Just trying to canvass a little opinion - some books say not to eat starchy carbs with your evening meal, or at all after 5 or 6pm, others say always include them in a balanced meal.
Any thought?
Thanks!

Carbs, and any other fish for that matter, are a great source of protein and omega3. I wouldn't suggest you eat them with every meal or you will get tired of them fast, but they are a nutritious food for when you need some protein.

Vega- what is that...a 'serious' joke?
desperategirl- I have read that carbs should make up about 40% of your meal. Protein 40%, and 'good' fats the remaining 20%. I have taken it a step further to only use what I consider to be 'good' carbs, from vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, and potatoes. I have elimated the pastas and sauces, etc. It was also recommended to me by one of the trainers at my gym that eating carbs before bed is bad. Optimumly you'd like to be able to burn off carbs by the end of the day. Evening meal should be the last carbs you get in a day.

Thanks! I have pretty much read the same thing about the ratios. I guess I will keep including carbs in the evening meal, but eat a good while before bedtime.
Thanks again.

I always make sure I have carbs in my evening meal. Of course, I also make sure I eat about three and a half to four hours before going to bed. I eat smaller portions and more often throughout the day and make sure that I have good carbs with my meal, whether it'd be complex carbs or brown rice, etc. I follow the Eat-Clean Diet (Tosca Reno) and while I don't really count calories all the time (the ECD doesn't call for it, I just kind of do sometimes as a guide) I definitely feel better, and more full when I have carbs on my plate!

carbs to me and for me are not good because I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and the sugars in processed carbs do not break down as easily and I take medication to assist in the breakdowns. For a long time I did the atkins for about 80% of the day, I eliminated the BREAD< PASTA<POTATOES<RICE<ANYTHING THAT WASNT MADE FROM SCRATCH LIKE CAKES<COOKIES ETC.....but it was REALLY! hard to do because its easy for those to be staples in our meals, its waht most of us have grown up with. I grew up on pasta and potatos and we always had bread!
I stopped doin the Atkins way two years ago when I moved in with my now hubby and had to modify my lifestyle, budget, and become the main cook per se'. I am still VERY AWARE of the carbs, and I try now to eat more fruit, complex carbs, and I try to make sure my plate is more of them, with the right amount of proteins and fats with maybe some of the "bad carbs" like a 1/2 of a red potato or a slice of toast with butter. For breakfast I allow myself to have sugar free oatmeal with cinnamon and a splash of milk, a wheat pita with homemade tuna salad for lunch and fruit etc. Of course I try to eat more carbs during the day if I have them because I am more active in the daytime, so I will at least burn them away. For dinner I do try to have more of the greens and then protein with a fruit for dinner. Once in a while we have the potato or garlic bread or pasta but the funny thing is my hubby isnt into any of those things, so by default I barely ever have them! LOL...funny how things work out.
Dont avoid the complex carbs, the fruits and veggies and even the brown whole grains etc. I dont know if there is any real rule about eating them at nite, I just know I try not to load myself up to go to bed full and uncomfortable, which is why i bulk up on veggies and fruit for dinner. I get full but its a different full not ugh full.
You will find what works for you! Good Luck!

I think it really depends on which carbs you're talking about, as there are good carbs and bad carbs. While I can't call this official advice, I operate on the rule that I limit sugar and starchy foods later in the day. This is because your body is settling down and is not as active, therefore won't be able to get a jump start on burning off that energy at night as you might normally be able to during the day. Not to mention, heavy starches can cause issues such as gas & bloating right before bed, and no one wants that! I have also heard that eating certain foods such as starches can cause issues like insomnia or nightmares. I don't know how true this is, but considering that all the extra food robs the body of oxygen it wouldn't be surprising.
Perhaps to be safe, I would suggest limiting starchy foods late at night. Stick to fruit, protein-rich foods and plenty of water to help the body flush itself out and regenerate properly during the night. If nothing else you'll get to sleep easier!
