Hi. I joined this forum because I'm panicking slight;y

okay this is what's up:

so about 8 months ago I resolved once and for all to lose weight. I decided I'd do this through eating only as much as I burned off through excersise (rowing machine). I can't remember if I immedietely restricted my calorie intake to 400 a day- I think at first when I could only row 200 calories I only ate 200 calories, then I gave up on that and maybe increased to 1000 after realising that was the bmr...

whatever, the point is, somehwere along the line I began eating exactly 400 calories a day. this continued till I reached my target weight of about...10 stones? a healthy weight because i'm 5"7. anyway. this weight was reached, and I stopped excersising, though I often still walked home from college most days (almostt a two hour walk). so then even without the excersise, at 400 calories a day, I dropped more weight. 9 stones. so I was cool with this and I liked it. but one day I lost control and then followed three days of binging...then I regained control, and ever since then (it was july then, november now) I have eaten 400 calories a day, probably less, and gradually I hit sort of 8 stones, which my dr informed me was underweight. by this time I could barely walk or talk, I was always freezing, I'd alienated my friends and my family, I was...well, EVIL! All I cared about was that I was thin, that was all that mattered.

now last wednesday I decided I'd eat an extra 100 calories. I ended up eating about...2000/3000/4000 calories? the same the next day. the same the next day, and I'd gained almost a STONE. the fourth day I'd slowed down to 800 cals because my tummy felt so #%@&! uncomfortable, and the scales hadnt increased any! or if they had, only by a small amount. so since then I've been trying to eat 1200 cals a day and get excersixe in there;most days I dont acheive this and eat closer to 1500-1600 cals. and I dont gain weight, I dont think, (though perhaps the needle ont he scale HAS been going up but reaaallly slowly so I dont notice?!) but I this morning I woke up and I'd jumped a few pounds to sorta nine stones. this may be because I ate almost 2000 cals and had a lot of salt yesterday? but what if not?? and even if it is just that, and I eat 1200 a day and get moderate excersise each day, will I gain weight? because gain is gain whether gradual or not.

....please help me. I cant go back to eating 400 calories a day. towards the end I felt barely alive, and definitely not human. I fantasized about food all the time, I couldnt think and certainly couldnt study. I have made a drs appointment, and my tutor at college is a nutritionist and she wants to help me, but I wont see these people till next week, and WHAT IF I gain lots by then- I wont be able to cope. so some advice please, can I eat 1200 a day? less? more excersize?

I figured if I eat 1200, my body burns 400 by being alive. the other 800 I should burn through excersise. but really hard to excersise for so long, I only managed to run for ten minutes or so...I could walk long distance but will that burn enough calories? gah...

ok, first we'll cover normal and then we'll look at your situation.

a typical 5'7", 9 stone young female would be maintaining her weight on about 1643 calories. If she also burns 400 calories a day then on about 2000.

but forget normal, some of what you have done over the last 8 months has changed the rules of the game, at least for the next few weeks and possibly for a few months or longer.

you need some help with the ED side of things - that is best got from an ED support group, counsellor etc.

and then there is the practical help - this is simple by comparison.

After such a long stint at 400 a day, you minimise gain by going gradual. Yes, 1200 sounds like roughly the right level to start (it depends on your metabolism, if your body is badly beaten maybe 1100 or 1000 is a "more gradual" better starting point)

counter-intuitively, actually a short break of a few weeks from exercise is going to do you good. Part of this extereme deficit that you have put your body through is from not eating enough calories and part of it is from the calories you have forced your body to use up with exercise. So try to REST. 4 weeks is suggested but if you can commit to something it is better than nothing.

Try to maintain yourself at that intake level. After some success it will be time to increase intake gradually (say 100 calories extra each week or so).

Your objective is to undo the damage of getting your body used to only receiving 400 calories a day.

Hi there; thank you for the reply!

Your advice is encouraging, I was afraid I would have to put up with the gain and just deal with it- one point of query, though. I haven't excercised in quite a while, a few weeks; after reaching my target weight I basically carried on eating 400 cals but not doing any excercise (I figured that would be a "maintainance" approach.)

So should I start doing some moderate excercise or do you still recommend doing nothing?

That is good news as it may mean a little less damage to you.

I recommend focusing on a slow gradual increase in calorie intake whilst monitoring your weight (hopefully maintaining or slow gain). When your calorie intake has increased to 1350 or more then I would re-introduce exercise, not before.

(again, remembering that a person not affected by your misadventure would have easily maintained 9 stones on 1643 calories with no exercise)

As per my knowledge having good diet plan is the most essentail part to get the good health.  To lose the weight it is as much important too. Do practice daily exercise, drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and junk food and oily food.

I think your weight loss program more attractive. If weight loss is likely to be healthy, but if you exercise every day is great!
