My hobby is working on this website. It doesn't burn many calories, but it certainly keeps me occupied! In fact I'll often sip my morning OJ till into the afternoon before I'll force myself to get something solid to eat. Not very healthy, but I'm working on it.
Years ago my hobby was running marathons. No weight problem in those years, but it was trying to keep my weight down for the races that led to my eating disorder.
Do you have a hobby that helps with weight loss? Or keeping you slim? Either by burning calories, or keeping your mind off food?
Or would you like to find a hobby that would help in these areas?

| I'm not sure if exercise counts as a hobby for everyone who does it around here, but I'm pretty sure it counts for me. I was exercising at 18 when I wasn't concerned about weight, and I exercise even when I don't watch what I eat. Sometimes I do the 'wrong' exercise given what my goals/objectives might be, just because it is fun.

I'm a "gym rat" because I enjoy looking good. So I suppose that counts as a hobby, too.

I initially saw the poll but didn't feel like any of those answers really fit. My hobby (and profession too, I guess) has me running around the kitchen all day... so I burn more calories BUT it definitely doesn't take my mind off of food!!
Other than that, I agree with Nir and Peter. I consider exercising a hobby too.

I'd call riding my mountain bike a hobby I guess. today I rode for one and a half hours after work and rode some fun single track and thru the bush tracks along the Yarra River here in Melbourne. It was about 24 degrees, windy but great. It's fun, relaxing, I can let my mind wander and it burns calories. Any exercise I regard as a hobby, so road riding and going to the gym I enjoy too.
I used to knit and do cross stitch, but thankfully I got over that
(Oh look at that, I joined on October 14th and that is our daughters birthday - have just been to visit her in London)

I like to paint pictures and do scrapbooking. It help takes my mind of food. I also make it hard to get my snacks. I am too lazy to get up and get something to eat when I am involved with my painting or scrapbooking.

| I go through phases with my hobbies. I love to craft, so sometimes I quilt. I make candles, I needlepoint and knit....I have half a dozen projects half done. I read alot, too. Nora Roberts is my favorite guilty pleasure. I am an only child and I think I learned to occupy myself from way back. I always have something to do and I rarely get bored.

I have a great hobby that helps burn calories.......my horses! I was excited to be able to actually calculate how many calories I'm burining while I ride them using the Activity Calculator. I love to trail ride and right now I've got two great 4 yr. old horses. One I'm training for barrel racing and the other is a natural cow horse so we do a lot of sorting and other cattle related events. Taking care of them can be kind of demanding sometimes, especially in the winter. Riding my horses also motivates me to stay in shape, I don't want to be uncomfortable while I'm riding and I want to be able to continue riding as I get older.

Does full-contact fidgeting qualify?

I've been keeping a food journal all year (for fun and to keep me occupied!) Oh, I have a 40 hr week desk / administrative job at A&M animal sci. dept. Ah, sleep . . . . feet up just a half hour w/o someone wanting my full attention! In my next life . . . . .

I completely understand PaintMom! We live on a large farm, mostly cattle and my horses. We don't have any children.....yet, but I also work a 40hr. a week desk job and my husband is an FFA Advisor for a large school district about 45 minutes from where we live. Keeping up with the dogs (2 golden retrievers and a "mixed breed" ie mutt), about 500 head of cattle, the horses, the house work, the yard work and anything else that comes up is a real challenge. I know it will only get more hectic when we have kids, but staying active has never been a problem for me. There's always plenty to do! Right now we're trying to get all of the walnuts picked up so no one breaks their ankle while we're building a new corral for the horses! I have been managing to fit in workouts on my lunch break at work, that way it doesn't interfere with all of my other responsibilities.

Wow! Those are great hobbies/lifestyles. I have recently taken up sewing again since dd needs a dirndl (German style dress) for upcoming dance. That has really taken up some time and I've got the urge to learn how to quilt.
That keeps my mind off of food and actually helps me to about food until my stomach growls that it is time to eat! Pretty cool.

We go camping. My husband and I started our weight loss effort this August. To get us on the right foot towards developing new habits, we went on a three week camping trip. We do have an RV, but that part is hardly necessary. We went to Yellowstone national park. We walked and walked and walked. It was easy not to think about food when walking around stinking sulfer hot springs. It really got us on the right track. We had time to carefully count calories and plan our meals.

