I find this one difficult. Sometimes I'm not terribly hungry at mealtime, but out of routine and pressure I will sit down and eat with others and end up eating too much. Sitting there not eating while everyone else does leaves you sticking out. I am getting much better at managing this situation but it is still something to be aware and careful of. Sometimes it comes about because of a late lunch due to work or I'll have eaten something an while before when I was really hungry and am still ok.
There are two things coming into conflict here as well. I find that going super hungry for a long time then sitting down for a meal ends up in eating too much, but with healthy snacking I can end not hungry at mealtime. I suspect a lot of people's appetites don't conform to the mealtime norms.

It's often difficult having other people in our lives. But of course it can be wonderful, too.
When I worked for a living, on any given day I could be asked by our sales staff to join them entertaining customers for lunch. There went my healthy brown bag lunch in the fridge... off to an expensive restaurant for drinks, appetizers, huge meals and desserts.
It wasn't easy, but I learned to put myself first and eat the best I could... not giving into the pressure to join in the gluttony.
When I would be the only one to not order dessert, one of the most overweight would inevitably say, "But you're so thin, you don't need to worry about eating dessert!"
Duh, I wonder why I was so thin?

| I fully agree with this one -- the mealtime pressure. In college, eating is a social thing -- so I would go to meals when I wasn't hungry and eat. The killer was (and may be again next year) my boyfriend -- who eats papa johns 3x a week. Taking a slice or two (usually 2) 3x a week was 1800 cals/week. That is like a pound every two weeks -- do that for a few months and you notice the oh so pleasant results :(

I'm sort of the opposite on this one, following a rigid mealtime structure really helps me because when I skip meals because I'm "not hungry" I end up eating sooooooo much more later in the day than I otherwise would have. I find it easier to eat a small meal at "mealtime" whether I'm hungry or not, and it keeps me from getting so hungry that I eat everything in sight!
If I know I'm going to a restaurant I always check out the calories in their food online if possible (this website is always helpful! :D ) and decide what I am going to order before I get there. That makes it much easier to resist the impulse to overindulge.

I've been trying the 5-6 small meals, but I get caught up in the meaning of "small". I know I need to keep it down to about 200 - 300 cals/meal/snack. I have to work hard at it. I do not keep many unhealthy foods around, except my popcorn or tortilla chips (which go with my salsa). I also love to have ice cream/frozen yogart (2-3 times a week). I have stopped buying the pint sizes and taken to buying individual bars (reduced fat/splenda sweetened). I was pleasantly suprised to find they actually tasted pretty good. Hopefully, this will help and I won't have much reason for the guilt I feel.
