My coffee has too many calories!  Any good ideas on low cal coffee, creamers and artificial sweetners, ect...  It wouldn't be a problem but I drink a lot at work because 9 times out of 10 I don't get enough sleep, and I really need to be alert to do my job.  Any help would be appreciated.

Back when I was a heavy coffee drinker I used Splenda to sweeten my coffee. I only used a packet or two, as I associated the bitter taste to the sweet sweet caffeine that I was so addicted to.

I know it's not coffee but I switched to green tea, which has caffeine and still gives me a boost but I don't have to count any calories for it.  Have you tried drinking tea instead?  There are so many different flavors out there so you don't have to drink bland tea.

A note of caution about Splenda, though.  I think it has aspartame in it (or maybe that's Equal, I'm not sure) but I had a really horrible reaction to aspartame when I started drinking Coke Zeros.  So it can affect some people and I would recommend tea instead.  Besides, you can count tea as water intake, if you keep track of that stuff.

Good luck!

Yeah, tricky stuff, those artificial sweetners. I've managed to ween myself off of them and I enjoy my tea unsweetened now. Haven't figured out the coffee hurdle, might have to try some new flavors though.

There's supposed to be some kind of natural sweetener out there called "stevia" or something like that.  I'm not sure if it's on the market yet or not.  It's a no-calorie sweetener that doesn't have all the scary chemicals like the artificial sweeteners.  I heard that Coke was trying to develop it for soft drinks.  I'm not sure if it's available as a coffee sweetener or not.

Sure enough, you're right. Stevia is actually a kind of herb that's also known as sweetleaf, and that's supposed to be 30x sweeter than sugar. Interesting if true. It's Wikipedia entry suggests that it can develop a licorice-like aftertaste, or even bitter if too much is used.

Kind of an interesting prospect. I'm sure I heard of this somewhere before..

Stevia's all right, if you don't mind the slightly bitter aftertaste. Personally I like it, but some people can't stand the stuff.

Instead of buying flavored coffee (which, to me, tastes like drinking a melted Yankee Candle) I buy a little jar of pumpkin pie spice & dump some in with the grounds before brewing. Ummm I guess I use about 1-2 teaspoons... depends on how flavorful you like your coffee. Makes a nice little treat.

I believe the name of the new type of sweetener they are promoting is Truvia.  I'm not sure if this is the name brand for stevia.  When I was on the Atkins diet nine years ago stevia is what they said to switch to instead of sugar but I never tried it.

As far as creamers go, I use the fat free Coffee-mate and fat-free International Delight - both come in flavors such as hazelnut, french vanilla etc.  These are so sweet on their own that I don't add sugar anymore to my coffee.

Lately I've been able to drink good coffee without sugar, just creamer, but the hospital coffee I've been using stevia, that coffee is terrible!!
