I just read an article about a new study that links too little or too much sleep with obesity. Has anyone heard about this before? I thought it was interesting because I don't usually think about sleep when I think about losing weight. According to the article people that sleep less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours each night are more likely to be obese.
Here's the link to the article if anyone wants to check it out:

I think I average about 6 hours on nights when I have class and 7 hours on other nights. How many hours do you sleep each night?

Ya, know I have thought of this in my desperate search of reasons why my body hangs on to stubborn weight.
I have heard of the body being compared to a machine and it makes sense if the machine doesn't get off time it won't run as well.
I would think sporadic sleep would be worse than lessened hours.
I dunno.
I get about 8 hours. I used to be a very light sleeper and wake up several times a night. Then we got a fish tank in the bedroom and I sleep much more sound.
I can't tell if it has had any effect on my weight though.

I understand why too little sleep would contribute to obesity, however I do not understand the logic that connects too much sleep to obesity. Logically, when you are asleep, you are not eating, so you are burning more calories than you are intaking. I find that the earlier I get up in the morning and the later I go to bed, the more calories I eat throughout the day---however I also have more opportunities and hours in the day to be active.
I disagree with linking too much sleep to obesity (unless depression and/or overeating is also a factor) because when I slept 10-12 hours a night (back in high school), I was significantly thinner (by about 20-35lbs) than I am now. I understand that the metabolism slows down as we age, but I'm not that much older now, so the change in not as significant as to affect me. Currently, I do get (on average) 2-4 hours less sleep per night than I did 8 years ago, and I also weigh more---just an observation from personal experience.

I think sleep and diet are directly related. The two days that I struggle with on my eating habits are on weds. and thurs. I think it's cause I am tired, because I don't get enough sleep.
For me, I am comforting myself with food instead of the sleep that I need. I usually get 4-6 hours during the work week and of course more on the weekends.
When I was overweight, I found I was tired more and slept more.

| I think it is different with everyone. Up until January I had worked my entire life. And never less than 60 hrs a week. My last job I managed a store and averaged about 70 to 75 hours a week. I never got enough sleep. I was lucky to get in 4 or 5 hours. But I was always MY perfect weight. I was always 135 give or take a few. Now, I'm 150 and the only difference is that I'm not constantly running around an I have less stress. I actually eat way better now because I can cook instead of sending one of my employees to fast food row. I sleep abut 7 or 8 hrs a night now. And my weight isn't budging no matter what I try. I'm fixing to turn 28 so maybe it's just that I'm getting older, but 15 pounds is a crazy amount for me to have gained in such little time.