A hobby that I just started, but I love already is Isshinryu Karate. It definitely burns calories, and takes my mind off of food. Plus it helps with self defense! It's just fun and interesting to be doing something so different. I hope that I can keep getting better and eventually get to black belt. :)

| I work with horses - I class this as my hobby! Working burns more calories than the actual riding.

| I don't know if this counts as a hobby, maybe a job with really good perks? But I love playing with my son, he's just learning to walk, so we go to the park and walk all over the place, he loves to be outside and to see the other children.

| I don't really have any hobbies to speak of and my husband hates it, he has so many... He really likes to play videogames and he's recently took up trading stocks online, not only is he always making money, but he constantly has somethingelse to do besides eat, he lost 7 pounds this week due to getting more involved in these activities... I have recently taken up building a really cool workout and that seems to be going great for me, it's fun... I love making websites and checking on the celebrities... LOL!!! I also really like watching all those how to redo your house shows they are great... I also really like cleaning and have discovered that there's always cleaning to do... LOL!!! None of these hobbies burn very many calories, but they have taken up a ton of my time throughout the years !!!

Hey, house cleaning burns calories. I agree with you. I rather like house cleaning too. It feels good to look around and see the immediate results of your efforts.
Gardening is another hobby which is great for burning calories. My problem is that I tend to do too much and end up with a sore back. I need to use better back mechanics.

| I really like the cleaning idea, about to get after some dishes actually, it takes up a ton of time too... I'm hope that helped you, my husband reminded me that watching a ton of television can cause sudden binges as well, he tried not watching television while he ate for awhile, it didn't work for him, but it may work for someone out there... I am also getting into learning something new everyday... I'm want to learn about Marie Antoinette and know what Charlemagne was, my husband was a history major while in college so I want to surprise him with some new found knowledge everyday... I would also recommend snuggling with your special someone remember to wiggle closer !!! LOL!!!

"I rather like house cleaning too.!!"
Hey do you and Petesgurl wanna come over to my house and work out?
I hate housework, I seem to get annoyed doing it. Maybe after 28 years of it, I'm over it - I'd much rather go to the gym, or for a ride.

i dont have a hobby per say. but losing weight is a `close hobby, as i am very determined. what i have done is now combine my allowance of an hour of tv daily, with my exercise. i put on a taebo dvd on my laptop, and turn onto my daily tv show, and go at it. my rule is , until teh show or movie ends, i cant stop. n it really works.
for people who love hindi films, they easily run 3 hours. i used to stick one on, while i was ont he treadmill, and time owuld fly by. i know if i was stuck in a room doing only the exercise, my mind would wander.
what i love abotu teh taebo dvd is, i never get bored of it. likeits 25 mins long, so i ty to do it atleast 2 times, and sometimes i ike one of the moves so much, i try it again/... n nect thing i know im doing the thing all over again.
i heard swimming helps you lose alot of weight. maybe just doing a couple of laps around would be a good idea. when i usedt o play tennis, i played with 4 people and sharedo ne net. so when me and my partner were waiting our turn, i would run aorund the entire thing over and over agin.
i strongly recommend that if you are sitting around,, and you have an hour to kill. you first stick on your running shoes. once you have those on, ur in workk out mode. that is my biggest lazy point. im so lazy to change into my workout clothes, i sometimes miss my routine, but i make a childish game out of "how fast i can change into my workout clothes" and next thing i know. i cant sit still i have to move n work out to something or another.
i know alot of east indian people who tell me that, they lose wight by walking , not really the gym. like my parents have been going to the gym for years, bu they wont lose any weight for some odd reason. bad metabolism i guess. but oncfe they started walking daily for an hour. they started getting a little bit leaner. so mayb ewalking is meant for some more then others.
another weird quirk, im not sure if its a "hobby" is me bein so self concious....i cfant rally eat infront of others. esp guys., esp if its "fattening food". so i use this to my advantage now ; where when ever im in company.. i eat then. and of course im so shy so it will be very healthy...... and that way... by the time they leave, im full from my healthy meal and wont look at the junk .
i think this had a huge hand in my gaining weight . when me an my bf first met, i became so comfortable instantly; and all of a sudden i felt tha the was attracted tome, soi could eat if i wanted to, whatever i wanted to. at that point i was a size 3-4. i think my ease was the factor that drove me to lookking at large sizes, as a tight fit.

Swimming never made me loose weight - I found it made me hungry and I ate more! I find it's a good recovery exercise cos it's low impact so nice for the joints muscles etc. I do deep water running sometimes, especially if I've had an injury and it's meant to be a better workout than land running.
Re people going to the gym but never losing weight - a couple of factors there could be the intensity they work at - I see a lot of older people who barely get the machines moving, but at least they are there doing something! Also you can work out all you like, but if you don't balance that with what you put in your mouth, you are never going to loose weight

I made a "Things to do instead of overeating" list, which includes my hobbies & chores.
For example:
-dance, read, watch Tv, take a nap, play basketball, listen to music, draw, clean my room, wash dishes, scrub the floor, write in my journal....etc.
It helps keeps my mind off food & it reminds me that there are other fun & pleasurable things to do other than eating. And also a list of things I need to do for the day which helps me focus on other things which are important aside from eating.
Remember: Eat to live, not live to eat.
BTW, nice site!!!
