| Does anyone else out there ever go on binges? I don't know what gets into me. It seems that whenever my diet is going fine and getting to my goal weight seems possible, i go on a binge. Weekends are usually the hardest. It happens when I eat too much at a sitting or just have to have seconds; my weight loss goals go out the window and the more I eat the less I care. Does anyone ever have the same problem, and if you have, what can I do to control my intense cravings?

Anybody? Like probably most of us have experienced it at one time or another, or for quite a bit of time.
This is a good place to start:

I overeat quite often. I wear the evidence for the world to see. There have been periods of my life when I was in control and during those times I was controlling my weight as well. I am definitely an emotional eater. I eat to celebrate and to console myself also. When I am eating healthy and exercising though I just try to make better choices and not beat myself up for a momentary lapse. If you eat 2 apples instead of 1 there isn't any harm done. If I do make a bad choice I just try to reason with myself that it isn't a sign of failure and I don't have to keep making the bad choices.
Thanks for the link, Peter. I will be reading it myself.

Written goals.
If you read them a few times a day, you convince your subconscious to stop sabotaging your efforts...

i find the worst thing i can do is be at home instead of at work.. i sit and watch a movie and constantly think of what i can put in my mouth.. it used to be stuff like potato chips and cookies etc.. now when i feel a binge coming on i go and get me some fruit, or i have a cup of green tea .. or i grab my bottle of water and suck on that..
make sure tho, that u are not simply hungry.. if u are hungry then make something substantial to eat, otherwise the feeling of the need to binge wont go away ..

| i know that if i start eating, i wont stop... lately it has been all healthy foods but calories add up!! for example.. if i have a banana when i get in from college, il have another after that, then another, then some cereal, then some more, then some grapes and finish the whole bunch!! so when im done with my snack, i chew some gum straight away so my mouth is busy and i wont think about eating anything else.

| I also binge on grapes and bananas when I have them. A month ago I even binged on oranges (31 in 3 hours, about 800 calories). I also use chewing gum to avert boredom. I try to fill up on vegetables - and then make fruit the treat when hunger is not an isssue.

yup fruit is great for the inbetween snack.. they say bananas are fattening i say too bad they are full of nutrition too .. and the fats are "good fats" just eat them in moderation..
wow.. 31 oranges in 3 hours .. thats a lot of orange!! but they are so good on hot days and jam packed full of vitamin C ..
i find the worst fruit to eat when u are hungry is apples.. they fill me up with air for some reason and then i have hiccups so i try and steer away from apple.. but each to their own :)
fruit gets a big ten out of ten from me.. and i dont think there is any better way to have something sweet for a snack .. GO FRUITY~~

When you're eating 31 oranges in 3 hours I would guess that it has nothing to do with the subject of diet or weight loss or calories. It has to do with your mental state or emotions... and that's what needs to be addressed.
When I turned from food to gum I just transferred one habit to another. I was soon rationing the gum else I'd be going through more packs than you could imagine in a day.
Food, gum, alcohol, whatever... it's all just a distraction from the problems that need to be addressed. Figure out what these problems are, resolve them, and these "symptoms" will go away.
Well, that's what it took for me. And I don't mean to make it sound easy.

| Consuming too much of anything, no matter how healthy it may be in moderation, is - well, too much. Sometimes mood is definitely part of the problem, but I also think certain foods (for me anything high in sodium or high on the glycemic index) can trigger binges. I can eat 1/4 cup of rasberries or blueberries and walk away happy. But give me a piece of watermelon and I will not be able to stop eating it until my belly actually hurts. I can eat 15 nuts and not think about wanting more, but put some salt on those babies and I will (and have:)) eat a pound in one sitting.

I'd like you to try to think of a way of abusing Celery (on its own) :)

De-string the stalks, cut into bite sized cubes, cover with water, add a little red wine vinigar, a couple of diced cloves of garlic, onion, salt and dill seasoning. Place in a sealed dish in the fridge over night. Open, drain all the liquid and you have lots of salty, spicy, crunchy, cold, tasty little bites celery just waiting to be abused.:yumm:
edited to add: well, you asked.

| I don't really binge as such.. but if I go over my calorie limit I make myself sick because I fear that I'm gonna gain weight. :( (it sounds stupid I know, but I get so paranoid)

Wow, Peter this was exactly where I am today. I finally have realized that the "void" I'm filling needs to be addressed.
And it's scary because that void (or shadow) has been keeping me company for 40 years. I've also known for a while that it's not going to go away by itself.
Wish me luck!!

Good luck!
And even though we're all at different stages, we're all dealing with food like you are. How do I know?
Well, I just assume that if we didn't all need help we'd find something more entertaining than my website!
Haha,
Peter

I have not been on this site in a couple of months but I found my way back when I got an email message that somebody posted in one of my old threads. I was eating girl scout cookies at the time I got the email. Ironically, I got to this tread about binging just as I was finishing off the box, which I only opened a 1/2 hour earlier. So obviously this thread really hit home.
Some of you may recall that I had lost 20 pounds at the end of 2005 and was within 10 pounds of my goal. Luckily, I have only gained 2 pounds back and I am still in my size 14 clothes (down from a size 18) but I really need to get my focus back before I gain back all of my weight. I can feel my clothes getting more snug. I really fear gaining the weight back, but for some reason I seem to have lost control of my eating over the last couple of months. I seem to think about food all of the time now. I am still keeping my journal and I have more good days than bad but not many. I would say that I am really good about 4 days a week and really bad the other 3.
Anyway, I am going to continue keeping my journal and I will also be checking out the information on the OA website the Peter links to. I really need to get control of this over eating problem!!

Welcome back Aryn.
This forum is a place to share with others too, but there's nothing like sitting down and sharing with and listening to others in the same place you are. That would be great if you could find a support group to visit of one type or another.

Hi there,
I know what you are saying....I am the exact same way. I diet, then cheat, and i tell myself, (just for 1 day) i will eat what i want, then continue my diet again the nexy day...Then I keep on cheating and whatever i lost comes back harder than before. I am now not giving myself anything, I eat once in the morning, I choose my breakfast, 1 boiled egg, or oatmeal, or yogurt, but i will get my glass of milk too. and i go all day with nothing but water, and will eat dinner at 6p. (2 lowfat yogurts). then no snacks or anything to eat till the next day. when I get hungry, i drink a glass of water. this plan helps me to loose 1 pound each and every day. I only hope that i cann keep it up. i am at 310 lbs, i want to be at 180.... god help me,,, i will do this, i am mad at myself for getting this big,.....no mor BS, I want to be sexy again.... my hubby will give me 10,000 to go on a shopping spree, when i am done, and have a party to burn all my plus size clothes!!! hope this helps, thanks. i eat all the time.. lol.. girls at work always pick at me cos i am always stuffin me face .. its not so much the eating .. its WHAT you eat.. if u are going to eat, eat healthy.. dont starve urself.. cos it doesnt work.. the weight will come off a bit but it wont stay off.. really u need to change ur lifestyle.. and change the way u think about food.. i have been on the merry go round and i have decided to get the flip off it!! .. its bad.. !! dont just "diet".. because u know what will happen? as soon as u stop ur "diet" the weight will creep back on.. you have to find a healthy way to eat.. and stick to it.. forever.. not just a day, a week a year.. for the rest of ur life..
trust me, you will feel better for it..
