I have heard that some fruits and veggies... and even some other foods your body uses up more calories to digest them than they have in them. If this is true do i even need to count them on my daily calorie intake.... for example, an apple!

Hi Benjee,
I don't know much about this so hopefully others with more knowledge will reply to your post. I try to eat highly nutritious, low calorie foods all the time so I never think about counting calories and I can certainly eat all the apples I'd want.
You can find a lot of "negative calories" food lists (that's what they're called) by searching Google. Certainly you always hear that celery is a food that goes on the list... IF you eat it plain.
On some of the lists I saw apples and plums; on others I didn't.
It's only anecdotal evidence as she could have also been eating more pizza. But I remember the time my sister-in-law moved into a home one spring and started eating plums from a tree thinking you couldn't get fat on fruit. She did!

yes, your body uses a number of calories everyday to breathe, pump blood, digest stuff, yada yada yada. but. negative calorie foods are #%@&!. there is a diet out there called the negative calorie diet - but honestly the only reason people lose weight on it is casue they rae eating fruits, veggies, water, and not the usual everything on it pizza and soda to drink all the time. its as simple as calorie reduction in their diets, not some crazy, "you can eat an apple and it doesnt count" slogan.
still count the cals from the apple, cause think about it - say your daily intake is 1,500. but really, its 2,000 adding in foods you dont think "count". see how that could get you into trouble?
and just to be the devils advocate - i do remember reading somewhere that (example) to digest an apple takes 100 cals. an apple is 90 cals. thats only a deficent of 10 cals. for the love of god - go out and walk for 10 min and you'll burn more than that.

I absloutely LOVE flyawayana's very last point.
If FUSSING about a few calories BURNT calories there'd be a lot more thin people!
Too much time goes into worrying about a few calories here and there. Treadmill in the morning vs. evening and so on.
Benjee, I'm not picking on you here. You had a good, interesting question.
I just see to much time being wasted on too small of details. Spend the time walking around the block... I love it!

I wasnt really thinking of eating fruits and veggies to burn calories or as a regular workout program... that seems kind of foolish.
I have to count calories because my diet has been out of control for so long. I have been doing it for a week now it it has really helped. I only cut about 500 to 600 calories from my baseline diet. It isnt hard to follow at all and I already notice that I dont feel bloated and my system is better. Im sure with time I will no longer have to count but for now I see it as kind of like keeping a budget.
I have found there are lots of very good low calorie foods out there that taste better and make you feel better rather than worse after you eat.
The worst part for me, being in college, is trying to avoid all of the beer. 100 calories per lite beer doesnt sound like a lot but when you multiply it by six beers you are talking about some poundage.
Any other really good low caloric/density snack foods that have worked for you guys?

I love to walk, rollerblade, lift weights, and right my bike. I am 6' about 205 lbs and I want to take the final step to get ripped. Is that wrong? should I just not worry about it? people tell me i dont need to lose weight because they are fat i guess.

I like low calorie foods that deliver a strong flavout hit, but that really depends on your tastebuds because these aren't sweet. My faves are the small stuffed green olives, excellent quality baby dill pickles, and rubharb from the garden. I also shop for fruits at a store with lots of variety and instead of a bag of the same kind of apples come home with 4 or 5 varieties of apples.
For your calorie counting, I wouldn't worry about veggies like celery, carrots and greens, but you definately need to count fruits. 10 fruit works out to about 700 calories, and there goes your edge for the day.

Hi allornothing,
I suggest you read the Schwarzbein Principle by Diana Schwarzbein, MD. Dr. S will explain to you why everything you eat turns to sugar.
Another excellent book is The Modern Nutritional Diseases by Alice Ottoboni, PhD and Fred Ottoboni MPH, PhD.
On the web, you can visit mercola.com or doctoryourself.com to learn how to use dietary changes to improve your condition.
