and moral support. One other thing i have learnt while being here is THROW OUT UR SCALES .. they are evil!! seriously, you will just get urself depressed and want to throw in the towel.. i know, i have been there.. now i just laugh at the scales and i dont get on them. i might get on them in a month or so.. maybe.. or i might just throw them in the bin .. heh..
dont beat urself up when u dont see the weight melting off.. this is normal.. it is a very slow process and i think that losing every gram is worth a pat on the back. The best indicator is how ur clothes feel. Do they feel looser? And.. the most important question is How do you feel? do u feel more energetic, motivated, positive, healthier? if u answered yes to any or all of these questions then ur on the right track..
lastly, welcome to all the new peoples to the forum .. and hi !! i am new myself but i feel more and more at home here everytime i log on ..
it is nice to see/read you all and i look foreward to the journey with you all
blessings smiles and sunshine

WOw, my second post here. I've been busy with work, kids and doing my homework. Does the bracelet thing really work? Maybe that's what I need is a visual reminder of my progress.
Glg-I sent you an email. Also if you have Yahoo Messenger, we can chat sometime.

| Thank you! I am trying to hang in there. Tomorrow is the official one month weigh in. My goal was to have lost 14.4 lbs to be on track to be at my goal by June 6th. Doesn't look like I will be even close to my monthly goal though. If I am lucky it will be about a 5 lb lost and that is it. To me that is too little of weight. Especially with it usually being easier to lose a lot in the begining for most people. Well apparently that theory does not apply to me. haha! Well I will let you all know how the weigh in goes tomorrow!!:D

Girlfly, I'll gladly be your diet buddy too. Don't get too discouraged, really. I've been doing this for 2 yrs and have only lost 25 lbs so far. Not enough for me. I see so many people at their goal weight and I just wonder what's wrong with me too. I guess what's important is that you are making healthy steps to change your life, not just lose the weight. That's a good thing! (oh man, that sounds so martha stewart, lol)
Anyhoo...you can check in with me here or you can email me too. Whatever works for you.

| Well today was the day my monthly weigh in and I was fortunate this week to lose 3lbs. Which was great. I have lost a total of 5.2 lbs now for one month. Not what I had planned, but I am not too disappointed. Just have to work harder for the next month and maybe I can turn that number in to 15 lbs! :D

Girlfly-I go to a weight loss clinic and they want my weight loss to be 1-2 lbs a week. I would have to say with your 5.2 lbs, you're right on track. You're weight loss is going to vary.
How many calories are you taking in a day? I guess I"m wondering what your whole weight loss plan is. Mine is 1461 calories a day (that's what the doctor gave me after I did a metabolic and BMI test0. I'm supposed to be exercising 30 min 5-6 days a week. I manage about 1 hour a day/ 3 days a week. I need to figure out a way to get more exercise in. And my diet they set me up on, centers around eating protein with every meal and snack. Protein is supposed to help with my weight loss and also keep my insulin levels stable. I'm insulin resistant and don't wish to end up diabetic like my mom.
Congrats on losing this month! I crept up and then I finally dropped back down to my previous months weight. Halleluah!

| Well I have been eating 1400-1450 calories a day. I have been trying to do my eliptical machine 4 times a week. I guess for what I have put in to this I should be really happy with 5lbs. Just like most americans i want fast fast results!! The journey continues!:chew:

Girlfly-I'm an impatient person too. I wish I could get instant results, but I guess its that equal and opposite reaction stuff. It didn't take much effort to put on the weight for me, and on the opposite end, I have to put in that much more effort to get it back off. Just wish it were easier. Guess in the end, I can say "I did it" and "it was hard" but I learned alot from the process. I have learned better eating habits, and I know what I'm doing wrong when I do it, instead of being totally clueless.
Aren't those ellipticals killer machines? I did 1/2 hour with my sister on those last night at the gym. Those things make me sweat and burn some calories. I did that and 45 min. of weights. I felt sooo good afterwards, then I woke up going "OH my God, I hurt so bad. No squats today.

Okay...where the heck is everyone?!?!? I've had a busy last few days with work and all so here I am...
I haven't lost any weight but I did better than I usually do and got in 3 days of exercise so far this week. Today I am taking my oldest daughter and my sister is taking her oldest daughter with us to the gym to play raquetball. I've never played before so we're gonna look so "cool".
Back to my homework. Be good to yourselfs to day and have a happy one.

