Had beer type belly for 20 + years. It would pull my pelvis forward.
I am now standing taller, as result of weight loss
As a result I have lower back pain. Its centred right in the middle of left buttock. Hurts standing up and sitting turning over in the night etc
I am doing stretches, sit ups in an attempt to strenghten stomach and lower back.
Any belly shrinkers suffered the same fate?

I had a weak back (but didn't know it) and for years by the time I'd finished my commute to work I was in pain. I solved the problem by doing leg raises!
On my back with my hands under my butt, legs almost straight, raise and lower. I worked up to doing them for 10 minutes every morning with ankle weight. (I'm real compulsive.)
Anyway, no more back problems!
Actually, we can cause problems by doing the trendy sit-ups to get a good stomach, and throw things off balance as our stomach muscles become so much stronger than our back muscles.
Just something to think about.
Peter
P.S.
Leg raises mostly target your lower abdominals, not your back! I have no idea why they helped my back, or even if they strengthened it. But they solved my back problem.
What's funny is that I forgot they were for lower abs -- remembered they helped my back -- and have been suggesting them for strengthening the back for years just as I did above. Finally someone reminded me what they really do.
So maybe leg raises don't make sense, but you might consider something to strengthen your back. Sit-ups could be making things worse by throwing the balance off even more.

Thanks V much peter. I am doing one where I lie flat push belly button to floor. One leg out straight. Bend other leg and straighten 15 each side. I'll try straight leg raises as well. I've tried anti inflammatory pills and things are improving.
Thanks for setting this site up. I find it very helpful to keep a daily diary.

One posibility is a pinched sciatic nerve. I used to get that pain occasionally, from my buttock down one leg. It just came and went until it finally didn't come back. Hope it goes away for you soon.
Congratulations on losing your pot belly!

The bridge is a good one. I've been able to hold one for about 2 minutes. Matt Furey's Combat Conditioning course has that one in it. They say the best thing for your back is to strengthen the other side which is your abs. Just be careful because you can injure your back doing some ab exercises.
Peter's idea is better to start with for a beginner trying to ease into exercise.

| Sounds like sciatica....I have a slightly crooked spine and my sciatic nerve gets irritated with the same type of pain plus it shoots down my hips too. Have you seen a doctor?

After i posted I saw the picture of the reverse bridge and it was totally different than what I do. I make an arch with my back and place all the weight on my forehead and feet. It is a wrestling exercise. Pretty hardcore for beginners, but you can use a swiss ball to support your back some.
