Hello, I am male, 17 years old, 127pounds, 5' 11'. I know I am underweight and my mother is very worried about me. I run 7.4 miles when I am not running for Cross Country or Track and eat very healthy.
I know I need to put on weight, but it is difficult. Even if I eat too much of fruit or whole grains I feel really bad about myself and feel I don't deserve to have fun or enjoy my life.
In a scary way it is really hard to gain weight. I don't like to go in the kitchen because I am afraid that I might start eating too much and afterwords the hatred for myself will torment me again. I feel it is easier not to face that and just eat minimally than to feel so horrible.
I don't know what to do. Has anyone experienced this?
I do eat, always breakfast, fruit for lunch, and a single helping of whatever is for dinner.Last edited on 8 June 2005 12:34 am by BeatlesFan

You could ask your mom to make an appointment with your doctor. It will ease her mind, and if you are too thin for good health or not eating well your doctor can help you or refer you to someone who can. Perhaps a nutritionist or, if appropriate, some that specializes in eating disorders.
Thanks for posting. It's a start!
Peter
P.S.
Hey, I saw the Beatles live at Dodger Stadium in the mid '60s!

| ;)Why are you not in school:D? Or are you out for the summer? I work at a high school, and we don't get out until June 17th! Please go to the doctor, and he will guide you and your parents. I am experiencing the opposite, check out the forum on diabetes. But I relate to your concerns about weight. You seem like a well-rounded high school guy, with no mental stresses, and it does not sound like any type of eating disorder. Have you discussed it with your coaches at school? Many high schools have a great support network for any concerns. Good luck!!!

BeatlesFan,
At 17 years old I'm guessing you have some misconceptions about how the real world works. Your body, for example, is unique in so many ways. Just as your external appearance is different from everyone else in the world, your innards also have their own genetically determined configuration. Your digestive system may be very inefficient at absorbing calories from your gut. Biochemist Roger Williams has written about this. He says that stomach capacity can vary by a factor of ten for individuals at the extremes. Perhaps you have a size one or two stomach. Maybe your small intestine, where most calories are absorbed into the bloodstream, is shorter than normal. Whatever the case, it's OK. It's you. Try to accept it. Don't worry about it.
Realize that your body has its own time schedule for everything. At some point you likely will fill out naturally. You may not get as bulky as you might like or you may eventually find it difficult to keep your weight from climbing too high. Most people experience the latter.
It's possible you are experiencing a psychological disorder. Are you eating a low fat diet. Are you eating vegetable oil based foods rather than wholesome animal fats. If so, you may be omega 3 deficient. Very common these days. I suggest you type "The Oiling of America" into a search engine and inform yourself about this issue. Here's what you'll see at the beginning:
SUMMARY: MARGARINE’S THE BAD GUY AND BUTTER AND EGGS ARE THE GOOD GUYS.
BIG BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND MEDICAL ORGANIZATIONS HAVE CAMPAIGNED DECEPTIVELY AGAINST CHOLESTEROL, MEAT, EGGS, BUTTER AND OTHER TRADITIONAL FOODS, LEADING TO HUGE PROFITS FROM SALES OF POTENTIALLY MORE HARMFUL MARGARINE, REFINED FOODS AND TRANS-FATTY ACID PRODUCTS. SCIENTIFIC DATA CONTRADICTING THAT PUBLIC HEALTH POLICY WAS SUPPRESSED AND CENSORED FROM PUBLICATION FOR MANY YEARS. DR. ENIG AND SALLY FALLON NOW TELL YOU THE TRUTH ABOUT HOW THAT HAPPENED.
You can also visit a few websites and inform yourself about fat metabolism. We eat plenty of animal fats in our family; bacon and eggs for breakfast, cheese, meat, or peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, and hamburger or other meat for dinner. We also eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
Here are some websites you can explore:
westonaprice.org
Barry Groves, UK
mercola.com
Using EFT for Depression
doctoryourself.com
You might also want to make sure you are not overexercising. If your muscles do not get adequate rest between workouts, you can lose muscle mass. You don't want to do that.
A final comment. You don't HAVE to exercise a lot to keep your weight under control. What you need is to consistantly eat good quality food which you seem to be trying to do. Make sure you are getting adequate fat and protein of the right sort. Unless your biochemistry happens to be genetically programmed to thrive on a vegetarian diet, your body may not be able to efficiently build muscle and brain tissue or make hormones from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Also, make sure you are getting enough regular sun exposure on your skin. Sunscreen prevents UV rays from activating vitamin D synthesis. Physicians are now recommending at least 15 minutes exposure a couple times a week; more if your skin is dark.
Hope this helps.