Hello
Any more diet buddies out there?
I just can't seem to stay motivated! Is anyone getting the newsletter from this site? I just signed up for it. Maybe a weekly reminder will help :?
AH! I'm turning 40 next week, and have suddenly decided that I'm NOT ready for it, after having felt that I was for most of the past year. In December I had started showing results of weight loss efforts but then let some injuries (wether real or imagined it didn't matter - I stopped exercising) get the best of me.
I haven't started back to my walking, the weather and my schedule haven't been in sync lately - and usually the weather isn't something I have to think about! BUT I will, I will, I will, I will,.... really.
So it looks like I won't be wearing those skinny jeans and that cool new top I got for the surprise party my husband doesn't know I know about. Now I've got to figure out what to wear instead - or when to squeeze shopping in between now and Monday.
DANG!

Hi all - I know what you mean by wicked busy, what a way to describe it.
By "food Journal" - a specific kind of record/stats keeping or more a diary? I have a Treo that I can download a record/stats kind of program, which I tried the trial run - and once I downloaded it, I forgot about it that fast. That whole wicked busy thing again.
FAST FOOD: How do we stop hitting the drive thru?
I want to start working out again! How's everyone else doing in the exercise department?

I'm working on the exercise department...but I too want to know how to get out of the way of those dang drive thrus. If anyone has an idea...I'm all ears!
So what is Treo??? Never heard of that one. I'm also one of those wicked busy people. I am a full-time student, a stay at home mom, and work a couple days a week in the family business. I'm just going nuts.

When approaching one, hold the steering wheel straight and do not let it turn.
Of course I'm teasing, but not making fun of your question. It reminded me of a favorite radio personality. When asked how to stop doing something, she often says... just don't do it again.
Her point being that sometimes we make things too complex. Analyze them too deeply.

Peter...I see your point. I guess the hardest part is that pulling into a fast food place is such a habit for most people and then even with the best intentions of ordering a salad...out pops those little words, "Give me a Big Mac Meal..supersized!" My kids love their Happy Meals but I know giving that to them isn't treating them right either. I'm just creating a catalyst that could start off a life of weight problems too.
Being overweight has been a continual thorn in my side for a long time. I wasn't overweight until after I had my first child. In fact, in high school, I was 20 or so pounds UNDERweight. I don't like the "ME" I have become. Now, I have to get out of the "comfortable" but very hated world I have put myself in and get down to a healthy weight. I have 3 girls that need a mom.

Good Morning
I know, I know! If you want something to stop - you stop doing it! We do it with food, relationships, volunteering too much. The word is NO - the hard part is learning how to say it. And mean it.
Palm Treo 700 - it's an all in one everything. Phone, computer, email, internet, camera, calendar. Takes some getting used to, but still a cool toy. I had a palm that I had a diet & exercise program on, and I liked it. Now they have the upgraded version for the new gadgets and it's just not the same. Guess I should stick with paper and pencil.
Word for the day - NO.

| I was the same way chrily,,, was 120 pounds when I got married at 20, after 2 kids and 10 years of being married I was at 163 and maybe 170 (have no idea scale was broken). Hated the way I let myself get, and am trying to teach my children healthy eating, just want to start them out right and not lead them down the path to obesity. Just takes a butt load of willpower to not go into those drive throughs. My hubby almost got me to drive through one the other day, which of course I didnt. Yay me :D

FUNNY use of words there, lady :P
It's just to easy! I've got to check out calorie counts. Write them down on index cards to remind me when I'm pulling into a drive thru.
I did get out and take care of the horses today, which I count as walking "+". And I got it all done before it started raining! I can't believe it's raining here!
Whats a GREAT SNACK? Any suggestions. And don't say celery or carrot sticks PLEASE!
Happy Friday

About the drive thru:
Another way to put it is to say that everything in life is a choice. Habits are hard to break, but when we identify something as a habit or addiction we tend to excuse it to an extent and it makes it that much easier to continue doing.
Please don't think I'm saying that changing habits is easy. I'm just saying that taking responsibility for our actions -- recognizing that we are making the choices about what we choose to do and not do -- helps us make changes faster.
Just my two cents!

