First of all, let me introduce myself. I am a 16-year old male, my height is 5'8, and my weight is 134.

In the past I was a chubby kid who had to endure hurtful comments and hints for my eating habits from several people who are close to me, which scarred my approach towards food, but not my love for it. I continued eating more than I was supposed to - just slightly more - therefore I remained chubby but have not been overweight for the past 6 or so years. Everyone knew I was not a thin boy, though, myself included, and that killed me. I was always the quiet kid who sat in the corner so that people wouldn't see him, avoiding sports and even parties due to my terribly low self-esteem.

However, one particular day 2 months ago my love for food simply evaporated, and every type of food stopped tempting me. This resulted in rapid weight loss (I lost about 16 pounds in 2 months) until I dropped all the way from 150 to my current weight. I cannot deny that I am a thin person - both statistically and visually - but that's how it's seen through other people's eyes (heck, I even had people suggesting me to do modelling, although I'm not taking that seriously). However, when I look at the mirror I still see a chubby little kid, which even lessens my appetite. I usually eat no more than a single meal a day (it's usually a little bit of rice and some chicken breast), with nothing in-between. It's not that I'm starving myself - I'm simply never hungry.

Every single person I have asked, even those brutally honest ones, said without hesitating that I'm skinny, yet I don't see myself that way.

What will happen to me? I'm still far from being pleased with my body, but already I'm almost underweight, and I have become incredibly weak. On one hand, I fear that if I start eating normally again I will regain weight, but on ther other hand I fear of becoming anorexic if I keep these terrible eating habits. What should I do?

I would recommend that you make an appointment with a Doctor to make certain that your loss of appetite is not related to some underlying medical condition. The Doctor could then advise you about a diet  that would maintain your weight.  There are many other kinds of exercise other than sports..weight lifting, roller skating, and dancing that are fun and will raise your self esteem while burning calories..

Good luck and keep posting!

Deeph,

sugarNspice is right in suggesting that you see a doctor. Anorexia actually has a significant death rate so it's to be taken very serious. It's also of concern that this has happened to you so quickly.

At 5'8" 134 lb, the BMI calculator (which is very crude -- we are all so different!) places you in a normal weight for your height. But of course it's not normal for you if you've been heavier for a long time.

Your one small, unbalanced meal a day is certainly NOT healthy. You worry about putting on weight if you eat normal again. But "normal" was not likely eating well if it made you overweight. So perhaps you can solve the problem by learning to eat healthy so that you can take care of yourself without becoming overweight again.

The Tutorial on this website will be a good place to start learning about eating well, but next step.... see what the doctor says.

Deeph...If weight loss is the issue..this site provides excellent tools and tutorials to stay thin, stay in shape and eat healthy. A Doctor is still a very good idea to advise you about healthy diet and weight loss..

BUT if you lost your appetite and are losing weight..there could be some medical reason for that. A doctor is the very best place to start..because many serious medical conditions such as  cancer and tuberculosis.. have "loss of appetite" as one of the earliest signs..

About being lighter yet looking chubby in the mirror: Yes, it is quite possible that your body fat% is high! After all, you lost the weight rather rapidly and only eating Once per day so you've probably lost muscle as well as fat. You say you don't like sports - but you don't mention doing any weight training exercise either, which is what you need to tone up and build muscle, so you'll like what you see in the mirror.

Given your stats you should not be eating any less than 1612 calories a day (your unadjusted RMR) to keep losing fat or around 1934 to maintain (you should not gain). You've probably gone way under this over the last 2 months. Time to get back to normal.

Spread those calories around. Best practice is to eat little and often - 5 or 6 times a day is ideal. Once a day is a disaster. It doesn't matter whether you're hungry or not - you should eat to place yourself in a catabolic (muscle-building) state instead of anabolic (muscle-wasting) state. Getting protein from chicken breast is a start, but don't forget fruits and vegetables and other healthy eating within your calorie allowance - check out the tutorial (link at bottom of webpage).

That is probably not the case, seeing as I'm the only person who actually sees myself as not-skinny.

"ou say you don't like sports - but you don't mention doing any weight training exercise either, which is what you need to tone up and build muscle, so you'll like what you see in the mirror."

I do. I often do push-ups and sit-ups, weight lifting and treadmill running. I do have a certain amount of muscle in my body, particularly the abs and the arms. The only areas in my body which are admittedly not-skinny are my thighs and my legs.

Thank you for the replies - I will check the tutorials.

Skinny is not cool in a guy anyways (or girls really)... if you toned in you upper body and not in your lower, then maybey you need to do some exercise that focus on those muscles.... My boyfriend used to be chubby when he was between 12-15 and he had weight issues, then he went through his growth spurt and lost weight really rapidly and he got too skinny and it wasn't attractive. Now he is a healthy weight as his metabolism to starting to even out....have you gone through a rapid growth spurt??

If everyone says your thin, then you are- don't ruien it now by loosing too much weight.. you may look good now. but soon your friends that say that you look thin and could be a model will say, geez you look sick..... I think you should definately considered that you have an eating disorder... i didn't see the warning signs and i denied that i was sick, i regret it now because i have a long journey ahead to a recovery from anorexia..

good luck
