I have been exercising very hard for about 5 months now. I have gone from about 311 lbs down to 230. I figure I have about 40ish to go. Some quick info: I'm male, 44 years old, 6 feet all, medium-heavy build. Unfortunately I've never had my actual fat percentage checked, so can't really provide a realistic BMI.
Anyway, my question is about salt intake. I have been steadily reducing salt intake for some time (months). The only salt I take in these days is in any prepared foods I eat, such as canned tuna (one of my protein mainstays) and any canned veggies I eat. It stays at around 1200-1500 mgs per day, occasionally less when I eat all fresh foods. I exercise twice per day, doing 90 minutes of cardio first thing in the morning and 90 minutes of cardio plus weight training in the late afternoon. I sweat profusely. I guess that goes without saying.
Recently I had some issues with cramping during my afternoon workout, causing me to curtail it after just a few minutes. There is a trainer in the gym I use who helped me work out the leg cramps I was getting and who commented that I was probably not getting enough salt. This was after I explained my diet, etc to him. What I am trying to find out is just how much salt is enough? I have recently read that if you sweat profusely, you need anywhere from 300mg to 1100 mg of salt for every pound of water you sweat out. I drop up to 6 lbs during per work out. Usually I drink during the work out, but not always, as I tend to hydrate a lot throughout the day, up to 2 gallons worth.
Any information on salt intake would be appreciated. I'm not really worried about getting hyponatremia, but figure it's better to be safe than sorry, especially since I've gone from the typical salt-circles on my shirt guy to my sweat not even tasting salty guy.
Thanks for the help.
Sincerely,

I used to get leg cramps in the night when I would run and workout during the day, then go out country western dancing for five or so hours.
It's been so long I can't remember what the solution was, but I don't think it was just salt. I think salt and maybe potassium? Not sure. Someone will know.
The real reason I wanted to post was just to point out for others reading this that the average person -- and the average person does eat a lot of processed foods -- gets FAR more salt than their body needs without adding ANY from a salt shaker!

Hmm...maybe I'm not retaining water after all. I've weighed myself before and after 60-minute cardio sessions, and there were no weight differences. I sweat A LOT, too - my shirt is probably at least 80% soaked.