Considered the grocery store? Although it's not drive thru, yes you will increase your steps on the pedometer. The "store", in our area, has ready to eat salads, fruit bowls, etc. That with a 1/4 lb of turkey breast, chicken, or even roast beef has GOT to be healthier than ready made, fat/calorie burger. Drive thru's are EEVVIILL I avoid them when ever I can. Park the car and go inside. Although I must admit it does make it better for Moms and Dads with a van full of kids.
Congratulation on the grilled chicken salad choice.

our fast food choices here, because of living in a remote area, are very limited.. basically they consist of KFC , Red Rooster, Dominos, or a chinese over priced resturant. There are also fish and chips shops but i dont even go there EVER!! We went to the closest town to us, and drove two hours to get there.. i made sure i had breakfast.. and while the rest of the family were having their half yearly fix of Maccas, I opted for my green tea instead, and waited till i found a Subway, where i ordered a roast chicken and salad six inch, on wheat bread without sauce mayo or cheese. (ish very proud of herself )
As for the Grocery store option, i do that on a daily basis pretty much. Snacks consist of a yoghurt, or a piece of fruit. Plus the Coles store here has many different kinds of salads and fresh produce ready to eat. Your body will thank you for it in the long run.. its definately worth the detour.

How was the salad at McDonalds? I like the ones at Jack in the box, and Pollo Looca has great chicken bowls. But a salad at McDonalds... haven't tried that one yet.
Yesterday was a complete yuck! I ate potatoe chips for lunch. I can't remember breakfast.. and dinner was late and large. I'm feeling it today. Can't seem to get moving. Letting the kids sleep in - it's 10am!
Got to get moving. Promised the dog we'd go for a walk. Considering walking to the liquor store to buy a lottery ticket - Mega Lottery is up in the $250 million range! Wish me luck! Wish me luck in getting out of the house at all today!
It's finally a beautiful day here. If I was SMART (hahahaha) I'd get out to the barn and ride today and walk to the store and eat something good for me today!
Strawberries are finally getting better. One of my favorites. The rain has been so bad on the fields around here this year.
Have a great day everyone

McDonald's salads are okay. The ones at Wendy's or Arby's are better. I would love to make some of my own salads at home but just don't know what to put together to make something yummy. I'm kind of cooking impaired. Not the best in a kitchen.
Anyone have any good salad ideas?????

I love making salads. Chop everything up - and I mean everything. I put just about anything it it. And sometimes it doesn't include lettuce.
And, try heating the whole mixture up. When I use red cabbage I like to heat it in olive oil a little then add it to the rest of my "stuff".
I don't know about the McD's one. I'd be too tempted to order fries with it anyways... Or a really big coke, another weakness. :D
Just keep swimming

Some salad ideas: Prepare veggies and stuff on the weekend pack in separate containers and combine when ready to eat... this keeps everything fresh. These can be done in a few minutes in the morning and can be easily portable for work. Keep dressing separate in a small container until ready to eat.
Even easier...buy pre-cut, pre-cleaned, pre-packaged veggies...a little more expensive...but how valuable is your time especially if you have kids, a spouse, etc. and need to squeeze in exercise (like me).
low fat deli meats (watch the sodium on these), cheeses, feta, olives (these contain healthy essential oils), grapes, mandarin oranges, pineapple, dried cranberries, walnuts, thinly sliced pears. I use my Foreman grill to grill chicken without skin (brush surface with a little olive oil or canola oil) or marinate and grill chicken, slice thinly over your salad. Sometimes a mix of sweet and sour can perk up an otherwise boring salad.:yumm:
I make great use of the portable disposable plastic food containers (like gladware or ziploc). I usually get a lot of mileage out of them before I discard them and I don't worry if they get lost or stained.

Thanks for the salad tips. I had a great one at Arby's the other day. A Martha's Vineyard salad....Greens, grilled chicken, apple chunks, dehydrated cranberries, a little sliced almonds, and a bit of cheese. I ate it without the dressing. It was quite good.
Tonight I had a spinach chicken salad....romaine lettuce, baby spinach, grilled chicken, 1 hard-boiled egg, and just a touch of dressing.
All this salad stuff is a big change for me. I hate vegetables, and finding interesting and tasty ways to eat them really helps.
